The crew worked quickly and rescheduled the finishing quickly around interruptions by rain.  They protected our cedar shake siding well with plastic.  They also refinished the lattice that covers the space all the way around this wrap-around deck.  However, we wish they had also spread plastic over the lawn beyond the deck, because the cleaner they sprayed through the deck railing killed the grass and poisoned the soil such that my reseeding failed.
Otherwise we are very pleased with the work and will have them back to renew the finish in three years.

We called Deckmasters to replace the back third of our deck, and to do a clean/stain.  When the guys started pulling the boards up, it was clear that the joist were all rotten from being too close to the ground.  They recommended that we rip out the whole thing and start over.  It was a lot more money than we had wanted to spend but safety first.  So we were in for a brand new deck.
Because of rain, it took a few more days than expected for the old deck to come out and the new deck to be fully built (4 days altogether).   Also the only access to our backyard is through the house, so they had to bring all of the old wood through the house to dispose of them.. and wow they cleaned up everything so well, there's not a trace of any dirt in the house.
The new deck is beautiful, well-built, sturdy and higher off the ground (to prevent water damage).  We couldn't get it stained right away because the new wood needed some time to breathe, so per Deckmaster's advice we waited about 1.5 months before calling them back to complete the job.
I was able to get on the schedule right away, but less than 12 hours after the stain job, we got 4 straight days of rain, which washed away a lot of the stain, and left the deck looking streaky and horrible.  We called Deckmasters and emailed a few pictures, thinking we would have to beg and convince them to come back.  But before we even had to say anything, they said -- no problem, we will come back and restain in, no charge.  Just like that!  No issues, no push back!  The guys (same ones who've been to our house 3 times now-- they are really awesome -- hardworking, fast and polite) came back for round two and stained it again.  This time the weather held out and it dried beautifully.
We are so happy with how the deck came out.  True, it was a looooong process and more money than we'd expected to spend.  But the guys at Deckmasters are great, and I'm glad to give them the business.

My deck needed cleaning badly.  It was grimy and had moldy spots.  After the cleaning, the deck looked like new.  The workers arrived on time for both the cleaning and staining and worked very efficiently.  They were pleasant and explained what was done after the job was completed.  The stain color turned out beautifully.  The deck now looks like a hardwood floor.  Based on other quotes for an Ipe deck, the price was extremely reasonable.  The estimator did arrive late, but he called and notified me that he was delayed.  Overall, I am very pleased with the job that they did.

They didn't show up today when I took the day off to supervise the project. I called and they said that they had already done it earlier when I had specifically asked for today as the appoinment. The deck had been fixed on one side and the other side is loose now. I called them back and explained the situation again and how frustrated I that they had already came. They just hung up the phone on me.

"Thank you for your feedback. This does not sound like the type of service that DeckMaster provides. We're more than glad to address your concerns, your satisfaction is what we always aim for. Anyway you have a warranty on product performance which no other company offers. We are a locally family based business and we're not going anywhere. Therefore, if you are not happy with any part of the project I would personally be glad to come out and discuss your concerns and evaluate and confirm everything you mention so that we can find the best approach. Thank you and we look forward to be of service and hear your feedback. Please call the office and ask for Jose and tell them you're calling regarding a respond I placed on Angie's list."

Will update this review in a few days after everything has had a chance to dry.  But if first impressions count for anything, this group has outstanding professionalism and a touch of good old fashioned customer service in the salesperon's attitude.

UPDATE: 10/1/2013

Deckmasters was great! The reprsentative was punctual, professional and personable.  The guys who did the work showed up right on time and cleaned up when the job was finished.  The work was excellent, but the wood came out darker than expected for a transparent seal.

After scheduling an appointment for a free estimate, I was contacted to confirm the appointment and later to reschedule when the project manager was unable to make the appointment due to a family emergency.  The replacement project manager arrived on time, quickly made an estimate and discussed my options with me as well as offering a discount for booking that day (10%).  He thoroughly explained what would be done and then scheduled the work.  The work was done in 3 stages.  A crew arrived the next day to remove, disassemble, and haul away the hot tub and sweep up the mess.  They were done in 20 minutes.  The second crew arrived later in the week on time for the scheduled appointment and performed all the deck repairs and cleaning.  The third crew was scheduled two days later, arrived on time and quickly performed the restaining of the deck.   All three crews were courteous, professional, and efficient.  My deck now looks wonderful.  I am very pleased  with the work.

