We hired JJ and his team to paint the inside and outside of our house and replace carpets in 2 rooms, to get our house ready to be sold. The outside painting included removal of some water logged wood in several places around the front door. A different contractor had recommended replacing the front door at substantial cost. We were very happy with the carpentry work around the front door and all of the painting that JJ and his team did. There was one small miscommunication that resulted in the painter taking 2 paintings off the wall that we had wanted to stay on the wall because of their fragility but he more than made up for this by painting window trim that was not in the contract for no additional cost. JJ replaced carpet in two rooms and did a great job. We have been so happy with JJ's work that we have hired him to do similar work in our new house and a rental house. His work is excellent and his prices were the lowest of many estimates we received.

I contacted MHI through Angie's list to setup an appt for an estimate. The entire experience of coordinating to showing up on time was excellent. Once here, we went through the job I was requesting. I was provided an estimate on the spot. The cost for the job was very reasonable. I was very impressed with the process. However, there's a big 'but' in here. While I found the owner nice, I didn't know what I didn't know and there was very little engagement from him to help me through the process of what I could or should consider when talking through what my job requirements might be. I believe MHI would do a great job if you know eactly what you want. Given that I was in the exploration phase and ultimately not sure what I wanted, I was concerned there might be scope creep or the job may simply be less than I expected. After speaking with other contractors, their pricing was considerably higher which fed the concern on scope creep or not taking into account what we really might want through a better exploratory process. Maybe MHI was less expensive and would do a good job but I found that the additional due diligence of some of the other companies made me more comfortable with the end result.

It went fine. JJ came to our house for an estimate a few days after initial email sent and we decided to hire him and his crew one week later. We agreed to a start date about month down the road and everything went fine. The complete job took 5 days which included removing all appliances, old flooring, laying backer board and than tiling an area over 400 sq ft. JJ and his staff were extremely polite and professional during the whole project to not just me, but my wife and son as well. The end result came out fantastic and my wife and I could not be happier. Will be using this company again for future projects.

We found another company who did an excellent job, and we were very pleased with their services.

Services performed: (1) Finish two areas in basement, one 12' x 12' and one approximately 12' x 21' with 2x4 wall framing, r13 batt insulation at exterior walls, drywall at walls and ceiling, recessed lights (7), receptacle outlets (10), coax outlets (2), paint, two doors, base molding. Work at stairwell includes drywall and paint on steps. Flooring of finished rooms to be hardwood." (2) Construction and installation of two buit-in red oak bookcases trimmed with red oak and finished with stain and polyurethane. One shelf contains twelve two-and-one-half foot shelves; the other contains ten three-foot shelves. (3) Outdoor water proofing and concrete restoration. (4) Installation of new AC sump pump, new DC backup sump pump, and sump pump water alarm. (5) Installation of three new outlets in unfinished portion of basement, including one GFCI outlet. I had used this firm previously to install a new entryway door. As with that experience, this one was superb: JJ is a clear communicator, is conscientious, and takes the time to do the work properly. He is a pleasure to work with, and I will definitey hire him again. During the course of this work, I also learned that MHIC does general handyman work at a rate nearly 50% lower than the franchised handyman service I had been using.

Because JJ had done such a good job remodeling my basement, I hired him to demolish the closet in my master bedroom and replace it with a shelving/hanging system from easyclosets.com. He worked with my schedule and installed all the 19 boxes of materials the website sent. I am very pleased with the outcome and would definitely hire JJ again for any remodeling job in my house.

They remodeled two houses for me which needed repairs and updating before I could put them on the market for sale. The work included installing a new kitchen, reconfiguration of interior space, adding a bathroom, installation of windows, floor refinishing, and other work in one house and kitchen updating, painting, exterior decking and general repair work on the second house. They did a great job.

Impressed with the quality of the work. The railings turned out really nice. I originally thought JJ & his assistants would install a fully assembled piece but each individual spindle was installed meticulously. The drywall & both porch jobs were done equally well and shows off my house beautifully. I liked that JJ is the owner & is on site to help with the work. Attention to detail is greater when the owner is there to hold his assistants accountable. Definitely would hire again for additional jobs.

Really? Does anyone believe this is a reasonable quote for the work requested?

Poorly. The company was clearly not capable of performing the job and did not follow up with an estimate.

JJ was great and handled problems like the pro he is. Home Depot F**ked up our order and had JJ running around town to get it right. JJ returned damaged goods, bought a new vanity for us and spent the entire day with us to get most of the job done.

