Not so well. Undependable
Description of Work: After the unusual heavy rains in the month of May,our basement flooded. I had no clue as to the origin of the leak. I didn't know who to call or how to find the source of the leak. I needed the leak repaired. <

It was great.
Description of Work: They spent almost 3 hours providing the mapping. He had the computer and designed the whole basement space for me, I was actually quite pleased.

We had major leaks/water penetration on the roofs of our front bay windows from Hurricane Sandy that damaged walls, insulation and carpeting inside. Mr Wiggs arrived the day after I emailed him to assess the damage and work up an estimate for the insurance company. The quote was detailed and reasonable. He was also quite agreeable to adjusting the quote based on work I completed myself waiting for the insurance to approve the claim. Because of the number of people filing insurance claims it took over a week for the insurance company to process and approve the claim. The drywall, insulation and carpeting had already been taken out by a water remediation company and with the weather getting colder it was quite cold in the house. So I purchased and installed new insulation and some of the dry wall myself. He simply deducted the amount for the materials and work I had done from the final cost. As for quality, he inspects the final work and is very particular about the quality. After the workman "finished" the job he came by to followup and inspect the work. I had a few small concerns but he went even farther nitpicking various aspects of the work that had been done. I was planning on just doing the minor touch up work but he insisted that it was up to his company to do the job right. He scheduled for one of his senior crew to come out a few days later and fix the work including redoing some of the spackling as well as repainting including the edging in parts of the room that were undamage so the lines were pristine. (I take no offense to them redoing my poor edging :-) ). That follow-up work took the quality from a B+ to an A+. What speaks even more volumes about Mr Wiggs care for the work his company does is that I had already given the check for the remaining balance before he had the touch of work done. He could have just cashed it and been done, but he obviously takes pride in the work his company does. This repair work was unexpected, but we have a few other projects we are planning to do in our house and I will definitely be contacting City Renovations and Remodeling again.
Description of Work: Replaced Drywall, molding and carpeting. Spackle and painting. Repaired bay window roof flashing and caulking.

We moved a few months ago to this house, and the chandelier in the dining room stopped working. It was not the bulb that I changed. I suspected some disconnected wires. We have a few electrical problems in the house, and my husband is not good with electrical stuff. Anyway, I decided to test the waters by buying a big deal with a company, and if I liked them, I would have used them for the remaining electrical stuff which needed to be fixed. I bought a big deal for 2 hours of electrical work for $ 129.00. I printed the coupon, then called the company. The gentleman who answered told me he was busy, but to send him an email with all the details about what needed to be done as well as my address, and he will call me the same day in the evening. He asked me if he could call around 9:00 pm, and I said it was ok. That night, he never called. The next day, he never called, the third day, I forwarded back to him the first email asking him if he had received it, and telling me that I would like to hear from him since I mentioned in the only phone call we had, that I would really liked to have the chandelier fixed for Thanksgiving. No answer. The fourth day, I called him in the morning, he told me he was busy, and that he will call me back within an hour. Yes, you guessed right, he never did. The next day, on Friday, I called Angie's List to see what I can do. They told me that someone will contact me after the weekend. I was really getting frustrated. On Monday morning, I called back the company - it's a cellular phone - and he never answered and it went on his answering machine. So a few minutes later, I called back from another phone (my husband's cell) - he did not know the number - and this time he answered. I told him I wanted a refund that I was sick and tired of playing hide and seek with him. I told him that maybe too many people bought those deals and he can't please everyone at the same time. I can understand that, but do not play dead, tell me the truth. He promised me someone to come the next day at 8:30 am. He did, and he was really a nice guy. He checked the wires atthe ceiling outlet box as well as the light switch, and it was normal. So, he told me that my chandelier was defectuous, like he wanted to just leave. I told him that I suspected wires being lose in it. I had to help him to remove the little white ceramic lamp base. He told me I was really smart in electricity, and that comment just scared the h*** out of me. No electrician should find me smart in electricity. What I was saying was the ABC that I learned in middle school! At that point, the only thing I wanted was my chandelier fixed and that he just got out. I was planning to ask him to take a look at my stove since I had some electrical issues with it, but If figured that if he had some problems with diagnosing lose wires in a chandelier, I certainly did not want him to touch my stove. So, he did it in an hour, even though I had paid for two hours, I decided just to let it go, and did not want him to touch anything else in the house. I feel bad writing this because he was really a nice guy, but I have my doubts about his electrical skills. His boss called me to see if I were happy, and yes, not happy but relieved the chandelier was working. Three days later, the boss called me in the evening to ask me about my email address because he needed to be paid byt Angie's List. I then received an invoice for $ 129.00, and disgarded it since I had already paid through Angie's list. In the overall, that experience was stressful but a good move in a way because it's better to start with a little thing to fix and see how it works ot before using them for bigger issues. Just a very frustrating experience.
Description of Work: My chandelier was not working. I suspected lose wires. I had installed a ladder in the dining room, which was a good move since the electrician who arrived on time was without any.He checked out the ceiling outlet box, and then the light switch. Then, he looked at me, and said "Sorry but it's your chandelier which is defectuous", like he was ready to leave. I told him that I suspected that, and that I wanted him to disassemble the chandelier to check the wires inside the ceramic base. Once the ceramic base was out, he looked at it, and said that it could not work because there was only one screw??? I said yes, you have to unscrew it to reach the wires inside. That's when he told me I was really smart in electricity (see below!), which scared the h*** out of me! No electrician should tell me that! So he unscrewed the screw, and yes the wires were not connected anymore, he reconnected them, and put back everything together. He had to change something in the light switch, and it worked. It took an hour for him to do that. I had paid for two hours of electrical labor, but decided to call it a quit. I was not impressed with his electrical skills and did not want him to check out my stove where I had some issues. I feel bad writing this because he was a nice guy. Not sure he was a licensed electrician with the comments he made, but a really nice guy otherwise. He offered to sweep the floor, but I declined and let him go.

