Estimator was great in the store and when he came out. After I ordered the windows, there was a couple months waiting period and I received no communication from them. On Monday when windows/doors were scheduled to start, they called to say they may not be able to make it since some siding had not come in. But they did show up and got the job done in a week. They realized they used the wrong trim on front of the house and redid that on their own. But they also didn't give me enough info on what size doorknobs/locks to buy - I bought wrong size and that delayed final completion. The product is great; installation crew was great; but overall communication on project status was poor. I expected alot more for this amount of money. I even filled out their survey form after the job was done; told them about my issues - and NEVER heard back from anyone.

Salesman met our request for evening visit for estimate, 8/12/09. He was pulled away to speak with another customer during initial discussion, so substituted upgrade to clear-view screens on all street side windows by way of apology. Prices were as advertised, very competitive, no bait-and-switch, no surprises. Good advice, changing from triples of individual windows to combined unit, much better air seal and appearance. Project/job manager visited to go over installation plans, extremely professional. Reminded to save all stickers for tax records on energy star windows. Installation was carried out quickly and efficiently (two days), minimal intrusion, great cleanup. Busy season, so six weeks from start to finish: order, manufacturing, to installation. Competitive price, looks great, much more comfortable and no leaks/problems after a year installed with a lot of extreme weather -- wind and driving rain.
Description of Work: Installed 13 Pella Pro-line double-hung, Energy-star replacement windows, with screens. Provided, stained, and installed interior trim to match existing woodwork.

The salesman told us he worked for Pella. We ordered the expensive doors with invisible screens and was promised they would be installed in six weeks. After the allotted time went by, we called and discovered they hadn't even began making the doors yet. So we called Pella Corporate Headquarters in Iowa and discovered they are just a warehouse and that we had to deal with the contractor, KC Company. Finally, we had our doors installed but they did not know anything about the screens. They were also supposed to key the locks to make them the same as our other doors. Today, we found out that Pella doesn't even make the screen doors and they want us to go to an outside company. KC Company has already charged our credit card for over $1,000 each for the screens. Please do not order fromt his company.

Work was planned to be completed in one day. First day, progress to remove/replace windows went OK for a while, although quite a bit of superficial dents and dings occurred on room wall and shutters. The installers encountered a lot of problems trying to re-install the original shutters, since this required sawing off to re-size them to new window frames. Also, had difficulty making shutters closable and hang straight. We contacted Rebecca Light in customer service, and together with our service contact (Aaron), arrangements were made for expert craftsmen to come in following day to complete the job properly. These were true professionals, who fixed and repainted all dents, and left the windows and re-hung shutters in perfect shape. This totally changed our overall impression from discouraged to highly pleased. The extra day's effort was totally worth it and was all done within the cost estimate provided..
Description of Work: Removed and replaced two large, double pane windows, approx 8 ft wide by 6 ft high, painted inside and out, including removable mullions. Removed, re-sized, and re-installed original plantation shutters to fit new window frames. (Original Pella windows were about 16 years old, and developed mold between two panes that hampered visibility).

I wanted to replace my french doors. Went to the Pella website and submitted a request to have a consultant come to my home. The consultant called me and said it would be better if I came to mthe store since I could see all the options, etc. I did that. At the store the salesman acted like I was bothering him and wasting his time. Very bad attitude. I asked him for a quote and her just mentioned a figure. I said I would like an written estimate with all the options I had chosen so i could be sure I was getting quoted for exactly what I wanted. He said that he would but then he came back and said his printer didnt work. He said that if I left my name and address the company would mail me a quote in 2 weeks. I told him that I wanted to buy this this weekend, and he said "we'll you're not going to to do it today because we close in two hours". SERIOUSLY? This was an estimated $12,000 job but needless to say they did not get the job.

Ten years ago, KC Company replaced all of the windows and doors in our house. They were brought in by our contractor, BOWA Builders. Five years ago, we hired KC Company to replace five windows and a set of french doors for us, in a new house. We were happy with their work, and the whole experience. Recently, we thought we would replace the remaining windows and doors in the house. We worked with the sales person and did not move forward with the project because in the end, it was more than we wanted to spend at this time. We opted to fix up what we have for the short term, wait another year or two, save a little more, and do the project then. When we are ready to do this, we will return to KC Company. They are the exclusive distributor of Pella windows and doors, which we prefer to use. They have always provided top-notch service to us, from the sales to the install and follow-up.
Description of Work: KC Company replaced all of the windows in our previous home, and several of the windows and doors in our current home. Our most recent interaction was a sales consultation, measurement and quote.

