Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at smithwrighthome@gmail.com as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

Contact William, got a quote and a date. He showed up and replaced the shutters and cleaned up. Did the job in the time he predicte, no problem. Then I asked him if he had an extra couple of minutes to help me remove an old toilet that I could break free. The bolts were rusted. Some heat and muscle and that toilet is gone. I'll have him back if I need handyman services again.
Description of Work: Removed old wooden shutters from the second story and installed new vinyl shutters on a brick house. Help removed an old toilet that was causing me grief.

Sent the company an email inquiring about services. 72 hours later, still no response. As a follow-on, Bill did eventually get back to me and apologized profusely for missing my email. I've therefore amended my grade from "F" to "C" as he was professional enough to follow-up.

I am so very sorry! I remember reading your message last Tuesday when you sent it and have no idea why I didn't reply right then and there. No excuses. Guilty as charged. Would certainly welcome the opportunity to give it another go, but totally understand if it's out of the question. Again, my sincerest apologies. Bill Smith

Less than 24 hours after I first contacted Smithwright, and my problem is fixed. I emailed three handymen services from Angie's List and Bill from Smithwright was the only one to get back to me the same day (about four hours later). I needed my disposal, washer, and dryer repaired. Bill told me that his colleague Joseph would be best suited for the job and that Joseph would call me that evening. Joseph did call and we were able to set up an appointment for the next morning. He told me that he had an appointment earlier in the day and that he would try to get to me by 11 a.m. or earlier. Joseph called me the day of my appointment (today) when he was leaving his work site, and he did arrive on time. Joseph is friendly and professional. There is a three-hour minimum for services, but he finished before the three hours were up. He took it upon himself to fix a toilet that I didn't even know was broken (and showed me how to repair it should it break again), and offered to take care of anything else on my "honey do list." He even investigated some suspicious weeds in my back yard that might have been poison ivy (they weren't). He said that he really enjoys fixing things, and it showed. He took care to do a good job. I just moved into my first house a week ago, and I know next to nothing about home repair. It would have been easy to take advantage of my obvious naivete, but I felt that he really just wanted to make sure that I was happy with my home. I will definitely be using his services again.
Description of Work: Repaired disposal; disassembled, cleaned and replaced hoses/clamps on washing machine; diagnosed problem with dryer and recommended replacing dryer; repaired problem with replacement toilet part to stop it from running; removed malfunctioning hard-wired smoke detector and capped exposed wires.

Bill (the proprietor) responded promptly to my request for a quote for the work I needed done. He came out, reviewed the tasks, and provided a written quote. However, his schedule was full and he said it would be a month or so before he could start. Once he started, he and Joe (his helper) worked as quickly as possible as weather and daylight permitted, since it was winter and all the work was outside. Bill and Joe did excellent work, and they were very conscientious about doing the best job they could. I am very impressed with the quality of their work and with their determination to get it done right. Some of the tasks were very challenging, especially the repairs of rotted wood in several door and window frames, but Bill stuck to it and completed everything except one window (which was rotted so badly that it will have to be replaced). They always went out of their way to do the job well, but were very reasonable when it came to charging for their work. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up after they finished each day and of removing and disposing of trash. My only quibble is that Bill is apparently so good at what he does, and his reputation is so strong, that he books up well in advance and it is hard for him to respond promptly to short-fuse projects. Luckily my needs were not urgent and I was able to wait until he could schedule me in. Overall, an outstanding contractor, exceptionally professional, and a pleasure to deal with. I will definitely be calling on him again for future projects around the house.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced front door, lock, and weatherstripping. Painted new door. Repaired rotted wood in door frame. Caulked and painted door frame and trim. 2. Removed old window shutters from 9 windows and replaced with new shutters. 3. Pressure-washed and cleaned 9 window frames, vinyl siding on 2 sides of house, concrete sidewalks, and concrete basement stairs and foundation walls. 4. Sanded metal basement hand rails to remove rust, and painted hand rails. 5. Remove 4 exterior light fixtures and install new fixtures. 6. Repair 2 rotted wood window frames.

Overall a very positive experience. The paint in the master bath had been peeling off the ceiling and walls, especially over the shower. I tried prepping and painting myself, and the new paint lasted through about 1 month before it started cracking and peeling again. Asked for several opinions, and everyone said that we needed to install an exhaust fan first, and then fix the paint. Our first challenge was figuring out how to install and properly vent the fan, in an older house that was built without bathroom fans. The other upstairs bath was remodeled previously, so we checked out how it was done. To our surprise, the exhaust fan was not vented at all, but just buried in a corner of the attic under insulation! The next challenge was finding someone who could handle all of the aspects of the job, and who was willing to do a small job rather than totally remodeling the whole bathroom. After several false starts, I found Smithwright Home Improvement on Angie's List. The first thing that impressed me about Bill Smith is that he responds to emails very promptly- usually the same day. He came out a few days later to do an estimate. After that it took several weeks to actually schedule the job. But, since he does basically all the work himself, and nothing was time-critical about our job, it was reasonable to wait. Bill came up with a creative solution to vent both bathrooms, without putting new holes into the house. For the first couple of days we were concerned that the work was going slowly. But over time we really grew to appreciate his slow, careful, and thorough work style. Also the final bill was identical to the quote, even though the job took a little longer than we were expecting. A few months later, everything is looking great and performing well. We absolutely plan to work with Smithwright Home Improvement again in the future.
Description of Work: Fixed many ventilation issues in an older house. Installed an exhaust fan in the master bath, which previously had no ventilation. This required electrical work and ducting. Also fixed ducting for the other upstairs bathroom, so that it vents outside rather than into the attic insulation where we found it. Replaced broken attic fan, including building a frame for the fan next to the gable window vent and wiring it up. Scraped down all of the peeling paint in the master bath, patched up the walls and ceiling, primed, and re-painted.

