I recently purchased my 2nd new (very old) home. This home had 2 sump pumps installed. The inspector reported that the sump pumps were working, however, I have never even seen a sump pump. I purchased a sump pump tune up for 1 sump pump because I was worried about it being clogged and etc. The technician came, he was very professional serviced the sump pump I was worried about and also checked the sump pump I was not concerned about. He gave me the run down about the back-up battery and how often they should be replaced. He told me that both pumps look pretty new, however, he suggested that I keep an eye on it because I do not know the age of the pumps. Overall, I would use this company again.

It took a couple of phone calls to schedule the appointment. He said he could come out to do the tune up but if I needed to replace the pump, it would be an additional $500. The $500 was after a 50% discount that was offered within the deal. I did some research after and found that I can replace the pump for much less with another company.

I had some concerns regarding the sump pump in our house. Since we have only been here a little of a year, I did not know the history of the existing sump pump, for example how old it was, how good a pump it was, etc. I also did not like certain aspects of how it worked. When I saw the "Big Deal" on Angie's List, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to have it checked out. Aquaguard called me within a couple of days of my purchase of the Big Deal and we set up an appointment for the inspection. The representative, Mark, showed up on time and went right to work. He answered my questions, showed me things about how my sump pump was installed that concerned him and explained why it concerned him. After listening to Mark, I agreed that the best option was to have the existing pump replaced. Mark did an excellent and effiecient job and went out of his way to address things with sump itself that the builder should have done differently. He installed a new, better pump and left the area cleaner than it was when he started. I would not hesitate to hire Aquaguard again.

Great! The technician (Steve I believe) was very friendly and knowledgeable. He explained the whole process to me and how to check the sump pump. He also took a look at the rest of my system to make sure it was functioning properly. He gave me a couple of tips that I could do myself to make it more efficient. Honest, reliable, and I would use this company again if I ever had future problems.

I purchased the Aquaguard Big Deal to check our existing (house original - 1985ish) sump pump. Scheduling was easy and the technician was professional and prompt. Our existing sump pump area had been damaged significantly over time and needed to be replaced. The technician brought an appropriate replacement along to the check up appointment just in case and did the replacement at that time. I checked prices online and their price was comparable. I would recommend their services.

They were very nice on the phone and very eager to speak with me. He estimated to install the back up battery for my sump pump would be between $1700 and $1800 when I had received other quotes around $400. I was also told by respectable plumbers that I should not go with a back up battery that I should get a generator.

We are sorry to hear that the client was not happy with our service. That cost included a sump pump as well as a battery back-up system. We only use the highest quality battery back-ups, not the cheap ineffective units they sell at home depot. When the power goes out the homeowner needs a system they can rely on. We are glad to hear that our customer service representative was responsive to the clients needs. Always be careful with battery back-up systems, many are very cheap and do not handle a power outage after a heavy rain - when you need the system the most. John Buchanan General Manager

I don't know much about sump pumps...but they showed up in a timely fashion, tested the pump, then cleaned it. Unfortunately, the pump failed about a month later - it was about five years old - and had to be replaced. However, I have to give these guys credit; when Springfield was hit with major flooding and I got water in my basement, they came over to check on the new pump to make sure it was functioning properly. I'm pleased with the customer service and the price of the sump pump maintenance. However, the sump pump replacement and installation was overpriced in my opinion.