JJ ordered new windows, siding and paint to exactly match my existing windows, siding and paint. He listened to my questions and ideas. He and his assistant were friendly and professional. They arrived on time each morning and cleaned up before they left each day. Per my request, JJ also installed a pipe in the wall to feed all the TV and cable wires from the tv to the entertainment center. He installed new window ledges to match my other existing windows. The work took three days to complete. I am very particular about work done at my home, and I was very pleased with the work performed by JJ and his assistant. I can highly recommend this contractor to my friends. I will hire JJ again for future projects.

We were very pleased with JJ's work and the finished room in the basement. Since the area already had studs up and some electrical and HVAC work done, JJ was flexible in doing some other related work in the area (such as moving light switches). JJ was always courteous, on-time, showed up when he said he would and kept us informed of schedules and progress. His workers were polite and respectful (no loud music, etc) and the work areas were kept clean. And the project was completed when JJ said it would be. The shed JJ built this year fits perfectly in the space we had under the deck. It has a concrete base and has siding that matches the house. As several people have remarked, it looks like it's always been there and belongs on the house. Again, JJ and his crew were polite, on-time, respectful and did what they promised. My husband is really happy with the shed. JJ is quiet until you get to know him - but he knows his stuff. We definitely recommend him.

I needed to have the basement remodeled after a small flooding event destroyed the carpeting. The contractor came to the house and surveyed the area. I told him I wanted to do major upgrades to the half bath and was interested in getting lights installed in the ceiling. He gave me a reasonable estimate for the carpet, painting, building a shower stall, lighting installation, and replacing all the bath fixtures. We worked out a schedule that fit both of our schedules, and I paid 1/3 as a downpayment on the contract. During the interim, he kept in touch by email to advise me on picking the fixtures I wanted him to use. When the start date arrived, he and his assistant arrived early and got to work. He told me it would take 2 weeks, and they finished on schedule. During the remodeling, I changed a couple small items and he worked those changes in to the schedule easily. After he finished, I asked him for an estimate for another small painting/drywall fix job, and signed a contract to have that done a couple months later.

JJ Palmer is easy to deal with. Gave me a great estimate just what i was looking for. Started job on time and finished on time. Him and his crew did a great job. Very helpful, any future projects that need to be done will be his.

I hired Maryland Home Improvement Company to replace my entry door and sidelights. JJ Palmer provided us with a comprehensive written estimate and was very easy to work with on the phone initially and when he came out to the house to size up the job. I provided a small deposit and JJ orderded the door and sidelight we had selected from the manufacturer. The day the door and sidelights arrived from the factory, JJ called me to schedule service for the next day. He and his assistant worked deliberately and carefully and took numerous extra small steps, for example using foam insulation to seal up all cracks before replacing the molding, re-mortaring the interface between the door and the brick porch, creating a new molding strip for the bottom of the doorway and staining it to match our hardwood floor. JJ and his assistant arrived when they said they would, worked hard, and paid extremely close attention to detail. They did not rush to finish the job but instead came back the second day (after making sure that the door was installed and secured) to complete numerous small details, including exrtemely thorough air and water sealing. JJ Palmer is a pleasure to work with and is an extremely knowledgeable and skilled craftsman who takes pride in his work and is committed to doing the job right. I will certainly use his services again -- and, indeed, am considering hiring his firm to furnish part of our basement.

We had a history of cleaning up water from the floor, when the utility sink would overflow with water from washer. In the basement we have a concrete utility sink, which overflowed when the washer emptied into it. We got a couple of estimates to relocate the exit tube directly into the sewer pipe, instead of the sink. As we discussed where and how we would put the water exit tube into the sewer pipe, we came up with a compromise. This contractor offered a way to do this, so as to save time and money. We did not fix the drain in the sink; but, we don't have water on the floor anymore. We are happy now one year later. I may still replace the sink if I want to in the future. For now, it drains fast enough for other tasks to be done in it. Thanks to MD Home Improvement.

J.J. was prompt in supplying his estimate and in scheduling the work. He and his assistant were punctual on the day scheduled and completed the work in a thoroughly professional manner. I would not hesitate to hire J.J. again -- in fact, we've discussed additional work for later this year.

JJ and his helper were a pleasure to do business with. I had a laundry list of items I wanted to have completed and all were completed to my satisfaction. He will not nickle & dime you to death and is fair to work with. Work was done starting at 7am and all completed same day. I plan on using JJ for future work.

