CroppMetcalfe was good. Overall, they were okay. I had them give me an estimate for a new unit and they were not competitive. I don't plan on using them again as a provider. I found a local guy who's much more reasonable in price. I had a bad experience with CroppMetcalfe with the two guys they sent out. I thought they were honest. I had a problem that they diagnosed as I needed a new system. This local gentleman fixed it very quickly without having to pay for a new system. Overall, they're a good company. I had one bad experience. They call before they show up.

Came to "diagnose" a hot water heater that had tripped off due to flammable vapor sensor. -- we knew that already because the computer on the heater tells you that's what is wrong. Tech said nothing can be done. Probably a bad sensor, order a new one. We got a new sensor - DAYS later (holiday weekend) new sensor came in (which we never needed, first worked fine) nothing. I called a competitor who said he didn't need to come out, gave me a tech support number and said that there is usually a reboot code that needs to be input. Called tech services, they walked me through the reboot and it was up and running in 2 minutes. You would think that a service technician would know that you need to reboot the sensor (his competitor did) instantly. Lot of cold showers and $100 for no reason. ALSO called to register a complain about paying for a diagnosis that was WRONG. Have made 5/6 calls to the company. I got one VM back 3 weeks ago but I've now made 3 additional attempts to call and gotten no response.

Their repair people are intelligent who I can generally understand. They all seem to know what they're doing. Even though I pay a lot for my contract, they do everything, I can call them at 2am if there's a problem and they come out 2x a year to service my system. They're reliable, come when they say they will, and do a good job.

I just finished some remodeling on an old condo we purchased less than a year ago. We just wrapped up the remodeling and it was time to get the air ducts cleaned, something the previous owner hadn't done for many years. I previously used Cropp Metcalfe for years on my Silver Spring home. Now that I lived in DC, it seemed like a good idea to continue using them. Since I had Cropp Metcalfe (CM) perform air duct cleaning for us in our MD house I expected a similar process on our condo which is the same square footage. Also, because CM is a member of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA), I expected that the process of cleaning the registers, ducts, intake, blower and supply would be outlined by their certifying agency. It was not. When CM cleaned the air ducts in my house, they sealed off all the air ducts except the one they were working on, and used a device inside the duct to agitate and remove the buildup of dust. When they cleaned my condo's air ducts, the "5 Star" technician used compressed air only at opening of the register but did not tape off the other registers. I had opened all but four of the registers since I'm preparing to paint. The technician not only did not close/tape-off the registers, but he did not remove the registers that were still attached. He spent in total one hour and forty minutes and less than an hour of that was in cleaning. When I inquired about the germicide that should be applied to the ducts he didn't suggest doing it since it's only applied to the coil, and because the coil wasn't dirty. ALL of the steps the technician took are not in compliance with NADCA's guidelines, or any other local company out there. The technician was polite and considerate, but that's only part of what's required. When I pay a premium for service, I expect a company to deliver on that promise.

I was scheduled for my air conditioning unit tune-up between 2 and 4 but the technician didn't show up until about 6. He did let me know that he was running late however. I commend the tech for his professionalism, thoroughness, and pleasantness. He completed the job quickly, answered all my questions, and explained a few things that I was unaware of. He made one recommendation to have the indoor coil cleaned for $325 but didn't press the issue because my unit was about 20 years old. He also informed me that my 20 year old water heater was leaking. I asked him if Cropp Metcalf also did plumbing and he said yes. He called back to the home office and got an estimate of $1,400 on a new water heater for me. At first I said I would like to make an appointment but later found that I could get a new one for under $1,000. So, I cancelled. Nevertheless, I was glad the tech brought it to my attention.

