SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC

Handyman Services, Drywall, Finished Carpentry and Woodworking,

About us

Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at smithwrighthome@gmail.com as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

To start, this was the third handyman I tried to get. The first two basically did not respond after multiple attempts. Reviewing Bill's website, he stated that email would be the best method to contact him. I appreciated that. He responded the evening I sent the first email. He asked for additional information to help determine the extent. This save both him and me from having to waste time meeting at my house. I provided pictures of the situation as well as pictures of other houses in the neighborhood with similar situations. He kept me informed of his schedule during the next couple of days. The only difficulty was when he informed me the day before that he would be coming the next morning. It caused me to have to ask for time off from work on short notice and I didn't have time to square it with my next door neighbor as I live in a townhouse and the problem demanded placing the ladder on their driveway.. He arrived at the time specified, reviewed the actual situation, made a plan after a discussion, and bought the necessary materials. Other than volunteering to help with hold the ladder, Bill knew what he was doing and patched the gap to my satisfaction. The entire process took about two hours, which was less than his estimated time.
Description of Work: A gap in the wall of my house, just below the roof eave, need to be covered or patched.

I found this company on Angie's List and since the owner was close by, I thought I'd give him a shot. It turns out it was a great choice The owner, Bill Smith, came over to go over the things me and my wife needed doen. It was a long list of "deferred maintenance" items. Some more involved than others. He provided us with a detailed estimate and the approximate time it would take to complete. He started when he said he would and stayed on the job until everything was completed. He took a deposit up front and than the balance at the end of the job. It was great. I would definitely hire him, again.

Great. I'll call Bill in the future.
Description of Work: Bill came out to take a look at my gutter which was overflowing during heavy rain. It was supposed to just be an estimate but once he got on the roof he did a quick cleaning and then recommended a couple small things he could do in the future if there were still issues. Thanks Bill!

First item on my list, he was real responsive and came by, and he put up a ceiling fan and a back porch motion detector light. EXCELLENT JOB! I recommend him for those. Both were installed VERY well. Really, he did great, and was professional, and helped me out a lot. But since that first visit, he has not been responsive to my emails (one response a couple days later, and then nothing since, I even sent out another email just in case he missed it in his inbox, and now my wife is getting impatient for the items to be done). My jobs I needed might have been more small potatoes than his expertise was for. So, I'm trying someone else instead. Like I said, I should probably be able to do all of these things on my list myself. But if you need a ceiling fan or motion detector installed, I totally recommend him, good price for the excellent work. I guess it didn't work out for me for the other stuff.
Description of Work: I needed several small items done in my house, that I probably should know how to do, but I don't: Installing ceiling fan, installing back porch motion detector light, sink faucet is loose, small leak around toilet, sump pump needs a battery back-up installed, basement has some minor water leaking, need to find out where it is coming from, fence gates need adjusting, and some pressure washing.

I contacted them in the morning and they came out in the afternoon and completed the job on the same day! The work was done excellently and with care and consideration for my needs and the best way to solve the problem. I highly recommend them and will use them again. They are also very friendly and easy to talk to and explained their fees up front so there were no surprises.

It was just the finishing of it really, there was just some more stuff that needed to be done, part of the job was already done. They did not end up being able to work for us. Our project was not in line with what they do. It just wasn't a project in their scope of service. They were nice enough, they just weren't able to do our stuff. It wasn't their fault. They were very nice, they were proficient.

Everything went great. Bill called me back promptly (a week after I messaged- which is reasonable for a handyman solo operation, especially since I expect that people DO take vacations in August!). He was friendly, professional, showed up on time, and I was very comfortable with him. I really liked that his repair of my door was thorough because I know it will last. He was knowledgeable and skilled. I also appreciated that he suggested he NOT do some of the work I had on my list because he was honest about the fact that it would not be cost effective given that he charges an hourly rate. I will most definitely be compiling a list for handyman tasks I need him to do in the near future.

