High's Chimney Service

Serviceman came out and performed excellent maintenance on my electrical fireplace.

I guess they did a good job because I couldn't really see it, but their customer service was good. I have referred them to other people.

They did a good job. They were punctual and on time. They were neat and clean with what they did and we were just happy with what they did.

They cleaned our chimney and recommended we had it lined. We wanted a second opinion. They made me feel intimidated.

They first said they'd be able to come out Friday of the week I'd called, but when I told them I had a coupon they told me something about how coupons required a different schedule. They then scheduled me for Mar. 5, that following Monday. I checked, and the coupon didn't specify any "black out dates" or similar restrictions, so I called back immediately. I was told to call back in the morning - cut to the next morning and the lady I spoke to completely contradicted what the previous operator had told me. Unfortunately, Friday was now full. In the middle of her rattling off excuses not being able to get out Friday, I had her schedule me for that Monday. The guys arrived on time and ran their cleaner/camera, and climbed on the roof to get a picture of the top of the chimney. They were fairly quick, and after a half hour had me look at a live video of the inside of my chimney, focusing mainly on cracks and sediment buildup. Sad to say, I wasn't terribly surprised when they told me my chimney needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up, for approximately $10,000. I had to get back to work and didn't argue the point but we actually had a structural engineer come out and verify that there is NOTHING wrong with the chimney. In my opinion, the coupon just gets them out so they can up-sell you on other services. They seem well rated here though, and they did, in fact, clean my chimney.

High's estimate was very competitive; both the estimator and the work crew showed up on time. They took reasonable care to limit disruption and cleaned up each day. Access to one side of the house involved inconveniencing our neighbor and the crew was very courteous in dealing with them. Since not all of the brick could be salvaged and the brick from which the house was built is no longer available, the project supervisor made trips to two separate brickyards to find bricks from among which we could choose one that was a decent match. We were also impressed that a safety inspector visited the site to check on the project; all of the work was done 30+ feet above ground level from scaffolding constructed on site.

Great experience from first visit to work day. Prompt both days. Very good at keeping work area clean and dust from the rest of the house.

It was a positive experience but we decided not to have the work performed based on the cost.

They were fabulous. They did fabulous work and it was a good price. They put down cloths and they cleaned up their mess. They did beautiful work. They were very professional and they did the work in one day. We would use them again and we have recommended them to people.

In 2011 we noticed a huge white stain on the outside of our chimney. Made another appointment with High's and they never showed up. I did mention during the setting of our appointment that (I thought) we were having problems with their previous work. Had another chimney service (XL Services LLC) come out and the chimney sweep said that the crown sealant was put on before the mortar was dry and now the sealant was peeling off and the mortar needed to be repaired and new sealant put on. Cost of mortar repair and cleaning $298.00 with an estimate of another $200.00 to put the sealant on in the spring time. I will say, so far the fireplace seems to be working just fine (except for the observation crown sealant issue) all is well.

We got a groupon offered by high's for the sweeping and inspection of two chimneys at our home. We were given an appointment window of between noon and 2 pm. At approximately 11:53 am, the High's van pulled into my driveway, the gentleman sat in the vehicle for a couple minutes, then pulled away. He returned at approximately 12:45, and again proceeded to sit in the van. Neither time did he exit the vehicle and ring my doorbell, knock on my door, or telephone me. He just sat in my driveway, then drove away. I called High's office and did not get an answer. I left a voicemail detailing the odd behavior and am awaiting a response. We will be seeking a groupon refund and I highly discourage anyone from contracting this company to do any work for them.

High's came out on 10/15/11 to clean our chimney. They photographed the inside and showed us where there were some real problems (which we suspected..). They did the cleaning but said we'd need to have a new liner installed. We had also been thinking about putting in a new wood stove. They said if we did that it would be the same price as a new liner and the liner would come with the wood stove so that is what we did. We LOVE our new wood stove (and so do the dogs!). They were on time, scheduled us in quickly and everything went quickly, was clean and professional and reasonably priced. They gave us a lot of tips (how to clean it, etc.) and were very personable and not in a rush to get to the next place. I would definitely recommend them and use them again in the future.

