This was the second time I used Meyer Electric and I am going to have them complete a third project. While trying to diagnose which wires were incorrectly in my B-vent chase, my brother removed some drywall and found that my dryer line had not been installed to code and was damaged. This was a fire hazard. My brother exchanged several emails and photos with Walt, who guided him on drywall to remove to make the job easier and less costly. There was a particular spot where Walt said it was very important to make a hole, because as Walt suspected, the renovation company from which I bought the house did not follow a logical path. Walt's associate, Ben, arrived at my home promptly at 7 am as scheduled. Ben is very professional and diligent. He replaced the dryer line according to code. Ben also helped us solve the problem of getting wires out of my B-vent chase. He went into the attic and re-routed wires so that they were out of the chase in the attic. He then provided my brother with a plan for removing them from the chase in the basement, because he had to go to the next job. My brother followed his directions and it worked perfectly. There was no need to drill through the house or run additional wiring outside as my brother feared. I prefer dealing with smaller companies like Meyer Electric. There seems to be better quality control, the prices are reasonable, and there is more attention to detail. My brother called Walt today about another project that needs to be done, and he got back to him promptly with a plan and price. My only complaint is that he doesn't take credit card payments. I think having this payment option is important.

Walt Meyer was wonderful to work with. He took the time to do a thorough estimate that I was able to use to compare with other estimates. His was the most reasonable and the clearest. He answered my questions, made suggestions for problem areas and adjusted the contract as I made additions. He was patient and prompt in every interaction. Walt and another electrician, Ben arrived early to complete the job (6:50am). They were thorough, they gently moved what needed to be moved, they cleaned and swept when they were done. I have to say that I was most impressed by two things they did. They took the time to answer my questions which may have seemed simple but I honestly understood the first time they explained things. The other thing was that while on the job they discovered a pipe that made an short job a long one because they had to work around the pipe. I appreciate the fact that they didn't give up and problem solved to make it work. You don't get that kind of service from someone who doesn't care about doing the right job the first time.
Description of Work: We had several outlets replaced (some GFCI some not), a microwave put on a separate circuit (microwave is upstairs, circuit breaker is in the basement) 6 new over head recessed lighting installed in several places and old fixtures replaced.

My experience with Meyer Electrical Services Inc. (Walt Meyer, specifically) has been awful. I hired him to do a "heavy up" - to replace our 100 amp panel with a 200 amp panel. In the course of doing so, he discovered that the capacity for the clothes dryer line was for only 15 amps but it needed to be 30 so I hired him to come back out and fix it. Then the inspector came out and reviewed Walt's work and concluded that, for separate reasons, both the heavy up and the dryer line fix were not code compliant so they both flunked inspection. This meant that the new panel could not be connected to the grid until the work problems were fixed and passed inspection. This caused me to be a bit annoyed but not overly worried because I figured that Walt would come out and take care of it and it wouldn't be a big deal. That's when I discovered some unpleasant things about Walt. Walt called me after the inspector gave him the news and immediately let me know that it would cost me extra money for him to come back out and bring the jobs up to code. Thereafter, we exchanged a series of emails in which Walt, at various times, blamed: me, the inspector, my new dryer and/or Home Depot (where I bought my new dryer) for failing the inspection. In communicating with Walt, I was never really sure if he was deliberately misunderstanding the situation, or, if he just didn't get it. My expectation had been simple: that he would do work that was code compliant. But he challenged me to find where in my contract it said that his work had to be code compliant. I really couldn't believe he was making this argument or even wasting his time making it. Unfortunately, in the case of the dryer line, I had just emailed my request that he come back out to fix it. And he had emailed me back with the cost and date/time he would do it, and that was it. There was actually no formal contact but I had trusted him in good faith to do it correctly. Eventually, I asked Walt point-blank why he didn't tell me (ahead of time) that the dryer line would require a $110 permit (an unpleasant surprise) and whether he had been aware that current code requires you replace a three prong outlet with a four (which is one of the reasons the inspector had cited the work as not code compliant). His answer: He didn't know about either the permit requirement or the current code. Which is incredible. And pitiful. And worst of all is that he feels no embarrassment, or sense of obligation, towards his customer that compels him to try to make things right. I'll have to hire another electrician to clean up his mess. When I first met Walt he seemed like a nice guy and I like hiring small contractors. But beware, he has proved himself to be unreliable, untrustworthy, irresponsible and (somewhat) dishonest. Almost 1 month after the heavy up and my new panel is still not connected to the grid. When I relayed to Walt that I planned to write a review of his work and present readers with the facts he wrote back: "I don't take threats lightly." I'm not really sure what he means by this but, it should go without saying, I really regret meeting this guy.

