Design Studios in DC, MD and VA. Let Us Inspire You. Since 1961, Case has designed and built more of the finest kitchens, bathrooms, additions, and interior spaces than any other local remodeler. Our entire focus is turning dreams into reality.
I was relieved there was a quick response to the problem when I called & it was fixed quickly. The company was easy to deal with all round.
Description of Work: I was worried about a bad electrical outlet where I plug in my iron. I discovered an outlet unexpectedly hot to the touch. I had no idea if there might be a dangerous situation in the wall, so my son turned off the electricity to that side of the basement. The Case Handyman came the next day, had everything he needed to rewired the outlet and all was well. I thought the price high, but because the problem was fixed fast, it was worth not calling around to see which firm might be cheaper. Another time I might.

I liked their seminar. I didn’t spend anything. They were very professional. I didn’t dislike anything. I enjoyed my visit and I did learn quite a bit. I even made an appointment, but I had to cancel it. So, there was nothing, but I may probably reschedule with them when my work permits it. I don’t know about their quality, but the seminar went very well. However, the quality of their seminar was very nice. The quality of their showroom was good since they had quality items in there. When I was requesting for a little brochure, they were very responsive and gave it to me immediately. They were very punctual in starting their seminar. They were certainly hands down. I would consider using them in the future.
Description of Work: I had an interaction with Case Design/Remodeling Inc. on September 17th. I attended their kitchen and bath seminar to learn about their process.

We did not have a large budget for renovating our outdated kitchen. In previously owned homes, we have done the majority of kitchen renovations on our own and/or using Home Depot. However, with this renovation we wanted on-going access to a certified kitchen designer, ability to access higher-end materials, and we wanted someone else to manage the process and maintain accountability (I am quite pregnant, so serving as both labor & general contractor wasn't an option this time around). We interviewed several local design-build firms and, oddly enough, were told outright by many that our budget wouldn't get us anything (we had a $50,000 budget for the kitchen but were planning to manage/finance demolition, appliances, hardware/light fixtures, and flooring via a separate source of funds). Case was the only firm that came in with a "can-do" attitude and immediately provided us with great ideas for maximizing our budget AND getting the kitchen of our dreams. I cannot commend Mike O'Hearn enough for being so positive and helpful as we sorted through our initial decision-making process. Although our renovation process took longer than I would have liked at 3.5 months (it took us some time to settle on a design we liked and then a full 6 weeks for our cabinets to be constructed - the actual labor part was only 6 or so weeks), the Case team was SO professional, meticulous, pleasant, effective that I really cannot complain. Literally, everything was done to the absolute highest standard and every member of the team bent over backwards to ensure our house stayed clean/dust-free and that we were inconvenienced by the daily construction as little as possible (not unusual to see contractors/subcontractors vacuuming the house at 6:00 p.m.). Whenever unforeseen problems arose (as they always do in a renovation process), Case was quick to come up with a cost-effective solution. Anything we asked them to do along the way, they worked into our project immediately. Team members even gave gifts to my toddler son and filled my dogs water bowl! In the end, it is amazing to see that my dream kitchen - long carried in my mind's eye - is now a reality and I owe it all to Case and their meticulous design-build process. You pay for this level of service, no doubt about it, but in this case (no pun intended), I got what I paid for and I am so grateful! Kudos to Kevin Morrissey and team for a job well-done.
Description of Work: Case designed and completely renovated our kitchen (soup to nuts). We also used them to renovate our powder room, provide drywall repair, plumbing/electrical upgrades, and create a mounting for our flatscreen TV.

initially wanted an entrance door adjusted and some outside holes (made by squirrels) patched. I was impressed by Dick Oetner (Case representative who during a quoting session, diagnosed a problem that I had (nothing to do with the entrance door) - kitchen cabinet door that would not close properly and provided an advice that in two minutes, fixed the problem and did not cost anything... let me say that this problem stomped my previous contractor whom I hired to refinish the cabinet... and that one did a good job on the refinishing but failed to fix the closure issue). I was impressed with Dick.s knowledge as well as being helpful with no string attached. I ended up painting all the exterior wood and replaced quite a bit of rotten wood due to weathering with the composite wood. I trust their work so much that I am planning more work for case to do to fix up my house.I have had many home improvement contractor and Case is as good as they come. First the one (Dick Oetner) quoting the job (typically a sales and marketing type for other company) is very knowledgeable and knows the technical details, very thorough and cover every aspect of the problem including taking photo, documenting in details, walk through not only with me but also with one doing the job (so important in handyman type job). In addition, they are also very responsive and accomplished what they promised exactly with no hype. This is rare. I wanted the siding stained by a certain stain that only available in California, they ordered it and got it done. What is important to me also was to get it done with certain completion date. They are one of the rare contractor that actually get the job done on time and as promised. The door adjustment that started this job was done in a very professional manner and my wife was very pleased... and I know she has an ultra high standard. Considering the top quality work, timely delivery and know what they are doing, the price is fairly competitive. I consider finding this company a great find and one can rest easy dealing with a trustworthy company in the home improvement world.
Description of Work: I had my main entrance door adjusted, all the outside holes (several areas dug by squirrels fixed, all rotten wood (closed to 40 linear feet.. some at two story level, some corner boxes) replaced by composite, all exterior painted and one cedar siding stained (all double coated).

