The team showed up and very professionally started searching for the issue. It took about 30 minutes but they figured out the issue. A time clock was on a circuit built by a previous owner to control plugs and lights for timed operation. And the time clock was inadvertently turned off. But the completely random inclusion of plugs (some in the circuit and some not in the same room) and ceiling lights we just could not figure out. But the professionals DID figure it out. We engaged the time clock and voila, we had lights and plugs again.
Description of Work: I had a mystery circuit outage but could not find a breaker that was popped. The circuit had an odd assortment of wall plugs and ceiling lights that were "off" - just could not find the problem.

I called Blue Jay Electric on Friday after reviewing them on Angie's List. Keon took my call and was very professional and asked all the right questions about what I needed done. He explained the best and worse case scenarios. He scheduled the job for Monday between 1-2pm. Richie showed up on time, evaluated the situation, explained what most likely would need to be done, laid down a large drop cloth and went to work. A little less than an hour later the job was done. He had to cut a square piece of ceiling out in order to traverse the joist(s), but he put the piece back into place, mud-ready. He hung the light at just the right height, removing excess chain and wire, then covered the old junction box with a vanity plate, and cleaned up the floor. All in all, a very pleasant and professional experience. THANKS RICHIE!

Richie and Tony did a great job installing recessed lighting, and overcoming the challenged posed by our 100 year-old row home. They were clean and neat- very considerate of the space. Richie provided honest advice about the potential challenges of adding recessed lights in our living room, and as a result I am very happy with our decision not to attempt install in the living room. It was refreshing to hear all the information upfront, so I knew the best approach. Richie is very familiarity with row homes, and their crazy nuisances. Richie's expertise prevented us from attempting lighting projects that would have ended up a huge pain and created extra unplanned expense. I highly recommend Blue Jay and Richie, especially for those with city row homes. I will be calling Richie back for more kitchen electrical work in the future.

Requested the service and scheduled a day to initiate the work. The foreman showed up and stated they could not do any work until cleared to do so by BGE, even though the work order clearly stated that we needed a new service line. The foreman stated he would contact BGE and arrange the BGE inspector appointment. After two weeks there was no follow up by Blue Jay. The secretary stated forms had been submitted, but the entire permit requirements were not finished. After calling or emailing every other day for another two weeks, we decided to discontinue pursuit of this work through Blue Jay due to a complete lack of correspondence and communication from their staff. Calling again one month later it became apparent the BGE appointment had never been made and the documentation never submitted. Very disappointed to have wasted two months attempting to get a significant amount of electrical work done for our home.

The job was originally scheduled as just a service entrance cable replacement and the price was quoted for that job. A few days prior to the scheduled work, the customer changed the service request to upgrade the entire electrical service to 200 amp. When the technician arrived, he found out the customer had already contacted BGE; however, had not communicated this information with us prior to the job starting which created a discrepancy in where the location of the service entrance cable and meter would go. BGE has requirements for clearances over porches and roofs for their service loops and requirements on meter locations based on the meter being subject to damage. Because of this, we could not perform the work that day; however, we explained the protocol to the customer then began the process with BGE by submitting a service application with them. The only communication with Tracy, our office manager, was through the customer's husband [Member Name Removed]. Communication was several times a week for several weeks. We explained that we were waiting for BGE's response to the project being assigned to a designer and would follow up as soon as we knew. BGE can take anywhere from [Member Information Removed] to 5 weeks before a designer will be assigned and the appointment for a site visit is made. During this time, the customer was in the process of getting married and specifically said if we couldn't coordinate with BGE before August 15th, then it would need to wait until after they returned from wedding and out town travel. The designer, Steven Foster, emailed our office on August 10th indicating he was assigned the project, but that his work load was very full and he would not be able to get a site visit scheduled for a few weeks. We expressed to him the time crunch because of the customer's wedding and he said "I will try to get to it by next week but it might be closer to [Member Information Removed] weeks before I am able to start on it". We responded to Mr. Foster and indicated again the importance of the timeframe, and waited to hear back from him. We then relayed this information to [Member Name Removed] and told him we would keep in touch and let him know as soon as we heard back from the designer. This took place the week of the customer's wedding. The next response we received was [Member Name Removed]'s review on Angie's List indicating they were going to use another electrician and did not want us to proceed with the work. Based on this information, we assumed we were off the project. We then received an email from [Member Name Removed] on September 13th asking the status of BGE and indicating they did in fact want us to do the work. At that time, we sent another email to Mr. Foster from BGE asking the status of the site visit. We try our best to communicate with customers promptly, and we have over 400 A ratings and have won the super service award for 7 years. We are not perfect, but we try our best. Based on the negative reviews given by [Member Name Removed], we apologize, but we longer want to do this project. We have sent a separate email to the customer providing the BGE information to move forward with another electrician.

