I was so impressed with the work and service I received with my FIRST experience with Handyman Matters of Frederick, I scheduled an additional job. This time I was not present during the work being performed but was WOWED when I got home to see the excellent results! Each task on the "punch-out" list was executed perfectly! I'm so happy to know I can trust a company to actually deliver as promised. My contractor Keith is a skilled craftsman who has demonstrated he can handle any request! Mary is absolutely a pleasure to speak with on the phone and can answer all your questions. I congratulate Ed Salmon on his high standards and companies excellence. I have and will, recommend Handyman Matters to friends and family
Description of Work: Install light fixtures, ceiling fan, install cabinets and countertop
Will work with you on obtaining required materials. The majority I had purchased prior to job, some I needed to complete installation. The contractor is there to guide you and will be able to pick-up if necessary for a small trip fee. Keith started working on time from the minute he arrived. I had a laundry room off the family room I wanted tiled, a roughed in bathroom to finish and doors hung . I was surprised at the weath of construction knowledge from carpentry to plumbing and electrical this one contractor possessed! He had it all covered. And the result, well all I can say is this small "reno" has added so much value to my home. Its no longer a place I dread going into. I must admit as the job progressed I was making a list of OTHER improvements I want Handyman Matters to work on in the future :o). I have complete confidence in this company and contractors which in todays market is a real find!
Description of Work: EXCELLENT without question! I had given up on doing some overdue remodeling to my 1969 home, but Handyman Matters was the answer. I told them what I needed done, work was scheduled within a week and the quality is excellent. Keith the contractor was on time, worked diligently, clean-up each day and met every challenge. And the price was well within my budget. I will exclusively use Handyman Matters for all my jobs in the future. Reliable, professional and have won my business and confidence.

Working with Handyman Matters was a wonderful experience, from the quote I got on the phone to the actual work itself. I was able to get an appointment for the work within the time frame I needed, the workman, Mike, showed up on time and took care of the job quickly and efficiently. He was able to adjust how the shutters were attached to match the previous shutters and they look fantastic! Mike was friendly and very competent and I will definitely ask for him by name again.
Description of Work: Needed two shutters hung over 3rd floor bathroom window on brick townhome.

Everything went fine with them. They were very friendly and responsive over the phone. I thought there prices were fair but I just didn’t not to get the work done.
Description of Work: They gave me a quote over the phone for some work.
All workers were respectful, prompt, and professional. Tracy, David and the crew were very communicative with questions and I appreciated their input. They added extra crew members in order to get the job done in time for my move-in date. I could never have accomplished this with individual contractors. I would gladly hire them again, and am very pleased with the quality of their work. I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I moved into a home needing much interior TLC in a very short time after decades of neglect. Handyman Matters refinished my wood floors; repaired plaster cracks & holes; painted the entire upstairs and wood-paneled basement, updated electric as needed; added and changed electric outlets, light fixtures & vents; replaced bathroom sink & fixtures; replaced locks; replaced rotted wood trim in bathroom with non-wood trim; replaced shoe molding in upper level, and baseboard in basement (mold damaged).

They did a great job. They showed up when they said they would. They did a great job and I thought at a reasonable price. I was very happy with them.
Description of Work: We had them replace and paint exterior trim that had rotted. They also fixed the damage caused buy birds nesting in the exhaust vents. They had to cut out part of the ceiling in one of the bathrooms replace the exhaust fan and venting. They also put guards over the exterior covers to keep the problem from happening again.

They had originally worked on it a few years ago. They did a good neat job. There are no problems so far. They give a one year warranty. They gave a time and date. The guy was here right on time. He did what he had to do. It's all taken care of.
Description of Work: Handyman Matters re-caulked a bathtub. I also wanted them to double check the grouting just to make sure everything was okay.