I did not hire Aqua Guard because I was turned off by their representative's scare tactics.
Description of Work: My basement had flooding issues so I had Aqua Guard come out to give me an estimate on the cost to fix the problem. The Aqua Guard representative threw out a shockingly high estimate. Aqua Guard started out with 20K, went down to 13K, then down to 9k, and when I didn't call them back, a representative called me and dropped the price down to 5K. The Aqua Guard representative who came to my house told me a story about how I had to act now because he miraculously learned that one of his work crews was available since some other job fell through. It was amazing that another company (Mid-Atlantic) used the exact same line in an attempt to pressure me into signing the contract that day. Anyway, I did not sign with Aqua Guard and I'm glad that I didn't. The representative seemed manipulative and dishonest. I was left with the belief that it was all a scam and that I would be stupid to trust anything they said or did to my home.
WOW! What a difference it makes when you hire a REAL PROFESSIONAL. Five years ago when we hired another so-called "waterproofing company" to install an inside French Drain in our basement we thought we were saving money by their low price. Sadly, we soon discovered why their price had been so low. They actually had no actual waterproofing crews themselves but had sub-contracted the job people that I regret we let into our house. That sub-contracting crew had jack-hammered up our basement floor and actually damaged part of our foundation walls in the process. Although after the job was completed we didn't have any seepage again for almost 5 years - the damp musty smell never went away. When the basement started actually leaking again after heavy rains we called the original company who had given us a "Lifetime Warrenty" against seepage, only to discover that they had changed their name and would no longer guarantee the job they had contracted.to do on our home under their former name. What a rip-off! This time we were more careful. Instead of going with the cheapest price we chose the largest and oldest company in the area - Aquaguard Waterproofing of Beltsville, Maryland. The difference was apparent right from the beginning. When we called Aquaguard for a free estimate the call was taken by an actual human being - not an answering machine. They were very polite and professional and booked an appointment the very next day. The inspector arrived on time, spent about 15 minutes asking us questions about our home and previous experience with the other company. He then did a thorough inspection of our entire basement and even took us outside with him as he inspected the complete perimeter of our home. We all then sat around our dining room table while he explained and illustrated what had caused our basement problems in the first place and why the French Drain installed by the previous company had failed, as well as why it never had resolved the damp musty smell that had been emanating from stagnant water that had been festering inside the hollow cinder-blocks of our foundation for all these years. He also showed us reports from various health professionals confirming my suspicions that damp musty basements present certain health challenges to the occupants of such a home. What surprised us most however was that his inspection had revealed a series of stair-step cracks that were now expanding to horizontal cracks in the mortar joints between our cinder-block walls that - left unchecked - could have caused us serious structural issues in the future as the wall may bow inward with continued erosion. Our home was thankfully not yet at that stage. He explained that at some point the only solution to a water problem that has progressed to the point of having caused serious structural issues is an outside waterproofing system that involves excavation, back hoes , reparging and the like. He showed us that Aquaguard frequently does such work. However, at our stage the problem could still be effectively addressed using a water management system done largely from the inside of the basement that - although being a "compromise" with an excavation of the whole house, would still effectively resolve our issues at a much lower cost and less disruption of the property. He felt confident enough in this compromise solution to include with his proposal a lifetime guarantee against seepage that would also be transferable to the next owner - something that would be useful when it comes time for us to sell our home. His knowledge of our problem and the various options available to us far exceeded any other "inspector" who had ever come into our home to address the problem. Of course, remember we had been offered a "lifetime warranty" before by the previous company only to be disappointed. However, after learning from the website of the Maryland Department of Taxation and Assessments that unlike the previous company - Aquaguard has been in business under the same name for over 22 years we decided to this time go with the true professionals. That has turned out to be a very wise choice. The company worked with our schedule to arrange the job at a time that worked well for us. A soon as the crew arrived on the appointed day we knew we had made the RIGHT DECISION. The Aquaguard crew was older, much more experienced than the kids who the previous company had sub-contracted the French Drain job to five years ago. They worked with the efficiency of a well oiled machine. They began by moving our furniture to the center of the basement and covering it with tarps. One of the crew memebers even helped us unmount a television from the wall and carry it upstairs to prevent it from being damaged by the airborne concrete dust that would be created once they began the job in earnest. They pulled back the carpet and covered it with tarps. They even put up a curtain to keep the dust from coming upstairs. They didn't use the big air powered jack hammers the earlier crew had used to assault our foundation, but rather smaller, more precise electric tools that did't cause the kind of disruption and shaking of the house we had come to expect. They operated their tools and machinery with the familiarity and skill one attributes to that of a skilled surgeon performing his tasks with precise surgical instruments in an operating room. They removed the old out dated French Drain that had now become clogged with mud over the years and was no longer working. They repaired the structural undermining of our homes footer that had been caused by the French Drain encouraging water to wash out the ground from under the homes foundation. Once the old French Drain had been removed and the undermined footer reinforced with steel reinforced concrete, they installed a much shallower system next to the footer surrounded by lots of fresh gravel. Then they drilled what they called "weep holes" into the core of every cavity of every bottom cinder-block all the way around the perimeter of our basement. We were shocked to see the amount of smelly, stagnant water that came out. No wonder we have had suffering from asthma and respiratory problems with that nasty stuff sitting in our walls. They then fitted a special channeling system that they said had been designed by the Army Corps of Engineers to channel any future water that entered the wall to the sub-floor system and eventually the pumps so that no water could never again fester in the walls. The sub-floor system was sloped to two brand new sump pumps neatly installed into sealed containers below the floor with no open-pit or visible protruding pipe like old-fashioned pumps. They then replaced the concrete slab with some of the neatest and most beautiful cement work I have ever seen. In the finished part of our basement the water that had been stagnating inside our cinder-block walls had caused a discoloration on our drywall near the floor. However, when the Aquaguard foreman showed us that the other side of the drywall was much worse we were surprised at how much that fungus, mold or mildew had spread behind the drywall into the 2x4 lumber studs and our insulation. At our request he had his crew neatly cut the offending drywall, studs and insulation and haul them away with the other debris. They completed the job in record time and left our home neat and cleaner than we had expected after having so much serious construction work done. We were very happy with the job they had done and pleased we this time had hired the real experts. Then the day after our next heavy rain we got a call from Jane, the Aquaguard service manager, checking to make sure that the system was operating as designed under it's first real test. She asked us to walk around the entire basement with a flashlight to see if there were any damp spots so that if needed she could send a crew back out to make sure the job as 100% effective. We couldn't be more pleased with Aquaguard. It has been two months since they completed the job and our old smelly basement is a thing of the past. Even our respiratory symptoms seem to have subsided. I feel better just knowing that that old smelly stagnant water can't breed anywhere in the walls of my house any more. The house smells fresher all around and even seems cleaner than it was before we properly addressed the problem in the basement. In retrospect, the thousands of dollars we wasted five years ago with that other company in attempt to "save money" might have seemed "penny wise" at the time but it certainly turned out to be "pound foolish". We highly recommend going with the TRUE PROFESSIONALS the first time around. Once again we were given a LIFETIME WARRANTY - but this time it's from a 22 year old local company that we feel confident that be around to back it up!
Description of Work: AquaGuard removed an old inside French Drain that had been installed by another company about 5 years ago that had failed, In it's place they installed a modern sub-floor system that also provided drainage for all of the exterior subsoil walls of the house. OUR LONG STANDING PROBLEM WITH A DAMP SMELLY BASEMENT HAS FINALLY BEEN SOLVED!