Smithwright was excellent. I found Smithwright on Angie's List. I own a rental property in College Park and wanted to prepare it for sale. Over a six month period, I engaged Smithwright to fix many cosmetic and minor structural items. Bill Smith was perfect for the job; he worked independently, helped me identify things that needed to be done; communicated what the expected expenses would be, and when things went over provided detailed explanations. Best of all, he worked great with the tenants and got all the work done on the schedule I wanted to put the house on the market. I was able to put my complete trust in him, and he delivered. Thanks Bill!!!

I called twice in July and again a month later. He did not return any of my calls. He is not the only one to do this. The winning business strategy for the 21st century seems to be: 1) get a slew of good consumer ratings published online, 2) attract more business than you can possibly handle, and 3) when you're backed up with work, stop responding to requests, since Angie's List may publish a review like this, but if work was not done, they won't count it in the averages. This may be a winning strategy for the handyman, but not for Angie. If this happens much more, I will drop my membership.

SmithWright was very professional. Quick and responsive to the initial inquiry and prompt with scheduling. Mr. Smith called to communicated his estimated time of arrival and was on time. Before he began any work he assessed the the request by identifying what was most important to me at the time and the budget I had allocated for the service. I found this to be very helpful and professional and eliminated any risk of misunderstanding once the job had been completed. Not only did he come prepared with his own tools and was able to adjust and accommodate the needs at any given time. He was very friendly, professional, outstanding communications skills and was very aware of time/budget we had discussed earlier. I have other request and will definitely utlitize Mr. Smith again for my upcoming service needs. Outstanding service!

Everything went very well! Bill fixed the shower door by raising it up and screwing it in more securely because it had dropped down. He replaced the old weatherstripping on the mudroom door with new and better weatherstripping. He also noticed that the door latch was not working correctly, so he fixed that. The door works so much better now than it has for a very long time. We added on to his work, since he was doing such a great job, the replacement of the exterior spot lights with the security motion detector lights. Bill brought out his tall ladder and did a great job with the replacement. He asked us about the settings we wanted and made sure that it was working the way we wanted it to. We will certainly hire Bill again!

Bill was very easy to work with. He came out to do the estimate and was on time (more about that visit later). He did not ask for any deposits, even though he had to purchase materials. He also does not mark up on materials. We did have to reschedule the actual work due to last-minute schedule conflicts but he was very accommodating on the rescheduling. He was here for two solid days for this work. Part of this time did entail purchasing what he needed. We were happy with the work that was done. I do want to say that Bill gets MAJOR PROPS for agreeing to be a participant during his estimate visit for a training session with our new dog. She is a rescue, and has significant issues with protection of the house. She has bitten a few people and we are working now with a behaviorist. So it turns out that the behaviorist's first visit coincided with Bill's estimate visit. He agreed to help out. Our dog has made good progress, but on that first session she was pretty intimidating. I know he was unnerved, but he was a real trooper. We did board the dog for the two days Bill was working here. There were two items we wanted Bill to do, but he was unable to complete: new light covers for the suspended ceiling in the basement, and a new range vent cover for the exterior of the house. Apparently standard sizes have changed :-( so he is off researching where he can find the right parts. Since we had the same issues when we tried to do these tasks ourselves, I would certainly not ding Bill for not completing these tasks. As for price, I think he was competitive. We actually had called someone else from Angie's List first. They did not come out to give us an estimate but gave us a quote based on what I told them in a message. My husband thought that was too much, so I called Bill. His price was pretty much the same, but at least he came out to see the actual work needed.
Description of Work: 1. rebuilt two gates 2. re-planed a door in the basement that was catching on the rug 3. reseated two screen doors so that they would close properly 4. secured a pillar under our deck that had come loose These are all small jobs, and have been on our to-do list for some time but we never seemed to get to them. So we bit the bullet and decided to hire someone.