He and his employee Joe were very nice men and professional in their work, true craftsmen. And I felt at ease with them in my home. They went the extra mile to protect the property around the work area and completely cleaned the work area when they were done. I really enjoyed my experience with this company, and hope that when I have to finish my basement in Utah I can find the quality of workmanship here that Bill's company exhibited.
Description of Work: I needed the ceiling in my dining room replaced. I had the demo and cleanup done but the task ahead was too overwelming for me to complete Putting the drywall up and doing the seaming and finishing would have taken me months to complete. So I called SmithWright Home Improvement Services LLC. Bill came and gave me an estimate that included the materials and time it would take to finish the job. He said Four Days and he was spot on.

Smithwright was there when scheduled and identified the problem to be the old spikes. He had determine what parts he needed and went to obtain them from the local home improvement center nearby. He replaced all of the spikes with gutter screws. In this process he put the gutters back at the proper angle to properly drain water through the downspouts. This took him the whole day. When he was done he cleaned up the entire work area properly so none of the old spikes or debris were left. There was an all day rain the next day. All the gutters functioned and drained properly. I am now in the process of contracting him for additional work to repair problems with my roof. I highly recommend Smithwright Home Improvement Services, LLC to our fellow members.
Description of Work: I had Smithwright repair the and clean all the gutters to my house. They were falling down and the sagging wasn't allowing the water to drain. Some of the gutter had pulled away from the roof. Around 40% of all the gutter spikes had worked loose or fallen out entirely.

It went very well. I was particularly grateful that he came out the same day I called because there was more rain in the forecast and therefore, a good chance that we would have a reoccurrence of the problem.
Description of Work: He helped to diagnose the problem related to water that was backing up into our basement and thoroughly cleaned out clogged gutters that were causing the problem. He also pulled up some damp carpeting.
I spoke with Bill from SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC and we set an appointment to meet on March 4, 2011 to go over the work I would like to have done. Bill came on time and we went over all the things I need done to my house, plus he was honest in informing me him does not have experience in putting down hardwood floors, which I appreciate his honesty, so that part would be contracted out to another company. Bill took pictures of what I needed done, so he can remember when writing up an estimate. I have yet to receive an estimate from Bill, even though he did state he would need some time to get an estimate together to send to me because he is working on another project. I still have not received any follow-up call or email.

Actually, I feel the customer is being gracious with her grading. I am not living up to the professional standard I like to think I am, at least not in this case, and probably deserve lower marks in some areas. I truly regret leaving her in this situation and will try to rectify this issue as quickly as possible.

Very well! Mr. Smith was professional, personable and reasonable. I will be calling him again for other handyman and carpentry work when it is needed.
Description of Work: Replacement of rotted support beam under sliding glass door. I needed a repair/replacement of an outside support beam in a hurry so that the landscaping company that was building a deck could start work in a few days time. I called Smithwright from Angies List because he was the closest -- less than a mile away. William Smith came out a few hours later, did the measurements (in the dark) and replaced the rotted wood two days later (after he had finished another contracted job). He worked all day into the night, did a great job, and I think was very reasonable pricewise.

Estimated two days to complete the job however he got the job done in one day. Since he is a one man shop I had to wait two weeks but it was a job that had to be done but no real rush. He did a good job.
Description of Work: Fix roof gutter because it was leaking at a joint. Install new downspout.
We suffered some ice damming in the Feb '10 blizzard. This was the first major "incident" since we bought our house and Bill was a great person to work with in resolving it. I first contacted him when we needed to clear the roof, but he was booked solid. However, he was so helpful on the phone and I was so impressed with the reviews on his site that I kept him in mind when it came to the interior repair work. He was very patient with us in scoping out the project (we kept adding things to it) and was extremely flexible in working within our budget. His workmanship was excellent, especially the trim around the bay window. We left it up to him to find something that matched our existing trims and he customized a few pieces to make it very nice. Overall it took longer than we'd anticipated to get it all completed, but part of that has to do with our wait on the insurance estimate. Definitely give him a call.
Description of Work: Ice dam damage: - Repair water-damaged ceiling at entrance (4ft x 4ft area), including: removed/reinstall light fixture; tear out/install new drywall piece; replace damaged insulation. - Repair and reattached gutter on side of house - New casing (trim) around bay window (where water leaked) - Paint living room walls & ceiling - Caulk base of skylight on roof (where water leaked) Other general home repair: - Install new ceiling fan - Repair damaged drywall at corner of the stairs