Chemical wash removed all prior sealant. Porch looked nice when they finished, but landing and stairs were soaking up moisture and turning black in less than a year. They had never done that before. When I called, the company initially insisted that was normal but on 11/10/2011 (note I had paid for 3-year stain), an inspector ordered  a reservice to "Clean & recoat porch and deck".  A crew sprayed the outside of porch, stairs and landing March 20, 2012 without cleaning first. It looks awful, with drips and streaks, and still was not sealed. Crews did not come when scheduled and DID come when not scheduled. They left junk in my yard and would not come back for it. After the drippy spraying, no one would return my calls.
I am disturbed that when I search for a company to repair the damage that DeckMaster did, DeckMaster is the first on the recommended list.

NOTE that the provider response did not appear until after I had finally found a company to repair the damage done by DeckMaster. The other company said there was no evidence that my porch had been sealed. There were months that no one from DeckMaster would talk to me about the problem (phone answerer would say someone would call me back and no one did) much less look at the damage and I gave up calling. A warranty is nonsense if it requires going to court to replace a porch that rotted from mistreatment.

3-tier estimate provided, finish option discussed, samples shown.
Customer service rep contacted customer for full and clear explanation of payment and scheduling process.
Tentative appointment was made for day one cleaning.
Weather did not permit original date to be kept and customer was fully informed by phone of rescheduling.
Prompt arrival at appointed time on day of cleaning - customer is not required to be at home.

The contractor did a great job.  Once they got started, they kept to the proposed schedule on rebuilding the deck.  A couple of days after completing the reconstruction, the cleaning crew came to remove the stain and mildew.  There were markings on the wood, which the contractor told us would fade over time.  We explained that we were planning on selling the house and would he be able to sand of the markings.  He obliged us by doing so.  We were very happy with the work.

The power-washing, staining, and a small about of repair carpentry work they did to my back deck and my front landing appear to have been performed competently.
Ideally, they said the entire process should take 2 visits over 3 days. Given that it rained on their second visit, it should have taken 3 visits over 1 week. Instead it took 4 visits over 2.5 weeks.
When they power-washed my front landing, they sprayed water under my front door. The water and the dirt it dislodged fouled my entry-way carpet and soaked some papers that were on the floor near the door. When I complained, they basically said the fault was mine in having a gap under my front door. But all doors have at least some gap, and if they had been more careful or if they had just briefly placed a board on the outer plate in front of the door before spraying the landing below, this would not have happened.
The estimator who came out wrote on the contract that they would sand my small front landing without additional charge. But when they came out for what they thought was the last time, they did not do the sanding. I had to argue with them in order for them to complete what they wrote into the contract that they were going to do.
When they left after the 3rd visit without completing the work, they charged me in full for the remainder of the contract, even though their contract states that they wouldn?t complete charging until after the complete was entirely completed. They then told me that I was placed on ?standby? status for completing the sanding in their written contract. Only when I threatened to call the credit card company and dispute the final charge did they put me higher in their queue to complete the work that they had in writing agreed to do, and for which they had already charged me in full. When they finally did come out to finish the job, they did only a coarse sanding, which removed the small number of old semi-splintered areas and replaced them with new semi-splintered areas.
The estimator gave me a specific time window in which he would arrive. By the end of that window he hadn?t arrived and hadn?t called. Only when I called their office was I told that he was running late. I should have told them to forget it right there and then.

First off, DeckMaster honored an old price quote, so points for that. They thuroughly explained the process and answered questions. They had to cancel their initial appointment, but we were able to reschedule without much delay. They came out to treat the deck and strip it down to the bare wood. It looked very good. There was some minor damage to some plants nearby, but they survived. I suggest emphasizing the need to be careful around any plants/gardens. They came out a few days later to stain the deck. We are happy with their work.

These company did an excellent job. I set an appointment for the estimator to come our but he had a family emergency and couldn't come that day but the office called and advised me and set another appointment. That day the office called to advise me he was coming but running slightly late. They constantly kept me informed during the estimate and also while the work was being performed. The estimator came out and, unlike other companies, actually cleaned a small spot of the deck. They have 2 cleaning packages and he showed me both on my actual deck. We selected the Restoration Package as this really got the wood looking like new. The day they were to come to start work it had been raining all night and also that morning. The workers showed up and looked at the deck but advised me it was too wet to do the job properly so we rescheduled for another day. That day they came and did an excellent job. Covered the bushes around the deck and also protected the side of the house as they sprayed near the house to prevent any chemicals from damaging the siding. I was not certain how it would come out but when they were done the wood looked like new. They came back a few days later to finish the work..sanding the horizontal wood surfaces and applying the stain. Friends have remarked how great the deck now looks.  We were uncertain as to which color of the stain to use but the estimator told us they could bring a piece of sample wood with the 2 different stains on it so we can see how it actually looks. Unfortunately this did not happen. When I called the office and asked about this after they had finished the cleaning process I was told they don't do this and instead emailed me a link to the stain manufacturer's web site color chart. This was similar to what I had been given. We selected the color we wanted but after it was applied it actually looked much more orange than the color samples. Had we actually had real samples we might have selected a different color. However, the deck looks like new and I have no problem using them again.

