Description of Work: They cleaned the chimney. They were very punctual, efficient, clean and through. There were several suggestions as to getting a new fireplace insert, rebuilding our chimney ( the brick was falling down per the rep.), rust from the antenna causing damage. Since I only wanted to get the chimney cleaned I did not put much weight on getting more work done. I would definitely get another opinion for any other work. But,they did a great job for cleaning the chimney.

Description of Work: I contacted High's in regard to the purchase and installation of a propane direct vent Regency fireplace within my fireplace. They spent 90% of their time on the estimate visit checking my chimney and finding several issues needing repairs that no other chimney expert I have engaged thought were real. They also proved ignorant of the Regency fireplace - which they purport to sell.

Description of Work: High's came in did a thorough inspection, took the time to show us what they found and explain the remedy. The showed up on time, they were very careful to make sure that a notoriously dirty job did not make a mess of our house. The price was fair and reasonable. There were no hidden costs and no try to sell us more then what we needed.

Description of Work: First swept chimney then inspected with optical video cable to show me the condition of the flue which was cracking and falling apart in 50 year-old chimney. Video was very clear and easy to see needed repairs. High's offered to return the next day to install new flue liner thru entire length of chimney, install new concrete at top of chimney, install new caps and clean/service firebox. The crew was right on time on a Sunday, completed the work in the promised 4-5 hours and did a very good job. Have used the fireplace several times without any problems.

Description of Work: Like a previous review, I feel like I was being sold a bill of goods--i.e., a service I did not need or ask for. I replaced my oil furnace with a natural gas furnace, which requires and inspection of the chimney. The service man seemed like a salesman more than an inspector, and I felt like he viewed me as a hapless woman from the very start. He told me horror stories about carbon monoxide in my house because of broken tiles in the chimney, which he could not/did not show me. What was supposed to be a service for $150 turned into a project estimated to be $2,500. I have another company coming at the end of the week, and I have no doubt that there is nothing wrong with my chimney.

Response from High's Chimney Service
We appreciate that the customer is offended. So said, we are by far the injured party here. This is an unreasonable person who is sullying our reputation because she'd rather shoot the messenger than deal with the facts: · “I replaced my oil furnace with a natural gas furnace…” The technician explained that chimneys converted from oil to gas have a special problem in that the condensate mixes with sulfur to make for sure, and probably rapid, deterioration of the flue. · “…which requires an inspection of the chimney.” There’s a reason for that. The people who wrote the building and housing codes know that older chimneys are generally unfit for use with natural gas appliances. · The technician explained that the flue size is to be sized to the appliance. Improperly- sized flues can cause both poor draft (and yes: you can wind up with CO in your house from poor draft!) and rapid deterioration of the flue. · The technician offered to show her the interior of the chimney on the ChimScan and she declined. We feel we are fighting an uphill battle. Perhaps we should have turned a blind eye to the problems we saw and just told customer what she wanted to hear. If this is what the lady wants I’m sure she’ll find another company to provide it. We believe we should report problems if we see any, propose to repair any that our company can, and rely on people to say yes or no. We understand when people chose not to follow our recommendations, but we don’t expect to be insulted for doing our jobs. For the record and to be completely clear, that flue is damaged, it’s not properly sized and the damage is going to get worse as time goes by. We inspected it and it failed. Giving us this sort of “bad advertising” for doing our jobs properly is unfair. We made three attempts to contact the customer and she will not accept our calls. We will refund her money.

Description of Work: High's did a cleaning job for us and discovered serious damage to the entire system (we knew that repairs would be needed soon but did not realize how bad it had gotten). The estimate for repairs was done on the same day, with detailed/written description of what they were recommending. They also made sure to show us the damage using a camera from the top and from the bottom. Since we had scheduled this during the summer, we were offered a discount if the work was done before Fall. We decided that the cost was reasonable for the work needed (and we have used them in the past for other work and found them to be reasonable with their charges) and the discount was significant enough to go ahead and schedule the repairs. For the cleaning and the repair, they were on time, polite and careful to protect our wooden floor and furniture on the inside of the house and significant shrubbery around the chimney. Two individuals did both the cleaning and the repair and completed the work ahead of what they had scheduled. Once the repairs had been completed they were careful not to put the flue back in until both my husband and I had inspected the repairs, both visually and with a camera for the area higher up. They also left us with a written description of what they had repaired and the materials used (cleaned out the old broken fire tiles, chimney cap replaced with weather guard, new steel tube with new insulation between the brick and new tube, repair of the firebox and back wall). We found them to be professional, punctual and performed the work exactly as described. We will definitely be using them again!

Description of Work: As members of Dominion Virginia Power Water Heater Replacement program, we were told we needed our Flue inspected prior to replacement. We were given one contractor to call outside our area, who was not available. I spent 4 hours phoning Chimney Sweeps, as that was the business of the recommended contractor; Apparently, this is a very busy time of year for chimney sweeps/inspectors because the range oft inspection dates I could have was from 11/28/2011 to January 2012. As we were without hot water, the range was unacceptable. When HIgh's first told me their next available date which was not in the immediate future, I said "No thanks, we are without hot water and need an inspection sooner" Within 10 minutes High's called me back, stating they had consulted with the dispatch supervisor, and if I would be willing to work within a 4 hour window rather than 2, they would come on Monday morning. I was quoted 99.00 for an inspection. I have no idea if this is a fair price or not, as I received quotes for 50.00 to 250.00, leaving me question if I was stating my request/need properly. When the repairman came with their equipment ready to sweep the chimney and clean, I explained my need again, and checked if their would be a price difference for what I was asking for. The serviceman said he knew I was quoted 139.00 and would request a price confirmation. I stated that was not what I was quoted, and my price was immediately matched. The inspectors worked quickly, efficiently and thoroughly, even telling me I may want to warn my neighbors of some concerns they observed. I said they could leave cards for my neighbors, and they said that was not what they did. They held to the price quoted, made accommodations to service me, when others couldn't, certified my flue, and explained the procedure.

Read above description..
Description of Work: Our chimney had been leaking inside the fireplace and there was an ever-growing water stain at the top of the wall where it meets the celing in front of the fireplace. We called our roofer in case it had anything to do with the roof that had been replaced 5 years ago. They took photos and showed that there were some cracks on the outside of the chimney, so we spent $900 for them to put a copper cap around the chimney. That did NOT solve it...With the next big rain storm, we had leaking again. Just by chance, High's Chimney Service called about routine cleaning and we mentioned out problem. The next day, Gene Grimmett came out and told us that roofers don't ever look down the entire chimney. He did that and found that there were many cracks all up and down the inside of the chimney (house is 26 years old). He was so professional and knowledgeable that we accepted his $7000 bid to completely replace the fireplace (also we knew friends that had used High's for repairs and recommend them). Although our bricks were an unusual color that they promised to match, they started the next day, working Friday, Saturday, and finishing up on a Monday. They matched the color beautifully and it is exactly the same shape as the original one (which we made them promise to do) and are extremely pleased with their work, their professionalism...Also, Gene told me that he trains his own guys, ...they are his team, not pickup people...and they are not illegals which is important to us. Excellent work!
