Their prices are reasonable. They come out and gave me a free estimate. I put half down and then pay the other half when they complete the job. We have never had to call them to come and redo something. It has been good service.

Don't use them for sod.
Description of Work: Denison installed sod for my new construction house through Mid-Atlantic builders. The installation is very poor. The ground was not leveled or raked prior to installation so the sod lays very unevenly over the ground to the extent one can not run or walk rapidly over the ground without fear of injuries. There are significant gaps between the pieces of sod - many 2-4 inches apart when they should abutt tight. When questioned they had an opportunity to correct the issues but they stood behind the shoddy work. Denison did a very substandard job and we have other landscapers who will attest to that fact. I will post pictures and would advise that one use someone else for sod installations.

Vince Pollino did a good job showing me various options for the patio. I was originally thinking about getting flagstone, but opted for the Belgard pavers instead, because they looked so nice and I could get a much larger patio for my budget with pavers. Vince was very patient as I looked at numerous options for flower bed edging along the patio, then finally decided to go without it entirely. The job itself went well. Workers were organized and worked quickly and professionally. The excavation and forklift equipment ripped up the front yard, which needed to be re-seeded, but this was unavoidable. I needed to re-seed one more time after the re-seeding done by Denison, but the grass grew back a little bit more thickly this spring. The patio was laid very well, taking into account the backyard, which slopes down to the patio, and the related drainage needs. Water drains away from the house, which was my main concern. There is one low area in the patio (in the paver circle area) where water pools, rather than draining off. The polymeric sand in this area (between pavers) cracked this fall. The price was on the high end, and I might get more quotes were I were to do it again. Nevertheless, the patio turned out very, very well and I'm happy with it! I may contact the company to see what can be done about the appearance of cracks between the pavers in the area that isn't draining well - this is really the only problem.
Description of Work: Denison Landscaping installed a 500+ sq ft Belgard Dublin paver patio in my back and side yard, including a paver circle set into the patio. The job required significant excavation, hauling of excess dirt and debris, repair of a small section of french drain that was damaged in the excavation, and reseeding of the front yard. The job took 4-5 days.

Denison would never call me back. I even went up to the landscape company and again filled out a form to have someone come by or call me with an estimate.....but it didn't happen. I left a message three times and filled out a customer form twice. Maybe I should fly around the company with a sign to get them to respond back or even acknowledge my request.

I emailed to solicit a quote. James Denison emailed me back within a day and come out to visit the property within another two days. He then delivered his proposal within two days and then modified per my request(s). He and his team then arrived at the designated hour on the designated day, and completed the job as promised - by the end of the second day.
Description of Work: Denison's home landscaping team re-did both the front and back yards of our Capitol Hill DC rowhouse, including the installation of pavers and a patio, as well as a beautiful assortment of plants, flowers, and trees.

Denison Landscaping showed up when they said they would and had completed the work on time. The quality of work was of the highest caliber. I was so impressed I had them come back to do more work and will continue to use them in the future. Definitely the most professional company in the area.
Description of Work: I first had Denison Landscaping fill in a pool, grade the surrounding area and sod. Next they put a box drain in a low laying area of the yard, cleared and graded about ½ acre of wooded area, laid more sod and installed a red cedar privacy fence. I also use them for my regular lawn maintenance.

They were completely unresponsive. They would set a date to come, and they wouldn't show up. They would say "sorry, we got caught up on another job." You never get a live person when you call. You always get an answering machine, and they never return your calls. When they do the work correctly, it is beautiful. But, if you have a problem it is like pulling teeth to get them to come and fix it.

