Angie?s list, we called K&K to request an estimate for refinishing the
hardwood floors in the rundown house ?with good bones? we had just purchased.
One of the brothers, Rudy, came out to give us an estimate. He saw that the house interior was also
in need of painting and volunteered that K&K does professional painting as
well. He showed us photos on his tablet of previous jobs, and they looked
great. We ended up hiring them to paint all of the downstairs rooms and to
refinish the wood floors throughout the entire house. We are glad we did!
Different crews handled the painting versus refinishing.
During the ~three weeks required for this job, we stopped by the house once or
twice most days at random times, unannounced, and they were always hard at
work. They were also very pleasant to interact with, offering great advice,
including suggestions for how some finish work could be improved, e.g. framing
the wood floors around the two fireplaces, and installing wood rather than
metal grates over the floor vents. They showed us options for installing a
custom oak mantle over the fireplace, to match the floors, and we added that to
the job as well. They mentioned that they really like working with designers,
and they clearly enjoyed passing on tips that they have picked up in the course
of previous projects.
While working on one wall, they found severe, ancient (not
active) termite damage. The wood studs were crumbling and could be broken apart
by hand. So ? the job grew significantly, as is typical with older houses. One crew
member ended up completely rebuilding an entire back wall of the house
(replacing the sill on the foundation, replacing some floor joists, replacing
all the studs, removing and reinstalling the sheathing and siding, and finally removing
and reinstalling a large window). Communication with us during this entire process
was exemplary, and was primarily through the two brothers and a senior employee.
The crew was mostly quiet workers who were quite pleasant and very focused on
doing their jobs. Crews handling different tasks were scheduled efficiently, with
the brothers acting as general contractors as well as working on specific tasks
(especially the more detailed woodworking) themselves.
We couldn't be happier with the final product and are amazed
at how much was accomplished in under three weeks. This was a big job. The work
was top-notch, characterized by an impressive amount of prep work and excellent
finish work. Their prices are reasonable. We were pleased
and sometimes a bit amused as we noticed how extremely detail-oriented this
team is. One example was when we noticed a small, ¾ in section of baseboard
between two doorframes and behind a door; we would not have worried about it,
but they actually installed a ¾ inch section of quarter-round molding along
that baseboard. They patched areas of our damaged wood floors, beautifully
matching the tone and darkness of the new and old oak boards. At the end of the
job, they thoroughly cleaned the work areas to remove all the sawdust they had
created. On the final day, a couple of them came through and did the final
detail work, touching up those little spots where things were not quite
perfect.
Would we hire them again? In a heartbeat! In fact, we have
asked them for an estimate to repair our fence and also to regrade and reinstall
a flagstone patio in the back yard, once our landscape architect has drawn up a
plan.
We highly recommend K&K flooring. Don?t let Rudy and
Jimmy?s youthful appearance worry you ? they are experienced pros and they clearly
have a well-run business. We look forward to working with them on future
projects.
"Team Kustom Floors Really enjoyed working with you. Thank you for the opportunity."
"Team Kustom Floors really enjoyed working with you. Thank you for the opportunity."
These guys are true craftsmen. They are meticulous. They obviously take great pride in their work. I could not recommend them any higher.
Also, they clearly understood what to do with OLD floors. That wasn't the case with everyone I spoke with.
They were a little more expensive than other options, but still very reasonable, and I'm glad I paid a little extra, given the excellent results.
After going back and forth with Rudy over what kind of wood flooring I wanted for my den and living room, we made the order and 3 weeks later I had Rudy's brother leading a crew of guys taking out my old red oak floor and installing brand new quartersawn white oak. First they had to level off a part of the living room that used to be a porch, which some carpenters handled first. That part of the job was by the hour. After that, everything went smooth and the floors turned out just beautiful, with a Rubio Monocoat natural finish. The trim they put around my fireplace was great, and Rudy's brother- Jimmy- couldn't have been more competent and professional. They were done in 4 days, with 1.5 days for the stain to set. They started Monday morning and everything was move-in ready by Saturday. Throughout the whole thing, Rudy would check in with me, provide some options for this or that, explain some processes, and most importantly, seemed genuinely to care that I was happy with how it was looking and inspired real confidence that it was all going to look great.
