They did pretty much nothing well and we fired them at some point. They were sloppy and it was just really a horrible experience. We tell everybody not to use them. They were not responsive, we wrote a letter to the president and no one ever got back to us. They were just not good. We ended up doing the work ourselves. We had to hire molding people and get the job done. It was a nightmare. I'm so upset even though its three years gone by.
Description of Work: We used Case Design Remodeling Inc three years ago to refinish the basement.

Leading up to the job, Case was very nice and responsive. As soon as it was time to start, that all disappeared. We signed a contract listing all the work to be completed, and an approximate start time. We scheduled this for when my wife was on maternity leave, so that she could be there when any questions came up. First problem - Case started 6 weeks later than their estimated start date. Starting the very first day my wife was back at work. Second problem - they lied to us about why. They told us the screen doors were on backorder from the manufacturer, but we later came to find out from the person installing them that he just went to a store and bought them. Third problem - there was supposed to be a walkthrough before work started, to get everyone on the same page. This didn't happen. This was the main reason that all the later problems occurred. Fourth problem - Case refused to do work that was in the contract. The contract specified they would replace all the trim around the door. I didn't put that in the contract, Case did. But after installing the door, they said they wouldn't replace the trim. They said the reason is that the brick walls around it are old and might need to be repaired - i.e., they wouldn't do it because it was hard. I assumed that paying a lot more than the work should cost would mean that they would go the extra mile - no, they wouldn't go an extra inch. Fifth problem - my front door is not quite square. Sixth problem - they installed the front door farther forward than it used to be. There is plenty of room where it could have been farther back. But because of where they installed it, there was no room to install the screen door - which is entirely their fault. Again with a walkthrough and planning this would have been avoidable. Seventh problem - the retractable screen door they installed in the back door was horrible. It kept catching at the bottom and coming out of the track. It's gone now. Eighth problem - in the lead up to the job, the sales rep told us we could pick which kind of railing we wanted. I wanted a basic round railing. But I was never asked by the person installing it, I just came home one day to find this big thick railing installed. The work is good, but it's not what I wanted, and the railing is so big I can't actually close my hand around it like you can with a basic railing, and I'm a 6' tall man.
Description of Work: We hired Case to replace our stair railing, and to install retractable screen doors in the front and rear doors.

Response from Case Design Remodeling Inc
We appreciate this member's comments and feedback and are sorry to hear about his concerns. We were not aware of any of these issues up until the posting on Angie's List. As soon as we saw the posting we immediately contacted the client (by phone and by email) to discuss the matter in detail. Our multiple attempts to reach the client has not been successful. Our contract included fixing the front door, replacing a handrail and installing 2 roll up screen doors. All the work was completed well except for the screen door which would not fit on the front door due to the iron security door that was in the way. Our representative spoke to the client and offered him a credit for the screen door and suggested that perhaps a security type screen door may be the solution. He agreed and our representative forwarded him websites to view such doors. The client was going to get back to our representatives with his selection, but he never did. The client was hard to to reach and we could not get a response. After many attempts, he responded to the last letter sent. Our representative met him at his property and went over the work. The client seemed pleased with everything. A credit was issued for the screen door and the client made the final payment. Our goal is to keep all lines of communication open at every level of the job. If the client wants to discuss any of the issues listed, he is more than welcome to contact us. Since 1961, we have helped thousands of delighted clients with home improvement and repairs.

It was definitely one of the smaller jobs Case has undertaken -- a light remodeling of one bathroom and some work on our stairs. They did great work: quick, good workmanship and kept things clean. They are never the lowest bidder: in fact, they are almost the highest (by a lot). But they back up their high prices with good service. More than two years later, we had some issues with a portion of the renovation work. Called them up and they came out THE NEXT DAY to make repairs -- at no cost to us. That's what you pay for: they stand behind their work.

No problems. The man came on time, knew what he was doing, worked efficiently and professionally and left.
Description of Work: I had Case Design do some carpentry work for me. I was renting an apartment I had renovated and needed some California closets I had installed altered and some light repair work in the bathroom. Generally these jobs were too small for most companies to come in and take care of. I had to pay a little more to get these things done, but I found that Case has handymen who know what they are doing and do it well. I was willing to pay a little more to do that. I would use their handyman services again.