They did a really good job on the hardscaping; we were really happy with it. Their design work was pretty good but the follow up at the end got a little hit or miss but I think they are family owned and the owner was on vacation so things sort of fell through the cracks a little. I am a little understanding of that but at the same time you are a customer and you want things finished perfect. We had a couple of plants die and they replaced them once but they died again. Overall we were happy with the work and the design they did and I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Denison Landscaping & Nursery to do a bunch of hardscaping and did some yard reseeding.
Our contact person was Angie had lots of good ideas. She listened to me. She seemed to understand what I wanted. She made some good suggestions and gave some good ideas. The crew was fabulous. They worked very hard when there were heat waves. It was a large crew and they were well supervised. They showed up on time and just worked. We were not subjected to any kind of unprofessionalism from the employees. They were there just to do the work and were very professional. The quality of work was quite good. Everything looked great. We were very happy with what they did. I would recommend them to others. They are expensive, but were worth the money.
Description of Work: We used Denison Landscaping & Nursery Inc in June to put in a patio. They weeded, edged, and mulched much of our garden bed. They also did some landscaping. They rearranged the materials we had for general effect.

The front shrubbery of a 30yr-old family home had been doing poorly for some time due to shade by trees and had recently been severely damaged by snow. A new from-scratch landscape design was desired. Denison Landscaping Inc. was associated with a nursery/store that was only 10 minutes away and had advertised ?free estimates? for landscaping which would include a professional design. After I called, they explained the proposed design would be explained verbally with the written estimate. I said that I wished to purchase a stand-alone professional design, to show to other family members, etc before committing to any work; they said I should speak to the designer about that. A week later, Mr. Vincent Pollino called me. He said that he was a recent (2 weeks) graduate of the Landscape Design department at Penn State, and that he could easily suggest plants that would be compatible with the trees in the yard. He reiterated that he would provide a free proposed design, and an estimate of the material and labor to implement it. I mentioned that the office had mentioned that their free designs were not written, and asked him to find out his hourly rate for a written design separate from the estimate.. When I spoke to him a few weeks later (when I was available again) he said he had checked with his boss and that the hourly rate would be $85. At the same time, I received a much lower quotation from a non-degreed professional landscaper with a different company. Given Denison?s overhead etc, that seemed reasonable for a graduate from an established firm. On the appointed day, he arrived promptly, looked at the area, asked some questions, and in 20 minutes he had a legal-pad sketch of the plants he thought were appropriate for the setting. He spent another 10 minutes explaining his drawing, and offered to leave it as a sketch, or to use a CAD program at his office that would take ?only a few minutes? to produce a computer-printed drawing with standard descriptive information about the plants recommended. At that time I was undecided whether that additional time was required since the sketch seemed adequate. But after checking with other family members, I called and told him to go ahead and print the CAD drawing. When he contacted me next, he said the drawing was finished, but that he couldn?t give it to me until I paid an invoice which I would receive in the mail, and he couldn?t fax or email the invoice or take a credit card number himself or at the store. More than a week later I received the invoice- for $300 (3.5 hours)! After writing to the company and emailing him, they refused to reply and he refuses to explain the amount or say whether he spent 3 additional hours doing something or whether he did not disclose a minimum billing policy. I also did not receive the free estimate! After requesting ?dispute resolution? from Angie?s List, I did receive a call from Duane Denison. He apologized for choosing to not respond to my letter, said that Mr. Pollino did tell him (or at least the company billing system) that he spent another 3 hours printing my design, and accepted my offer of payment for one hour at the agreed rate. He offered no explanation for the prior billing requirements. Looking at the drawing, it does not reflect 3 hours work unless it was by a first-time user without standard figures. Assuming templates for the title block and the 6 different ?shrub? figures, it would indeed only have taken ?a few minutes? in a simple CAD program. The actual information was also skimpy, using some common names that did not identify species, let alone varieties or colors, and some misspellings. If that was because economical choice of varieties depended on their availability, the drawing or report should have included should have included an artistic or design statement for the selection of varieties and colors. In any case because of the delay, the design was not used and I would be hesitant to recommend them for future design work until their billing practices are corrected. Since Duane Denison personally affirmed the correctness of the $300 billing for the 1/2 hour consultation, I would have to rate their price as Bad; a simple landscape design shouldn?t be that high. The Quality would have to be rated only Fair, as any original artistic or horticultural excellence expressed initially was lost on the drawing. Likewise, Professionalism would have to be only Fair, as the initially excellent professional approach was ruined by subsequent actions.