We took advantage of a Big Deal through Angie's List to have 200 sq. ft. of space finished for $4,000.00. JJ came out for an initial visit to assess the space and understand what we wanted. We also asked for some feedback on work that was beyond the scope of the Big Deal, but that we wanted to have priced out. He was willing to provide feedback on both. We had some time challenges because we had guests coming into town for the Thanksgiving holiday and were under pressure to get the spare bedroom finished. JJ's crew was prompt and professional. They got the day started early and put in a full day's work. There were challenges due to exposed pipes, etc., JJ's team did a really nice job building bulkheads around the pipes and their finished work was crisp. Like another reviewer, there was a hiccup with some of the electrical after finishing, but JJ came back promptly, and had the problem fixed. Because this was an Angie's List deal, there was some initial confusion when JJ returned to do the work between what was and wasn't covered under the deal, but JJ took extra care to understand and resolve my concerns. Additionally, he suggested ways that we could shift costs from one part of the project to another- i.e. forgoing carpet in the storage area so that we could allocate that cost towards a second door. JJ is a very nice guy and his crew was great. He does have a dry sense of humor and I was glad that I'd read plenty of reviews before hand which prepared me for this :-) I would use him again without hesitation.

Two-Thirds of our basement was finished prior to this project, with the finished space used for office and general family recreational purposes. We wanted to add two rooms and a shower in the unfinished space. We already have a half-bath in the basement. Through Angies List we select 3 contractors. All came out to look and give us their take on how best the space can be finished. We were not necessarily looking for the lowest price. MHIC was the contractor that gave us the best idea on how to complete our unfinished space. One of the other contractor never even came with a measuring tape and gave us estimates from his head. All this happened around October 2011. JJ Palmer the owner of MHIC let us know that the earliest he can commence on our job is first week of January 2012. JJ came out again a fews weeks after the initial visit to confirm what we want to do and ask if there had been changes.Work started first week of January. JJ let it be known that to do a good job, he has to take his time and since what we want is a decent job, that was no issue. JJ and his crew were punctual throughout the project often arriving before 7am. This allowed us if required to have conversation with him about the project before going out for the day. While JJ did not stay all the time with his crew each day. He showed up each day throughout the project and addressed whatever concerns we had. 9 days after starting, the job was completed to our satisfaction with JJ letting us know to call him is we find anything we are unsatisfied with after he and his crew leaves. JJ followed up with an e-mail a week later to find out if everything with the project was OK.The customer service level provided us by MHIC was impeccable. JJ is a true professional and a gentleman. When for example realizes he had made a mistake on a prior agreement, he apologized without reservations. Use this contractor and you will not regret it. We will definitely make use of MHIC's services again.

I called this company based on its close location to my own home as well as the excellent reviews on Angie's List. When I talked to the person on the line for the company I explained my window was broken and I needed it to be repaired or fixed in the next few days. I was told someone would call back. Fast forward eight hours. After not hearing back from anyone at Maryland Home Improvement, I call and the man who I talked to earlier answered. I said I was still waiting to hear after calling earlier that morning. He then said he was JUST going to call me to say they were very busy in the field today and they would have to come by tomorrow. I mentioned again that I really needed to have the window repaired or replaced by tomorrow. He then said they were backlogged for a month, no way they could do that. I am sure based on reviews here they do solid work, but based on this I will never call this company again. It always surprises me when companies treat prospective customers in this manner. The only thing he had to do with our initial conversation was state they were really busy and would not be able to meet my needs.

Mr. Palmer was punctual for our appointment. We examined the basement and discussed various options for remodeling within the scope of the Big Deal. I requested an estimate for adding a wash basin/wall addition to the existing toilet, and he estimated that the entire job would run $6,000 with that extra work. He sketched out a possible plan. We then looked at area outside where water might be entering, and he offered to work with downspouts to divert water. That latter would cost me $500. In fact, we made a tentative appointment for his people to return the following week. Several days later, he returned to estimate materials. However, within 2 days, I decided to hold off on having him do this work until I had obtained other estimates regarding remediation of basement moisture issues. I called and left him a message. Getting those estimates took longer than I had expected, but about 3 weeks later, I emailed Mr. Palmer and requested a written estimate for the basement remodeling we had discussed. However, he did not respond and did not provide requested estimate.

First JJ was very professional, yet friendly. Arrived on time, price quoted was the same, and I even tipped him. The total time was about an hour, and my door is back on better than it was originally. Now it closes tighter, and latches as it should. He Did an outstanding job.