UPDATE Because I had additional dealings with Mr. Wiggs that strengthened my first beliefs and his response is misleading (I didn't read his response until 4 Dec which was extremely interesting since he said he didn't want my job but he called me to convince me to use him) I had to update my write up. 1. There was no appointment so I have no idea as to what Mr. Wiggs is referring to with respect to being late. Mr. Wiggs called me early one evening as I was leaving work...after I left two messages over 1.5 week period. He went into this long explanation as to why they didn't return my calls so I said sounds like you're busy so no worries I'll find another company and we hung up. Mr. Wiggs called me right back and asked if he could stop by that evening since he lived near by and he was on his way home. I got home around 8:20pm and Mr. Wiggs showed up about 5 mins later. 2. Mr. Wiggs failed to mention the voicemail messages that took place around the emails. I sent the emails AFTER the voicemail messages were not returned. 3. When Mr. Wiggs called me 23 Nov, I was in utter shock when he told me it was my fault he didn't get back to me cause I called the 800 number on the business card he gave me and not a 301 number he never mentioned should be the primary. I don't see how I was rude because I barely spoke other to say I left a message on the number you gave me..which the greeting said it was the company. I went on to say let's end this phone call right now and MAYBE talk later, have a good day. I was actually trying to be nice and had no intention of dealing with Mr. Wiggs again. Then I received that bizarro email and was like good grief, I'm leaving feedback. 4. Mr. Wiggs called me after I left the first posting, 23 Nov, and he left his response, 24 Nov, to say he wanted to do my job for about half of the original estimate. I was EXTREMELY hesitant and articulated this to him. He promised it would be better so I said fine...but kept the estimate appointments with other contractors just in case. 5. What followed was more of what was first experienced but with more craziness. Mr. Wiggs didn't return my voicemails/emails, said he didn't receive them which was extremely odd. When he did communicate, it was confusing questions/info which leads me to not only believe Mr. WIggs has a problem with communication and taking responsibility for failed actions, but either he continuously confused my job with another's or he's not very organized and forgot details of my job/discussions. 6. On 5 Dec, after receiving an emailing asking me if I forgot about a schedule that he never provided (and was totally confusing based on what he had previously sent and I respond to via email and voicemail), I told Mr. Wiggs I wouldn't be using his company. I received two estimates that was not far off his special price and didn't include the 6% office expense that Mr. Wiggs charges so I would rather pay more money than deal with Mr. Wiggs and his company. Lastly Mr. Wiggs would like to make me out to be a difficult customer. To that I say if expecting the contractor to be competent or at the very least responsible for their issues, then yep, color me difficult. But in the end it all worked out...Mr Wiggs will go his way and I'll go mine.