Two gripes: Overall the work was good, but my two concerns are they used standard 4" (deep) sprinklers instead of 6" (deep) sprinklers and the locations of the heads did not provide uniform coverage to my sidewalk grass strip. My 4" sprinklers sometimes become partially obstructed between mowings (my grass is 3" high and the sprinkler nozzle is 3" from the ground). Because 6" sprinklers are only ~$5 more, these should be standard if a home owner cuts grass on higher lawn mower settings. Supposedly by law Denison does not put sprinklers in the sidewalk grass strip and instead allows rotor sprinklers to spray across the sidewalk (which is fine for 4am watering). Because the sprinkler heads near the sidewalk have almost 360 coverage to spray the grass strip, other sprinklers that only cover 45-180 degrees need to have their flow rates lowered. Fortunately, Denison installs flow-adjustable sprinklers (Hunter I-20). The complete story: Chris did a great job giving an estimate and explaining the work process. He was responsive to my calls and questions and was always on-time. He also handled well the pre-work (getting UtilityQuest to mark the utility lines, getting the plumber to come out and set up the submeter and backflow preventer). On the day of installation, Chris and the crew showed up on time and began working immediately. By 5pm, the crew had finished all the connections and tested the system and Chris came back to show me the basics of working the controller. Perhaps to achieve more uniform coverage (for an extra charge), a separate zone of fixed sprayers could have been used in the front yard to spray across the sidewalk to water the grass strip. Also, perhaps for an extra charge, 6" sprinklers could have been used. I would have preferred if Chris identified potential problems and gave me more installation options. Chris volunteered to come back to adjust the sprinklers if needed, but I bought an adjustment key and made adjustments myself. Other than those two gripes, I am satisfied with the work and I will hire them again to do the back yard. I like that Denison is a local company and did the work on the model homes in my new home community.
Description of Work: Installed sprinkler system in front and side yards (3 zones, ~5 heads per zone) including Hunter controller, valves, rain gauge and sprinklers. Subcontracted submeter and backflow preventer (for ~ $1350).

We've been less successful trying to arrange yard landscaping through Denison. We've tried three times to get them to give us estimates for a potentially substantial overall landscaping. Once we visited their nursery, where we spent awhile finding someone to help us (by giving us a phone number to call later; no one at the nursery on a Saturday seemed to know about landscaping, which seems odd but never mind). I called Denison twice during the next week and left messages, but never heard back. A month later I tried again, and arranged for an estimator to come to our home (we live 10 minutes from the nursery). He showed up and was very nice, said all great stuff, spent an hour with us taking notes, said he'd contact us with estimates for what we had talked about--and we never heard from him again. So we've changed out mind about committing landscaping money to this company, given how hard it is to get their attention. So bottom line is that we do recommend their routine yard maintenance, but don't recommend trying to deal with their landscaping department...seems to be two different crews!
Description of Work: We usually have Denison mow our 1/2-acre lot (front and back yard) for $82. They show up with a crew, and do very good work. Each year we also have them clean up and remove a year's worth of leaves and fallen branches (we have a lot of leafy trees, so it gets pretty deep) for $240. We're happy with their work in this area, and do recommend them for these maintenance services.

They did an excellent job and we were very pleased. They landscaped the areas that I wanted. They had to dig and get it ready for planting. We had 6 different areas that they worked in. I thought it was kind of pricey. I chose them because I know other people who live in the area that have used them and thought they were thorough and priced fairly. If you have any problems you just call them and they are very responsive. When he said they would come out they came right out. The only problem I had with them is that once we got the proposal and gave them the work he really couldn't give me a time that they would be starting on the project. Then he eventually called to give me a time that they would come out. He said they were backed up because of all the rain.
Description of Work: Denison Landscaping & Nursery came out and did some landscaping for us. They have been in the area for a long time.