Response from Meyer Electrical Services Inc
[member name removed]. First of all, we appreciate your business and your time. We do recognize your frustration with disapproved inspection report due to incorrect dryer installation. As I was trying to communicate to you, we did not install your dryer nor did we install the cord; therefore, we cannot be liable for the work done by others (Home Depot in your case). Moreover as you were originally aware of, we discovered your undersize dryer branch wiring in the midst of the "Heavy-Up" process. Hence the cost of the replacing the undersized receptacle and the cord was not reflected in the contract. You disagreed with the suggested cost of the corrective matter stating that it should be a part of the "heavy-up" cost, while it was not. Please keep in mind that nowhere in the National Electrical Code can it be found that an upgrade of the outlet pertaining to your situation and an obtaining a permit for this type of service is a mandatory. Indeed, it is an optional upgrade done at a customer or an electrician discretion although we realize that an electrical inspector approves the job and in no way do we try to question his interpretation of the NEC. Apparently, it is impossible to predict an outcome of the electrical inspection in terms of an inspector's interpretation of the electrical code and the fact that an electrical inspector is the authority having jurisdiction (Article 100 of the National Electrical Code), which assumes that any electrical inspector can place his own judgment against a matter, and we, electrical contractors, have no control over it other than the scope of work mutually agreed and affirmed on the contract. Moreover, it is stated on the contract that "Additional repairs, corrections or upgrades... identified by the local electrical inspector shall be charged separately IF required". Your denial to cover additional charges resulted after the inspection did not comply with the terms of the contract; therefore, no additional service was provided. To reassure you, I am Licensed Master electrician with many years experience for the similar types of projects. All my completed work was/is in compliance with the current electrical code and I am confident in my own professionalism. Finally, please recall, I was trying to explain to you through emails that the inspector failed the "Heavy-Up" part of the project solely due to missing few staples above the electrical panel (very minor fix comparing to the entire "heavy-up" process and per the NEC does not possess a potential hazard). Needless to say you were aware of that fact that the space constraint disallowed us to swing a hammer in to space and place those missing staples. As we discussed, once you allow us, we guarantee that we will be back to fix it. We hope everything stated above sufficiently explains our actions. Thank you.

Walt was on time, efficient and extremely conscientious. We had also scheduled a full HVAC installation for the same day and he made sure to coordinate with the other workers to get them electricity where and when they needed it. He and his helper spent hours identifying each circuit and marking the new breaker box accordingly. They also made sure that every outlet, light and appliance in the house worked properly. They cleaned up after themselves and made sure to explain everything they had done before leaving for the day. Walt also coordinated the inspection with the county which passed perfectly. I can`t remember a contractor that I`ve hired that went more smoothly. His price was fair and his attention to detail was admirable. I would definitely recommend him to anyone needing any electrical work.

Contacted company from a referral from my grandfather, whom had the same service and stated he was pleased with the work. Company has an old school work ethic, meaning what they say they will do with no BS. They spent about half a day installing the new equipment and they scheduled the inspector to come within days later. Everything checked out and they sent me an email as to when the pepco work order was submitted and completed. Job well done!

I wanted to replace the two old-style dimmer switches in our kitchen with newer on/off switches. After opening the switch box and discovering the bird's nest and spiderweb of wiring "created" by the previous owner, it was time to call a professional. Performed a quick search on Angie's, selected Meyer's Electric, sent Walt and email w/pics. He quickly responded by email; a quick phone call generated what I was asking for/what was expected from them, as well as an appointment. On the day of the appt, we confirmed the time (I was impressed that we were sticking to the scheduled time, given the past several days of weather difficulties). "Ben" was prompt, friendly, knowledgeable and proficient, and quickly accomplished the work as described in the "What did the provider do" section (above). Price was straightforward and fair- service call (standard) and supplies reasonable. Workspace was left clean and tidy. We were highly pleased with the experience.

The job was very well done. Meyer arranged for the county permit and inspection. Meyer left the job site spotless. They had said they be here either that Friday or Monday. (It would have been considerate had they called Friday morning to say that, due to the rain, they would not come -- something I guessed but I would have appreciated the confirmation.) When they came Monday, they were right on time -- as they always are -- and finished the job more quickly than I expected. Before, the circuit breaker was a mess of wires and the grounding was inadequate. When they left, the circuit breaker looks so neat and organized, and labeled. Their speed was highly appreciated because it meant my power -- and heat -- were off for a limited time. That speed speaks to their skill and thoroughness. Of course the work passed the county inspection. Meyer Electrical was recommended to me by a close friend and I highly recommend it to others. It's the company I'll use for all my electrical work.
Description of Work: The main electrical service line into the house was nearly 60 years old and the insulation was flaking off. The power company strongly recommended replacement. Upon inspection Meyer Electrical recommended the circuit breaker and grounding also needed replacement, a project I'd wondered about. Meyer had done two other jobs for me and I was very pleased with its services, so accepted their proposal immediately. The price they proposed seemed very reasonable and was far less than I expected, so I didn't get bids from any other company.

