+ 1 moreTheir schedule was so full when I first called that there was a 5-week wait. But I'm glad that I waited because their work is excellent. When I called to schedule they let me know about how long it would take, and that their policy was that 4 hours equals four man-hours (2 hours for a team of 2 workers). They let me know up front that fixing celings in four rooms would probably exceed the 4-hour deal. They called the day before to confirm and arrived promptly. I showed them the rooms that needed work and they told me about how long it would take. I agreed to pay for up to two additional hours at their standard rate and told them which jobs took priority. They cut out drywall tape that had come loose and patched other cracks. They plastered, sanded, re-plastered, and re-sanded. They covered the area beneath with a plastic dropcloth so nothing was damaged. They noticed that my handrail had come loose and asked if they could fix it. They attached it securely to a stud, rather than into the drywall as the builder had done. I hadn't originally planned to have them do handyman work, but they did such a nice job on the handrail that I asked them to do two more jobs from by "honey-do" list. It didn't cause them to go over -- everything was completed within the time originally agreed. They cleaned up at the end and brought the trash from the job outside with them. All in all this was a very positive experience.
Description of Work: I hired them to fix drywall tape that had become loose on ceilings in several rooms of my house. I also had them do some handyman work (adjusting the door of a medicine cabinet that would not close, reattaching a handrail on the stairs, and hanging a heavy piece of art).

Turned out the damage was not as extensive as feared; their repair was excellent; and my problem was quickly solved! I will definitely recommend them to friends and family.

+ 2 moreAfter leaving messages on 1/16 and 1/17 I was able to talk to Mr. Brown and after describing work to be done he set an appointment for 2 PM on Friday 2/24- I offered to give him my cell and home phone numbers and directions to the house but he assured me that the contact info was on the Angie's List coupon and that he had GPS and would be there with another worker. I called several days before the appointment to confirm. 2/24 - No Show and when I reached him after 4 PM he told me that his "worker had called me 3 times" that day (no calls on cell phone) and that Angie's List had the wrong area code (204) instead of 301. He wanted to come the following day but I was unable to arrange that so we set another appointment (giving him the benefit of the doubt) for 3/3/12 when he promised to personally be at the house at 8 AM with another worker. At 8:25 I called his number - no answer, left voice message. I called again at approx 9 AM and again no answer so I left another message that I was not pleased with 2 No Shows and that I wanted to terminate the association. He called the house (had the correct number that time) and yelled at our housekeeper that he Did Not have an appointment - she gave him my cell number and told him to call me. He called me at 9:24 AM 3/3/12 and asked if he had an appointment and I reminded him that he had personally promised to be at the house at 8 AM. He claimed that "they had called me 3x yesterday" (again no calls on cell phone)- only this time they had the correct area code but incorrect last 4 numbers despite my giving the house and cell numbers to him on 2/24 and he wanted the address (he previously claimed to have it on the coupon). I told him that I was not interested in having him do any work for us.
Description of Work: Was to have been plaster repair in a guest room and repainting of guest bath - not done.

+ -1 morePlease see above. The drywall repairs were sloppily and selectively done. That is, some cracks were mudded but other, equally conspicuous cracks were left untouched. I am completely dissatisfied with the work done on my living room crown molding/chair rail. That will now require extensive sanding to correct.
Description of Work: I contracted with J & D Services to repair some settlement cracks in my drywall. When the contractor arrived, he didn't have the appropriate supplies with him, and asked me if I had read the "fine print" on my contract. I indeed had, pulled it up on my computer and we read the qualifiers together. The lead handyman then made excuses for not having caulking material (his drywall medium of choice) on hand, telling me that Angie's List limited him to 100 words in his promotional. The fact that I was expected to have caulking, wood putty, etc. was Antge's List's fault, because they didn't allow him to expand his ad enough to detail that level of specificity. When the technician who took my initial report over the phone heard the contractor's excuse, he immediately disabused me of its truthfulness. Your rep indicated that he's seen Angie's listings that run several pages because of all the contractor's disclosures. I am therefore forced to conclude that J & B was deliberately obtuse in its advertisement. Moreover, J & D voluntarily disclosed that he's had similar problems with other clients, has been in resolution with Angie's List in the past, and has been required to reimburse customers for specific performance issues. The ongoing problems with J & D Services is a practice pattern. I have two specific complaints. First, the quality of craftsmanship with this contractor was poor. The workers did such a poor job of applying the caulking and mud that I will have to spend a disproportionate amount of time correcting their work. Second, I paid an additional $75 to have some crown molding and chair rail finished. J & D charged me an additional $75 for this work, and didn't disclose until the end of my two hour session that I had forfeited two man hours to have this work done. When I paid the extra money it was my reasonable expectation that J & D would do the drywall repair for the contracted four man hours and then do the crown molding/chair rail repairs.

The lead guy told me he would come back and never did. They also made up every excuse not to complete the additional work I asked for in order to leave. Would not recommend...

When I called to schedule, I left a voicemail, and Jerome, the owner, promptly returned my call to schedule service. He arrived on time with an additional worker, asked questions about each thing on my list, and got to work right away. They were professional from start to finish, and did very nice work.