I had a small hiccup with my radiators, which had to be removed and turned out to be a larger project than I envisioned. When I became dissatisfied with the plumber I had hired to take them out and then reinstall, it was Rudy who helped me find a real gem of a plumber to fix it all at low cost, and Rudy even took the additional cost I incurred from the debacle into account when settling my final invoice. That was truly appreciated, especially to a recently furloughed government worker. Rudy, Jimmy and their crew are real pros: honest, knowledgeable and more invested in their business than any of the other companies I brought in to bid for the job. I would recommend to anyone considering new floors to hire KK with confidence.
We would highly recommend KK Hardwood Floors to anyone needing to have their floors repaired and refinished.
I strongly recommend Rudy for refinishing wood floors. I hired him and his team to refinish our heart of pine floors from 1915, which had at least 20 broken boards or boards with holes, and an unsightly staircase full of nails.
Rudy sourced pine replacement boards that look identical to our wood floor and repaired the holes so that you?d never have known they were there, he sanded and refinished the floors expertly, and he filled the nail holes on the staircase making them virtually unnoticeable. He had a lot of suggestions that helped us figure out how to get the floors in great shape, including adding shoe molding and fixing a large hump in the floor so that it was flat afterwards.
Rudy is a true craftsman who pays careful attention to detail and takes enormous pride in his work. This shows in the final product, which is as near to perfection as you can get, and at a totally reasonable price. He?s also extremely personable and I found him to be quite responsive to phone calls and emails.
Painting
I give Rudy the highest marks for painting. Rudy fixed some sloppy work that another painter had done, including repairing some damage that the other painter had done to our newly refinished floors. I should have hired him and his team in the first place, and I ultimately lost time and money by not doing so. I had no excuse because his price was fair. If you can, hire Rudy for painting.
Our meeting was on a Friday, on Monday I had a contract and wood samples to approve, and on Tuesday the flooring materials were delivered to my house. A team of installers arrived on Wednesday and removed all the old tile and linoleum flooring in the morning. By that afternoon, they began to install the floors. They finished the whole job on the following day.
I could not be more pleased with the finished floors. Rudy and KK Hardwood are the best. They kept my kitchen renovation on schedule and within a reasonable budget while delivering top-quality craftsmanship. I am happy to recommend them with a highest rating.
Sensing an opportunity to correct these items but not knowing what to do, we turned to Angie's List. Thank you Angie! We found KK Hardwood Floors and in talking with them discovered that they not only specialize in floors -- and they are very good -- but they also paint, provide home repairs, improvements, remodeling, etc. When I considered the pain of working with multiple contractors, it became clear that having it all coordinated under a single person would be considerably easier. So I called and Rudy Arredondo came with a another team member to our new home. They carefully looked through all of the rooms, took measurements, and shared a portfolio of their work all of which was very well done. Rudy then took us through the flooring options in terms of refinishing, replacing sections, potential repair work, as well as the various possible stain and finishing choices. We then talked about the painting work, general needs, and overall schedule. The team was never pushy, only provided information as well as options. While talking with the guys, there were aspects of the job that we did not even consider such as replacing the ceiling in our family room, refinishing handrails, or sanding the pebble finish from the powder room in order to provide a smooth more polished look and feel. We were grateful for the advice. At the end of the visit, they provided an estimate, expected time to completion, web sites on the stains/finishes, and a requirements on the amount of paint needed. We provided the paint, they provided the expertise. One stop shop -- nice.
The company showed up on time and immediately got to work prepping the house for painting. We had them remove the existing shoe rail if it were installed as well as the doorway thresholds. Once we removed the doorway thresholds, it was clear that many spots would require repair either from damage or missing pieces which were expertly feathered into the existing floor. Then the tiled ceiling came down and a new one went up in its place. The work was meticulously completed and it changed the entire feeling in the room to a more finished appearance. Everything was painted and looked fantastic. The painting and flooring teams seamlessly switched and the floors were prepped for sanding. We decided to go with a nearly clear stain and commercial finish that's tough enough for our pets, little girl (and toys), as well as heels. The satin finish is astounding and the newly installed shoe rail looks fantastic. Even better yet, the out-of-place juxtaposition of the old and new floors is gone. It looks uniform as though they were installed at the same time. The whole house feels lighter, more airy, with a warm inviting feeling. It's a really huge improvement.