Then follow up service to (try to) resolve a seemingly unrelated over-voltage issue on two hallway lights. Walt was professional and responsive at the initial meeting and with respect to the circuit panel. Unfortunately, when I tried to communicate with him about the follow up issue (that appeared after the panel was replaced, but does not seem to have been related to the work done on the panel), he was oddly snippy and surly. Maybe service calls like that aren't really his thing, but if so, I wish he'd just told me that. He did send the electrician back out for the service call, but, frankly, the quality of the work was, "Meh." I'll be using someone else for follow up work on the issue.

Walt came on time for the estimate and provided me with a written quote. I decided to go with Walt for several reasons: his quote was the lowest of 3 quotes, Walt was professional and instilled confidence in me that he would do good work, and Walt assured me that he would be the one doing the actual work. On the day of service, Walt arrived on time again, and we went over the work to be performed. He was accommodating to my requests as long as they were in line with code. Overall, I was pleased with the results. Walt and his assistant finished everything in 5-6 hours, and the house was left as clean as it was before the work. I have DC inspectors coming next week, but I'm sure it will pass. Bottom line: Very good professional service and competitive prices. I would call him again in the future.

The overhead lights in our living room suddenly wouldn't turn off and the light switch cover was getting warm. I started trying to get an electrician during the day. After calling many companies on Angies List, I found Meyer Electrical Services. Walt fit us in by making us the first appointment the next morning. The technician, Ben, arrived on time. He was efficient and professional, and was able to finish t he job in under an hour. The cost basis is by the job, not by the hour. I highly recommend Meyer Electrical Services because of their responsiveness to the customer's need, professionalism of the technician and moderate pricing.

When turning on my garbage disposal, I saw flashing light behind the switch. That is why I called Meyer Electric. Before I joined Angie's List, my brother had done some research for me and found Walt Meyer. He was able to send one of his electricians to my home the next day who replaced the switch. He called ahead and arrived within the window of time provided, which I really appreciate. The renovation company from which I bought my house cut some corners, so the electric has always worried me. My brother suggested having the electrician look at my electrical panel. The electrician did this, double checking that everything was screwed in tightly. He was very patient, explaining how everything was balanced properly, etc. Usually, it costs at least $200 in DC to have any contractor come to your house Thought this was a very reasonable price. Would definitely use this company again and recommend them to others.

My first contact with Mr Meyer was when I had just moved and needed an electrician to find the cause of an electric problem at my new house. Mr Meyer came in person with a helper and they not only were able to sort the problem but came the same day that I called. I was so impressed with his professionalism that I inquired about the generator install that we had in mind for later. A few months later, we went ahead with the generator install and found Mr Meyer to be very experienced and knowledgeable at installing whole house gas generators. He guided us through the various steps of installation, which took place in a timely and professional manner. When he explained how the machine works. instructions were very clear. There was no surprise and the whole install was very professionally done.

We used Meyer Electrical Services twice in the past two months. The first time, Walt came out very promptly to replace a breaker for our HVAC, with only a few hours notice. The air condition maintenance person had identified a faulty breaker as the reason why the 1st floor HVAC stopped working but could not replace it himself. I called Walt Meyer who came out personally the same day to fix it. I believe the cost for that was around $100. The HVAC has been working fine since then. I used the occasion to ask him whether he could install a ceiling fan, which he had purchased on Amazon, to the cathedral ceiling in our living room. He could not do it the same day b/c of other appointments and also because he needed to bring a tall ladder for the job. But he gave me an estimate on the day, which he pretty much kept to exactly, and we scheduled something for a couple of weeks later. In order to mount the ceiling fan, he came with a second person and both worked for about 40 min. The total was around $230. The wiring (fan and ceiling lights) was all crossed, which we knew beforehand because with the old fan it was impossible to operate lights and fan separately. We were worried that it would be a more complicated process but he was able to fix it relatively quickly. Because we had purchased a modern 'industrial style' stainless steel fan on Amazon, it came with a rather 'industrial looking' (i.e.clunky) wall mounted speed control, Walt advised against using this and rather suggested we purchase a speed control which can be integrated with the existing light switches. He provided me with instructions and recommended a dealer nearby. When the dealer could not identify the right part however, probably because I did not write all necessary info down correectly, I asked Walt for help again and he promptly ordered the part for us, which we can now pick up at the store. Walt advised that adding the speed control could be done by a handyman with some electric skills and that we would not need to pay for him to come out only for this again. Handyman will come in a few days to fix several things around the house so I cannot comment on how adding the speed control will work out yet. For now, lights and fan can be operated separately, which is a huge improvement, and the fan is mounted well. Because of the missing speed control however, it currently only operates on the highest speed. We were very pleased with Walt's services and responsiveness.

We were worried something was unsafe with the wiring, so we turned off that circuit and called Meyer Electrical. They had someone at our house within 2 hours, as promised. Their technician stayed in contact with the home office as he diagnosed the problem. Even though he was here over 3 hours, our bill was just over $250. We were thrilled with the professionalism, the car he took on preventing messes and cleaning up, and the value for his services. OUTSTANDING!! Definitely our electrician anytime we need someone!!