They came on time, did a profesional job, and when I mentioned the tile looked like it had grout in the imprefections of the stone tile, the project manager took out his pocket knife and took about 10 minutes getting the excess grout out of the tile. I'm happy and the wife's happy which means I'm happier. I think they are too expensive but the estimate/sales phase sold us on the company.
Description of Work: I asked them to install a backsplash in the kitchen. During the estimate process, they mentioned replacing damaged cherry wood panaling on the side of a built in microwave oven combination, adding under cabinet lighting, and adding a down draft exaust vent. We decided on the backsplash, under cabinet lighting and panel repair.

We’ve used them a couple of times many years ago. They are very expensive. They do great work but about twice the price as somebody else. The work that they did was very good. They had built a deck for us about ten years ago and it’s held up very well. That’s why we went with them for the portico, just because we knew them. Other people in the neighborhood have got the same thing done for half the price, and it still looks good. I would probably not use their services again in the future.

Our experience working with Case Design and Remodeling on this project was absolutely excellent. As noted above, Lisa Cortright, the project designer, made the design process as easy as possible, was always responsive, professional, smart and client-oriented, whether offering to accompany us to suppliers or bringing samples to our home, or meeting with us at times that worked for us, all without any pressure. We often communicated by email, accommodating my busy schedule so that I could reply late at night or while on the road. And Lisa has great intuition and excellent taste that made working with her delightful. Kevin Morrissey, the construction project manager, is also great to work with and is an excellent communicator and very practical. Kevin has a wealth of experience and he brought that experience to bear in skillfully moving this project from design to reality -- setting realistic expectations while making the process as easy on us as possible. Kevin met with us weekly to answer our questions and prepared us for what to expect, explained the process to us with ease and clarity, presented alternatives and was mindful of their budget implications so that there were NO surprises. Kevin answered hundreds of questions from us and communicated with us clearly, promptly and often and between weekly meetings, by email or cell. Kevin knows his business and has the respect of those who work with and for him, and he has ours as well. John, our on-site carpenter, was a pleasure to have on-site every day, and we have missed him. John arrived every morning at 7 am, and worked with skill, precision, and discipline all day, every day, for over 4 months. For those of us who are all thumbs, it was truly remarkable to watch John work. John is a true craftsman who respects his tools and keeps his workplace in perfect order. Our golden retriver was also befriended by John. Kevin, Lisa and John made a great team, communicated among themselves easily, and made us feel that we were in excellent hands, as evidenced by our beautiful new kitchen.
Description of Work: Case designed and constructed, from beginning to end, a major marvelous remodeling of our kitchen and breakfast nook, removing 2 weight-bearing walls and creating a beautiful, open space. In the design process, Lisa Cortright provided excellent service, working with us with great skill and patience as we selected the room layout (from several designs she provided), worked out the zoning and permitting issues, selected gorgeous eco-friendly cabinets (which she carefully reviewed with us and gave us excellent design alternatives and advice), the cork flooring in soft brown (which we love), and the skylight. Lisa went with us to visit the Appliance Warehouse, where we benefited from Case's discount, and she worked our choice of appliances into the overall design (again, providing us multiple design choices and checklilsts). Lisa also went with us to the granite wholesaler and provided us with a clear list of choices on every detail and excellent advice, including the location of the faucet and shape of the sink. And she met us at the store where we selected the gorgeous backsplash tiles, and again explained to us every detail and every choice. Lisa recommended several alternative designs and suppliers for knobs and pulls, with very good prices, and helped us select designer electrical outlet covers that are stunning. Once the project entered the demolition and construction phase, we had an extraordinarily excellent experience working with the highly responsive, experienced and competent project manager, Kevin Morrissey, and the very talented carpenter, John, who was on-site every day. The demolition required lead-paint removal and Case made that process as painless as possible for us. The extension of the kitchen included extensive work on the outside of the house, including the installation of new siding and a new copper roof on the extension over the breakfast nook, new gutters on the back of the house, new stone wall in the backyard, and two new staircases with lighting. The removal of one of the weight-bearing walls required a major change to our Heating and Air Conditioning system, adding a second zone in the attic and rewiring the electricity to the attic, all of which was handled beautifully. The kitchen remodeling added a 6 X 15 extension to the back of our house and required the removal of 2 weight-bearing walls and the installation of major new beams, that John, the carpenter, handled beautifully. Kevin Morrissey prepared us for what to expect, explained everything clearly in weekly meetings (with checklists and diagrams) and presented alternatives so that we were able to select the most eco-friendly materials. In addition to changing the windows in the kitchen space, John replaced our old drafty windows in our dining room with high-quality Andersen energy-efficient windows that we love. The kitchen remodeling required an upgrade to our electrical system to accommodate new lighting, new outlets, a convection oven and convection microwave, changes that were diagrammed for us and that Kevin reviewed with us in great detail so that we could approve the design and ask questions. We were never rushed and had time to consider all the alternatives and ask many, many questions. The remodeling also involved major plumbing work, because water and gas lines had to be relocated. John, the on-site carpenter, did the demolition, the framing and insulation work, the siding and window installation, installed the exterior door and cabinets, added the knobs and pulls, and did all the other finishing work in the kitchen, while overseeing with Kevin the subcontractors. Kevin and John handled all the necessary permits and building, plumbing and electrical inspections. A new eco-friendly cork floor was installed and a new hard-wood floor was added in the kitchen nook. Kevin made excellent suggestions on many, many occasions -- from relocating existing lighting to calming addressing all the surprises that come with remodeling an 80-year old home. John also added a chair rail at our last-minute request, and skillfully made improvements to the moldings in our dining room and living room. Kevin also had his heating and air conditioning contractors fix the heating in another addition to our house (that several other contractors had not been able to fix), and crowned off this project by replacing the old leaky storm door on our front door with a beautiful Andersen storm door. No more drafts and a beautiful new kitchen, as well!! We are so very pleased.

