Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at smithwrighthome@gmail.com as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

Bill is a very personable man. He is very professional and punctual. He is also reliable and very reasonable. He came to my house a few days after I made the appointment. He is quite the worker. His ethics are impeccable. I was completely satisfied with the job he did and would certainly call him again as well as recommend him to my friends and family.

As the grades show overall Bill is excellent at his trade. He meticulously reviewed our scenario and helped us understand what needed to be done. The only points we dock for Bill is that pricing was not fully discussed up front and the end price entailed a balloon cost due to the difficulty. Also, I'm a new homeowner so I was expecting that Bill would work directly with the door supplier (Lowe's) after we picked our door style. Instead he asked that I place the order with Lowe's, which was a good learning experience but difficult b/c they asked many questions that I didn't have the answers to. Bottom Line: Bill is a great handyman that I would gladly hire again!

Bill and his helper, Joe, tore out my old rotted flower beds and constructed new flower beds around my front porch. It took them 2 and a half days to complete. The worked long hard days and were very professional. I had some specific requests and they built everything EXACTLY as I wanted. I couldn't ask for anything more. I hope Bill is around for a long long time because it feels good to have found a professional handyman that I can trust and count on and who can do just about anything! BTW, I got multiple estimates for this job and Bill's price beat out all of the other estimates. Bill is honest and good to his word. You won't find a more professional man to work in your home! I recommend Bill Smith very highly!

Bill took the time to come look at the problem twice before starting work (the first time the drywall was still on the wall, the second time we had taken down some of the drywall so he could better evaluate the problem). Bill was timely and professional. When the project was completed, he did a great job of cleaning up before he left.
Description of Work: I had a wall that was bowing in the corner for unkown reasons. After the drywall was removed, it was discovered that the drywall was bowing because of the steel studs behind it were not secured. Bill added in additional support to the steel studs to secure it and then replaced the drywall.

Mr. Smith came out and did some work for me in January. He repair a door that had shifted and was unable to lock. he also did caulking around a new bathtub and in my kitchen. He was professional and pleasant. He was prompt in returning my call. When he came out, he gave me an estimate and did the job in a timely manner. His work was really neat and well done, much neater and better than the home improvement person who did the initial work. I would hire him again in a heartbeat!
Both jobs went great! We had to learn a bit about how to install the automatic door sweeps as there are an insane number of options but he very patiently helped me navigate through it all and then installed them. The doors look great and the sound insulation is definitely helping.
Description of Work: When I asked him if he could install some recessed lights, he said electrical work isn't his forte so he recommended a great electrician (Able Electricians) and then did a great job with the drywall patching. He also did a big job for me upgrading my interior doors to better solid ones and adding soundproofing (that was earlier and for more money of course). He's always very friendly and very concerned about doing a good job and very professional. His rates are quite reasonable. The only minor ding is that he usually shows up about 30-60 minutes later than he planned but not a big deal. Bill is totally my go-to handyman!

Mr. Smith returned my inquiry as I made a few but he was the only one that came through on my terms. Bill has been very down to earth and respectful to my needs and requests. He writes a good contract with no underlying issues to worry about. I had several settlement problems with the drywall in my three story townhouse and wanted one room repainted. The drywall separation could have been a result of the earthquake in the DC area last August 2010. If I wanted to put my house on the real estate market, these things would definitely need to be repaired. Also, I was sick of noticing them and prefer the house in tip-top shape. My master bedroom has cathedral ceiling and I wanted this huge room and skylight vanity area repainted. I am pleased with his helpfulness and the quality of work. He's still working but it should be completed in a day. It's been a seven-day project.
Description of Work: He helped with color selection and type of paint (satin) and has done a wonderful job with the painting.

Bill is extremely friendly and accommodating. He did the work for the original price he estimated based on sending photos, even though it took him longer to complete than he estimated. We liked him so much that we decided that when he was coming back to caulk around the original re-grouting, we would have him do the other bathroom too. And when the caulk in the other bathroom shrank a bit too much, he came back quickly and went over it again to make it thicker. We're quite pleased with his service and will be using him as our go-to handyman for future projects.
Description of Work: Removed shower tiles where the grout had cracked and water had seeped behind. Replaced with new tiles, re-grouted, and re-caulked the surrounding area. We then also had him re-caulk the entire shower/tub in another bathroom.
It went very, very well. He was very flexible with respect to the date and time for the estimate and the date and time for the repairs. He arrived on time for the estimate, identified exactly what repairs were needed, and provided me an estimate in a very timely manner. He performed the work for the amount reflected in the estimate. Mr. Smith showed a willingness to work around my schedule. Once we agreed on the date and time, he was, again, on time and completed the work according to the agreed upon schedule. All work was done to my satisfaction. There were no surprises, additional costs, or a requirement to extend the time for the repairs. Working with Mr. Smith has been a pleasure and I will likely bring him back in for additional work. Melvin Jones