Mr. Smith was an observant, honest, communicative hard-working man. Demolition had to be delayed a day d/t weather, which he explained. About an hour ahead of arrival time the next day he phoned to say he would be delayed about 30 minutes. He arrived on time and explained he was going to use a Bagster ("Dumpster in a Bag") for the debris. However, he noticed that the part of the lawn which would have been a convenient location for it had new grass growing, so requested input for an alternate location (the Bagster is about 8 ft long). He set it up, gathered his tools and set to work. At about the halfway point he had to leave so he could purchase another Bagster. Again, together we figured out the best spot for it. Towards the end of the long project he noticed he had now a flat tire from the trip to the DIY store. He had to pull out his compressor to air up the tire then had to purchase tire sealant. It couldn't have been fun after a long day in the heat and humidity. He finished the deck and mailbox installation, checked everything, packed up his tools and left everything tidy.

Bill is a very friendly and professional person to work with. We have had work performed at three homes in our family. Each time the job was completed properly and within the estimate. When we were selling my mother?s home, and he and Joe came up with several additional ideas that made the house more presentable. Their work is meticulous and we will continue working with them whenever we need their services.

Only positive comments! Bill installed a sump pump we purchased for installation in an out-of-state rental home we own. In addition to this job, we asked if he could add a second hole in our sump pump well cover to accommodate a discharge pipe for a back up sump pump we previously installed. Following completion of these jobs, he took the time to strap our main discharge pipe between studs in the basement to reduce movement when in operation and sent us photos of his work. He was easy to contact and communicate with on this project. He was friendly, professional and accommodating. His rates were fair and honest. We will definitely call Smithwright Home Improvement Services for future projects. Thanks Bill!

The contractor responded promptly to email request, and we set up an appt. within a couple weeks. Though he did call to let us know, he was 30 minutes late arriving that day. He was very pleasant and courteous upon entering our home. The first task was to hang a pre-purchased curtain rod/holder in an upstairs bedroom. While we do have plaster walls, the task took over 75 minutes. The second curtain rod downstairs involved removing existing metal rod/holder and installing new wooden rod/holders. The new rod holders are up, but the open "wounds" where the previous hardware had been removed are still gaping on my freshly painted wall. We feel that a contractor should have been prepared to slap some compound on those two spots and ask if we wanted to sand and paint it ourselves, or would we like him to do so. That would have been a nice professional touch. Next, of two matching paintings on either side of the couch, one needed to be adjusted to match the wall height of the other. A difference of 4 or 5 inches or so. The contractor made the adjustment and just looking we could see that it was not quite correct. Almost, but not quite. He was happy to make the correction. Hanging the oak mirror in the dining room went very well. It is rather heavy and needed a secure hanger. He was a very pleasant individual, and went above and beyond to make any adjustments to make us happy.

Response from SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC
First of all I just want to say that this is one of the most painful reviews I have ever received, especially for work I actually performed. I had no idea you were this dissatisfied with my work and professionalism upon leaving and would not have left without trying to make it right. Yes, it did take me longer even by my standard to hang the first curtain rod. I don't work with lathe and plaster walls very often and I couldn't find a stud to screw into so I had to use toggle bolts that required much larger holes to be drilled into the wall. I worked at a safe pace in order to get it straight and hopefully right the first time. Also, too much time spent going back and forth to the truck for the right parts didn't help The patch work on the wall downstairs was a total oversight on my part. I should not have left it that way and had drywall compound in my truck I could have used to do so. I will be more than happy to come back and do this for you if you wish. With regard to my comment about women having a better eye for hanging straight pictures on walls, that was intended as more a self effacing comment, not a sarcastic sexist dig. I am so sorry I offended you and should have clarified the intent of my comment. I should know better than to make comments that can be so easily misunderstood and will certainly be mindful of that from now on. Lastly, I erroneously overcharged you by $60. Your bill should have only been $180 for three hours not $240. I will send you a refund for this plus another $30 to hopefully offset some of your frustration with me. In closing I would just like to add that I work really hard to please my customers. Reports matter a lot to me and I didn't earn the number of "A" reports by leaving folks this disenchanted with my performance and professionalism. Please, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to earn your satisfaction and respect with regard to this matter. I really want to make this right. Thank you! Bill Smith