The service from Case is top-notch. I used them exclusively for many years. I had one experience with them for which I submitted in a report to Angie's List. To my great surprise I was contacted by Ms. Homa Nowrouzi, Case Marketing Manager. Did not know companies really read customer reports. She insisted whatever the problem Case would make it right. This to me is the mark of a Class A company--the original reason I began doing business with them in the first place. Not only did Ms. Nowrouzi and Steve Owen, Case Handyman Consultant, both call, the crew who came to perform the work were topnotch. The crew even identified a problem with the gutter/fascia board, they repaired, that would have proved very problematic with the torrential rains the following week. In my opinion, they are all aces. This is the company against which all others should be compared. They are trustworthy, punctual and cost effective. And, when a problem cropped up they stepped up and said we will do whatever it takes to make it right--which included a more than generous discount. Thank you Case. BR

We had a lot of work done in our bathroom. We weren't very happy with The Case Design. We know they are famous in the area, and they kept sending us their apprentices. We kept asking them to correct some things. They charged me too much. They would not send the right people and we would look at it and then it had to be redone. There was no caulking around the faucet type in the shower and we had to tell them about that and few other little things. The first time the first person who came was good, and then they were sending the apprentices I guess. They treated us fine and they were good. They were cordial. They were not too quick about their work. The responsiveness was good. I would not use them again in the future. They might have improved now or remained the same; who knows. They finally completed the job but it took awhile.

