That was our second project with DMV Kitchen & Bath (June 2015). I thought the first team, who worked on our first project, was good. This team was even better, even superb!!
Worked very hard- Jhonny Flores and Felix Lopez came by 8am and left around 7pm, with only about 10-15min lunch break. Almost non-stop!!
Very dedicated – I bought some titles (P.E.I. =5), without realizing how hard it was to cut. For the piece under our toilet, machine failed to cut right, so Felix manually cut a little by little until a perfect circle was generated. Bravo!!!
Jhonny asked us frequently asked our opinion and made sure we were satisfied.
Very experienced and smart- they knew the right way to make things right.
Very clean- First thing every morning, they covered floor, walls and any other place may be affected. And cleaned up every night. I agree with previous reviewer that it seemed they had never been there, except the work progress every day.
I have worked with many contractors for my previous houses and this one, and I have to say Jhonny Flores and Felix are one of the best.
Also, I want to comment on flexibility – Project Manager Javier gave us very itemized estimates, later with labor and materials separated per my request. I was even given flexibility to buy/order certain items myself, so I was not limited to the supply they had.
They respond to service call quickly - almost a year later, the door started to squeak. I sent out email request. The office responded very quickly and scheduled Jhonny to come back and fix the problem.
No person nor company is perfect, DMV Kitchen & Bath has downsides too.
- They were extremely busy, so be prepared to wait long for estimation and getting on their schedule. But if you are not in a big hurry, they are worth the waiting.
- Can organize customer’s order better. In our case, there were mistakes. But in the end, all were sorted out to our satisfaction.
-We wish the granite subcontractor had suggested us to cut stone to fit our wall, not cut our wall to fit stone.
Despite the fact that accidents happened and some things didn't get done right the first time - the fact that as a company they take pride in their work and want to ensure their customer's are left happy to have worked with them makes me want to work with them again in the future. They are not cheap and I will say - spending that much money - expectations are high.
Their work was clean and professional 88% of the time.
The accuracy of their work was 75% of the time - which did cause some delays in the project - but not to make them later than their estimated finish date. They understand customer service.
Towards the end of the project I will say that we needed to pay extra attention to the quality of work and details and we may have had to pester them repeatedly on a few smaller items, but whenever something was wrong and I pointed it out to them - they were able to fix it within 24h to 48hrs. And ultimately, they did finish on time - regardless of all that.
The kitchen was a complete tear down to the floor boards and bare walls. Updates included with new ceramic floor tile, cabinets and Silestone countertops. We also paid them to install a new dishwasher, new microwave, and rework the gas line for an existing GE Profile gas double oven stove.
The bathroom also required a tear down to install a new ceramic tile shower and bathroom floor tile. It was a battle to get them to do what we wanted but they finally completed the task two weeks late.
Kitchen ? we fired two crews from the project. We had trouble communicating with most of their people because have very poor language skills. DMV was supposed to conduct an asbestos test to determine if the existing kitchen flooring contained asbestos before it was removed. They told us about 10 days after we signed the contract the old vinyl floor had asbestos. We asked for the lab results and received nothing so we paid $110 to have our own conducted by EMSL Analytical in Beltsville. Our suspicions we correct, the floor did not have asbestos but the glue used to secure the floor to the subfloor did. So DMV did not do testing and had to repay us for the test. DMV finally told us they used a test kit purchased from a home improvement store to conduct a mold test! We finally fired their company at the end of the project when the dishwasher they were paid to install came loose from under the counter. They broke the oven door handle when they picked up the stove by the door during the reinstall. We caught DMV doing so many things incorrectly that we almost called the state EPA after they dumped mortar and cement in our yard twice without asking (we made them clean it up). We saw them using tools incorrectly and none of them wore ear protection. DMV?s cabinet installer used a Sonic straight edge cutting tool to cut a hole in the cabinet above the microwave rather than obtaining a hole saw or jig saw to do the job. One of the managers had to come by and rework the inside of the cabinet with facing to cover the mess. DMV lost our cabinet order and then tried to give us a kitchen corner cabinet we did not order and told us the manufacturer did not make a lazy Susan for size corner cabinet we ordered. We called the manufacturer who told us just the opposite. So we told DMV what the manufacturer said and that they had to order a new cabinet, remove the old one, remove the Silestone countertop (it was a one piece 112? long slab and took two installers to lift) and install the correct corner cabinet and then reinstall the Silestone. DMV?s ?master electrician? did sloppy work and I had to show him where to run wiring. They threw out an almost brand new Waste King kitchen disposal ? which we forced them to replace. They dented the entry door facing for a custom Provia entry door. We held back $300 to have it replaced. In all we held back $2,000 due to the poor work. At best they were disorganized and unprofessional.
Before DMV could do any work, mold remediation companies demolished the Kitchen (with the exception of the walls and ceiling), the Master bath, and the Front hallway and Powder bath ceilings. DMV demolished the rest. The men put up new boards on the ceiling and walls of the Master bath and new drywall on the walls and ceilings; laid down new floors with cement board; installed ceramic tiles with grout and sealer on the floors; installed plumbing with fixtures and valves; installed a garbage disposal; installed a glass door system to enclose the shower and a shower pan with centered drain and waterproof membrane in the Master bath; carved out a niche for shampoo in the shower and bathtub walls; installed a bathtub with an overflow drain in the Hall bath; installed ceramic tiles on shower and bathtub walls; installed vanities with granite countertops and backsplashes, cutout sinks, and mirrors (one of which was custom-made) in all the bathrooms; installed a quartz countertop, ceramic backsplash, and large stainless steel sink in the Kitchen; installed cabinets in the Kitchen; installed knobs and pulls on all the vanities and cabinets; installed new electrical outlets and switch plate covers in the bathrooms and recessed lights in the shower and tub; installed recessed lights with dimmers on the kitchen ceiling and countertops; installed new light fixtures in the bathrooms; installed new exhaust fans in the bathrooms; installed a floor vent in the Kitchen; installed 3 toilets; installed towel bars, towel rings, TP holders, and robe hooks in the bathrooms, installed new appliances in the Kitchen, including a stove, refrigerator, and microwave oven; prepped and painted the ceilings and walls of our kitchen, bathrooms, and Front hallway with 2 coats of paint; and finally they removed and hauled away all trash on a daily basis.