Response from City Renovations & Remodeling LLC
Everything she said is true to the following points. Its true that I was late to her appointment because I was with another customer and didn't want to cut off the visit. I explained that to her when I arrived. Its true that we didn't respond to the email that she sent on November 17th because we were very busy making sure that all of the other customers with open projects were taken care of before Thanksgiving. For the record, she received her estimate on November 5th, responded on November 17th, I called her on November 23rd, after Thanksgiving. When I called her on Friday after Thanksgiving first with Seasons Greetings to try to schedule her project, she was not at all friendly. I tried to explain and she simply became more agitated and rude. The call was ended on a bad note. I sat in my office and thought about the whole customer relationship. I sent an email accounting the situation as it occurred and recommended she select another contractor to complete her project. I didn't feel good about working with this customer. Don't get me wrong, we have challenging customers but this was different from the first call and visit. Each customer is entitled to their opinion and I can respect that. however when it borders character assassination, there should be limitations. We never did any work for this customer so she does not have a true picture of our organization and our customer relations. I regret we could not show this customer our hospitality and workmanship. I can only hope her project is completed to her satisfaction. You have a beautiful home and I'm sure my call was at a bad moment. Timing is everything. I always seek middle ground with all of my customers. I truly believe we would have exceeded your expectations if given the opportunity.

I first sent Mike pictures of a repaired faucet basement sink that had been done poorly first to see if he could fix a bad repair from a handyman who jerryrigged a dripping faucet. Although it was the end of the day Mike spent a lot of time with me on the phone and had his plumber look at the pictures too. He offered to send the plumber the next day. I arranged for the following day and Mike showed up to repair it because his plumber had called out and Mike didn't want to cancel so he showed up himself. He did a beautiful job. He went to Home Depot several times to pick up parts and now it is a beautifully working faucet. After he finished, he suggested I recycle one of the old faucet pieces to put on my outside faucets so I could use 2 hoses instead on one, and he disassembled the old faucet piece that the former repairman had used and affixed one to the front and one to the back house outside faucets so now I can use 2 hoses in each faucet. He also showed me how to winterize my outside faucets. I have a dog who insisted on getting his attention and Mike was very relaxed and didn't mind. I did think the job was expensive but I appreciated that Mike worked with me on his best price and did the outside faucet changes and the lesson in winterizing for no charge. I would certainly use him again.

Mr. Wiggs (Mike) and crew of two arrived at the appointment time, while I was 20 mins late due to traffic. While I was en route, they called to ask if they could get started on removing the storm door. All three men took precisely two hours (total of 6 man hours). They cleaned up after themselves and reviewed each task with me upon completion. I was pleased with the work and their professionalism. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I contacted Mike before buying the Handyman Big Deal to inquire if the four items I needed, could be accomplished in six hours with one worker. [The tasks included: removing an old storm door; replacing an entry door lock set; installing new shoe mold around living area; and replace a garbage disposal.] He confirmed this was possible and even offered to purchase some of the items but I'd already purchased them.

They repaired a burnout electrical outlet. They then reattached a light switch for me. They were very quick to respond and very professional. They were honest with the diagnosis of the problems and let me know up front that it could cost more money. I called them in the morning and they were here later that day. It did not cost me any additional money for the work completed. I was very pleased with their workmanship. I would definitely use them again in the future.

Mike was responsive and helpful throughout the process. (He responded to my request for an estimate within a few hours!) The estimate was fair and in line with other estimates I received. We were able to schedule an appointment for the work (and then reschedule when an unexpected meeting popped up at my job) without a hitch. Then, he even called me last night to confirm our appointment for this morning. Eric, the worker who installed the molding, arrived on time this morning and was ready to work. Mike checked in shortly after Eric arrived and then came back in at the end of the job to make sure everything was perfect. And it was. Our house looks so much better - the molding appears seamless. We could not be more pleased. Every step of this (very short) process has been easy and pleasant. They also made sure I knew that their work is warrantied. Mike assured me that if we discovered any issues later, they would be happy to come back and fix it. They're going to give me an estimate on some other work for the future :)

Mike answered my phone call on the first ring and met me at our house the same day. He provided us with a detailed estimate, which he then turned into a comprehensive contract. Mike and his team completed the project on time and on budget, and throughout the two-week project he remained in constant communication with us. Mike showed a great attention to detail, resolving problems that we had not anticipated with no added cost. We could not be happier with the final product and would highly recommend City Renovations and Remodeling to others.

