They are very reliable and the price is fair. If you need service on ports or things beyond normal, they will give a 10% discount if you have a service contract with them. The technicians are knowledgeable and they clean up after themselves.

Paul was punctual, pleasant, professional and explained the different kinds of furnace filters better than had been done before, I guess there's more information now. He suggested a kind of filter trap now required but wasn't when our old system was installed, was able to do it then, and gave me a little discount.
Description of Work: As part of my semi annual service contract, which I didn't include in the cost, Paul checked my air conditioning system and suggested and installed a new filter trap.

Picked ESA because of their good rating and also proximity to my house. When phoned they came and gave a quote of $550 the same day to install a new exhaust fan in for our bathroom remodel and run ductwork to and through the roof. They apparently stated that they required someone else to actually mount the fan in the ceiling. We could not get this done so on the day of the install they increased the price by $100 to $650. They then proceeded to mis-locate the fan (too close to the heating air suppy outlet that is also in the ceiling) after we specifically showed them where to put the fan. When we asked them to put the fan in the correct location the installer said where he put it wasn't a problem because the fan would only be on for short periods of time so that not much of the heating air would be whisked outside and wasted. He then stated if we wanted it moved to the correct location (about 2 feet away) it would be another $200. We finally convinced them to install the fan in the correct location at no extra cost. In summary, the work was of high quality, was completed the day after being quoted, however, I would not use them again because of the issue with relocating the fan.
Description of Work: Install ceiling exhaust fan that I had already purchased in new bathroom remodel, including duct-work through the roof and roof patch.

Response from Environmental Systems Associates Inc
Our supervisor visited the job and discussed with (Member name removed) and the job electrician the installation of a bath fan and the relocation of two air-conditioning outlets. We agreed that the electrician would install and wire the bath fan and we would vent the fan to a roof jack we installed through the roof and relocate the air-conditioning outlets for $550.00. When an installation team came the following day to perform the work, they found that the bath fan housing had not been installed or wired. In the interest of time efficiency, they installed the housing and vented it to the roof jack they also installed. There was some confusion about the location of the fan, but the installer communicated to (Member name removed) that it was her home and he would make sure that it was installed where she wanted it. He did point out to her that while relocating the two air-conditioning vents, that the inside liner of the ducts was of a permeable mesh material and not up to current standards. She readily agreed to have both of the ducts replaced, rather than simply relocated, for an additional $100.00. After all the work was complete, in preparing the final bill with (Member name removed), the installer noted that the supervisor had a note in his paperwork that had a price of $200.00 for installing the fan but he did not charge her for that. Unfortunately the bill was not as clear as it could have been and did not break down the costs between the venting of the fan and the replacement of the air-conditioning ductwork and simply listed the total of $650.00. We should have done a better job of that. In following up on the telephone with (Member name removed), I confirmed that she agreed to the additional charge for the ductwork and that the fan was located exactly where she wanted it and apologized for any communication shortcomings on our part. She shared with me that she had not seen the review that (Member name removed) had posted but would have him call me if he had any questions. It has been a week, and I have not received a call from (Member name removed). Environmental Systems Associates will continue to strive to do what we say we will do, when we say will do it and for no more than we said we would it would cost. Respectfully, Richard Dean, President Environmental Systems Associates

Paul arrived on schedule and performed the work in a professional and friendly manner. He suggested a good filter to use in our heat pump and provided a tip on how to make the changing of the filter go more easily, which we appreciated. He finished in a timely manner and did a great job. We have used Environmental Systems for 28 years to provide and maintain our heat pump systems and have always received excellent service and have never had a heat pump issue.
Description of Work: Paul came to perform the semi annual maintenance and operational check on our heat pump unit.

