Was nervous buying this, since my husband wasn't happy about paying for outside help, but the shutter project had been discussed each summer, but had not been tackled in over 8 years. And the new ceiling fan was purchased 10 month prior and was still sitting in its box. So when i saw the special deal of $179 for 4 Hours of Handyman Service, and with reading the great reviews about Noonan's service, I plowed ahead. What a great decision, and my husband was very impressed too. We had 6 pairs of old wooden shutters that they replaced with vinyl shutters. We have a split level home (small - 1,400 sqft) and top shutters were on the vinyl siding and the lower 3 pairs was on brickfront. That project was completed smoothly and without a hitch, and finished up quicker than we anticipated. The ceiling fan was easy-peasy for our guy (it was replacing an existing one) and that left him with enough time to paint the front door to match new shutters. Our guy was on time, professional, down-to-earth, and did great work. Am definitely planning to use them again in the future, very happy!

Not well, I found their price too high for extras. Noonan construction cancelled their appointment with me on the day of the scheduled appointment. A Noonan Construction employee arrived on time for the second scheduled appointment. He looked at my basement and made some measurements on 11/21. The proposal was promised by 12/3. The proposal arrived on 12/23, after I sent an e-mail on the status of my proposal. The proposal was for an additional $26,132.00 to do a basement with the same approximate square footage. I compared this to the Angie's list offer and found their proposal was overpriced for the extras (egress window, moving the drains and gas lines, additional lighting, a small closet. I already have received on quotes on installing an egress window and adding new gas lines and they should total no more than $12,000. I am confident I can find a local contractor to do the work for less than $31,132.00.

No one gave me an estimate after missing a day of work to entertain them.
Description of Work: What a horrible company! I, like other most recent reviewers, scheduled with the Vice President Mike to complete an estimate for a basement remodel that they advertised on this site. Mike did show as agreed. However, he promised an estimate in one week. Hearing nothing from him, I called the General Manager and she promised that one of the two would get back to me. That was three weeks ago and still no response. I took off from work to meet Mike. This company needs to learn quality customer service.

Response from Noonan Construction
We apologize for the inconvenience caused by our non-responsiveness. Again we were unexpectedly overwhelmed by the response to the Basement deal and wound not being able to deal with the volume of responses and the many levels of details that go with these estimates in a timely manner. We are addressing the issue of timeliness for when an estimate can be promised to a customer - and will strive to not leave a customer hanging like this in the future.

It took about a week from purchase and initial contact to schedule a visit for an estimate. The representative was polite & knowledgeable, but it took nearly two weeks to get an estimate. However, contrary to my requests, the estimate did not layout what was covered by the coupon and what was "extra" plus work above the coupon. Questions about the estimate took multiple (3 to 5) days to acknowledge or answer, and many were ignored. Asking for a revised quote for a 3/4 bath with no additional basement finish work, I was quoted nearly twice the coupon value and told the coupon "didn't really apply." I'm just not interested in debating the fine print and continuing to ask questions (like "when could you start?") that are ignored.

Early September I called for an estimate for stripping and siding to be done. I called and they said the estimate wouldn't cost much but they were busy for the next two weeks. They showed up two and half weeks later and didn't have a ladder that was long enough and it was also a two man job when only one man showed up. I made another appointment scheduled for another week and a half later and then was told the guy was sick. The third time they were supposed to be scheduled yet another week and a half later but it was raining. They scheduled again one more week and a half. It was last Friday and since it was a two man job the second guy didn't show. The manager said he would find someone else to show up and would let me know by noon. He couldn't find anybody. So four attempts that never go done and waiting for a phone or email back and no service. I thought this is getting ridiculous. It's an important job for my family. I kept getting bats in the house. I ended up waiting six weeks. Friday came and no call, Monday came and no response either. Called the general manager and she refused to talk to me. I said "I can't believe this is going on." I was told there weren't enough workers. She then said that her hands were tied and and she could not talk to me. And that she would have Brian call me. He called about an hour later and said "First thing, who are you, and why are you calling?" He had no idea what was going on. Then said "Oh yeah I heard about that job, I was supposed to call you, what do you want done on Monday?" I told him all I want is someone to be here Monday to do the job. I need 2 guys you have to do the work and you have workers everywhere. Can you pull someone off another job to get this done. He said give me some time to find someone. Then he called at 9 o'clock to say he couldn't find anyone. Every time they didn't come I called and they never sent anyone. They had an estimate that this shouldn't be more than a 2 hour job.
Description of Work: I had requested service to get an area where bats living in the house to be boarded up.