+ -1 moreThey were excellent. They arrived right on time. The special was for 4 man hours. Jerome, the owner, came. He had told me he would bring another person, and stay 2 hours, but he had brought 2 people with him, and they didn't run out after 2 hours. They stayed until the job was finished. He even helped with a few other things, such as changing light bulbs in fixtures too high for me to reach, which really wasn't part of the special I purchased. They were good, efficient, and hardworking.
Description of Work: I bought the Angie's List special of $120 for 4 man hours. Our dog was a destructive puppy. She chewed some of the molding on the first floor, and corners of the wall. Also some of the wall corners had a bit of chipping along the edge. We also had some painting touch up work needed. I know replacing the molding would have been the perfect fix, but I asked them to try to just repair and fill the spots. There were a lot of places, and replacing all the molding in those areas would have taken a long time and been very costly. They did a great job of patching and repairing those areas without replacing the molding. Exactly what I wanted.

+ -1 moreI had a Groupon or Angieslist deal for 4 hours of Drywall repair for $120. Setting up the appointment was fairly easy. Even though the original dates they said they were available when I asked if they could accommodate something sooner Jerome worked it out for me. It was huge to be able to get this done before guests arrived the next week. Jerome arrived right at 8:00 a.m. with one other guy. I had two huge holes in my ceiling from various plumbing repairs. They set up, put plastic down, and got to work quickly. They did a very good job. The repairs look great. I rushed them out a bit so the clean up was not perfect but they did a good job even with that. I will be calling them back to do the finish work and painting.
Description of Work: I had two holes in my ceiling from plumbing repairs. one was about 1 sq ft the other was about 4 sq ft. This was not the standard drywall repair expected. So I needed to pick up a couple 2x2 drywall pieces for the repairs.

Many contractors might have taken the short cut. Indeed they were right. The job was done so well only minimal sponge sanding was needed to prep for paint. Wonderful! I would hire them again.

They immediately assessed that it might take more than the time alloted by the coupon even though it was one wall because all new pieces needed to be cut to patch about 10 holes and they needed to correct work done by another contractor to complete the job. + -1 moreJerome Brown and another worker did a beautiful job fixing some major cracks and bumpy areas in the drywall on several walls in my 60-year-old townhouse. In addition, they were punctual (they actually arrived early at 7:45 for an 8:00 am appointment), very polite, professional, and cleaned up after themselves. But what impressed me most was how honest Jerome was in telling me that the work areas I had identified would take less time than I thought it would, and that I could either get a refund for my 2nd "Big Deal" voucher or keep it for future work. They worked very quickly and addressed my problem areas in 2 hours, then Jerome answered any questions I had and offered his advice for future work. The only area for improvement is communcation - one needs to be persistent in trying to get ahold of Mr. Brown (cell phone seems to work better than email for him) because he is so busy and usually out on jobs during the day. However, I would be very happy to use them again and recommend them to others. Thank you, Jerome!

+ 0 moreWell - long story short - I paid for two "big deals" - contacted J&D numerous times - finally settled on a date for painting two rooms - I was going to supply everything - just needed the painting done. J&D was a NO SHOW (one day of wasted leave for me) - no phone call, no email NOTHING. I tried to contact Angie's list as well, no response to them either for a refund or assistance. I should have been so leary after this but no - I purchased another big deal which also did not work out. I think sometimes the local contractors over extend themselves, instead of just being honest - they ignor you! Bottom line, no work, no refund, no communication from Angie's List either.

They were very professional, completing the work in the amount of time they said it would take, and they clearly take pride in their work. The paint job looked great, again, very professional. They came well-prepared and had all the tools they needed to get the job done; Jerome was great about asking questions before moving forward with a particular task, so that it would exactly what I wanted. I would most defintely recommend Jerome and his team and will not hesitate to contact them again for any work I might need done around the house.

+ -1 moreAs you can tell, I had quite a few odd jobs that needed to be performed. After reading members' comments on the Angie's list website, I contacted Jerome to ascertain his availability. I contacted him on Thursday, December 15 and was very pleased to be informed that he had an opening on Saturday, December 17. I purchased the handyman service for 8 hours which included Jerome and his assistant dilligently working for 4 hours which equates to 8 man hours. Jerome and his assistant arrived promptly at the alloted hour and got right down to business. They were so efficient and moved so quickly that Jerome informed me that based on my original list and the time I had booked, I could definitely add additional items to the list of handyman duties. Color me happy because I added the new front porch light and the door kickplate to the list. I got maximum bang for my buck because they kept things moving. I am very particular and meticulous and I can say with 100% certainty that Jerome performed outstanding work. I am really pleased with the work and the professionalism of both gentlemen. I also appreciated the good feedback and recommendations Jerome gave me on my ceiling fan that will be installed at a later date. He also gave a wonderful recommendation on my drywall repair. And, he has decorating skills and provided helpful input on the placement of my wall art! I have his card and contact information and plan to use him again and recommend him to friends and family. Outstanding job well done!
