Design Studios in DC, MD and VA. Let Us Inspire You. Since 1961, Case has designed and built more of the finest kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and interior spaces than any other local remodeler. Our entire focus is turning dreams into reality.
The job was excellent from start to finish. The designer worked with us to layout the bathrooms and select tile, fixtures, etc. She has excellent insight into our preferences. The jobs were well managed from a project point of view. On time and within budget. Craftsman ship is excellent both of the Case employees and the sub-contractors. Everyone showed up when they were supposed to and clearly knew what they were doing. I can recommend them without reservations. We are so satisfied that we plan to engage Case in 2011 to remodel our kitchen and breakfast room.
Description of Work: Case designed and then remodeled two bathrooms. One required extensive changes in plumbing and lighting while the other was less complex. The existing bathrooms were ripped out to the studs and completely replaced. Master bath is glass shower, slipper tub, tile walls plus decorative tile band, tile floors, granite vanity and all new fixtures. Hall bath was new fixtures including the tub, tiles walls and decorative band, tile floors, pedestal sink and wall cabinet.

We could not be happier with the results of our remodeling project with Case. Everyone that we dealt with from the beginning to the end was absolutely top notch. Case actually finished early and the budget didn't move one penny from what we had agreed upon. All of the carpenters, painters, plumbers, etc. were wonderful. We are thrilled with the results and two years later continue to receive compliments from neighbors and people passing by the house. Case transformed our home into a one of a kind cottage and we LOVE it!!!
Description of Work: We completely changed the front of our home and overall look of the entire house. We worked with the Case architect for design and then Case handled the entire renovation. Added a front porch, two bedrooms upstairs and additional bathroom. Case transformed our boring looking house to a beautiful cottage. We literally have total strangers that stop in front of the house to admire and compliment our home.

The experience with Case Design was not my first positive experience with the Handy Man Services department and it will not be my last. I intend to call them first on any future work needed to my home. The Case Design approach to repairs in my home was very professional, user friendly, with on time performance as originally estimated. The work was also completed at their estimated price. I especially appreciated the quality of their work and the excellent communication skills used by the project manager and skilled workman resulting in what I expected - no surprises - during the job; what was promised was delivered. I have recommended Case Design Handy Man Services department to my friends and neighbors. Thanks to all who were involved in repairs to my home.
Description of Work: Front door frame & hardware was repaired where possible and replacement locking mechanisms added to allow the door to open and close properly and securely. Dry wall replacement patch was also installed and painted.
We have hired Case Design Remodeling to do several projects over the years, some major and some minor. All of the employees have been responsive, knowledgeable and courteous. Throughout the major projects, the workers were very much concerned about the disruption to the space, making sure the consturction site was cleaned daily and the rest of the house was free from dust. During our total kitchen remodel, we were without water for only one day. What we love about Case Design is their craftmanship, the work is exceptional and they have the ability to make an addition look like it was part of the original structure. Our family room/master bath addition was completed within the stated time frame and within budget. What we really like about this company, is that they stand behind their work. We had a sky light leaking 8 years after it was installed. We called Case and they were there the next day. The leak was fixed for a nominal fee.
Description of Work: Total Kitchen remodel, total bath remodel, a two room one and half bath addition, refinished basement with a new bathroom, new roof, new windows, dry wall throughout most of the house, crown molding, new deck, new doors installed

I was impressed with Case's overall workmanship and professionalism. They showed up on time and finished the work right on schedule. Their workmen were extremely courteous and helpful and more importantly they cleaned up very well after the work was completed.

He was really dismissive and did not want to work on the project we needed to have done.
Description of Work: I called them since we were going to do a master bath remodel. The guy was initially helpful over the phone. We set up a time for him to come out. I ran into a schedule issue and called the number he gave me to let him know and then he did come by and left me a rude message. I called him back and he was snippy with me. He then came out to look at the project he said it was not worth his time to do the work.

We are very happy that this member decided to share their comments and feedback. We understand that the client made an appointment with one of our Project Designers and ran into a scheduling conflict and called the office number to reschedule the appointment, which was too late as the project designer had already left for the meeting. We completely understand that things come up and appointments have to be rescheduled. The project designer was more than happy to reschedule the appointment and did so. The project designer's goal was to provide sound advice and help the client make good decisions. We are truly sorry if the client felt like her project did not seem important enough. Since 1961 we have helped thousands of clients meet their remodeling and home repair goals. No job is too big or small and every client is important to us. Since this posting we have made several attempts to reach the client to discuss this matter further, but have not been successful in receiving a response. We are more than happy to speak with the client about this if and when the client wishes to contact us.