It was FABULOUS! Mike was friendly and easy to schedule with. He paid intricate attention to things I'd never have noticed - and when I'd say "don't worry about it, I'll never notice it!" he refused to accept anything less than perfect accuracy. Furthermore, since it took a few days to lock down an appointment (and since the service took him about 20 minutes, total) he comped the service for me! It's always a relief to know you're working with someone who puts a lot of value in doing good, fair work. He was a pleasure to work with, and I would absolutely call him again for future projects or recommend him to my friends.

The overall experience of working with City Renovations and Remodeling was fantastic. They are truly one of the best contractors that we have worked with in the metro area. They were very thorough in their work. They went above and beyond the call of duty to rework a nearby wall at no additional cost. They cleaned up very extensively after completing their work.
Description of Work: We were renovating our kitchen and wanted to remove the load bearing wall between our kitchen and dining room to provide more space in our kitchen. Mike came out the day I called to provide an estimate on removing our wall and installing a support beam in its place. During the process, Mike provided excellent explanations of the different components of removing the existing wall and installing support beam. He spent a great deal of time ensuring that we understand everything, which was appreciated since we are first-time home owners. He seemed to really understand the historic nature of houses in the DC area. Since the wall was load bearing, we had City Renovations and Remodeling remove the existing wall and install a support beam. They were able to remove the old wall and install the support beam in the course of a few hours.

I originally hired a companynto install two air conditioning units in my condo. They installed one and never returned to install the other. I called Mike with City to have the other air condoning unit installed. Mike said he could go by the condo within a few hours to look at the problem. I am located in Los Angeles and the condo is in DC....however, Mike was very accommodating with the unusual circumstance in needing to go through the building manager to gain access and specific materials. He was able to come back two days later to install. I had called numerous companies who were not able to come for a week. Mike was professional, prompt and matched a competitor's price! I will definitely use City again.

The work began on Monday, June 11, 2012 and the owner and crew member were on time and worked very hard throughout the week. They are professional and worked quickly. After only 3 days the end result of the work done outside the house is amazing!. We are looking forward to the completion of the job in a timely and cost-effective manner. The owner oversees every aspect of the work and ensures great customer service and a job well-done. The experience has been a very good one so far. The work ended on Thursday, July 12, 2012. It didn't end sooner because we had to await shipment on certain laminate supplies and the storm door. Once the supplies were received City Renovations went to work the very next day! The flooring was done by the owner of the company, Michael Wiggs, and it is beautiful. The company replaced the door frame, installed a new front door and storm door as well as the PVC trimming they installed around the windows and roof of the house. We now have the best looking house on our block! City Renovations and Remodeling were able to handle any and every situation that arose with the work on the house and their expertise and great customer service make them an excellent choice for any work you need done on your home.
Description of Work: City Renovations & Remodeling replaced all the damaged woodwork around the windows of our three story town home with PVC and repaired the door frame and installed a new front door. They will also install a storm door and install laminate in our living room and front room landing. They will paint the PVC trimming. The carpeting in the living room will be removed and replaced with laminate flooring. The carpet on the landing leading up to the stairs will be replaced with laminate as well.

Mike Wiggs answered his phone right away and was able to come over within an hour of my first call. I wanted to use a local business and was happy to have found his company on Angie's List. At our first walk through I was impressed by his general knowledge and by his practicality of his approach. Mr. Wiggs is both affable and extremely competent and I felt that these projects would be in good hands. The different professionals who came to perform the various tasks- electrical, carpentry and plumbing- were all excellent. All areas were thoroughly cleaned after each day's efforts and I was asked to inspect all work as well. In the case of the screens, two small tears were pointed out by Mike and those screens were immediately redone. Overall, I am very happy to have employed City Renovations and Remodeling and will certainly do so in the future. I would not hesitate to recommend their work.