I phoned this morning and they were able to come today. The technician arrived on time and had a coupon to reduce wiith the price. The technician (Tarrance M.) was friendly and helpful. He changed the filters in the air handlers and the humidifier and showed me how to do them and how often I should do them. The price I paid was for an annual contract and for a pair of humidifier filters. The contract includes another service call in the fall. I was very pleased with the service. Tarrance then went above and beyond, because while he was here, Fed-ex put some heavy boxes in front of my door and I was blocked in the house. Before he left, he helped me get the boxes inside so I wasn't trapped in the house. I LOVE dealing with this company.

A year ago, I had ESA install a new Carrier Infinity series heat pump. While it was expensive, it started paying for itself almost immediately with a significant drop in my electric bill. The house was far more comfortable both in winter and summer. The installation was terrific; the crew worked quickly and neatly. I also signed up for the maintenance contract. ESA notifies me when it's due, and I've gotten a quick appointment whenever I call. Today was the second visit and the service specialist, Paul G., was on time and finished quickly, even considering that I had lots of questions. ESA specialists have always given me good advice about other energy saving things. There has never been a hard sell to complete any additional projects. A great company.
Description of Work: This was a visit for my maintenance contract. Paul G. checked the thermostat settings, changed the filter, inspected the humidifier pad and inspected the entire system (inside and out).

I was very impressed with the crew that came out to replace our HVAC system. They were professional, quick and cleaned up everything. The HVAC supervisor also came out and explained things about the system and how to make small changes to improve our homes overall energy efficiency. They did not try to oversize my system (unlike the company that had replaced my A/C two years earlier.) The price seemed reasonable compared to online searches, although I did not get comparable quotes. I am happy with the new unit and would recommend them to anyone looking for a new system.
Description of Work: Contacted ESA due to a problem with my furnace - it was intermittently shutting down. Technician came out and diagnosed problem as timer switch. ESA provided an estimate, ordered the part, and scheduled a follow up appointment. After installing new switch, technician found that it was not resolving the problem. He then contacted a supervisor and went through everything to figure out why it was not working right and came to the conclusion that there was a problem in the heat exchanger. Our HVAC system was old and having problems, so we were not surprised. Rather than spending a large chunk of money on trying to fix the old system, we opted to replace it. All of this happened right before Christmas, so I was certainly dreading the possibility of being without heat during the holidays. However, they had access to a replacement Carrier system from a local vendor and we're able to come back within two days to replace the system.

The Estimate: I had several "A"-rated Angie's List referrals come out to give me an estimate and ESA won across the board, beginning with the fact that it's the actual owner who comes to your house to give you the estimate. The company was actually recommended to me by a family member, and the owner, Richard Dean, remembered him by name when I mentioned it. Small customer service details like that speak a lot about a company. He was extremely knowledgeable in every facet of the process, from the sort of system that would be best for the house, the various energy credit rebates and tax credits, and the work that would be done. He was prompt with sending the proposal within an hour of meeting. The best part is they used EMAIL and ONLINE FORMS! You'd think it was the 1990s the way all the other companies are still bumbling around with cluttered 3-ring binders full of pricing sheets and highlighted numbers and scribbled proposals they put together in their worktruck in my driveway. The Price: ESA had the most aggressive price. Everyone else had higher prices by $500-1000, and those were for lesser systems. I have to think they were likely quickly rounding to closest thousandth while scribbling out a proposal at my kitchen table (or in my driveway.) This company actually seems to research and think about what they're sending you. In the end, I was between two companies that were similar in price/system, but I went with ESA because of the overall professionalism and responsiveness. The Work: We're in the dead of winter right now, so this entire process was very expedited. The estimate was done on Wednesday, and the work was done on Monday in about four and a half hours. The crew was awesome. All of the guys were polite, easy to ask questions, well-spoken, friendly, and didn't creep me out. They did a beautiful job inside and out. Only one small problem happened when a breaker had to be changed in my circuit box for the new system. After the crew left and the new system was humming along, I noticed the breaker was buzzing when the system started up. I called ESA and they sent some guys back within fifteen minutes. (Again, I suspect this is due more to the dead of winter/slow work day) but I was impressed that they were so responsive. The crew had went out of their way to assure me to ask any questions and raise any concerns, so I felt totally comfortable asking them about the buzzing. They fixed it and re-assured me again to not hesitate in calling for anything else. One of the main things you hope for is that a company is going to be responsive, honest, and good beyond the point where they're trying to sell you something, and so far, ESA seems to be those things. We hope to have positive experiences with them for years to come.