Two "second opinions" said it was repairable for $3-4K, but did not recommend it because the G was not right for the usage and better stuff was now available. They also advised that the installation was seriously deficient. One termed it an accident waiting to happen. He couldn't believe Montgomery County had passed it. I Contacted the county and was told they had "permitted" the installation, but had never been called back to actually inspect it. I confronted a C-M supervisor with this info. She came out with a tech and said the installation was fine, and that not getting it inspected did not matter. Later I learned that Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission had to have permitted and the passed the gas part of the installation. I learned from WSSC that they had permitted and then inspected it, but had not approved it. Also, I was told that no warranty could begin to run until there had been an approved inspection, a fact subsequently confirmed by a C-M manager. C-M, however, refuses to do more--after all their apparent dishonesty and/or incompetence--than to get the 5-yr old generator through the inspections--the same generator they called unrepairable. I cannot be made whole by this. The matter is ongoing. Heating & A/C Service Review: I have had a service contract with them for year and was very satisfied. They always came on time and got things fixed promptly within the service contract. This winter they came out to service one of my furnaces. The technician said I needed a part and I would have it in a couple days. Then about 5 days later another technician came out and when he looked at the system he said it was shot and the part wouldn't fix it. He said I would need to get a new system all together. I had a salesman come out and I was quoted $12,500 for 2 high efficiency furnaces. I called another company to get a comparison. They came out and he looked at my system and gave me a quote of $7,500, but the system was different than what CroppMetcalfe was offering. When I asked the technician from the other company why he would give me a price on the same system, he told me that they system CroppMetcalfe was trying to sell me couldn't be used in my home in tandem. So I went back to CroppMetcalfe and they did some research and they said, I guess you can't use them in that way. So they said they would knock off $1000 on the bill. I told them the second opinion could offer me $7500, so then CroppMetcalfe could come down to $9000. I then got a third opinion and they were able to get my work done for $5700. I still have the service contract with CroppMetcalfe so I called them to do my seasonal checkup. The technician said that we had a bad leak in the compressor and would need to get it replaced. Again, I had another company look at it and there was no leak, it was most likely some external source that had superficial damage to the coil.
Description of Work: Installed a standby generator in Jan 09. Paid for in full then as a completed job. For next 3.5 years it was "in service" 48-60 hours. 2 hours into the electrical outage from the June 2012 "derecho" storm the generator stopped working. 3 days later the C-M technician told me the stator had burned out, that these things happened sometimes, that it was repairable and that I needed to buy a new one.

From the first call to report the problem, at about 8 a.m. this morning, the CroppMetcalfe staff were pleasant, helpful and prompt. Mr. Diaz arrived precisely at the time projected and was efficient and thorough. He carefully and clearly explained the problem and what to expect. He also answered questions regarding how the air filtration system worked -- doing above and beyond the call of duty. I would highly recommend this company, and Mr. Diaz. The company had been recommended by a neighbor, who was also very satisfied.
Description of Work: Heating system was not working; Jason Diaz inspected the system and immediately identified the problem and ordered the part.

It's been about three months ago they came here. The guy checked the system, the heating system and replaced the air filter. They come out every three months to check the heating or air conditioning system and do work on it.They did everything full maintenance, capacitors and condenser. We have the 'gold' plan with them that means they come out anytime day or night and fix things. It came up to eight hundred and ninety two dollars and ninety five cents, service policy savings six hundred and fifty eight dollars and ninety five cents. So we ended up paying two hundred and thirty four dollars and that's because we have that plan. We pay only a few hundred dollars a year that they come out and you are not charged as much as an ordinary caller. We make a saving of six hundred and fifty eight dollars and they come at all times of night, all you have to do is call them. As soon as you call and say I've got the 'gold' plan they come right away, that day maybe within the hour. They don't put you off they come straight to your home, they fix the problem at a big discount. Plus when they come out for the maintenance in the summer, that's when they don't charge because we have the 'gold' plan, I think we pay about three hundred dollars a year for that plan but when they come out to service your units and things there is no charge. You save a lot on that plan. Some of the stuff can be expensive, then again they are expensive but they are well worth it. It's not cheap but they have done all kinds of work for us, they are big down here where we live. They are a very good company, very good! They have done our plumbing, air conditioning, the air vac they fixed our heater; put different things on it to make it more efficient in case of leaks or something. They even came and had to dig up our whole front yard, that was expensive. What had happened, when they built these homes one of the contractors dropped a piece of marble down the pipe. Over the years and then the toilet would back up every once in a while, we just thought it was toilet paper and one day it backed up and wouldn't go down. They had to come out, they ran a TV camera down the line and showed us the blockage. unfortunately the blockage was in front of the house and they had to dig up the yard to get the pipe, when he got to the pipe; I was standing right there when he pulled it out, it was a big slab of marble that somebody had dropped in the pipe and that cost us five thousand dollars to get out. They had to dig a hole in the living room floor to get to the pipe. They have a certain tool that they can tell you where your different pipes run under your house and they had to tear up the living room floor to find that the blockage was further down the line. They did a good job, they always do a good job. They have replace things, repaired things, all the plumbing, heating air conditioning work in the house they have done. They were recommended to me by one of my wife's co-workers and he was right, he said they might be a bit expensive but they are well worth it. Everybody uses them down here.