Details of the services required were provided to the office staff, but the onsite contractor was unprepared to offset the service line and said a designer for BGE would be required to continue with the work. After waiting 2 weeks, the BGE request from Blue Jay had not been completed. After waiting 5 weeks and calling every other day for status updates without return phone calls and no indication that any progress was being made, we have decided to start over with another company.

We had a great experience with Blue Jay Electric and I would definitely recommend them. Rich and Jesse were very professional, punctual, and respectful. Rich frequently checked in with us to let us know how the job was going, and made us aware of any potential snags so that we would not be surprised. Thankfully, the job went very smoothly, and I have no doubt that this was in part because we were dealing with experienced and skilled electricians. I am very happy with the quality of work that we received, and I would not hesitate to call Blue Jay for future work. The price that we paid was very competitive with the other quotes that I received when shopping around. I decided on going with Blue Jay because they had done a lot of work in my neighborhood (in the Catonsville area), and I am so glad I did. Rich and Jesse were familiar with homes of similar age and style to mine, so I felt even more at ease with our decision to go with Blue Jay for our service upgrade. If there were an area of improvement, I would say that my communications with their office could have gone more smoothly. After Rich and Jesse came out and did the rough-in, we needed to schedule the inspector and then have BGE come out. We were told the office would contact us with the appointment times in the next few days. In both cases, I waited about a week and had to leave a message before the appointment times were made. I will say, that once I called, the appointments were promptly scheduled. So I wouldn't grade the responsiveness as an 'A' due to my experience, but I felt like Blue Jay worked to make it right as promptly as possible once I called to remind them. Overall, I am very pleased and will encourage my friends and family to call Blue Jay for future electrical work.

I hired Blue Jay Electric to finish a wiring job started by another company that was unqualified to do the work. The job involved running 6 CAT-6 Ethernet lines to several rooms in our house. This involved a significant amount of drywall cutting to run the wiring through the walls. They also had to replace an in-wall HDMI cable that was damaged by the original workers. The electricians from Blue Jay Electric did a good job, got everything done quickly ,and charged a fair price.

Panel and receptacles were installed ok. Totally messed up the LED lights on dimmer and after calling tech support realized they were installed incorrectly. During original install, when things didn't seem right I called and left voicemail on Jay's cell phone and called the office but nobody returned my call. Basically the "Master" electrician lied to me because they wouldn't listen to me, read the instructions and were too proud to call manufacturer technical support. They blamed it on the dimmers and said they were defective which turned out to be flat wrong. They didn't wire the lights to the drivers and had to have another electrician come out and do it correctly.
Description of Work: New electrical panel, move receptacles (120 & 220v), and install commercial grade LED lights on dimmers. I hired them because they had "Master" electricians, were local and recommended.

I initially met with Jay to go over all the various details of the items I wanted done. I really liked working with jay as he not only gave me a lot of detailed information about the work to be done, but he really listened to my requirements and adjusted his plans/etc. accordingly. I really felt like I was working with him on coming up with the best options. Among other things, we had a very complicated issue with our foyer and switches that were opposite of what they should have been to switch an outlet (not a light) in the foyer and one to switch the lights for the 2nd floor stairwell. After the initial consultation, we had several "discussions" via emails. Jay wound up providing me with 3 different ranging in price so I could choose between the "ideal" solution (of light/switch placements) and something that may not be perfect, but would be less costly. Once we decided on how to proceed. I was provided with a detailed proposal including the specific cost. We decided to proceed and we were scheduled for the work about a week or so later when it fit in our schedule - as the work would occur over two days. The solution we choose was going to take a fair amount of re-wiring and also several cuts into existing drywall (which I planned on repairing). Jay indicated he was going to send out an experienced crew to handle this work. The team (of two) he sent out did an excellent job. Furthermore, they respected our house/kids/dog and also kept things clean. When there were any questions with how to proceed, they would give me a detailed explanation and asked for my input. All the work - esp. the foyer/stairwell - came out as good or better than I imagined. (Those switches had bugged since we had moved into the house!). We were completely pleased with this work and in fact, called them out for a bit more work (small job) about a month or so later - which was also done very well. I would highly recommend Blue Jay Electric and will definitely se them for my future electric projects.
Description of Work: A number of improvements to existing circuits/etc., such as: split overloaded circuit into two separate circuits (including routing new wiring through finished space); moving incorrectly placed hardwired fore alarm; add dedicated 20amp circuit for clothes washer; add new outlet in bedroom; and re-route/re-configure foyer/stairs switches and add recessed lights in the foyer.