We went forward with Case for our bathroom remodel project based on only an large estimated range for the project and the company's reputation. We had an initial expenditure of several hundred dollars to get three potential layouts for the bathrooms. This expenditure was fine, although for three "designs" I expected more than simple layouts, particularly since I provided them with detailed drawings for two of the layouts. After picking a layout, we then paid several thousand dollars (it was some percentage of the estimated total) to move forward and select finishes and get a detailed budget; this expenditure was to be credited to the final project budget. Case didn't add any value to the process of selecting the finishes for the bathroom -- there was no design help as would be anticipated with a design/build company. Case just made appointments for us at a tile store and bath fixtures store, where we went about picking out what we wanted. There was also no drawings of either the layout or design choices other than the simple flat layout from the first step of the "design" process; other design/build companies do offer such design visualizations, and based on the initial consultation, we were under the impression (although clearly mistakenly) that Case also offered such design services. The final budget was developed, and the price came in at the top of the estimated range, despite us simplifying the design of the project and reducing the amount of construction needed after the initial range estimate. The high budget was not due to our choices of finishes and fixtures -- it was from the base price of construction. The biggest problem with the final proposal and budget, however, was that it did not include two key features: a finished floor and repair of a ceiling that would be removed to run plumbing. Also, despite several weeks of working with Case, multiple meetings, and pages of detailed printed specifications we provided to Case, parts of the final contract were wrong. When we inquired why such integral parts of the project (the floor and ceiling) were omitted from the contract/scope of work, we were told they were left out because we had budgetary concerns (we had not asked for anything to be left out of the contract/scope of work other than painting, which we would do ourselves, nor had we expressed any maximum budget that we had to stay within). We knew when we chose Case that we weren't going with the budget option. We were willing to spend the additional premium because we believed it would get us design help and ensure a smoother remodeling process with all of the details taken care of. This did not happen. We decided that we were not comfortable completing the project with Case at the price they were charging based on significant details being omitted or incorrect. When we tried to reduce the scope of the project to recover some of the initial expenses of working with Case, they prorated the credit we received from our initial expenditures based on the reduced scope of work. We are completing the work with another company at 25% less than the Case budget, with all floors and ceilings included, plus all of the design and budget work we paid for with Case was included with the other company. If you plan a project with Case, three things to take into consideration: 1) Case may not be the best choice if you are at all budget conscious; 2) you don't get a lot of design help other than the physical layout of the project; 3) the individual team you work with at the company likely makes a big difference -- the people we worked with weren't great, but there likely are better teams within this large company.
Description of Work: Paid for initial design and full budget development for creating a new master bath and remodeling a hall bath. After "design" phase, we did not complete the project with Case.

Response from Case Design Remodeling Inc
We certainly understand the member’s frustration with the final outcome of her experience with Case. Case is also disappointed that the project that was designed and developed, over a long period of time, with many hours of meetings, design and selection did not move forward to contract, and ultimately construction. Unfortunately some times the client’s expectation of budgeting is not typical, or realistic for a particular scope of work. The member was offered a number of schemes, level of finishes, and options to help maintain a reasonable budget during the process. She also decided to refuse most of the guidance and advice offered and insisted on certain ideas of her own. She was also accompanied during all of the selection process to help determine tile, fixtures, etc. and supplied with detailed information on all selections prior to contract. At the contract meeting it was determined that the final price was too high, although it fell within the budget range. Case then changed the scope of work to exclude some closets and other items. After contacting the member with the adjusted number it was determined that the price was still too high. After a number of weeks we were contacted and asked to develop a budget for remodeling just the hall bath. The budgeting and contract were prepared and presented to the client, at which point Case was never contacted again and phone calls to the client were not returned. Case would be more than happy to apply the member’s investment to another project within a reasonable amount of time, in any case the member kept all designs, drawings, and selection information which I am sure aided in the completion of the project with other parties.

I thought it went really well. I liked my contact at the company. One thing I didn't like was they started and then there would be days when they didn't show up. I didn't like the delays in the project. It took longer than they said that it would take and I think that was the reason why.