Pella seemed to have a nice product and i think the price quote was fair. It seemed like we could have talked him down a little more but not a ton. (my guess is about a few hundred maybe 500) The main reason we chose a different company which is a little more expensive is because of some of the options and overall confidence. From an options stand point for the fiberglass windows the color on the inside and outside must be the same. Additionally there were no option for the screens that you can see through easier. For internal window installations (which was required on 2 windows because of window bars) they replace the trim and we would have to paint it. Lastly, my building is a historic landmark and while only the windows on the front are required to follow the historic standards a permit is still required which Pella told us it wasn't. Overall, I think Pella does offer a great product as long as these smaller things don't bother you and given the right property I would still consider them. One positive to be noted is that their initial price was right around where it should have been. The company that we have selected definitely over priced initially and had to be negotiated with to reduce the price by about $1500. I definitely appreciate companies that just tell you a fair price right away.
Description of Work: Pella came out and gave us an estimate on 7 double hung fiberglass windows for our condo. The guy was nice and professional. They also have options for Vinyl and Wood windows. though many of the features like the fancier screens and the better hanging mechanism are only available on the wood.

In November 2009 a representative from KC Company, Inc. came to my town house for formal measurements. KC Company provides installations for Pella in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. A Mr. Moreland stated the reinstallation of the existing rear storm door would be difficult, but never was it stated that the work could not be performed. After a delay of two weeks the front door, front storm door, and rear doors were scheduled for installation on 23 December. The installation team showed up that morning. Prior to installation the existing front door, rear storm door, and rear door were removed. During the removal of the rear storm door, I watched as a number of the frame parts were damaged and kinked. During the installation I watched as the team from KC installed the front threshold improperly and had to remove it and reinstall it. Later, the team installed the framing for the front storm door incorrectly with the latch on the wrong side. During my periodic installation watches I noticed this and told them that they were not installing the storm door properly. The team looked at me like I had no right to say anything. Then they stopped and realized that I was correct. They had to take the framing down and reinstall it properly. By this time I was growing increasingly concerned. In addition to the above, the KC team almost threw out the brass covering for one of the door locks. I had to go through the trash bag that the team had to find it, and placed it on the lock. The team provided me no assistance or apology for this. It finally came time to re-install the rear storm door. With a quick look the team informed me that the rear storm door did not fit any more, and could not be reinstalled. I stated that I had been told the door could be reinstalled and that I had paid for it to be reinstalled. The team stated no. They stated that I would need to talk to their company. I signed the installation papers with a comment of dissatisfaction and asked to be called. The team asked where I wanted to place the rear storm door. I asked them to place it in the garage. They did so. I called the KC Company, Inc. the next day. I was told that the regional manager Mr. Moreland was on vacation. But, I scheduled a date for him to come and talk to me. In the mean time I realized that the front door had a draft coming from underneath . The lower flap for the front storm door had also not been installed properly. You could see out under the bottom of the front storm door. On 8 January Mr. Moreland and I met. He took measurements and assured me that the rear storm door could be reinstalled. He stated that he would come with the installation team to ensure that the rear storm door was reinstalled properly. He also adjusted the threshold for the front door. However, he stated that he did not want to adjust it too much or it would affect the sweep. Mr. Moreland stated that he would have the team adjust the lower flap on the storm door the same time that the rear storm door was reinstalled. On 29 January 2010 a different team of men from the first from KC Company Inc. showed up to reinstall the rear storm door. Mr. Moreland was not present. The team stated that Mr. Moreland would arrive later. After taking some measurements, the team assured me that the storm door would be reinstalled. During the installation one of the team asked about the storm door closer. I told him that there was one with the door. He stated that it wasn?t good enough, and that there should be two on them. I told him that the door only had one, and that it worked fine. I stated that he should use the one provided. Some time later after adjusting the flap for the front door the team stated that they were finish. They provided no inspection, and appeared to be in a hurry. They quickly made me sign the installation papers, and they left. As they were leaving I finally got the opportunity to look at the re-installation. The workmanship was slip-shoddy and amateurish. The originally storm door closer had been replaced with another and had been installed in a very unprofessional manner. The door was now crooked. The door did not close all the way onto the frame leaving a gap at the top of the door. The latch had been rig to catch on the frame and not the proper latch bar. The frame no longer met at the top with a large gap. The trim to cover the screws of the frame had not been re-installed and one piece was completely missing. And, Mr. Moreland never showed. Nor did Mr. Moreland call. I never heard from him. I am very dissatisfied with the installation of the doors. By the way, I still have an air draft under the front door. Pella may make quality products, but the company that they have contracted with to provide the installation of their doors in the Washington DC region does not know the meaning of quality. Nor do they understand the meaning of doing a good job. I would recommend that anyone thinking about replacement doors in this region not to contract with Pella/KC Company, Inc. Use someone else.
Description of Work: I purchased and contracted with Pella in October of 2009 to provide a replacement front door with side lights, a new front storm door, and a rear exterior door. I selected Pella because of their ability to provide replace doors that matched with the doors that had been installed originally with my townhouse. Due to townhouse covenants I was required to maintain the same look and feel. When I contracted with Pella I also paid for the reinstallation of an existing rear storm door. The rear storm door had been purchase a few years prior, and had cost some amount of money. At the time of contract, I was told by the Pella representative that there would be no problem reinstalling the existing rear storm door. The representative stated that they would install a new door knocker on the front door. Since I wanted to retain the same key, I would provide the lock hardware for both the front and back door. The existing hardware would not work.

