A.P. Mathews Heating & Air Conditioning Inc

The company responded promptly to an e-mail request for service. I e-mailed on 8/8/13 in the evening. They were at my door at 10 a.m. the next day to fix the problem. Everything was handled very well.

This is a continuation of a previous review I wrote as the circumstances changed. Sunday morning,7/21/2013, after my old Trane Heatpump sounded like fireworks went off within the unit and smoke poured out, I called A P Mathews Heating and Air Conditioning. The technician came out Monday morning,7/22/2013, inspected our Heatpump and said it looked OK but would need a new Start Kit to get it running again. He installed the Start Kit, everything seemed fine and we had Air conditioning; I gladly paid $197.00 thinking it was fixed and thinking that our Heatpump would still work for a few years more; but sadly the Air Conditioning only lasted one day. The next day I called A P Mathews again, told them our Heatpump only worked for one day and asked if the Technician could come out again to see what was wrong. The same Technician came out again, reinspected the unit and said we would need a whole new system: New Heatpump, New Air Handler, New Thermostat and New Outdoor Electric Disconnect Box. We had to wait one week without any Air Conditioning before the installation could begin. It was very difficult because we are senior citizens with health problems and we have a little dog, but we survived with a floor fan. I talked to the owner, Paul, about what models would be installed; he emailed me an Estimate & Agreement detailing the work that would be done, the models that would be installed and the total price. On Monday morning,7/29/2013, at 8:40 AM, Paul called and said the Installer would be arriving between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM; He and his helpers didn't arrive until after 11:00 AM. The Installer, Evid who is from Honduras, brought 2 young men with him as his helpers. When they did arrive they got right to work and worked without interruption until 5:20 PM. Evid was obviously in charge and even though Spanish is his first language, it was clear to me that he really knew his job, and he knew how to instruct his American helpers to make sure they correctly did what he asked them to do. Around 2 PM, Paul arrived to see how the installation was going and at that time, I paid Paul in full for the job even though it wasn't completed. Around 5:00PM, the installation was completed but the system didn't work, it wasn't cooling. Evid went back over the wiring, found the problem, which was not his fault, and fixed the problem, We now have wonderful cool air! It's been 4 days and everything is working fine so far. Evid is professional, he really knows his job and is an expert installer. The two young American men who helped Evid were about 20 yrs. old and it was clear that they respected Evid as their Boss. Evid checked everything they did. I feel lucky that Evid was our Installer. I trust Paul Mathews, his prices are fair, his employees are professional, knowledgeable, and polite. In addition to Trane's warranty which is 12yrs on the compressor and 10 yrs on the coils and parts for the units we purchased, Paul gives 2 yrs. warranty on parts and labor with his company. Paul said his wife, Gerry, is going to complete the warranty registration with Trane for us, and they will send us the papers for the Federal Tax Credit for the Heatpump, and the papers from BG&E for their Rebate. I'm happy we found A P Mathews Heating and Air Conditioning on Angies list. We're going to stay with him for all of our Heating and Air Conditioning needs.

Saturday evening, we realized that our A/C wasn't working. Found this company listed at the top of Angie's List (sorted by recent good reviews within 10 miles of us.) Left a message on Sunday morning before heading out for the day. We do have a dual zone, but the one that was broken covers the majority of the house. So we retreated into our one cool area overnight Sunday. They called first thing Monday morning, arrived before noon, & got it fixed in about 20 minutes at a very reasonable price. So delighted that it could get taken care of so quickly & easily.