We wanted them to propose on the project as we wanted to have quality work with minimal headache. In the end, we just didn't feel comfortable that our initial experiences with them were going to lead to an experience that would justify their rather high price. (found error on drawings, could not provide portfolio of similar jobs.) I would also note, this was the only contractor who got paid to propose on the work--they charged us $500 which we could have applied to the job had we gone with them. We also preferred a company that would complete the job start to finish, but they were not interested in installing carpet, painting, and installing several accessories in the bathroom.

We appreciate the member's comments. Several staff members worked with the client for a number of hours to come up with plans that would suit the client's needs. We made sure to keep all lines of communication open in order to receive the appropriate feedback from the client. If any concerns were brought to our attention, we would have addressed them right away. We provided 4 completely different conceptual drawings for review. We reviewed the drawings together and made changes based upon their feedback. We agreed on a final layout. We then brought in our team of specialists to visit the house in order to refine the budget. The ultimate goal was to come up with a plan that met the client's expectation in terms of design and workmanship while keeping the project under a certain budget. As a full-service remodeling company Case can completed the project from start to finish. We would love to discuss the matter further if the client has any additional questions or comments.

Demolition went fine, but due to a scheduling mix up by the plumber's company, he did not show on the date scheduled. This delay pushed back the retile job. The Case Design handyman 's (Jeff) schedule was full and he couldn't come back to finish my job for two weeks. I was so grateful when Jeff talked to his boss and another customer and switched his schedule around so he could finish my job only one day after the original date. In addition, the plumber had botched the installation of the pipes so Jeff had to rework the pipes before he could retile. He did an outstanding job and went beyond what others might have done to help me. I am so grateful to Jeff, his boss and his other customer for accommodating their schedules for me. I really wasn't looking forward to not showering for two weeks! My bath looks wonderful and works like it should. I couldn't be more pleased with the job Jeff from Case Design did.
Description of Work: I had to replace the three handle tub/shower faucet in my only bathroom. I decided to replace it with a single handle. The plumber I chose for installing the faucet did not do tile work so I picked Case Design/Remodeling handyman service to take out the old tile and replace the new tile.

I didn't have a good experience at all with them. They came out many times and spent too much of time telling me about them instead of listening to my needs. They had a very broad estimate which didn't mean much and they never called again. They definitely didn't treat me well and I am not going to call them again. I had left a message on their website for them to call me back, as I had something to submit to them and they never contacted me. I called them in mid September and they came on the 24th of September. There was a man who came out and I showed him my house. I told him about the different projects that I wanted to do. It took a lot of time, as he was constantly interrupting me to tell me as to how good they were and how best they were. He was also not listening to me and was just talking. I didn't like the fact that he was bad-mouthing the work of other companies. He didn't make me feel good and I felt that he shouldn't be talking bad about the other companies. He had an arrogant style and I don't like arrogance. He actually came first on the 23rd of September, as he had the wrong day and time. He was totally lost when he came on the 23rd, as he didn't know as to what he was doing and my nanny told him to come the next day. He started talking so much that he ran out of time. He had just around one and a half hour to look at the house and by the time the time finished, he started rushing without listening to me any more. He scribbled on a piece of paper and put very big ranges on the 3 bathrooms that I wanted to be remodeled. I also have a bedroom that needs to be finished. He mentioned a few things on the paper and not all the things. He told me that he was doing it just because those things were my priorities and not all, when I asked him as to why he didn't mention about everything. He later on told me that the development fees would be 650 $ for the work to be done. He also told me that they were very good at the gutter work and he was going to send me an offer for the gutter work very quickly, but he never did. In fact, I never heard about him again. They are a company which has a good reputation in terms of their principles, but it's a very expensive company. They didn't respond to my needs at all. He wasn't demand or supply driven. I felt that he didn't take me seriously. He did say that the small jobs were important and told that they do most of the small jobs themselves. However, I had a lot of projects to be done which weren't necessarily small. He was on time on the date of appointment. His company seemed to be professional, but his behavior wasn't professional. He was in fact trying to prove that his company was the best, but he was kind of overdoing it.

We appreciate this member's comments and feedback. We explained the process to her, performed a thorough walk-through of the home, and gave her some budget ranges for the bathroom remodels. At this juncture, we are unable to provide precise costs on this work because of the unknown variables of design, product selections, and finishes. As is our typical process, we offered that she enter into a Design feasibility study for a fee of $650 to explore such options and determine specific costs and scope of work. We felt like we responded to her in a timely manner and were clear with how we could help her with her options. Our goal is to provide great advice and offer assistance to help clients make great choices.