We have used ESA for regular maintenance of our HVAC for years under their service agreement. Twice a year they come and make sure our systems are working properly. They have also done several major repairs, including the replacement of a defective furnace. Frank H. did the servicing on 12/20/12 and like all the ESA service people, he patiently took the time to explain what he was doing and why. He showed me how to work the humidifier controls and change the filter. He also found a blockage in one of our vents, which he removed. Altogether a competent professional service visit.

The individuals who came were on time and extremely professional. The looked over my HVAC and were able to replace the humidifier and the AC filters. I had been having trouble finding replacements and had them available for me. I purchased the Fall/Spring package and I'm looking forward to having them tune-up my HVAC system in the spring. They also walked me through how to program my thermostat and set my humidfier to the factory recommended settings. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely hire them again.

First, I rated Price as Fair because I don't know how what I paid compares with other companies doing similar work. I did not get other estimates before hiring Environmental Systems Associates. I will say that the invoice presented to me exactly matched the charge that had been quoted to me by their business office. The Service Specialist Steve arrived promptly on time and went right to work. He was courteous and respectul of my carpeting (preferring to walk around the buiilding outside to my patio rather than walking through my condo). He was neatly and cleanly dressed and presented a professional appearance. He replaced my heat pump compressor (which had previously been diagnosed as the reason I had no heating). He kept me informed of progess as he worked. He tested the system and it was working fine. He worked efficiently and finished the whole job in a little over 2 hours. Overall a good experience for me. I would definitely call upon this company for any future HVAC needs.

The Environmental Systems technician arrived at the scheduled time and correctly diagnosed a failed compressor which was covered under a parts only warranty. I was told the office would contact me with an estimate of repair costs. I was promptly contacted and provided a repair estimate that appeared excessively expensive. I asked for a break down of the costs and reviewed them with the person who called me. My judgement was questioned when I inquired about the excessive prices (sir - do you know how much it costs to ship a 100 lb compressor across the country?). I indicated I would have to obtain competitive bids to validate the cost. I ultimately had the repair competently performed for over $1K less by another Angies List "A" rated contractor.

Frank was on time, professional, and efficient. I am really glad that he discovered and removed the unnecessary insulation that could have resulted in a short in the system. If this had happened I would have been without heat until it could have been fixed. It is alert and thorough maintenance like this that makes the Environmental Systems Associates people who have serviced my heat pump stand out. He also talked to me about some safety issues if I use the fireplace that I have here. I highly recommend this company and their staff. My Fall maintenance checkup was originally scheduled for October 29, which turned out to be the date of Hurricane Sandy's arrival on the east coast. Although Maryland was spared the severe damage that New York and New Jersey sustained, the rain and high winds were still hazardous and required a scheduling change. Environmental Systems Associates had their staff call on Sunday those of us who were scheduled for that Monday to try to reschedule. They had many dates and times but it was my schedule was the thing that delayed my checkup this long. I appreciate how they were so helpful to accommodate my unusual work schedule.
Description of Work: I have an annual maintenance contract with Environmental systems for spring and fall checks of my heating and A/C systems. I purchase this contract each spring (May/June) and the annual amount the past few years has been $140. Today was my Fall check so I did not spend anything today. The technician who came today is one of the lead installers at Environmental Systems Associates, Frank H. He was extremely thorough, which is consistent will my previous experiences. He thoroughly checked the interior and exterior system, cleaned the trap, answered some questions I had related to operation of the fan. He also removed a piece of insulation that was not necessary for my system because of its location in my home. This particular piece of insulation is aluminum-clad and can get loose over time, creating a potential for a short in the system if the aluminum touches a copper lead nearby.