The project is still ongoing. So far Mike has called me every day and stopped by at least every second day to check on progress and keep me apprised of next steps. Importantly, he fights for your interests. Mike suggested some modifications to my original plan which I really appreciated, and he has repeatedly nagged his subs to do the construction according to my wishes, regardless of how much easier it may be to do things a different way. He is also vigilant on keeping things clean at the end of the day. If his subs don't do a satisfactory job cleaning up he fines them! Another important aspect is that Mike doesn't cut corners. He is happy to use stronger (read: more expensive) materials than needed to ensure that there won't be future problems.I've been very pleased with City Renovations so far, and I look forward to hiring them for future work.
Description of Work: I have the sort of house that many contractors walk away from -- plaster walls, no subfloor, etc. I needed a competent contractor to demo an internal wall, to remodel a bathroom, to install flooring, and to repair some previously poorly done remodeling. After interviewing about a dozen contractors I settled on City Renovations because their price estimate was in the middle of the range and I felt that I could trust them to do a good job.

I contacted City Renovations to get an estimate on some home repairs. Mike seemed to know quite a bit bout what needed to be done. He was on time for our meeting and very professional. He returned an estimate to us after the holidays. I replied with a few questions and an adjustment to the list of things we wanted done and haven't heard from him since. I'm not sure if it was the holidays or something else but we went a different way since we didn't hear from him.

Response from City Renovations & Remodeling LLC
I am so sorry for the lack of communication. As I stated when we were together, its best to call me to get a quicker response. We are ready to do your project and get you into your lovely home. Yes the holidays have been stressful along with tax season but there is no reason for us to delay you any longer. Call me and we can set up. Looking forward to making your house a home, Mike 301-254-7467 PS For your patience, we have a gift for you.

City was outstanding and we plan to use them again.
Description of Work: City and its entire team were great from start to finish. Michael came out to the house for an estimate and was extremely thorough. Date was set and met, he and his crew arrived punctually and did a superb job. Opening a wall, repairing an electrical issue, sealing the wall again, and also repairing a back fence. The crew were not only good at their jobs but showed an enormous amount of respect for the house, kept things vacuumed and cleaned as they went. Michael returned that evening to ensure work was done to our (and his) satisfaction and even did some additional finishing work.

I had a punch out list that needed to be performed. Michael Wiggs came out to the property and brought his plumber with him to get the plumbing proble immediately resolved. Michael went over each problem and gave me his recommendations. He also told me that if he touched the roofing problem and there was still a warranty on it, it could void the warranty. His honesty was so refreshing to see. I trust him explicitely and will be calling him in the future. I will also be telling all my friends of his services.

The process so far has been good. I will update when the work is completed. Update: The total time to do all the renovations, etc. including bringing in a tree service subcontractor of my choosing was just over a month. I found Mike Wiggs to be responsive in communication and diligent making sure that things got done on time. Most importantly, Mike and his contractors do good work and were great with working within the budget I had to work with. For example, I had City repair a handrail, but we negotiated to leave the painting out to keep the costs down. I am/was new to working with contractors, so Mike was good enough to explain lots of things. My suggestion to anyone is to not make assumptions, but to talk with your contractor to make sure that you understand what is covered in their estimate and what is extra.
Description of Work: I have been working with City Renovations to obtain estimates to do a wide range of work: roof repair, landscaping, water proofing, electrical repair, a heavy up, and some small carpentry work (e.g., replacing a handrail and a window). Mike Wiggs has shown great flexibility in addressing my cost concerns, timeframe, and issues related to the NACA home buying process. I am hiring City Renovations to do the work I have in mind. Update: So I got a heavy up, roof repair, new grounded electrical outlets, backyard drainage system installed, 8 trees removed, and other miscellaneous repairs.

I had City Renovations & Remodeling do the repairs on my mother house. With her being older and very demanding it was hard us to find a company that would take the time to educate us and show us step by step exactly what would be done. But City Renovations & Remodeling did!!! We had the basement waterproof and a total kitchen and bathroom remodel, along with a new AC installed. Some of the walls upstairs had holes in them so City did the drywall and paint. The paint was a very professional and you could not tell where the repair had taken place in the walls. City's sales rep arrived on time and was very professional and patient with us. I would recommend City Renovations & Remodeling to everyone! If you are looking for a good remodeling or home improvement company City is your company