The guys finished on time with a few days left for everything to dry and cure. Rudy asked if we'd like the handrails installed with the old hardware or would we prefer to pick up new hardware. We decided that we would pick up new so that everything looked as good as could be. Rudy said, no problem. Just give us a call and we'll come back and install them for you with the new hardware. Fast forward 4 weeks after we moved in, got things settled and actually had time to pick up the hardware. We called Rudy and true to his word, they came back to install the refinished handrails. After they were on the walls, the guys touched up the paint to look perfect again. And not only did they touch up the paint around the handrails, they touched up several marks on the walls generously left by the movers. Now that's attention to detail which is critical, serious follow-through, and going the extra mile.
I struggled on Angie's List to find a floor company who could deal with the quirks of an old house. I thought there was a subfloor because, under the carpet, it was clear there were some issues with leveling and creaking.
Rudy came from KK Hardwood Floors right on time. He asked if we were serious about doing the work before he peeled back a corner of the carpet to reveal hardwood floors underneath. Oak stairs and pine floors in the bedrooms. The floors were covered with paint drips and very old and worn out finish/stain.
The workers arrived exactly on time and immediately got to work removing the carpet. They worked from 8am until 6:30pm as they began preparing the floors for sanding and sealing. They had to replace about 25 planks due to splits and chips. They used reclaimed wood that fits perfectly with the existing flooring. We learned there is no subfloor in our home, rather, the unlevel parts of the floor were actually due to joists . KK Hardwood removed the existing planks and added additional support to bring things level again. You cannot tell where that work occurred unless you knew where the problem was before.
The porch on this floor is what is called a sleep-out porch. From the days before air conditioning these porches were designed to have windows on three of four walls which were opened on hot nights to provide the coolest sleeping conditions possible. There were wood floors underneath a layer of some kind of plastic or rubber waterproofing. KK Hardwood hand scraped that floor to reveal beautiful wood underneath. They then sanded the porch floor twice to remove the old layer of waterproofing.
We now have an entire floor of gorgeous original flooring in our beautiful 90-year-old home. We couldn't be happier with the results.
Not only was the work professional and efficient, they were very neat. Imagine the dust from sanding an entire floor of your home. They blocked the bottom of the staircase with plastic to minimized dust. A good thorough vacuum job on the main floor and there are no remaining signs of the major work just completed.
The carpeting was a minor part of our job. We wanted plain durable carpet for a heavily trafficked area of the home. We selected the carpet, they waited for us to recover from the wood flooring work and then came for one day to install the carpet beautifully.
This was a big job and our home was in chaos for about a week but the results could not be more beautiful. We are thrilled with the results.
The job was pretty simple--I provided the paint, they did the work. I only asked them to paint the walls, not the trim, which had recently been painted. The crew showed up as agreed and was able to complete the work in one day. They did a very nice job and were tidy about the work (I did find a little paint on the shower curtain in the bathroom, where they must have cleaned their brushes, but not bad).
With such a small and straightforward piece of work it's hard to say too much--it was a good experience and I would hire them again for similar work!
The crew arrived right on time on the agreed-upon date and ready to get to work. As is sometimes the case with this kind of work, there was a slight language barrier with the workmen, but we seemed to be able to make ourselves understood. (Rudy was not on the job site--his brother Jimmy ran the crew.)
The work on the floors took one day longer than expected, but that is because the finish on prefinished floors is very hard to sand off. The crew did a beautiful job--no marks from the sander whatsoever. They also did a very good job staining evenly in the color I chose. (I ultimately wished I had gone a shade darker, but that is not their fault!). They applied a satin finish that was also done beautifully.
My only complaint was that the workmen were sloppy. They apparently put cans of stain down on the windowsills while they were working, so there were brown stains on the sills when I went over to check out the work. Having said that, when I reported the problem to KK, they responded immediately and when they came back to do additional work (I had also hired them to do some painting--though not originally of the windowsills), they cleaned up all the stains.
KK's estimate was more than some of the other estimates I got ($3/sf instead of $2/sf for staining and refinishing), but I learned the hard way on a past floor job that you get what you pay for. This work was well worth the cost, and Rudy's responsiveness and flexibility made this a hassle free job. I would work with KK again and would recommend them.