We were a little concerned with hiring Case a second time. They had worked very well with us on our complete kitchen renovation. The design process was excellent. But there were some bumps over choice of materials and painting (which they would not do) that caused us to split the contract with a second company. The biggest concern we had was that their job costs ran considerably over their estimate. Overall their quality of work and professionalism was high though, so, for a small job (building closets from an alcove and some other minor repairs) we hired them again. Their work was professional again and the quality excellent - including a willingness to make multiple adjustments when we were not satisfied. For a second time, though their price came over estimate. This time I had asked for time and materials so that I could see hours charged to activities. Too many hours were charged for simple electrical work. I have a concern that the hours charged for the drywall construction were padded. So we will not use them again. We recognize the quality of work, really appreciate the design of our kitchen but seriously question their billing and estimating practices
Description of Work: In this second job Case built closets from an alcove, replaced a timer switch in a bathroom, replaced a ceiling fixture, replaced an attic fan, and adjusted the angle of our refrigerator (under warranty from earlier work)
I continue to be very pleased with both the process and outcome of Case's work. For the latest project, I called Case in a state of dismay about how the former contractor left my porch project. Case staff was very responsive and sent a skilled estimator to look over the project situation, and within 2 days I had a written estimate of the repairs needed and a scheduled time for performance of the work. The carpenter, Glenn, was very skilled and professional, and in a matter of days all of the repair work was completed and looked great. There was one lingering issue on the fit of closet doors, and about a week later, I conferred with Case staff and Glenn, and he came out and resolved the fit problem with an innovative and practical solution. Case is great because their building staff is very skilled, their project estimating and oversight is hands-on and professional, and their work is guaranteed. My building site has always been left cleaned up and safe, and the workers are prompt and courteous. Case may seem a bit more expensive, but it is well worth it for the high quality of their work and the professionalism of the supporting business processes.
Description of Work: We have worked with Case Design and Remodeling - Handyman Division - several times over the past 15 years, for projects ranging from a complete design build of a large screened porch (and its rebuild due to severe storm damage several years later!!) to installation of ceiling fans. The latest project was with the FRED handyman division for repairs on an exterior porch and related finishing of the adjacent foyer area. This project was to remedy shortcomings and incomplete work done by another contractor. The project required carpentry work, including interior and exterior trim, finishing installation of exterior doors and hardware, drywall and fitting and installation of closet doors.

The salespeople they send seem to be very good listeners. They are responsive and respectful, and they take their time with me. They were excellent when I asked them for drawings for a pergola. I didn’t ask them to complete the work because it wasn’t a good time for me, but I appreciated the time they spent.
Description of Work: I’ve used their painting services in the past, and they’ve fixed French doors and 3 different other door problems. I might be contacting for some more painting work and some exterior woodwork decay repair.

You have to pay up front the $1000 fee for them to do the sketch, a couple of ideas, measure the rooms and put together a proposal and design. The service was average. They would have been remodeling the kitchen and a porch. We didn't get everything we expected from that $1000 and we thought they had some very uninspired ideas for remodeling. We felt like the didn't fully listen to us when we explained what was important to us as customers. One of the key factors was integrating some new windows into the house and they didn't have the specific information on windows that we requested. They were willing to work with us on it but we were so uninspired by what they were offering that we didn't follow up. After the initial interview they told us that they would be back to us in 4 weeks and they didn't get back to us until 8 weeks and that was only after we called and pestered them.
Description of Work: Case Design/Remodeling Inc gave us an estimate for a renovation to our house.