I used to use this company exclusively and I will never use them again! I wanted to speak with the owner and the service manager wouldn't let me speak with him. Their prices are astronomically high. I could not believe how rude they were to me and they just walked away!
Description of Work: They were supposed to go on my rafters to take care of the animal under our rafters. They just put tin and nails on the roof. We also had another appointment with a mistake on the time. I was certain I made the right time. They said, "We never make time mistakes." It's a local company for the D.C. area. They are a pretty big company. They have a handyman service and a remodeling division. There was a leak in one of the bathrooms because the shower floor wasn't really installed properly initially from the builder. They came in and removed all the flooring and put the proper pan. The job went pretty well overall. We had some large flat doors that encased the shower and apparently they needed to be replaced. That really jacked the price up. I know Case is expensive. I thought the price was quite a lot, but we needed to do it at the time. The workers that they had were very professional and friendly. They cleaned up after themselves. They were pretty considerate. There was a supervisor that would come through periodically. I was impressed when the supervisor showed up with a couple of the workers the first day and introduced himself and introduced the workers. I thought that was pretty cool. He came in at the end to check and make sure we were happy. It was one of those jobs that required multiple visits even though they didn't need to stay that long. The cost was way above and beyond what it should have been. I know people who had complaints about their handyman maintenance service as opposed to the architectural remodeling building side which is a little bit different. For us, they signed on to the job. They were able to begin quickly and complete within the period of time that they had said it would take. They did a good job and did what they said they were going to do. They did a nice job of the transition of not just signing on but having the supervisor come in and introduce. That was really cool. I had not seen that before. The price was too high. They were upfront about the price and we knew about it. It wasn't a surprise for us.

We used Case a few years ago to install a sun tunnel in our hall bath. We were satisfied with that job. About 3 years ago, we went to a Case seminar for kitchen/bath remodeling where we learned what to expect from reputable contractors in general and Case in particular. Two years ago we called for an estimate to remodel our kitchen. After 1 visit, we never heard from them again. My sister used a Case franchise in Richmond, VA, to remodel her bathroom last year and was pleased with the finished project. Based on her recommendation, Case's reputation and Angie's list reports, we decided to try again for our master bath remodel, as we were looking for a company that we could return to for various home projects. We received a prompt, courteous response to our initial inquiry and follow-up visit to our home. A week later we met at Case's Bethesda showroom and received an estimate for the full scope of work mentioned above. One of the things we brought away from the Case seminar was not to accept a "number on a piece of paper" and to expect itemized costs showing labor vs. material. We were disappointed that the free "estimate" was a price range written on paper. In order to go forward, the fee was $500 to design and provide a detailed contract. We reduced the scope of the job and paid the fee because we were confident Case would provide the services we were looking for. We met almost weekly to discuss various options. We visited a vendor's showroom to select plumbing fixtures. The designer brought us samples of tiles and recommended a door style from their cabinet vendor. We discussed options of tile vs. manufactured stone for the shower surround when we saw something that appealed to us online. We were given revised floor plans and elevations per our discussions. After visiting the plumbing showroom, we were given a printed copy of our selections. We were disappointed, again, that this report came only with pictures of our selections rather than a detailed listing of brand/model and price. We stated that we wanted a breakdown of costs. More than two months after our initial contact, we were presented with a contract. The scope of the contract was for generally what we said we wanted from the first home visit. The price of the contract was more than $9,000 over the amount estimated on the "free" initial estimate. In addition, the contract did not include the glass shower door--a major piece of a shower system. The contract stated that material allowances were their cost plus 25% but contained no itemization. The reason we asked for a breakdown of materials and labor line by line was so we can make informed decisions about which items we would purchase, which we would ask Case to purchase, and which items/tasks we would eliminate from the project entirely. When we said that the contract price was too high, Case recommended reducing the contract by reducing the scope. In revised options, they reduced the scope but did not reduce their baseline (labor) costs. Based on Angie's List reports, we knew Case was "expensive", but we didn't know what "expensive" was. Case's materials costs were more than we would have paid if we purchased the material ourselves but we could live with them. We consider labor costs in excess of $38,000 for the size of this project to be "expensive". The $500 we paid for the design/estimate was too much for what we received. There was no design as the final scope was all our ideas, and Case did not offer anything new. We received elevation line drawings rather than computerized colored pictures of what Case expected our finished project to look like. We did not find the line drawings particularly useful, but they are useful to Case's Project Manager. Case loaned us a cabinet door sample of a style/wood/stain they recommended but could not provide other samples of wood/stains per our request. They did not give us a brochure from their cabinet vendor, so we requested one online. We were also able to get samples of cabinet woods/stains from another vendor ourselves in less than a week. Case would not provide a door sample until after contract signing. The Case process took far too long to get a fixed price (9 weeks). The contract did not contain line by line itemization. Although Case probably would have done a good job, as they do pay attention to detail and are a reputable business, they brought nothing above and beyond to the table to justify their high costs.
Description of Work: We paid Case $500 for an detailed design and estimate to remodel a 5x7 master bathroom using the existing thumbprint (no walls or fixtures were to be moved). The scope included demo the present bathroom; replace the tub with a shower system; tile floor, one wall, and shower surround; add electrical work and installation of a towel warmer, heated floor system, recessed overhead light, and exhaust fan; replace the toilet, replace the vanity cabinet, and the sink to include a quartz countertop. Also included in the scope was adding a built-in linen closet, which would require taking space from an adjoining closet in the dressing area, repairing that closet, and adding vanity cabinets, quartz countertop, and lighting in the dressing area. Our initial discussion included additional work to redesign the master bedroom closets, replace four bedroom and closet doors, replace stair rail banister, install baseboard and crown molding in living room and dining room, and installing carpet in the living room and dining room. We opted not to complete this work but to contract for the reduced scope for the master bath/dressing area only.