And that's not all. Beyond the original written contract they installed drywall in a hole near the Basement closet cut out due to mold; prepped and painted 2 walls in the Basement damaged by water leakage; installed a new vanity in the Master bedroom to match the vanity in the nearby Master bath; prepped and painted the walls in the Master bedroom near the entrance to the Master bath; replaced 4 brushed nickel door knobs along with a front door lock; replaced a 2-outlet electrical box in the Basement with a 4-outlet box to accommodate our new washer, dryer, and sump pump; installed a very large sink in the Kitchen so I could handwash small loads; installed 2 trash bins inside the kitchen cabinet; replaced our old ceiling light and fan in the Kitchen with a new one; repaired the glass sliding door in the Kitchen; replaced the screen door on the other side of the sliding glass door; installed a hanging basket for fruits and vegetables; installed some white vertical blinds (which I bought) in place of some dreary, old drapes; installed a new divider between the foyer and living room to separate 2 different styles of ceiling; replaced metal shelves in the pantry and near the Master bath with wider wooden shelves and painted them; replaced a wooden shelf and rack in the coat closet with new ones and painted them; helped me set up a dehumidifier in the basement; painted a wall near the stairs going from the Foyer to the second floor along with the stair railing and wooden trim; installed a new light in the Foyer; and secured some loose metal ducts in the basement. Rolando's men also reinstalled an incorrectly installed pair of exterior shutters on a brick wall. They also installed 5 new pairs of shutters. So far they are still secure.
DMV's men worked in teams and were always professional, punctual, hard-working, congenial, and responsive to questions. When one fell short of expectations, Rolando removed him and replaced him with a more responsible person. With the exception of the awesome Mongolian countertop men, all were Hispanic and at least one man on each team could speak English fluently with me. Muchos gracias to Maynor, Orlando (2), Pelix, Omar, Oscar, Alex (Alli), David, Frank, Junior, John, Francisco, Hernando, Cesar, Fidel, Grover, Alberto, Morris, Ray, and Willi (forgive me if I forgot anyone.)
The whole project took almost three months with men regularly coming in Monday through Saturday most weeks. My husband and I lived in the house during that time and although the construction generated a great deal of dust, the men contained their work areas, cleaned off the dust in our living quarters daily, hauled away all trash, and graciously put up with the inconveniences of our coming in and out of their work areas.
Rolando greatly expanded our storage space not only in the design of the kitchen cabinets but in the widening of the pantry and Master bath shelves, and the addition of drawers to the Hall Bath. His recommendation that we give preference to light colors also gave the areas an appearance of spaciousness. Rolando's men utterly transformed the Master bath from a small, moldy space that no one had used in a couple years (mostly due to a hole in the floor we were afraid of falling through) to a spacious, sacred retreat that everyone now wants to use. The unique blend of gray, white, pale pink, gray, and lime green colors, the distinct design of the ceramic tiles on the floor and walls, plus my picture of a lotus blending all these colors together creates an absolutely exquisite space for cleansing body and soul. The men also transformed the kitchen from a drab pink, navy blue, and beige space to a sunny, earthy blend of yellow, white, turmeric, black, gray, and taupe colors that stimulates digestion and creates a sense of well being. The Front hallway leading into the Kitchen has a similar mixture of colors in the paint and woodcut pictures that lead naturally into the kitchen. Rolando's wise selection of a soft yellow paint for the walls in these 2 areas instead of the pale green I first suggested prevented me from spoiling the dramatic effect. The Powder bath off to the side of the Front hallway offers a soothing contrast with its blend of charcoal, light gray, pale blue, white, and pink colors.
While DMV completed our remodeling for the most part on November 7, the company gave us a 3-month warranty on its work. On Dec. 5 they returned to fix a broken tub stopper, put cauking around the tub where there were cracks, touched up holes on 2 drawers in the kitchen, and touched up some painting near the basement doors because I had decided to move some of my hanging pictures. The tub stopper later gave us trouble and on Jan. 11 a different person came to look at it. He took it with him and returned 2 days later with a new part and installed it. We have not had any trouble since. DMV did an awesome job for us. We highly recommend this company and may call them again to do some more remodeling.
DMV renovated our entire kitchen including removing walls and they did an excellent job about 9 months ago. And recently one of the floor tiles started coming loose. We sent an email to DMV and Cemmy immediately responded asking our availability for someone to come out and take a look. Within a week, a small work crew showed up prepared to fix the loose tile. They ended up having to replace a few more tiles to be sure the issue wouldn't reoccur. Within a few days, all of the work of tearing up the old tiles, prepping the subfloor, laying the new tile, and applying grout was completed. The crew did a great job, you would never be able to tell which tiles were replaced.
I highly recommend using DMV Kitchen and Bath. They have been responsive, professional, hardworking from the moment we began working with them. We plan to continue work with them for any other renovations.