The estimator was courteous and easy to work with.  He did not push me into buying any particular package, but he explained in detail exactly what was included in each of the packages.  The people who came out to do the actual work were also very courteous; they did very careful work and cleaned up after themselves.  No overspray got on my house's siding or trim even though it was a breezy day.  My deck looks great, and I am looking forward to using it frequently this summer.

The service:  We agreed that they would start on a Friday and would be done in one or two days.  On the service date, they did not arrive until late afternoon, and could only work for two hours before the sun went down and they had to leave for the day.  It's not that big of a deal, except that it was a Friday, and they don't work on weekends, so we were set back until Monday when they could arrive to work on the project again.

They came back on Monday to continue the first phase of the project (chemical clean and pressure-less wash).  I was at work during that day, and let me tell you, I wish I had been at home to stop them from doing what they did.  My deck looked like it had been chewed up by pit bull.  There were pieces actually torn out.  The chemical peel resulted in a huge pile of melted residue, which was simply flushed out onto the lawn.  And the lawn - oh, what a disaster.  It was a mud pit.  I had to re-sod the entire area behind the back.

I had a call with the project manager and he promised that the sanding process would make the deck "smooth and like new" before the sealer was applied.  They arrived two days later to complete the sanding / sealing process.  The sanding did not accomplish anything - the deck is about as "smooth" as a five day old beard.  And they certainly did not nail down loose boards, as promised.  In fact, the whole deck creaks when we walk on it now.

Finally, and most importantly, the sealer itself is not what I had expected.  It is extremely thin.  If you are expecting something with a protective coat (like a thick polyeurathane), this is not your product.  The wood feels as if its raw - in fact, we placed a lightweight wood chair onto the deck and it scratched the surface.

Unfortunately, I don't have confidence that my deck will last past two or three more years.  The Deck Masters product did make my deck "look" new - as if you stripped the wood down and applied fake tanning lotion (basically, it went from gray to bright orange).  From far away, it looks nice and new.  But upon close inspection, its quite disappointing.

In summary:  The service team in Montgomery County is responsive, friendly, and pleasant to work with.  The price is fair given the amount of effort involved.  But the quality of the finished product (and the destroyed lawn) isn't worth the hassle.

"I'd like to thank you for your feedback. This definitely does not sound like the type of service that we normally provide for our customers. DeckMaster provides all of its customers with a warranty on product performance which no other company offers. If at anytime you feel your stain is failing you can contact the office and we will come out and evaluate the wood and preservative. I'd be happy to come out to discuss your concerns, evaluate, and confirm everything you mention so that we can find the best solution. Please call the office and ask to have the a PM come out for an evaluation, so that we may address your feedback.Thank you and we look forward to be of service."

Very friendly phone operator made our appointment. Estimator called the day before to reconfirm appointment time. He was on time and thorough. He provided a lot of information and available choices that we could make with varying price points and warranties.
Workers were on time and worked hard during the job. Entire job was completed within one week. The owner volunteered to visit Home Depot to find new caps for the deck on his own time. He wasn't able to find th so he reinstalled the old ones with new mountings.
We found the owner and workers to be thorough and would hire them again in the future.
While they were power washing the siding, one of the men let me know that the window air conditioning unit might allow water into the house. I hadn't considered that and I was appreciative that they pointed it out to me.

I had a leak behind a wall in my garage which I initially thought was coming from the roof -- only to learn from my roofer that it was due to improper flashing between the deck and the house.  At that point, I called DeckMaster (Germantown, MD) based on their stellar reviews on Angie's List.
The company owner, Jose, came to my house and gave me a professional estimate.  He sent out his crew a few weeks later and they did a great job -- the leak has stopped.  They had to remove and replace a few boards to access the flashing, and their work was neat and professional.  I should add that they arrived on time and clearly communicated throughout this process.  They're coming back in a couple of months to stain the new boards after the wood cures.  We will use them for future decking needs.
I am very pleased with DeckMaster's work and would highly recommend them.