Blue Jay Electric has my highest recommendation. They are extremely knowledgeable, professional and did the job in under the expected time I thought it would take to get it done. Replacing the entire bus panel for the circuit breaker is no easy job but they did it with the least amount of mess (which they cleaned up when finished). If required in the future I would have no hesitancy in hiring them again. They are the Best!

First appointment was for 8/4/15, technician arrived so late in the day he only had time to do the replacement light, and had to come back 2 days later to wire and install the other lights. The house, trim, and existing lights are all dark brown, but the three lights Blue Jay installed were white, and so were the 2 light blocks for the new lights. I called Jay to say I wanted them replaced with dark brown lights and blocks. One suggestion was to paint the white ones, but a hardware store told me that would be unsatisfactory as the paint would come off. After another conversation, Jay agreed to install different lights. A few weeks later I was asked if black lamps would be OK since they couldn't find brown ones. I agreed, and a technician came to install the black lamps. He put up the first lamp, where there was already a dark brown light block, but did not have brown light blocks for the other two lights. He offered to spray paint the white ones, which I reminded him would not work. He said he would order brown light blocks and come back. On 10/20/15 I called Blue Jay for status, and was told they had forgotten to order the blocks. I told them not to bother, I would find someone else. I'm sorry to give Blue Jay such a poor rating, because they've done a lot of good work on the house in the past. But after 2 -1/2 months, this experience has been so expensive, frustrating, and unproductive that I won't call them again.
Description of Work: Blue Jay was contracted to replace one outside light with a motion detector security light, and to add wiring for and install 2 other motion detector security lights, mounted over existing vinyl siding like other lights already on the house.

Initially, Jay, the owner, estimated my work would cost under $1,000, but later changed it to $1,100 based on "cost of supplies," as he said. Expecting quality work as noted in recent Angie List reviews, I agreed to pay the higher amount. Jay arrived at 9 AM on Sept 9th by himself and I watched him do some of his work. He was there for the good part of he day, but in late afternoon was joined by another of his employees. A few days later I began noticing problems with the work done by Jay's company. Using a Surge Protector Device in some of the electrical outlets, I found some that were NOT grounded -- things that were said to be corrected. This was the case in one in the dining-room, also the only 2 receptacles in my attic and in 2 of the 3 receptacles in my family room in the rear of the house. Again in the family-room, 2 of the 3 inner wiring-boxes of the receptacles pulled out from the wall. The receptacle holding-box screws in both of them were NOT properly installed or long enough to hold them in place on the wall behind the receptacle-plate. I have duct-tape holding 2 of the family room receptacles on the wall, even the 1 receptacle of the 3 that does work. Granted I was exhausted the day he was there from a house settlement on 8/28 and a physical move into the house the day before he arrived to do the work, but I expected better workmanship than I received for the amount of money I paid his company.
Description of Work: The primary repairs to be made were to clean up the wiring in the cellar, label a circuit breaker box, replace 2 overhead cellar lights, disconnect a gas heater capping the gas-pipe, fixing the broken attic-fan and he was supposed to check the safety of all the electrical outlets in the house to ascertain if any ungrounded or reverse polarity. He did perform most of the repairs with the exception of all of the receptacles being grounded.

Jay came to give me a quote on the work needed to be done. He told me what I needed to be done and what would bring it up to code. He suggested that I get a new control box since it's kind of old and if I want a master shut off switch, I would need one. I was given two options written in the contract, option one for the box and option two for the rest of the work. For some strange reason, I thought option two also included option one. I decided on option two. Rich came by the house and made quick work of everything that needed to be done. He told me that he would have to come back another day for the box. He came back the next day with Kevin and after looking at the box and the amount of work to be done asked me why I want to switch out the box anyways. They both agree that I had more than enough amps to power the house, they both agree that I didn't need to waste my money but would do what I wanted. I decided to not do it but thought about that and decided to call Jay to ask how much would it cost now since we decided not to do the box? I left him a message but didn't receive a call. Later that day, Rich told me that he discussed with Jay about the box and the prices and that I should have known they were different. Rich finished most of the work and was going to come back after the island was put in to do the outlets and pot-lights. I tried calling Jay again the next day but only received a call from the secretary Tracie again stating that the options were on the contract and I should have known. I informed her that I would like a call back from Jay. It's now about two months later and still no call back from Jay. Word of advice, if you have a contract dispute, he may not call you back. I understand I may have misread the contract and thought it was more than what I had hoped for. If I had known how much it would have cost between both the work, I would have gone with someone else. Rich was very professional and did a very good job but Jay left a bad taste in my mouth so I would not recommend this company because of him!!
Description of Work: They pulled out the old electrical wires, and rewired any ones in my kitchen, put two outlets into the island, and installed 4 potlights.
