SMITHWRIGHT HOME IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, LLC

Handyman Services, Drywall, Finished Carpentry and Woodworking,

About us

Smithwright Home Improvement is a general contracting company providing a broad range of home improvement and home repair services in the Suburban Maryland area. I am a company of one and use subcontractors only when absolutely necessary. 99% of the work I take on is performed by me. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. My business, up to now, has grown strictly through referrals from satisfied customers. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at smithwrighthome@gmail.com as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).

Description of Work: Because of the good reviews, called and left a message. The only bad reviews were not being responsive. I confirm that there is a problem with response. I called on a Monday, left a message with four phone numbers to call back. I waited a week with no response. I called again the following Monday with the same information. That was three weeks ago and still have not had a call back.

Description of Work: I called twice in July and again a month later. He did not return any of my calls. He is not the only one to do this. The winning business strategy for the 21st century seems to be: 1) get a slew of good consumer ratings published online, 2) attract more business than you can possibly handle, and 3) when you're backed up with work, stop responding to requests, since Angie's List may publish a review like this, but if work was not done, they won't count it in the averages. This may be a winning strategy for the handyman, but not for Angie. If this happens much more, I will drop my membership.

I called on Sunday Feb 14 because the ice dams on my roof was causing water to leak into the house. Bill Smith called me back that afternoon, and the work was done the very next day. Excellent service!

Bill Smith returned my call in good time, and indicated he'd be able to have someone come out later that day, or the next morning. Turned out to be the next morning, and the worker was prompt and efficient at completing the work. Approx 10 days later, I noticed that I'd been charged $450 rather than the quoted $400. As it was late/after business hours, I texted Bill to alert him & request response. I received a response from him before 7am the next morning, apologizing for the inadvertent overcharge, with assurance that $50 would be credited to my account. The credit was received swiftly as well. Based on the overall experience, I would certainly use Smithwright again. I appreciated the responsiveness to initial call, and to concern w/overcharge.

Roof cleared without damage to shingles. I elected to have entire roof cleared rather than just clearing about 4 feet from gutters (for $350.00) because of pitch and severity of ice dams. Without any melting snow to run down roof and add to mess in the gutters, it still took 7 days for all ice to melt. It was worth the extra dollars for the peace of mind. End result --- no interior damage.
Description of Work: Cleared steep pitch roof of snow as step to reduce risk of damage from severe ice dams on front and rear of house.

We called on Thursday about an urgent need to remove snow from the roof, where ice dams had formed. Bill arranged to have the job done the very next day, and quality of work was first rate. Yet even after the job was done Bill didn't charge us until he had called to verify that we were satisfied with the quality of work.

Description of Work: When I told Mr. Smith that I had an ice dam that was causing leakage into the house, he went out of his way to come over as soon as possible. He cleared the blockage which eliminated the leak. Although it was a Sunday, his rates were reasonable. I appreciate what he did and it relieved a lot of worry on my part.

The area had just experienced it's 2nd major blizzard in 4 days and traffic was only beginning to move. My townhouse had ice dams in front and back gutters. Phoned Bill early in the a.m. and, reached him right off! Despite the snow-filled roads, he was here in 3 hours. Raked and shoveled approx 1/2 the roof of ice and snow from the gutter up. Managed to free most of the back and all of the front gutter so melting could run through the downspout. Felt comfortable with him and the quality of his work from the onset. He explained everything carefully and in good detail to alleviate my fears. Given what could have been charged in the situation, the price was more than fair. This first time customer will definitely call BIll first for my future handyman needs.

After our initial contact, Bill came quite quickly to examine our house and create an estimate. While we were scheduling the time to install the door, we discussed some door options. He was able to accommodate the special door that we wanted. His initial estimate was that it would take around 4 hours, but the job ended up being much more complex, and took a couple days. Bill explained the issues along the way, and even came back at a later point to touch things up to his satisfaction. This is someone who is very detailed, and takes pride in his work. This is something I do myself in the work that I do, and it is a quality I look for and respect in any professional. Despite the fact that things took longer, Bill kept to his initial estimates, and performed an outstanding job. We love our new door, and am so glad we used a professional rather than taking on something which would've been a major headache. He was able to run with all the little challenges that arose during the installation. A trustworthy man who works hard, you'll really enjoy meeting Bill who's very easy to chat and work with. He comes with the highest recommendation I could give with anyone I've worked with through Angie's List.

My wife and I woke up this morning to find an ice dam in our attic of our townhouse resulting in leaks on 2 floors. I called Bill around 8:30 and he was at our place at 12:30, called when en route, diagnosed the problem, and negotiated through nearly 3 ft. of new snow to alleviate the water buildup. Bill was professional, prompt, and effectively stopped the leak. We look forward to using him on additional projects in the future and recommend him without hesitation. A true salt of the earth guy!

I didn't use them because of their price and their guarantees. They did say they would come back and fix it if it wasn't right but nothing was written down; it was word of mouth. The company I went with had guarantees.

Bill Smith installed a new shower door and bathroom fixtures. My old shower door was over 20 years old and grimy and dirty. Bill did a fantastic job installing the new shower door and replacing the old caulking. I asked him to pick out the fixtures to go along with the shower door and he matched everything nicely. He also worked on a number of miscellaneous items that I've been meaning to do for some time. Quality work, professional service and responsive to my questions. I have referred his services to friends and will definitely call him for future services.

Bill did a pretty good job installing our tile backsplash, though he said that he doesn't do lots of tile installation. He was able to start work a couple of days after we first contacted him. The job took him several hours longer than he intially estimated, but he stuck to his initial quote, which I appreciate. There were some minor spacing issues between some of the installed tile (if you look closely you can see the seam of one of the tile sheets, but it's usually covered anyway so no big deal), and the electrical outlets are not entirely flush with their covers. All in all, though, we added the new backsplash & countertops to get us through a few years until we can gut our kitchen and completely renovate it. This job looks good and will definitely serve that purpose.
Description of Work: We recently installed new countertops and wanted a backsplash. Bill installed a tile backsplash in our kitchen, approximately 13 square feet. This required moving electrical outlets, installing concrete backerboard where mortar board used to be, and the tiling itself.

Bill Smith was the consummate professional. He was a joy to work with. Punctual, friendly, he did what he said he would do to the highest professional standards. He worked very quickly and the finished product looked great. Our house got lots of immediate attention and a contract within a week. Since moving to Seattle from Maryland, there have been many times when my husband and I wish we could call Bill to work on our new house. Thanks a million, Bill!
Description of Work: We needed to get our house ready to sell quickly because we were moving across the country. We had screens that needed to be replaced, eaves that needed to be sanded and painted, lots of help with landscaping and general "curb appeal." We also had a couple of spots in the house where our walls needed a little patching up.

Bill Smith did an excellent job. He's very detail oriented and made sure everything was 100% safe, beautiful and to our satisfaction. He found rotted wood under our door frame that we didn't know about and rebuilt part of the foundation which could have led to a collasped part of our house if that had not been fixed.
