I was very happy with their windows and they showed me all the tricks of the windows. I was very happy and very pleased. The estimate was a little confusing because there was one estimate if I bought that night and signed the contract. There was another estimate if I bought within 30 days and another estimate that was good for a year. I didn't like that. The problem was that when I told them that I wasn't going to sign anything that night they got really, really nasty and rude. It was a very hard sale. It was like $3,000 more if I didn't sign that night and he said that I was going to get a $3,000 night sleep and had I ever had a $3,000 night sleep. He couldn’t believe that I was going to get other estimates. He said he had to call his manager and he had to use my phone to call his manager to discuss me and I was right in front of him. The more he talked the more rude and nastier it got. I was thinking that he just lost himself a deal. I probably would have gone with them but I was going to get three estimates because windows are expensive and I wouldn't do something that big without other estimates. I'll never call them again because I couldn't believe that in my own home he was talking to me like that. He kept telling me about having to pay $3,000 more. It got to be stupid. He was insulting me and was downright rude to me. It was a shame because I really liked their windows. They were very responsive. In fact they called 4 times that day to confirm that I was going to be there for the appointment. I would never use them.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Capital Remodeling for some windows.

In august2010 I set up an appointment to get an "estimate" for flooring, countertops and a new sliding door. Well, it was so high that I asked just to start with the flooring, since i hated the vinyl floor the most. The rep shows up and shows me the samples etc , measures and gives me a price. I asked him some questions, one of which was "do you use your own people or do you use subs".. he said "we have our our people" (that was not true). The materials and the installation team arrive in Oct. They are all speaking an asian languge and then one person then speaks to me. They all (maybe 5 people) leave and one stays behind to install the floor. The says "oops" at least 1 time that I heard so I go to see and he says "it's okay". He finishes the floor but doesn't have the toe kick pieces and not enough trim so Joe comes to check the job and reports the missing items and has them ordered. I wait a few weeks but then notice that the floor is buckling, i reported it, a couple of days later Joe comes to see what happened and it turns out that the fitting on the pipe behind the fridge is leaking. The icemaker has been off for over a year because I don't use it, so i did not understand why. Joe says he will see what can be done and get back to me. I waited a couple of days and then called a plumber myself to fix it. The plumber said that the way the fitting broke was not normal, he thought that the fridge may have been pushed back to far or maybe it was hit with something. Anyway, after I told them i had fixed the leak they came back to remove the damaged flooring. Joe came back with 2 subs to get it done. Joe told them to remove tiles and the foam and check for water and when they got to a point where the floor was dry they would start to replace the tiles. As they checked, it was clear that the water had moved almost all the way back to the far wall and Joe didn't have enough tile with him to replace it all, so he got on the phone and told them to continue checking the floor. They would stop shortly after he turned his back and when he would return and ask "Is the floor dry now?" They would answer yes and he would check for himself and it would be wet... this exchange went on multiple times, they (the subs) were clearly not interested in doing the job right they just wanted to be done. They were shocked that Joe did not want to re-use the tiles. Also, in the process of checking for water they had to move my stove, they nearly broke the stove door by lifting the stove by its handle. Joe stopped them before the handle broke off, but he had to fix the door back onto its hinges because it would not close properly. Anyway, when they reached dry floor there were only 21 tiles left in place and I had lost all confidence in them as a company, i tried to regain confidence, but the thought of them coming back made me ill. I did offer to pay for the materials used and they sent me a bill for the cost of the entire job. THERE IS STILL ONLY 21 TILES ON MY FLOOR!!! There is no way I will pay that!!! AND I DON"T WANT THEM BACK IN MY HOME!! NOTE: JOE deserves a better place to work.

There should be a "maybe" for the question "would you use this firm again?" as under different circumstances I might use them, e.g. if the job were cut-and-dried, say a rehab for sale.
Description of Work: Salesman came promptly, was very helpful in going through a myriad of choices, and gave reasonable estimate, but not the lowest. I did not use them not just because their bid was higher, but because they offered too much of a prepackaged solution while I had a small irregular job. [e.g., I did not want new appliances, I did not even want a new a new garbage disposal even though I wanted a new sink, but it was included]. I wanted my old Corian counter tops saved and rectangles for garden tabletops cut from them. I also wanted the sink cutout and extra footage from 12' Corian sheet returned to me since I had to pay for the full sheet -- this he had to check with his manager. I decided a smaller local firm [they are a national chain] where I worked directly with the contractor would be better for me, since I was a bit of a penny-pincher and had odd contractual requests.

In April 2010, I contacted Capital Remodeling regarding a significant upgrade to my Washington, DC home. My experience with the company has been incredibly frustrating, and we have yet to come to an agreement. During the initial visits by a company representative, I was continually pushed to try and agree to unwanted and expensive renovations. In June 2010, and after three previous visits, the technician and I were finally able to agree upon the scope and price of the job. From this agreement, the technician and I signed a contract for approximately $21,000 to remodel my kitchen and install a half bathroom. As a condition of the contract, I surrendered a deposit of 1/3 of the agreed upon price. After an additional week passed, I was visited by another representative of the company to review the contractual work order and schedule the job. About a month passed and I did not hear from Capital, so I contacted the company to find out when they would be starting the work. They kept giving me the run around and kept telling me I would be called back by the manager. This went on for a week before I finally got in contact with the manager who inform me the price indicated in our previously signed contract would need to be adjusted, and that we would need to arrange a visit. During this visit, I was informed the price for the job had almost doubled, (total sales price $39,995) though there were no revisions to the scope of the work or any identified and previously unknown structural issues. The representative from Capital Remodeling then proceeded to inform me that the company would assume liability for the majority of the price increase through discounts, and that I would only be responsible for an additional $8,000, 38 percent above of the price agreed upon and indicated in a signed contract which was signed by me and the representative at my home. I was told the representative does not have binding authority and the company never accepted the original contract. Further, if I wanted to get the work completed I would have to come up with the additional money before they were able to start the work. I was also informed by one of the phone representatives, if I wanted to get out of the contract at this point, they would have to keep my 1/3 deposit because they had already started to order the items. After numerous calls and a lot of frustration, the increase in the price then changed to $6,700 (not sure why or how). When I asked what the increase was for they told me they did not account for the new plumbing in the bathroom and that the original representative who came to my home made a mistake in his pricing. I decided, I can wait on the half bathroom but wanted to still get the kitchen. I then had them write up the numbers for the kitchen alone. Get this, and you tell me if this makes any sense to you, the price still increased $2,200 dollars over the original without the half bathroom. In addition to Capital Remodeling’s contract being seriously underestimated, the company practiced overtly deceitful tactics by continually delaying the process and using multiple representatives to communicate obvious inconsistencies. I am not even sure if the new price is consistant with the price when I had the half bathroom.