Earl Sunday morning my outside Heat-pump/airconditioning unit sounded as if very loud Fireworks were going off within the unit; this went on for about 6 seconds then a lot of smoke poured out from the unit. My downstairs neighbor ran out of her condo in her bathrobe as I did, we knew something had burned up within the unit! My upstairs unit was off at the thermostat but I also immediately pulled-out the fuses, connected to the Heat-pump, from the box inside my condo so that the unit would be totally disconnected. Prior to this when my usual company came out to do the unit's Spring Service, everything was fine at that time except they said the unit needed 4 lbs. of Freon, which seemed strange to me because my unit was cooling very well and my electric bills are low. But I am not an HVAC technician and I have to trust them. Three weeks after my Spring Service was done, my inside unit started making clanging sounds that continued for 15 minutes.When I called my usual company with whom I have been doing business for over 3 yrs., they sent out the same technician who did our Spring Service to determine what was wrong. He really didn't do anything except turn on the unit and listen to it; then he said he didn't know why it happened. This leads us to 5 days later when the outside unit seemed to "blow up". I called my usual company for help, the owner spoke with me and didn't seem like he wanted to come out and help; I hadn't been happy with this company so I decided to check Angie's list, that's when I found AP Mathews Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. Paul the owner called me back on Sunday and said he would come out the next day. Around 7:30 AM Monday morning Paul called and said he was sending his technician Matt out first thing. Matt was very professional and knows his job. He checked the outside unit and discovered the Start Kit had burned out and needed to be replaced. He checked the Freon levels and said they were fine. He inspected the outside unit for any other damage and he drilled some holes on the outside unit casing to reaffix the BGE recycle box that BGE hadn't attached securely. If it weren't for Paul Mathews sending his technician Matt to diagnose and fix our unit we would still be suffering in the heat. My husband and I are senior citizens with several health problems and even though we grew up without airconditioning, at this point in our lives it is very difficult for us without it. We are so happy we found AP Mathews Heating and Air Conditioning. The owner Paul was very quick to respond to our problem and he seemed happy to help, his prices for labor and parts are more than fair. His technician Matt was professional, knows his job, doesn't waste time, and has good interpersonal skills. We have found someone we can trust and we are going to stay with Paul Mathews for all of our Heating and Air conditioning needs. You can't go wrong with AP Mathews Heating and Air conditioning, Inc.

They were great, they even sent a technician the day we called to schedule an appointment because we had smelled a slight gas odor and they wanted to make sure we were safe. They came back in a couple of days and inspected our hvac system and did a great job. I will be using them for all my hvac needs in the future.

Called in the AM and was told they could come out in a few hours. Dispatch called later to let me know they would be even earlier then expected, which was fine with me. 2 service techs came out, looked at the clogged pipe, blew out the line to unclog it. The other one looked around back of the house to see if there were any issues with outdoor pipes that might be causing a problem. Ran some water down the pipe to make sure it was not backing up anymore. It was all fixed within 10-15 minutes. They said to let them know if there's anymore blockage problems and they will come back out. Everyone was very nice, professional and efficient. I even recommended AP Mathews to a family member and they went to their house and fixed their A/C problem, too. That tech did a work around on an issue so it would even save them money.

Professional, courteous and upfront information about pricing was provided. Great!

Came after the promised time, but called to let us know ahead of time. Showed up, fixed the problem outside, replaced a fuse on the inside and was done in a flash. 90+ degree day so was great they were able to come out the same day I called for a reasonable rate!

The service was very good. They were very good and very nice. They did a good job. I bought a big deal which was for 200 dollars off an Air Conditioner unit and we paid more because we bought a big unit. They had the best price, they did what they said they would and we were just happy that we didn't have a bad experience. Everything got done nicely and in time.

Continuing from the previous answer.....everything went on very well. They were prompt on all their appointments. They were very professional and they worked continuously until the installation was complete. Then the "boss" came and inspect the work and the unit before we had to pay for the service. He explained to us how to change the filter and how to take care of the unit both inside and outside. I will recommend AP Mathews. Their price was very reasonable and they DID A GREAT JOB.

Beat two other estimates by thousands. They noted several areas of improvements to our master bedroom and kitchen and added them to the estimate which was still a great price. I was most impressed with the professionalism, timeliness and accuracy of their work. In and out in just over a day was a surprising feat for my wife and me. My neighbors were planning to install a system like ours and I recommended them with great confidence...and they went with them with equal results. I will call on them again for any job that falls inside the scope of their capability. Complete satisfaction.