The project went incredibly smoothly from the design stage through completion. Case helped with the overall design and was very responsive to my ideas and requests for changes. Case helped with design selection as well and when necessary referred me to specialists in areas (tile, appliances) to help me make my choices. They were very sensitive to my budget adn found ways to work within it. Very few unforeseen things happened along the way, but when they did, Case was on top of it and found a way to charge me a reasonable fee for dealing with the unforeseen problems. The carpenters who did the work did a great job and were very personable -- very easy to have around the house for 2 months. I've used Case for all the projects around my house for the past 11 years. This was the biggest project and I am very pleased.
Description of Work: We expanded the kitchen by bumping out and added a screen porch on the side.

The work was top-notch but boy was it expensive. They started on time, finished on time, left the premises in perfect condition, followed up when needed, and were very accommodating. If I ever need something done exactly right, I will use them. Neil Shaut was my contact, and I could not have been more pleased.
Description of Work: I used Case Design to remodel two bathrooms - one small full bath and one powder room. They put in a new shower stall, replaced the toilets, put in new vanities, light fixtures, etc.

They are artistic and they have good craft design ideas. They take a design and they make it work. The only time we used another remodeling firm we had to deal with so many costly errors that were really sorry we had not gone back to Case Remodeling.
Description of Work: They replaced a whole bathroom 2 years ago and last summer they built a beautiful deck in the backyard. They did hook us up with a small landscaping company who completely reconfigured the backyard and they coordinated with the redesign of the deck. They also built a new large eat in kitchen in the past. They did have to add siding and roofing on to the new part of the house. They have done many things for us over the years.

They didn't do any work for us. We had talked to them before about other stuff. They are very professional. I wouldn't have any problem using them but they were more expensive than we wanted to go and that is the reason we didn't use them. They are a very professional company.

Designer kept our budget in mind when suggesting fixtures, cabinets, tile, lighting and countertops. Project manager was very responsive - always available by phone or e-mail to answer questions that might come up. We were given a timeline for the work which turned out to be very accurate. Workers made a special effort to keep dust and dirt contained in the construction area. Designer followed up a few weeks after project was finished to make sure everything was working well, and to be sure we were satisfied with the the project. We are very happy with the project.
Description of Work: Bathroom was updated and re-modled. Stall shower enlarged, re-tiled with new fixtures added, cabinets and sinks were replaced and new granite countertops added.