This project went extremely well and all four bathrooms look absolutely smashing and are so much easier for us to deal with: higher things and safer shower as opposed to side of tub we had to climb over. The two-man team that did all the work except the glass shower door were very capable, very tidy, very nice, and created some beautiful bathrooms. They were here most weekdays from August 2-17. The shower doors were installed Sept 1.
Description of Work: They did various things in four bathrooms. Bathroom 1: repairing some floor tiling around shower. Bathroom 2: raising existing sink/vanity six inches and replacing faucet. Bathroom 3: new floor, new taller toilet, new sink/vanity, new tile on walls. Bathroom 4: removed old tub, comode, and sink/vanity and installed floor to ceiling tiled shower with built-in seat and glass door, new tiled floor, new higher toilet and new higher sink/vanity.

After seeing four other salespeople in our home, we found the Capital Remodeling rep to be relaxed yet professional. His presentation was one of the better- right on par with Owens Corning. The man who came out to measure was on his phone quite a bit. It was slightly offputting, but he was otherwise pleasant and he did his job. The installers showed up on time, as scheduled. I was taken aback by the fact that they didn't have "Capital Remodeling" represented anywhere on their shirts, truck or products. The salesperson had told me that Capital is a completely vertical operation, so I expected to see installers who worked for them. When I called the company, they told me that essentially Capital just sells their windows (Great View). I felt a little irritated and misled by the salesperson. I was also told that the installers would check the sills and make sure they replaced any rotten wood. They didn't, wouldn't or couldn't- they just vinyled over the existing sills. Nonetheless, the installers did a good job. The windows are great and they come with an excellent warranty.

The news windows arrived and were installed (in about four hours) as scheduled. The installers also did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves. The windows look great and we're looking forward to getting the tax credit for them as well as having a lower heating bill next winter.

SELECTION: We interviewed 3 companies; we had good experiences with the other two and prices were close, but we thought this company had the best product. They said the windows would be constructed to order in their own facility in Maryland. Each sales discussion lasted longer than 2 hours; although this was tedious, we did learn a lot from each meeting. DOWN PAYMENT: When we chose this company and signed the contract, we were required to pay 1/3 down. At that time we also signed a document attesting that no young children are in our home, a government requirement related to asbestos monitoring. COMMUNICATION POOR: After signing and paying, we didn't hear anything about the next step, which was to have the windows re-measured exactly. We called and were told they didn't have the asbestos document and couldn't go forward until receiving it. We sent the document via fax twice before they acknowledged receiving it. The office communication seems to need work. TIMING: Although we understood the overall time required to be 4-6 weeks, it was 7 weeks before the windows were installed. INSTALLATION: At least 2 of the old windows were broken, and the glass was not totally cleaned up. My husband stepped on a sliver getting out of the shower and cut his foot. We found pieces as large as a square inch when we cleaned up. There was also trash left in the front yard under one window, and we expect to find broken glass among the leaves under the windows that were broken. On the good side, the window installation looks great; we think the lead installer was quite professional; both broken windows were by his assistant.

Would NOT use and would NOT recommend.
Description of Work: I received 2 reminder calls and one email about my estimate appointment. The sales rep was 1.5 hours late after all that. They quoted prices that were for the DC area NOT in line with Richmond market. All other companies walked around the outside of my home and looked and the condition of my windows, their estimater insisted on walking around inside through all my rooms and NOT once did he look at the condition of the wood or outside of my windows. Felt he was seeing what I could afford vs. the condition/work needed to complete the work on the windows from the outside. Not only that they use gimmicks like "Today Only" pricing and the dog and pony heat lamp light show.

A representative came to my door during dinner and asked to tell me about their company's services. I spent a few minutes on the front step talking about my need for an estimate. He took my information and wrote it down on a clipboard. When asked about my wife's information (as she is a co-owner) I said "you don't need it." The rep reluctantly complied. Then he had to call headquarters to let them know about the booking of our appointment. This was annoying enough becauase I just sat there and went through this whole thing with him, but now I had to listen to him repeat it all on his cell phone. When we got to the part about my wife the agent on the phone was rude and pushy about taking my wife's information. She said they needed her to be present during the appointment because she was a co-owner of the home. I tolld them I would evaluate their estimate and discuss it with her and that she would sign the contract if she agreed with my evaluation. I told them she did not need to be subjected to their sales pitch. The woman insisted it was company policy that "all home owners" be present during the estimate and appointment. I told her that I was not part of her company and I didn't care about that policy and if this was a deal breaker for them then we were done. She said it was. I hung up and went in side. This is a ridiculous sales gimmick and I found it very offensive.