Drain cleaned. More importantly, technician (Dave) installed a t joint so we can clean in the future. In and out in 30 minutes. Gat service.

Excellent service. They showed up right on time and immediately diagnosed the problem.

That was good. They allowed me to tag along and answered some questions that I had.

Great experience! I will be calling them in the future for any HVAC needs. I called A P Mathews, in pure frustration with One Hour Air Condititoning and Heating (formerly Chilltrol). Initially I spoke with Geri and explained the issues I was having with the other company, but said I had decided to continue with their services (there was a two day wait for parts...but I kept thinking that might mean another week without AC). Geri never bad mouthed the other company as I vented, which says a lot about a company and how they do business. The more I thought about it, the more I felt like I might get better, faster, service from AP Mathews...and the house with no AC after several days was getting toasty! Although I was considered a "priority" customer with the other company, only AP Mathews treated me like one. I contacted AP Mathews again and asked to see if they could come out the next day, they found a way to fit me into the schedule the next morning. They also asked what make and model unit I had and were able to bring out the proper parts needed to fix the AC. I really appreciate that they made the extra effort to take care of the problem as soon as possible. Work was completed in 1 1/2 hours and the house felt great shortly afterwards. Very professional and efficient. I see now why they are so highly rated on AngiesList.

I purchased a Big Deal coupon for A P Mathews Heating & Air Conditioning. He was very reasonable with his price versus the people I looked at. He's very responsive, professional. He did the job faster than I thought he would get it done. It was a good experience.

The tech was on time, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Only two days after fixing a clogged drain on my A/C I called them back to the house to fix my hot water heater. It had stopped working. The weather had just turned hot and they were jammed on the schedule and still got me on the schedule the same day I called. The technician took the heating element apart and cleaned it from some carbon scarring. He examined the rest of the unit and said they would order the replacement heating unit, because my hot water heater didn't use the industry standard generic replacement modules. He told me the water heater would continue to work, but when it became carbon scared next time cleaning wouldn't work. So they will have the needed parts the next time it fails, and he got our hot water back without having to wait for a part to arrive. Courteous and not looking to make a fortune on every sale.

The air conditioner was accumulating water, and had stopped producing cold air. The technician was here the very next day, it was a simple fix, took him less than five minutes (still paid the full $125.00 for the service call - - but I knew it going in.) The technician showed me how to clean the drain if it happened again, so was very pleased with the outcome.

From the start to finish every part of this business is fantastic. I would recommend them to everyone. The lady that first took my call, was professional, but not cold. She told me exactly what the details were, we made an appt for service and it couldn't have been better. She spoke in a voice that I could feel her smiling, Matt came in a company marked clean van, and as I said he was spic and span and knew exactly what he was doing. A pleasant experience, and a job done like it was right out of a text book. They get five stars in my book.

Paul and his crew did excellent work, even though they had relocate the inside evaporator unit into a large closet, re-route ducting and electrical and run new refridgerant lines.

Tech was on time and diagnosed the problem within a few minutes. Unfortunately the comperssor was shot and given the age of the system it was not worht replacing. Tech reviewed the various options with me before he left.

Tech was very professional and friendly. Did an outstanding job. Will use again!

I called AP Mathews on 5/20/2013 and explained that I had replaced the thermostat for our heating and a/c system a few months ago. The heating worked fine but when I turned it to "cool", nothing happened. The lady on the phone arranged for a technician to visit the next day between 12 noon and 2pm. The next day the technician arrived at 12.30, found that there was no power to the thermostat - tested the transformer in the basement and found that it had been burnt out when I had attached the wrong wires to the thermostat. The technician had a transformer with him which he replaced and had the system working within 2 hours. My 22 year old daughter was at home when the technician visited and she felt comfortable with him and he acted very professionally at all times. Now we have a company for any future A/C and heating needs - or if we decide to replace the thermostat again :)