Monday, January 6, 2014 Today we had a service visit from Mr. Maurice Jackson of the Beltsville office of CroppMetcalfe. Whatever this man is making, it's not enough. This company has been servicing our heating and a/c for many years. Since we moved into our house in 1994, there have been problems with the thermostats. In the past year two technicians have kindly given us new, simpler thermostats; both were free and one replaced the upstairs thermostat, the other the downstairs one. While we used the downstairs thermostat primarily for the winter (heat), we used the upstairs primarily for the summer (a/c). We synchronized the thermostats, setting both at the same level. Every time we adjusted one, we adjusted the other. Even so, we were getting inaccurate heating. Thus, I had to set the thermostats four degrees or so higher in order to get the desired temperature downstairs. We were very cold downstairs. Mr. Jackson was able to diagnose the problem brilliantly. He did several impressive experiments and finally concluded, as follows: The problem stemmed from the synchronization. As heat rises, the upstairs got warmer quicker. Since the upstairs thermostat was set at "on", when the desired temperature was reached upstairs, the furnace shut off. The downstairs remained cold -- 4 degrees or so below upstairs. So, Mr. Jackson explained the error that we had been building into our setting of the two thermostats. Second, he was able to find very old wires, buried deep in the wall, I believe, not previously seen or certainly remarked upon by technicians. These old wires were half of the current number but colored similarly. Thus, improper articulation between the old and the new wiring was messing up the proper functioning of the thermostats. Once he had diagnosed the problem, Mr. Jackson set about correcting it. He did so and we now have the temperature we want. He told us to keep the upstairs thermostat at "off" during the winter and the downstairs thermostat at "off" in the summer. He told us how to use the fan, regulated within the upstairs thermostat. This man showed up promptly at 8 a.m. and left almost three and a half hours later. How impressive. The charge for all this diagnosis and correction was zero because we have an annually-renewed Gold Service Policy -- well worth the reasonable cost. The calculated cost of today's service alone would have exceeded the cost of the Gold Service Policy had we not purchased it. We have stuck with CroppMetcalfe for HVAC because its technicians are so good and because the company's response at moments of need is also excellent. But nothing equals the brilliant analysis and successful repair of our system that Mr. Jackson carried out today. It was masterful.

It was a good experience. They helped us out since we had some air conditioner problems. They were actually really good. It was expensive because we had to replace the entire unit. We were looking for a replacement of the unit and they were the closest repair place that worked on the type of unit that we had so we went with them. They actually talked to us and they worked up some different prices and we were able to make a decision as opposed to some folks that just wanted to come in and tell us what was going to happen to the unit that we had. The unit has been perfect since they did the replacement. Their pricing was also okay. I would definitely use them again in the future and I recommended them to a couple of other people.

We have always used Adams Heating & Cooling, but they were recently bought out by Cropp Metcalfe. As it was an emergency, I went ahead and had them take care of us as they still had our old paperwork. The first guy who came out was a bit pushy and not very polite. He insisted we had an old system with a SEER rating of 10 - which was outdated and it should be at least a 13. I looked at our original paperwork and it was a SEER13. He did a workaround until the circuit board could be ordered. Happily, it came in 2 days later and a very nice guy came and replaced it. He did not try to tell us anything about our current unit - just quickly replaced the board and saw that it was working. I will use someone else that was recommended by a co-worker next time.

The experience was awful. First problem was the no show, and I had to reschedule (they had a 12 hour window, we waited all day...but no luck). Second problem was they finally did come the second time, they showed up at 10PM. Truly amazing. Third problem was the diagnosis was not credible (non-functional transformer for AC, but no visible signs of damage). Fourth problem was gouging: they wanted $206 for a part that costs $25 (I priced this at an electrical supply stor). In addition to this, they wanted to replace a thermostat that was working fine, and this at a cost of $200. These things cost $20 tops at Home Depot. Bottom line, I would not trust these guys. Service was horrible.

I would give Cropp-Metcalfe A+.
Description of Work: We had a terrible clog in our drain pipes steming from our bathtub. We have a home shield insurance that we called first and the sent a plumbing company. They were unable to reach the clog with the usual snake, and told us that it required a specialized snake that they did not have. Evidently, this special snake was only used in commercial applications. Our brother-in-law works for Cropp-Metcalfe and after a call to him, we found out that they did plumbing work. Now this is after about 50 calls to lots of plumbers who couldn't do the job. We called Cropp-Metcalfe in the morning, told them the problem and they sent two gentlemen who went right to work AND cleared the clog within 15 minutes. Very clean, professional and extremely prompt and knowledgeable. We will always recommend Cropp-Metcalfe for any plumbing problems we may have. Because of their excellent work, we now have a contract with them for any other problems that should come up.