When they did the estimate, they said they would bill it as an hourly job instead of a firm bid - which I was not happy about in the beginning. It took them a number of days to schedule the work after we made our deposit, however once they called, their employee did show up when he said he would. However, I happened to be working from home that day and it seemed as though little actual work was taking place - I know he wasn't at the worksite all day (had to go off to get "supplies") and he left for the day at 3:30 (he arrived at 7:30). I could hear a lot of sighing and groaning outside as well. He had to come back an extra half-day, which cost us 20% more than the estimate in the end, which the Case manager did not seem concerned about. He said that it's typical to pay for the hourly workers even when they leave the work site, and said it would have cost more if they'd done it as a contract job...which makes me think they are REALLY overbidding those jobs.

This work was required as result of flood damage to basement. I only obtained two quotes because it was time urgent. Both contractors recommended time & materials contracts at a fixed hourly rate. Case had a higher hourly rate ($97/hour), but estimated fewer hours and was the better overall price. Salesman spent a lot of time describing all of the services the company offers, including substantial architectural experience. This was interesting for future reference, but a little beyond what I needed for this task. Work was scheduled and completed in a timely manner, although job took about two hours more than estimate. Workmanship was very good and I would consider this company in the future.

I contacted Case Design based on the recommendation of my realtor. They were cordial, professional and communicated well with us. We sent them pictures of some of our design interests, etc. They sent out two people for the initial consult. We discussed the scope of work, etc. They were, as I noted, tremendously professional and put us at ease. They are clearly the creme de la creme of design/build firms in Northern Virginia. I have no question that they would have built us a BEAUTIFUL home and done the absolute finest quality work. Unfortunately, the quote they gave us was more than double our budget. There was just no way we could possibly afford to hire them. They were also the most prompt with providing their quote - they were the first of the 5 firms we interviewed to provide an estimate. This meant that they ended up having to wait over a week while we continued to interview firms. They were discreet in calling to check back with us, and even when I told them that their quote was probably going to end up being far too high, they were still polite and decent enough to tell us about a new type of home loan (a federal 203k loan) whereby you can refinance the cost of repairs into a mortgage. I want to make clear that I have no issues with Case Design - they were simply very far outside our budget. I think they cater to a more 'high-end' clientele. If you have the money to spend, these guys are probably the BEST in the business. We just don't have that kind of money.

It was a frustrating way for my wife to spend an afternoon.
Description of Work: My wife called Case Handyman to do an assortment of work around the house. We were instructed how their time & material billing worked and agreed to have one of their handyman come out. He showed up right on time, assessed the work and then told my wife that he had to go to the store to purchase some materials and would be back in about 30-40min. After an hour and a half my wife called Case to find out if/when he was coming back. She was told that they would call the handyman to find out where he was and call her right back. After another half hour with no return call, she called again and was told that the handyman got lost and should be back to our home in about 15min. After another half hour and no handyman, my wife called to cancel the appointment. The woman she spoke with apologized and told us that we would not be charged.

Good workmen, very professional. If a return visit is required to redo a project there is no problem at all. But two simple tasks required repeated visits to finish the job properly. And Case is not inexpensive so you'd expect better from them.
Description of Work: We had various handyman services performed. Most work was done well, such as drywall repair and a major window and wall replacement. But some smaller tasks that were not done well included the toilet which required 2 return visits to fix properly, and we had a shower recaulked that after 4 attempts is still not done properly. I think Case is probably better for big jobs than handyman jobs.

They are incredibly excellent. The supervisors and the workers are just phenomenal. They clean everything after the work is done. Their have been a few small problems but they also took care of it immediately. The price is very reasonable and quality of service is wonderful.

The Case handyman, Jim Brines, was exceptional; he showed up on time and when he said he would. He made helpful suggestions for better ways to fix things and went out of his way to get things done in a timely and cost efficient manner. He even did some work on my neighbor's house when we realized the leak was coming from there. Everyone was quite pleased with the results.
Description of Work: The main project was rebuilding the shower pan in a custom shower. I also had them install three new faucets, repair a sidewalk, investigate a water leak, and do a couple other small projects.