Approximately two weeks later, the caulk shrunk and one of the trim pieces had split due to a misplaced nail. A second trim piece seemed to separate at the mid-section. I called and they immediately sent someone out and scheduled a fix. This is the second time we've had KC Company here and the second time we've had them back to correct a faulty installation. They are always very polite, very professional. However, I'm now taking a second day off from work to have them correct what should have been done correctly the first time. I have a number of windows that still need to be replaced. I would have to think twice about hiring them again.
Description of Work: We had a bay window replaced in the family room. The most expensive estimate (wood) was cheaper than the most expensive estimate by Anderson (by about $2,200). Everything went smoothly except for the overall quality of the install. I should say that I watched the installation and expressed concern about the rough cuts of the trim work. I was assure everything would look great and it would all be caulked and nothing would show. It did indeed look fine when they left.

The quality of their products is good, but they could have done a better job in communicating with me before as well as after the job. They had scheduled a date with me and it was going to start on a Monday. I had worked very hard to get everything ready because I was going to have all my windows replaced. I got a voice mail on late Friday afternoon saying that they may not be able to start on Monday, as some of the parts weren't in. So, I wasn't happy and I never heard from them again. However, they actually showed up on Monday. I spent the weekend wondering if they were going to show up or not. Nobody ever called me over the weekend and I had also taken an off on Monday. I had also ordered 2 doors and I had to buy the handles. They never told me about the size or anything. So, I got the wrong sized handle for one of the doors and I had to redo everything while they were here. It was poor communication and customer service on their part. They did send me a survey asking about my experience with them. I answered the survey and gave them all the information. They never responded back to my comments when I mentioned everything in the survey. I wouldn't use their services in the future.