The initial call to Handyman Matters was answered promptly. The manager provided an estimate over the phone after hearing what the problem was. The company was aware of the materials needed (drywall, drywall tape, and, mud) to complete the job. The worker showed up late requiring a call to the company office as to his punctuality. When I asked the worker if he had all the materials with him to perform the work, he did not and went to Home Depot for other materials such as shoe covers. He could have been more prepared. The initial repair was completed on time. We added work for him to do the priming and painting the drywall repair and small painting tasks. The initial repair was not perfect with some contraction and bubbling of the space between the original dry wall and the repair. This was caused by using quick-drying mud and the cold temperatures in the attic. The worker was very conscientious, returning twice to ensure that we were completely satisfied with the job. The area was finished using regular mud, sanded, and repainted (we supplied the paint to prevent being charged for the trip). The damage was no longer visible. We were satisfied with the work done an would use them again for the performable of a similar task.
Description of Work: The task was to repair a hole in the drywall ceiling in the foyer of our home. The hole was in a slightly difficult position, about 3 feet from the nearest wall in a two story foyer. The hole was large (about 2x2.5 ft).

I received a phone call from the electrician the night before at 10 PM. He stated that he wanted to sleep in and would be at my house between 9 and 930 AM instead of 8AM. After a few phone calls, the electrician showed up at 1:30 PM. He did not have the tools needed to complete the job. He used foul language and complained throughout the job. At one point, I found him in the garage taking a break, leaning on a table. He did not listen to me as I explained what I wanted. After about 45 minutes into the job I discovered he was under the influence of prescription narcotics. The electrician was not able to complete the job; he only installed one outlet which took over an hour. The work he performed was very unprofessional. Markings from the drill are visible on my drywall. As he was drilling for the new outlet, he drilled through the outlet on the other side of the wall and damaged it. Then, he replaced that outlet with a spare he had. At the same time he shocked himself and tripped the breaker in the basement. As he was leaving he told me that he would tell his boss that the customer (me) wanted to reschedule, otherwise his boss would "cry" to him. I did not disagree because I was fearful of him as he was high on prescription drugs. I waited 4 hours for the electrician to show up and it took him 1 hour to do a 15-20 minute task. I wasted the majority of my Saturday and the work I wanted completed was not done.
Description of Work: I called to have the following done; install wall TV mount, in wall speaker wiring and two new outlets (one surge outlet for TV and one for receiver).

Response from Handyman Matters Of Frederick
As the owner of the company I am shocked and appalled at what happened at the member's home. I let this employee go immediately on Monday 10-26-09. I contacted the member and let him know that if there was anything I could do I would be happy to do it. We have been doing work for Angie's list customers for 5 years and have maintained an A rating, as well as a 2008 customer service award. We would like to assure all Angie's list customers that this is never tolerated in our company. This is the first time we have had an issue like this and we have done thousands of jobs for our customers. We work extremely hard to hire and keep the best craftspeople we can find. Please accept our apology again.
It went very well. When Ed came to estimate the job, he gave us a list of the items we needed. We purchased them. He came back the following week and did the work. The hallway looks very nice. We are pleased with the quality of the work.
Description of Work: Installed Pergo Flooring in hallway. Attached baseboards around perimeter. Made and placed two thresholds. Made and attached frame for window.

It went very well. My husband was at home while the work was being done, and he was very pleased with the work that was done.
Description of Work: We had a doorframe repaired. The original doorframe was narrower than the width of the wall next to it after new sheetrock was put on the wall. The original contractor tacked on a doorframe which came loose and eventually just fell off. The Handyman Matters carpenter (Rob) improved the original frame with wood he milled so the the fit would be correct. The outer frame fits beautifully now.

The stairs and the closets turned out great with no complaints. Initially I had issues with the repairs to the rental home. The work done was of poor quality. I called Ed, the owner, and he IMMEDIATELY responded to my concerns. He bent over backwards to correct the problems and fix everything to MY satisfaction. He never once made an excuse or challenged my issues. The customer service was absolutely outstanding, rare to find these days. Although we had issues with the repairs the problems were corrected and we gave them a second chance to do some more work, which was great. They have always been very prompt and got most of our work done the day it was requested.
Description of Work: I have hired them three times; once to build a set of deck stairs (~$300), another to do general repairs of a rental home that included patching and painting walls, re-caulk the shower, fix drywall, and a variety of other odds and ends ($1000) and once more to paint closets and put up closet fixtures (~$550).