I put out a very general request for a proposal to about 5 or 6 companies to take down the walls. Case responded almost immediately. Within a day or two a sales rep., Chuck Khiel, from the company came by to do the estimate. He explained the scope, process, and timeline well and he seemed very knowledgeable. The visit was on a Friday afternoon. He had the detailed quote to me by Tuesday at 6:40am. The quote was clear as crystal. I got another quote from a contractor who works by himself but is fully licensed and insured for about $3,300 for the entire job. This other contractor is currently doing my coworker's 3 bathrooms and probably works at a much slower pace, and perhaps skips steps like having a lead inspector on-site, fully sealing all areas that might have lead paint, etc. The lower bid contractor's quote took much longer to get and he'll probably take longer than he states in his quote. In short, I'm sure Case would do an awesome, timely, by-the-book, rules-according-to-Hoyle job, with specialized electricitions, carpenters, etc. when needed, but at a SUBSTANTIAL cost (i.e. 3x the cost). I'm willing to go the slower, perhaps less by-the-book route by a contractor that I trust because I've seen his work.
Description of Work: Received a Quote to remove a 10 SF load-bearing wall between kitchen in living room, scale back a non load-bearing wall 3 feet, and convert a non load-bearing wall into a knee wall. Movement of 3 switches/outlets, and an air vent was included in the quotes. The load-bearing wall was over $5,000 and the remaining two walls came in at over $5,000 to make the total over $10,000.

We didn't end up using Case because they were out of our budget range.
Description of Work: We were looking to do a total bathroom remodel. It would be considered the Case "3 step" process. They were very nice and very helpful. The whole project was just a bit more expensive than we thought. They were extremely careful in measurements, a critical step of the procedure, since even being off a few quarters of an inch would have caused serious problems. They measured not once, but THREE times. The work was fantastic.. Case is very polite and tidy, always cleaning up after each day of work. I loved their design and the fixtures they suggested for me. I couldn't be happier, and it really added to the value of my home.
Description of Work: I wanted to put a full bath in my semi finished basement. I had basic sink plumbing but wanted to add a toilet and shower. Space was VERY tight, and they came up with a very nice design. They had to add the sewer line through the concrete basement, put in extensive dry wall, flooring, ceiling.

When I first contacted Case Design for handyman services on 23 May 2011 I spoke with Steve Owen who noted that he would be my point of contact. It is nice for a change to have a person to reach out to with questions or concerns. He asked what could he do for me and I began rattling off just a few things that had been on my list of things to do. As a single female home owner, my list has grown over the four years I have been in my home, so, after about the third item on my list, Steve indicated that based on what I had already told him, the work would be done on a Time and Materials basis which was less expensive than the per hour charge. In response to my inquiry to additional tasks to tackle, Steve said that since it is Time and Materials, I could have the craftsman complete other items on my list. He also understood what repairs needed to be done because as he explained to me, he used to do the work. So, we arranged for a craftsman to come to my home at noon on 10 June. Sure enough, the craftsman, Mr. Doug Moore, not only showed up on time but he was at my front door about 15 minutes before noon ready to go to work. I pointed out about 13 different things requiring attention: from hanging a picture, repairing a loose toilet, caulking tub & sink, repairing stove/oven, replacing bedroom bi-fold closet door (which he had to use a saw to cut to fit), repairing a closet shelf, to replacing over the sink light in the kitchen. Mr. Moore was a real trooper because he was at it for about 4 1/2 hours despite the fact that my air conditioning was out of whack and it was extremely hot and humid. He marched right on with a smile and without complaint. Moreover, for the cracked basement window that he could not repair, he gave me the name and number of someone that could help me. It has been a struggle to find a handyman and other technicians that service my area and that also do great work, so, I was concerned about working with Case. I am more than happy with my experience from my initial contact with Steve to the completed Mr. Moore's work. I would use their services again. Great job Case Design!

Had a walk through the day before the installation of the hood which was thorough. The next day the carpenter and electrician showed on time. The floors were covered so the workmen's boots would scratch the floor and the counter tops as well. The project took one and half days to complete. The carpenter was creative in solving the problem of how to vent to the outside. We are very satisfied with the work and the price. The representative from CASE's handyman division was Steve Magill. He was easy to work with and was willing to work within our budget. The division of CASE that does small jobs is now called FRED. Didn't find FRED on the search, which is why I choose to put this report under CASE Handyman Services.
Description of Work: Install a hood over the range. Move the electrical outlet for the hood. Vent the hood to the outside. Repair the drywall to paint ready.