He also wrote down the date on the air filter and humidifier pad and the model number of the humidifier pad for my reference. (wonderful!) He also showed me how to set the right percentage of humidity and why. He answered all of my questions without difficult technical words. I really appreciated his work.

See above--heat was not working, but the technician turned a second knob and got it going. He explained how the HVAC system works and why both knobs needed to be adjusted. Because the technician who came out last summer and turned the knobs off neglected to give me clear instructions, I was not chatrged for the second visit.
Description of Work: Last summer a technician came out and serviced my HVAC unit and, at the time, he adjusted a knob on the unit. He told me that it would run more efficiently if I turned that knob off in the summer and back on in the winter. Before I turned on my heat this weekend, I turned the knob as he had shown me, but the air that came out was cold. I called the company on Monday morning and they had a technician out by 1:00 the same day. He turned a second knob on the unit and the hot air began to flow again. Because the first technician had neglected to give me complete instructions, I was not charged for the visit today. I have relied on Environmental Systems several times over the years, and have always found everyone connected with the company--from the scheduler to the technician--to be polite, friendly and thoroughly professional. I would highly recommend them.

Excellent experience. They were able to perform the work a few days earlier than expected. This was greatly appreciated considering the hot summer we had. My husband noticed a leaking A/C pipe in the basement. We called this company with which we have a maintenance contract and they sent a technician over. He checked the whole system, our upstairs shower, the washing machine and other possible water sources but found nothing. He did notice that the dryer vent pipe was next to this particular "leaky" A/C pipe and thought that maybe this could be a cause for condensation which would explain why the leak occurred only when the dryer was on. He followed the dryer vent pipe to the outside and found a nest on top of the cap. He took the cap off and found a lot of lint accumulated there. He flushed it with a hose and replaced the cap. He didn't have to do all this but I was very grateful that he had solved the mystery of the leaky A/C pipe. A couple of weeks later we called another company to have the dryer vent inspected and flushed. Problem solved!

TIM, THE SERVICE SPECIALIST, ARRIVE ON TIME AND WAS MORE THAN HELPFUL. IN THE PROCESS OF CHECKING THE INSIDE UNIT OF THE HEAT PUMP HE NOTICED THAT THE CONDENSATE LINE FROM THE CONDENSATE PUMP WAS CHRIMPED, WHICH OCCURRED WHEN I MOVED A DOOR STORED BESIDE IT AND DID NOT REALIZE THE LINE HAD BEEN JEOPARDIZED. WHILE NOT PART OF HIS SERVICE CALL, HE UNCRIMPED THE LINE AND ATTACHED IT TO THE WALL SO THAT IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. THIS SAVED ME A FLOODED BASEMENT. THEN, HE SHOWED ME A TRICK WITH THE FILTER, THAT CONSTANTLY CAUSED PROBLEMS WHEN CHANGING IT ONCE A MONTH. HE SHOWED ME HOW TO TAKE A FILTER LONGER THAN THE OPENING SLOT AND BEND THE OUTSIDE PIECE DOWN AND THEN ATTACH THE COVER TO THE SLOT. THIS WILL KEEP THE FAN FROM SUCKING THE FILTER DOWN AND MAKING IT HARD TO REMOVE. THEN, HE POINTED OUT THAT I HAD BAFFLES IN MY VENTING SYSTEM WHICH I NEVER SAW. HE SHOWED ME HOW TO MOVE THEM AND REDIRECT AIR TO THE UPPER FLOORS IN THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS, AND TO THE LOWER FLOORS IN THE WINTER. THESE WERE THINGS HE DID NOT HAVE TO DO. I THINK TIM IS A "PEOPLE PERSON" WHICH IS A GOOD THING FOR A SKILLED SERVICE REP TO BE. HE IS AN ASSET TO AN ALREADY GOOD COMPANY, AND I HOPE THEY PAY HIM WELL AND KEEP HIM AS PART OF THE TEAM.