THe sales man measured up the whole basement and gave us an outlandish estimate telling us we have to dig a trench on the perimeter of the entire basement including the areas where water never came in. This pitch was accompanied by a hard sell and scare tactics. We asked for work only in the room that has the seepage. He continued to give us a hard sell telling us that he was not recommending limited work. He also asked us what we expected to pay the the work, and we replied that we had to rely on estimates to form an opinion as to the price of the job. He then asked us who else had proved estimates and we gave one name, which he immediately criticized. I asked him to leave, and he continued to fire back criticisms.
Description of Work: We asked Aqua for an estimate to install a sump pump. We were experiencing seepage during heavy rains into an unfinished room in the basement. This room is approximately one quarter of the area in the basement.

It is unfortunate that this homeowner was not happy with our estimate. We tried to answer all of the homeowner questions. They had their own opinion on what they wanted to do to fix their basement problem and it did not fit with our anaylsis. We are the oldest company in the area and inspect 100's of basement per month. We try very hard to satisfy all of the people all of the time, but sometimes we fall short when a homeowner is focused on what they believe. My stated problem was a leak about four feet below ground where a pipe providing water from my well comes through the basement wall. This area was repaired about 11 years ago at a cost of about $800.00. I wanted an estimate for the same job. what I got instead was a recommendation for a sump pump installation at a cost of around $4200 which included fixing the leak around the water pipe. When I stated that all I wanted was my leaking pipe fixed the saleman proceeded to tell me that that was "not enough scope" to make it worth while for the company to send out their team. It was never demonstrated that the standing water resulting from periods of heavy rain came from anywhere other than the wall where the water pipe entered the home. Why would I want to pay $4200 when I know the job is worth less than $1000? I believe this company uses bad sales tactics to increase the amount of work and cost to the homeowner. Other reviews I have read confirm this practice.

The homeowner had a solution and a price to pay for that service in their mind before we arrived. We don't participate in patch work to fix a problem. We want our work to last a long time and not require the homeowner to revisit the problem a few years later like they did with this one. Different opinions are sometimes the stumbling block to solving problems and we believe that was the case with this inspection. Not sure why the Angie's list system allows a homeowner to complain twice, we believe it should be all in one comment list. We always take these comments to heart and will use it to become better.