We apologize for not being able to provide the service which we originally thought we had the capacity to perform when we spoke with you. It was not our intention to mislead you - and since our carpenter purchased the materials and made more than one trip to your property at our expense we were making every effort possible to do the job.

Communication to schedule the visit went fine. When Mike came to measure, we discussed the type and color of shingles and adding a "cricket" by the chimney for an additional $200. Then Mike measured the roof and it was all downhill from there. When he finished and we discussed price, he reminded me that the price goes up above 1800 sq. feet which I knew. He then said my roof was 2533 sq. feet and by his calculations, this would add another $2383 to the cost of the big deal, not counting the $200 for the cricket. The total to me would be a whopping $8082: more than $2500 over the big deal (more than $2300 w/o the cricket). I told him this was much more than I expected. Then I checked my prior "non big deal" Angie's estimates from other companies and realized that this was higher than another estimate. Looking closer, I realized that the other contractors measured my roof at 2232 sq feet, NOT 2533 sq. feet. Noonan had added 300 sq feet that wasn't there. this is where I started feeling like I was being taken advantage of. Mike's explanation was that he added this for "waste". I wonder why the others didn't need to do that! I told him that this was no longer a "big deal" and that another came in lower for the same thing. I did some calculations and told Mike that being the roof was 24% larger than the 1800, it would seem fair that the price would also be 24% larger: $6819. He said he would discuss w his partner and provide a proposal. I didn't hear from them and realized the 30 days were running out so I emailed them and said if I didn't have it by 11/14, i would have to request a refund. They sent a new proposal 11/14 but it was only $500 less than previously ($7582) and no longer include the cricket, so really it was a $300 reduction. In fact the proposal was very confusing and included inconsistent language w/ the big deal language. I decided that I just cannot trust this company. For example, if I hired them and they say the wood underneath the shingles needs replacement or there are other "added" costs, how will I know this is true, given the misrepresentation of my roof's measurement? I don't want to take the chance, especially with something so costly that affects the house's structure. I appreciate Angie's ability to help me to get my refund.

The estimator showed on time and we spent an hour discussing the job. He said, it didn't really fit the deal, but he would think about what he would charge for the things that didn't quite fit and then send me a written estimate in about a week's time. After one and a half weeks, I called and left a message inquiring about the estimate, but never received a call back. A couple of days after that, I sent an email but did not receive a reply. I believe that they were overwhelmed with the responses they got and just couldn't handle replying to me. Disappointing.

Pleased with the work they did, which they did very quickly. Price was reasonable, in line with what others would charge. Only issue is they had to delay due to weather, which was understandable, except they didn't communicate this. If it were actually raining I wouldn't have been surprised, but it wasn't. Just would have appreciated a call. Nonetheless, good work and I would use them again.

They missed our scheduled appointment so we ended up rescheduling. Someone was supposed to come out and it became too late and I was concerned about the employee being on the roof late and had a bad feeling about it. I spoke with the owner who still wanted the employee to do the work and when I did not the call ended with him hanging up on me.

We apologize for the misunderstanding regarding your roof maintenance service. When you were speaking with Mr. Noonan he thought you had hung up on him - which is why the conversation ended badly. Regarding your concern for our employee - we understand and appreciate your worry. However, our roof maintenance technician assured us that he had the proper lighting he needed to lew of natural light to complete the job and since he was nearly to your house (a 45 minute drive) he was hoping to do the work. We acknowledge there was a communication break down - and are taking measures to make just this kind of situation doesn't occur again.