I did not spend anything for the estimate. My overall experience with them was bad. They were very responsive. They were punctual. I would not recommend them. I would not use them. I should really report them because I think that they are crooks. They give one very high quotes for work that is unnecessary. They are extremely pushy with one.

I had signed up for the work at a home show in Timonium,MD. They called to schedule the work but they showed up before I ever called back to confirm the date. Since they were here, I decided to let them do the work. They did the work (so I assumed) , I paid them then they left. With in the week the weather got cold enough to get the wood burning stove fired up. This stove was working fine at the end of last winter and is VERY easy to get started. The fire would not start and the smoke was backing up into the house. I called them and it took 4 calls before I got a person from the company. The first 3 calls ,I left messages with an answering service and no one ever called me back. They wanted to schedule some one to come out in 2 to 3 weeks. I decided to check it out myself. I contacted Courtland Hardware in Fallston, MD where I bought it and they told me exactly what the problem was. On the newer , high efficiency stoves, there is a ceramic plate that sits on top of 4 steel baffles which reburns and redirects the flames and heat, minimizing heat loss. High's apparently swept the chimney and allowed the creosote to drop on this ceramic plate and back up the flue. The debris was packed in the bottom of the flue totally blocking it. They apparently never recovered any debris and could not have done any sort of inspection when the flue was clogged with 2 GALLONS of creosote. What a mess. I did learn a lot about my stove. After I got the stove working fine I contacted the company for a refund. They said no because I did not let them try to correct the mistake. It was cold and I did not want to wait for them to come back. They should know more about these things than I should. When you hire a professional to do this kind of work you assume they know the equipment that is on the market. I am glad the stove did not start, It could have started a fire. I understand them not refunding me, I could have waited. It would have been good business to refund me, I have several more flues to clean and maintain.

They were dynamite! I think they’re excellent folks. They’re very professional, did a wonderful job, and cleaned up after themselves extremely well. If I could give them A+’s across the board, that’s what I’d do.

I made the appointment time several weeks before we closed on our house, knowing we wanted to have chimney caps installed. They had one of the best rates, although it still seemed a little high given how long it took, but since I wasn't going to climb up on the roof I was glad they were around. They arrived a little early thanks to good traffic, installed the two chimney caps quickly (15-20 minutes max), and even told me my chimney was in good shape otherwise (yeah!). They were professional and courteous.

I was not happy with them because I asked them not to do the work and they still came ahead and did it. I just moved into a townhouse so they were just supposed to come out and give me an estimate to repoint some bricks at the top of the chimney because that was loose. They inspected the chimney and swept it; that was fine. It needed to be repointed and there was moss growing down the side. I made arrangements for them to come out but I was working that day so I called and asked if they could hold off doing that because I wanted to get another opinion on it. They came out and did it anyway and didn't do a good job because then I had it respected because I could not use the chimney again because where they had covered it, it was all cracked. They also didn't do a good job of repointing it. I will not use them again in the future.

High's gave a fair estimate, but the first work wasn't acceptable. That said, when I complained to the owner, he sent a more experienced team of workers who tore down the first try and rebuilt it - it looks beautiful. Owner came personnally to inspect the second rebuild. He stood behind the work and made sure it was done right. Since he went the extra mile, I would use them again.

They do great work. They are responsive and professional.

Everything went ok. The overall quality of the work was fine but I thought there estimate was a little high. I would recommend getting a second opinion. The crew worked very hard. I have no complaints with them.

We recently purchased a 1925 bungalow and knew that the chimney needed extensive work. Bits of the terra cotta liner had fallen down into the fireplace and had also largely blocked the furnace flue, the top of the chimney was deteriorating, the firebox was falling apart, and there was no damper or protection from animals at the top. I solicited 6 estimates and all of them specified for the most part the same scope of work. High's was the last company to provide me with an estimate and I was most impressed with Gene's expertise and communication skills. He arrived on time in the morning for the estimate appointment was all business and matter of fact and I did not feel like I was getting the hard sell like I had from his competitors. His price was 20% lower than anyone elses and he gave me an additional break when I agreed to have the work done that day as he had a crew on the beach. A team of 4 or 5 workmen arrived within the hour and worked h*** bent for leather all day. They appeared to be skilled and conscientious. When they were done and gone there was not a sign that they had been there, not so much as a speck of soot.