The delivery of the seven sliders was scheduled for 9-12 AM on 11/19. The KC-Pella truck showed up at 9:30 AM. Only a driver was on the truck. There was no other person to assist in unloading the sliders, which weight several hundred pounds apiece. The driver opened the rear doors of the truck and it was completely empty. The driver called the KC shipping warehouse in Beltsville and was told to return to pick up the seven missing sliders. Four hours later, he returned with only three of the sliders. Meanwhile, I have a special window contractor lined up to install the seven sliders but only three have been delivered. My calls to the KC-Pella salesman went unanswered. Feeling very frustrated, I went to the local KC-Pella retail store in Falls Church on Nov. 21 and the sales clerk there called the salesman and then put me on the phone. I explained the total mess and he told me he would call me back later in the afternoon after he checked his emails to determine what went wrong with the delivery. He never called me back. On Monday morning, Nov. 23, I called his boss, left a voice mail message explaining my plight, and he never called me back. I finally got the number of the shipping department in Beltville, gave them a call, and was told they had found the missing four sliders and will deliver them on Nov. 24. I will believe it when they arrive. Based upon my agonizing experience, I can only conclude that KC-Pella is a totally incompetent and rude firm--from the sales staff to the shipping department to the delivery service and the truck driver. Further, the company is so unaccomodating and cheap that they refuse to supply the driver with an assistant to unload the very heavy and bulky merchandise. My advice to anyone one considering doing business with KC-Pella Co---save yourself a lot of grief and take your business elsewhere.
Description of Work: This transaction involved the purchase and delivery of seven Pella Impervia Sliders from "KC Co.-Pella Windows and Doors" through a private contractor. I did not choose to have KC Co--Pella install the sliders because of the extremely low ratings they have received by a local (Washingon, D.C.) rating service.

They were great. They were knowledgeable about their product, Pella Windows, and were responsible and highly professional. When there was a slight imperfection they came right out and replaced the entire window. They really stand by their product. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for and they are excellent. The finish they put on the outside perfectly matches the outside paint. They raised one of the windows to accommodate new flooring. I plan to use them for more replacement windows in the future and I could not be happier with their service.

I wanted to replace some older (1985) double-pane windows with newer, more functional windows. I sought several estimates, but ultimately decided on the most expensive option -- top-of-the-line Pella windows, from their "Desinger Series," the ones with shades or blinds between the panes of glass. I selected the triple-pane option, which are extremely energy-efficient. These windows are not cheap, but I personally think they are worth every penny. The new windows are absolutely superb. I have had them almost two years now, including two winters. They noticeably reduced my winter energy consumption. In fact, the bedroom was so warm after installing these windows that I actually had to turn the thermostat down at night - it was simply too hot in there otherwise because the windows retain heat so well. The windows look great as well. The price includes your choice of finishing, either painting or stain in our preferred color. I chose stained finishes that matched the decor of the various rooms. And although the price for the Designer Series is high, one must remember that it includes built-in "window treatments" - either mini-blinds or shades (top-down or bottom-up, and either light-blocking or translucent), so that is one less thing that you have to buy later. The in-glass window treatments work as advertised - they are reliable, very easy to operate, and never get dirty because they are sandwiched between glass window panes. Mini-blinds are fully adjustable. The light-blocking shades do a great job of keeping the bedroom dark. And the light transmitting shades provide privacy while letting in soft light. The windows are aluminum-clad on the exterior, and this cladding available in a number of custom finishes. I easily found a color finish that closely matched my townhouse association's approved color list. KC Pella was a good company to work with. The original salesman/estimator knew what he was doing, and the work crew that came out to do the installation was great. They did nice work and cleaned up well after themselves. Although they installed during cold weather, they got the job done quickly and efficiently, and didn't leave the house open to the cold December winds for too long. I remember that when I complimented the foreman on his crew's work, he said something like: "Of course we do a good job. You paid a lot for these windows, and you deserve to have everything EXACTLY right." I thought that summed up the company's attitude very nicely. A few months after the install, I called them back for a few minor fixes that were covered under the two-year installation warranty. They came back promtly and cheerfully to fix the small problems (one window that seemed not to seal tightly, and a place where the exterior caulking seemed to have come loose on another). A window is only as good as its installation. I have heard some horror stories about Pella windows, but they generally involved (1) Pella's lower-end vinyl windows that are sold by a big-box retailer, and (2) installation by other companies that may not be so great. In contrast, top of the line Pella windows, installed by a certified dealer like KC Pella, are not cheap but are nevertheless a good value if you want good-looking and nicely-functioning windows. In fact, I liked the windows so much that a few months later, I decided to replace my front and back doors with Pella doors, also installed by KC Pella.
Description of Work: Replaced 11 double-hung windows with Pella Designer Series triple-pane windows with shades or mini-blinds in between the glass. KC Pella removed and disposed of the old windows, and installed the new ones, including new interior trim on two of the windows. I selected pocket replacement, rather than a full-frame tearout (which would have cost a bit more). The price included staining the windows to my preferred finishes.