CASE Design's Sean McLarty came out to our home, met with my wife and I, and took lots of time to understand what we wanted out of our screened porch, including how we were going to use it and what sort of look we wanted for it. We hired him to do a design for us (the cost of the design was later applied to the cost of the work, so it ended up not costing us any extra). He came back a couple of weeks later with a plan that was exactly what we wanted. CASE began work a few weeks later. The very quickly disassembled and removed our old, worn-out wooden deck and put the debris into a dumpster they had parked on the street in front of our house. After that, a truck arrived every few days to drop off lumber and other materials for the on-going project. CASE's carpenters worked quickly and the basic structure of the new porch went up in a matter of days. The entire project took about five weeks from beginning to end. CASE took care of all of the required county permits and met with inspectors. They promptly removed the dumpster for construction debris when a sheriff's deputy came by the house to say that the dumpster could not be parked where it was (too close to a stop sign, it turned out). CASE brought in an electrician near the end of the project to install two GFI electrical outlets at the points I indicated and he installed an outdoor-rated ceiling fan that I supplied. I worked directly with a concrete contractor to pour a small concrete patio next to the screened porch, but CASE worked closely with the contractor, coordinating schedules so that they would not be in one-anothers' way. After the patio was complete, CASE wrapped up their work by adding steps from the porch down to the patio, built a small privacy fence along one edge of the new patio, and added rain gutters and downspouts to the porch's roof. We encountered only two minor problems during the project and only one instance of less-than-perfect communication. The two minor problems were both due to CASE's workers not quite following the plans: They built the step from the house onto the porch to the wrong size and built the small privacy fence in the wrong style. In both cases, I merely needed to point out the problem to the CASE project manager (via email) and the problems were fixed a day or two later. They did not object to the fix, did not try to explain away their mistake, and did not ask for more money to redo the step or the fence. They simply made it right! The only instance in which communication with CASE was less than absolutely perfect was at the absolute end of the project. Apparently, we failed our final inspection because the hand railing along one of the two sets of steps from the porch to yard was about two inches shorter than the inspector liked. No one from CASE mentioned that to us, so we were a little surprised to discover several days after we thought the project was complete that the carpenters had been back and replaced the hand rail with a new one that was two inches longer. A few days later we found that the county inspector had been back out and approved the final inspection. Again, CASE didn't ask us for more money or try to wheedle out of replacing the hand rail, they simply fixed it. I would have liked to have been told about it, though. The work site, i.e., part of our back yard, was a bit a mess during construction. Occasionally, the carpenters would even leave an empty soda can or paper cup behind at the end of the day. However, by the end of the project, they had cleaned everything up and there was little more than some saw dust and disturbed soil to indicated that construction had taken place on the site. The new screened porch actually exceeds our expectations. It is much more attractive looking that we thought it would be. Working with CASE's designer, we went for a deliberately rustic look with unfinished wood and exposed ceiling beams. However, there is a refined quality to the work. The look is rustic, as we intended, but also a clean, strong look with nothing out of proportion. This was our second large project with CASE. They remodeled two bathrooms and a master suite for us in 2006 and did an excellent job. We will probably use them again when we remodel our kitchen in five or tens years. I recommend them.
Description of Work: CASE designed a beautiful screened porch addition to the back of our home, removed our old deck, built the porch as designed, brought in an electrician to install electrical outlets and a ceiling fan, replaced our old sliding glass door, installed skylights in the porch's ceiling, worked closely with our concrete contractor (who poured a small concrete patio next to the porch), then finally installed a small section of privacy fence next to the concrete patio.

With every project it was a positive experience. As I explained above, the designers understood what we wanted and the workmanship was terrific. As with every project such as a kitchen or bathrooms, details are overlooked or forgotten. When this happens, Case is always there to fix it and as quickly as possible. You can really work with them every step of the way.
Description of Work: I've used Case for several projects. They are the only company I would consider using for remodeling projects. I've had them do a kitchen, two bathrooms and they are just finishing renovating the utility room off of the kitchen. Their work is professional, punctual and of the best quality. Of course, they are not the cheapest but over the years I have learned (the hard way) you get what you pay for. I trust their workmanship and most importantly their responsiveness. For instance, about 3 years after our kitchen was redone, one of the sliding shelves started to malfunction. I made one call and within a couple of days they were there, replaced the part and at no charge. Its that level of continuing care that sets Case apart from other design/build firms. I highly recommend them.