One worker in particular, was very precise and detailed. So much so, that it turns out the trim that I had gotten was the right style but the part that went next to the door was an 1/8th inch less thick than it should have been. I doubt if I would have noticed but he wanted me to know so that I could get the other one if I wanted to (which I did). One of the things that I liked was they allowed me to buy the things I needed for the job from a hardware store myself so that I could save the mark-up. For a little more money they also cut a hole in my garage wall and trimmed it out, so that I could install my air conditioner. They really are good and I would highly recommend them. And when I say that, you can believe it!
Description of Work: I needed to install a pull down staircase in my hall so I could get to my attic easier. My main problem is that I am almost too particular. I just didn't want anyone cutting a hole in my ceiling. I wanted to get someone that was as particular as I am, if that's possible! So I went to Angie's List for a carpenter, like I did for a body shop a couple of months ago to have my 2008 Tundra (that someone plowed into) fixed. The body shop did such a terrific job that when they were through you couldn't tell that anything had ever happened. On Angie's List, I found Handyman Matters. And I'm so glad that I did because they did a fantastic job!
I called Handyman Matters with my list of tasks, and the person who took my call was friendly yet professional. He explained up front that they charge for time plus materials, and he made sure to explain that if the staff went to buy materials, they would still be on the clock. They were able to make an appointment the following day. Daniel called later that evening to confirm the appointment, then called again the next morning to let me know he was on his way. He actually arrived early! He made sure to explain the pricing again before he got started on the work. When he had to buy materials, he called to let me know how much the materials would be before he bought them. He had to wait until the following day to finish the job, but he explained why he had to come back(the plaster had to dry before he sanded and painted). Daniel made sure to clean the work area each time before he left. I changed my mind twice about repairing the wood over the window, and both Daniel and the person who took my call were patient with me. Overall, this was the best experience I've had with a contractor since we've been in this house.
Description of Work: They caulked my shower, created a plumbing access to one of the bathrooms, repaired the front door sill, repaired a hole in the ceiling drywall, and repaired the carpentry on one of the exterior windows.

Other than the poor work down, the rest of the experience was fine.
Description of Work: Used this company 3 years ago for some floor work. I had them install some Luan underlayment. I first asked the company to ensure that the handyman knew what he was doing. He said that he would. The installer did not use any adhesive, or nearly enough staples to tack down the luan. Now I have multiple areas that are popping up. It will be a costly repair.

He got there right on time. He was pleasant and friendly to work with, and very focused. Gave insights into different ways to do the work, and suggested one option that saved me some money. The only concern I had was that on the phone, the estimate was that the work should take 2 hours, and it ended up taking 3(I thought 2 was optimistic).
Description of Work: He did an assortment of things. Installed a towel rack and shower rod, caulked 2 tubs and 3 toilets, and fixed some electrical outlets that weren't working.
They sent out the same person each time, and this was helpful because he gets to know you and your house and what you want done. They charge by the hour so they came by to give me an estimate as to how much everything would cost. I will definitely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: They stained my deck and power washed the house. They fixed a leak over my garage and repaired a ceramic soap dish in the bathroom. They also wired an outlet inside my home.

The office receptionist was friendly and helpful. She clearly explained the charges and made an appointment for a few days after my call. At first Jason was due at 8:00 am Friday morning, but due to rain we rescheduled for 10:00. Jason called at 11:00 to ask directions to my house. His map quest misdirected him. Since he was very near my house I expected him soon after our phone call. He arrived an hour later. He worked for three hours and left intending to return on Monday to finish the job. Monday the office left a message on my phone that he would be late, but he never showed at all. He was due at 8:00 am Thursday morning, but had not arrived by 9:00 when I left for work. The job was finished when I returned home. The house looked well done, but I'm not sure he caulked around the windows. He bent the frame slightly to remove the siding. I wish I had an opportunity to speak to him before or after the job.
Description of Work: Jason replaced the termite damaged wood siding on the back of my house and painted the new siding.

Marty did a very thorough caulking job and so far we have not had further water leakage. I have some experience in caulking, and you can definitely tell when a novice has done the work. Marty's work was quite professional and much better than I would have been able to do. Two of the windows were up high and required a tall ladder. The gaps were big and he had to use a LOT of caulk. Marty was friendly and courteous and helpful. He seemed to have a good amount of experience and knowledge in home construction/repair by the way he spoke. Their only faux pas was that I scheduled the appointment for 1 pm and Marty showed up at my house at 8 am. He apologized and very willingly left and came back at the correct time.
Description of Work: We had some water leaking into our kitchen ceiling during rainstorms and we suspected that the windows were not sealed up properly. Marty came out to caulk around the exterior of 3 windows on our home.