If you are shopping around, I would recommend asking for an estimate from Pella. My experience was pretty good overall and it was worth having another estimate for comparison.
Description of Work: Dave came out to the house to give an estimate for replacement windows and doors. He was nice and communicated through email which I really appreciated. He measured for 9 double hung, 2 picture, 1 garden, entry door and storm door. The estimate was okay. I never made it to the showroom. I suppose if I have negotiated I might have received a better deal, but didn't. He made an off color remark about my kid's toys that kind of through me off. Anyway, I went with another replacement company.

The company sales representative came out and did a walk-through to get the basic understanding of what I wanted. Then prepared an estimate over the couple of weeks. When I accepted the estimate, a technical representative came out and did another walk-through and explained exactly what the steps were to be and discussed thoroughly what the options were. At that point the windows were ordered and an installation date was agreed upon. The crew came out and over a 4 day period, installed the windows and replaced all the trim.

We went to the office in person and were somewhat put off by the velvety-smooth-but-pushy sales tactics ("why don't we just get the paperwork started now" turned out to mean "why don't you just sign a binding contract for twelve grand right now"). The salesmen's repeated follow-ups by e-mail were much more overtly aggressive and pushy, and after a series of exchanges we finally had to tell him, essentially, to stop contacting us or else. We had been warned that windows could be a high-pressure, unpleasant business, and KC Pella, unfortunately, was the most glaring example of this we encountered by far. Needless to say, we went elsewhere.

They did a terrific job and also disposed of the old windows. They were clean and had the work done when it was cold outside and that is why I got a discount. They handled it room by room, so the entire house did not get cold. Most of the windows had wooded shutters, so they had to take them of and replace it as part of the contract and did a nice job with that as well. The shutters are top of the line and real wood that flip in, so you can wash them from the inside. They came out and measured my windows and gave me a date when they would arrive. They also gave me an address that had a the same kind of windows, so that I can go look at them, and also gave me numbers of people that I can call if I wanted any references. I feel that their prices are on the higher side, but I think it is worth it. The windows they installed are well made and my energy costs have not gone up substantially and they are also sound proof.

I bought Pella windows when I moved into my old rowhouse seven years ago and love them. They are definitely a premium product and are not cheap but you get what you pay for and the quality of their service and manufacture is top notch. When it came time to replace an ancient exterior door Pella was the obvious choice. We were able to negotiate a fairly substantial discount - about 15% - by doing the whole "get up and walk out of the store" negotiation trick - I would suggest doing the same to other buyers, there is plenty of margin on their list pricing. It was still expensive, but this coupled with a 20% repeat customer discount and the tax break from the government for energy efficiency made the project net out to about $3000 - again, expensive, but every aspect of it was top notch. The salesperson was incredibly accomodating, came out to our house to measure, explained in great detail all options and costs, and was just amazingly thorough in documenting our requirements for his installation team. The installation itself happened exactly when scheduled - 3 guys showed up to the minute when they were expected and worked diligently for about 6 hours to tear out the old door down to the masonry and install the new one. They did an amazing job - wore white gloves the whole time (!). The door itself is top notch, we absolutely love it (it is the higher end wood swinging patio door). Pella is an awesome company that upholds the highest standards of quality in service and product. Definitely recommend.

Pella KC Company came to repair the leak above the basement the sliding door and the area around the sliding door 4 times with no success. Still at work trying to solve problem.
Description of Work: Pella KC Company installed 2 premium sliding doors and 1 double set of premium windows. The windows were installed in a breakfast nook that had older ineffient windows. The first sliding door was on the main floor going out to a deck in a townhouse. The second set was directly below the first set as part of the doors on a walkout basement. They completed the install over 2 days with 90% done on the first day. No problems with the installation crew, the breakfast nook windows, or the main floor sliding door. The basement floor sliding door installed fine but later when it rained it leaked from above the door frame.

They arrived early and got right to work. They worked throughout the day into the evening. They did have problems with the lock on the front door so they called someone to get advice on what to do. When they left everything was beautiful. They worked so hard on one of the coldest days of the year. If you want windows or doors replaced I recommend people go to their showroom. I would hire them in the future if needed.
Description of Work: I hired K C Company to put in five windows and two front doors in my front entry. The windows they put in were Pella and the doors were Therma True.