They responded quickly and were very nice but they never came out like they were supposed to.
Description of Work: I called them to set up an estimate.
I would like to enthusiastically recommend that Bill Smith (no relation to me) receive a Page of Happiness Award! I got several estimates from top-rated Angie?s List handymen. When Bill came to provide an estimate, it was immediately obvious that he was a pleasant, casual, highly competent professional. He discussed each my several projects with me to be certain that he knew what I needed done, then provided an estimate a few days later. Bill?s was the lowest estimate, which, combined with his professionalism and personality, led me to choose him for the job. Hiring Bill was the best decision I?ve ever made regarding people to do work in my house. Over the years, I?ve had many contractors, handymen, plumbers, electricians, etc., and, overall he was the best individual I?ve worked with. One repair was of a Murphy bed. It turned out to be a very difficult, complex repair, and I?m not at all sure another handyman could have handled it. It appeared that a board at the top had simply come off. However, it turned out that there were multiple problems. If Bill had not repaired it fully, it would have almost certainly come down on someone?s head. The bed is locked to the wall in its upright position by two catches. It turned out that only one catch was actually holding the bed. In addition, the original builder has held everything together with small brads, which Bill replaced with screws. Bill also installed a clothing rack, a towel dispenser, and other things, repaired soffits, and did some painting. His price was reasonable, he did an absolutely outstanding job, and I would hire him again in a minute. I can give Bill Smith my highest recommendation, without hesitation. I hope he will be chosen for the Page of Happiness and given the smile. In addition, I hope he soon qualifies for the Super Service Award.
Description of Work: I recommend him for the Page of Happiness. He did an outstanding job in every way. (See below for details).

I am so sorry this occured and take full responsibility. Please know, and I should probably add this note in my Angie's List profile, for the past few months I have been having difficulty receiving some but not all email through my primary email service provider with who/whom I have a 5yr contract. I've tried resolving this with the provider to no avail and have been redirecting folks to my gmail acct at smithwrighthome@gmail.com. I was also out of the country for most of August and erroneously failed to leave a vacation message on my voice mail greeting even though I did with my email. At any rate I do apologize for the inconvenience and frustration and know the ultimate responsibility rests on my shouders. As Harry Truman acknowledged "the buck stops here!".

Mr. Smithwright did an excellent job on all the various projects that needed repair. For materials that needed to match existing parts of the house, he researched various projects and discussed all issues that needed to be considered Each day as he finished his work, he cleaned the area and removed all sawdust, etc. We were so satisfied with his work that we are preparing to have him convert a darkroom in our house to a den. We highly recommend him.

He tackled everything with gusto and moved from one task to another in a focused and professional manner until everything on my list was complete. There were some minor glitches with a couple of the tasks which ended up taking longer than he expected, so he agreed to stay a while longer to finish my entire list and did not charge me extra. It's nice to know that I've finally found someone who seems to be able to just about everything, is honest and reliable, and charges a fair and reasonable price. There is no doubt that I will hire Bill Smith again in the future and will recommend him to my friends and neighbors. P.S. I have updated my initial bad report on Bill because he did not return my calls or email after 3 weeks. It turned out there was a glitch with his email and he did not get the email I sent. He was also out of town for 3 weeks and did not get my voice mail message until he returned. He did call me as soon as he returned and got my voice mail message; he apologized and we worked through my misunderstanding and we scheduled a day for my work to be done. And I'm so glad we did!
Description of Work: I gave Bill a whole punch list of items around my house, including replacing an outdoor motion light, reattaching an existing dusk to dawn HPS light to the siding on my house, removing existing curtain rods and replacing them with new rods, painting trim around my patio door, and a whole slew of other smaller items.

Bill is cheerful and extremely pleasant to work with. He communicates clearly and is easy to get in touch with between visits. He takes great care to create as little disruption as possible while he works on projects, and he cleans up after himself completely. In our case, he also hung a heavy canvass drop cloth across the doorway to keep bugs out and air-conditioning in while he worked on our front door. My wife and I thought that was a nice touch. We?ll definitely be hiring him again.
Description of Work: Because Bill Smith did such a marvelous job refurbishing our screened-in back porch last month, my wife and I hired him again to paint our front door and trim (inside and out) after scrapping, sanding, and prepping it. He also redid the caulk around the door’s window.
Bill is a cheerful, good-natured, easy-going gentleman who really seems to enjoy his work. When giving estimates he offers excellent advice without pushing products or services his clients don?t need. He communicates clearly so that all expectations are understood by all parties. When he wasn?t communicating with me in person, he was in touch with me via phone and email, so even though our project required many visits over a long period of time, my wife and I never had any doubts that Bill knew exactly what he was doing and that he was proceeding on schedule. My wife and I are delighted with Bill?s performance on this task. In fact, we?d not only hire him again, we?ve already done so. He?s going to paint our front door and trim next week.
Description of Work: My wife and I hired Bill Smith to re-screen our entire back porch, replace all the trim pieces holding down the screens, replace the screen door, re-build a set of rotting porch stairs, and then power-wash and stain the porch. He also replaced a couple of bad flooring planks, a couple dozen balusters, and a set of handrail caps. In short, Bill completely refurbished our aging screened-in porch, thus saving us from having to scrap it and build a new one. He did this for a very reasonable $4,500.

Bill was responsive in the beginning - scheduled an appointment time to do a review of the work I wanted done so we could review costs. I was extremely excited because I had seen such great reviews on this site. He wasn't very punctual, but upon arrival mentioned that he left a voicemail at the wrong number - no biggie...so, I wanted my house painted. He was honest and told me that it would be better for me to hire a "professional company" to do the job because he would not have the time or manpower to do it. I can appreciate honesty, so I asked him, how much would it cost to paint one room - mind you small room and he quoted a price of $1500. Hmmm...I could see if it was an extremely large room but we are talking a room approximately 10X10 in size. In any case, we went through my house to look at all of the work I wanted done - screwing caulking, nails popping out of drywall. He said he would go back and email me a price quote....to date, never received a quote.
Description of Work: No services were performed - Bill did a walk-through and never followed up with a price estimate.