Job went well, Everything looks colorful and like brand new. Donnie was great, very meticulous in his work. He had me check his progress as he worked, which I appreciated. He has a very pleasant personality. I would have him come again when needed. I will also let my friends and neighbors know. Addendum -11/8/14- Had to call on 10/21/14 Donnie and the company because of a leak from the bathroom sink that had the faucet replaced. Donnie stopped by quickly to check the problem and told me to get another part that would stop the leak. Water was shut off for the sink.Donnie never returned to fix the leak. Finally had to call in someone else since water was off for 2 weeks and unable to use sink. When the repair was done, it was found that the new supply lines that were placed for the new faucet was not on straight, therefore causing the leak. At this point I will not be referring Donnie to any of my neighbors or friends. Painting of the bathroom's ceiling and trims was incomplete and had to be done by someone else. I had an additional cost for the same job that should have been completed initially. I guess the constant, "let me show you this" was his way .trying to impress me as to his professionalism...

The handyman arrived on time, and worked very quickly to do the projects we had on our list. We had a slight snafu because the office thought the handyman wouldn't be able to come on our scheduled day and cancelled it. When he came as originally scheduled, I spoke with the office and they were very apologetic. The good news was that the handyman was very good, very professional, and very nice. We are very happy with the work that was done. Everyone I have spoken with at Noonan has been very customer friendly and professional, so I would definitely use them again.

A full day of work was contracted on June 3, in anticipation of company arriving Aug 12. (4 hrs at the deal rate) Customer response to the ad was so great that after the initial confirmation, there were delays in telephone responses and ultimate scheduling with the Provider. Later, there were also missed communications between Noonan Construction and the Handyman. One item we discussed was not addressed by the handyman- looking at/ evaluating how to remove/ a cement based post in the back yard. On the day of the work, the handyman arrived and was very adept at repairing the loose guttering. This took less than 30 minutes. He expertly removed some cabinet doors in the kitchen before painting. The quality of the kitchen and stairwell wall painting was fine. He took less than 30 minutes for a lunch break. Don was very polite, agreeable, personable. However, it appeared that painting was not his favorite task. He asked to use my kitchen step ladder, as his needed new guards to prevent gouging the floor. I didn't mind, . . . but over the course of the job, he requested equipment I thought he should have had at the ready for a painting assignment. For example, when he heard that I'd purchased alkyd paint for base boards, he mentioned he didn't like to paint with alkyds, because brushes were more difficult to clean. He asked if I had a brush he could use. . . I gave him one. Then he wasn't sure he had enough edging tape for the job, and asked if I had some in case he ran out; that it would also save me money on material expenses. . . I found some for him. When he'd finished edging all around the kitchen, he went out to his truck to get a roller and tray for the walls. On the way he saw a cleaned roller and tray in our carport, and asked if he could use them. I was surprised, and remarked 'You don't have a roller and tray for a painting job?!' He said he did, but they were in the bottom of his truck and it would take him 15 minutes to dig them out. With good-humored emphasis, I said he could use them if he cleaned them up. Before 3 PM he said he was sorry, but he didn't think he could finish the base boards in the allotted time. I was surprised by this as well; told him I didn't think it would take two hours. I said I'd help tape off floors in the stairwell while he picked up drop cloths, etc in the kitch. He started to paint the base board, then again mentioned he just didn't think he could finish in time. I'd heard during the course of the day (he used ear buds while on the phone so he could continue painting) that he hoped to finish another job at the end of the day, before going home. I agreed to stop the time where he was. I felt OK about paying a fee for supplies, although I thought it ironic that he was charging me anything, when he'd borrowed so much. He quickly rehung the cabinet doors, cleaned up, had some closing conversation wanting to make sure I was happy with the work, and left. The painting that was done was very good. Then I found my paintbrush in the kitchen sink with a combination of latex and alkyd paint on it. The roller and tray were not as clean as he found them. . . There was paint on my kitchen stepladder. I was disappointed by the lack of professionalism.

Response from Noonan Construction
Thank you for your frank review of our services. As many other customers have mentioned we were swamped with responses for the handyman deal - which was unexpected and there were many delays in scheduled. We apologize for the inconvenience that caused. I appreciate your concern about our handyman no having the proper supplies to complete the job. We are addressing the language of our handyman agreements to more clearly spell out what the customer will need to provide for painting and other jobs that require disposable materials which Noonan Construction does not include in the cost of services. We are also being more diligent in getting details from our customers which will help our carpenters best address customer’s needs.
