I purchased a foundation inspection, which "came with" a "credit" against substantive service provided. The folks arrived on time and before ever looking at my basement, gave me a whole "parade of horribles" about what goes wrong and what they need to do to "save me." They then looked at the foundation and in effect told me that either the house would fall down or we all would get desperately sick from mold exposure if we didn't buy their services, all of which were varying degrees of expensive. They also tried to pressure me to buy, both by telling me the mold danger was an emergency (which I did not buy, given what I know about my basement and mold in general) and by telling me the super-duper prices they were offering were only good for a couple of days. I told them I needed time to think about it and figure out finances and, after dodging another onslaught of pressure tactics I sent them on their way. Within 24 hours, I got a call saying they had "exciting news" about pricing, but I had to contact them at once. I did not. I got perhaps another dozen calls over the next several weeks. I did not answer any of them and they left no messages. Not a pleasant experience. Some things may just be worse than mold.

I had a very mixed experience with Aquaguard. My house is 35 years old and all of a sudden we had water in the basement every time it rained, so I wanted to take care of this ASAP. I called Aquaguard because they were highly rated on Angie's list. Representative was very knowledgeble, punctual, and determined what he felt needed to be done, had a lot of documentation to prove their company stood by their work, and essentially guaranteed I wouldn't be able to get the work done for a lower cost. What they suggested was tearing up my walls, digging into my basement floor, putting holes to let the water drain out, putting in a sump pump so this would never happen again, and then fixing everything back to new except for the drywall. Estimated cost was about $4500, not including drywall repair. Here's the problem: despite having gutter covers, I have been having gutter problems and did not have time to look into this before they came to do the estimate. The sales person assured me that there was no way that poor gutters could be causing water in my basement. He basically said that this problem had been building up for years and years, and the only way to solve it was to drill holes into the cinder blocks and let the water drain out. I actually signed the contract and scheduled the work. In the interim, I got a contractor we use to get a second opinion. He cleaned my gutters and stated they were horribly clogged (and stated that gutter covers never really work). He did rip off the dry wall and saw there was mold, but put a special water proof paint on the wall. Problem solved! The bottom line is that I think Aquaguard is a good company and they probably do good work. When I cancelled my work, they refunded the entire deposit. They were very professional. However, they were recommending extensive work that didn't really need to be done. Had they recommended to clean the gutters before committing to work, I would have been completely satisfied. However, they seemed more interested in the sale than doing the right thing.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Aquaguard Waterproofing of $4,500 for basement waterproofing.

The service was fine. They came in to do the job when I was not at home. They came and looked at the sump pump and they said the system was fine. They let me know the system does have a few more years on it. I appreciated that they were honest and they did not try to sell me a new system.
Description of Work: This was a Big Deal to do a tune-up on a sump pump. They did not have to do anything with the system as it was good.

We had a problem with a leaky basement over many years, we had a sump pump installed few years ago by a different company hat was enough to keep water off from seeping through but you can tell there was a leak because there was a smell of mold, discoloration and dampness. This year we got a contractor to finish the basement and the regulations required installing a regress window. This caused the leak problem to become even worse, rain water was coming from underneath the walls when it rained heavily. My husband found about Aquaguard from Howard county best businesses report and the experience and the service was outstanding. My husband was skeptic at first but we decided to go with it based on the great reputation. they were prompt, professional, efficient and finished the work in one day. We wanted to wait and write the review after several heavy rain showers to put the work to the test. Not a drop! the mold smell is GONE forever! the walls are clean and you can't even hear the powerful pump they installed working in the background, you have to really go next to it and concentrate hard and you can realize it is actually working during the heavy rain. All we can say is that they did a wonderful job and we are very impressed with the work quality. They are so confident in their work they give a " Certified Dry" certification that is actually transferable if you sell the house.

Thank you for your comments. After each Angie's list review, we hold an interview with the inspector. As with all reviews, there are 3 sides to every story. The part that was omitted in this review was the result of the inspection. Our inspector crawled around the crawlspace and determined it was a plumbing problem. This is out of our work scope and was forthcoming with this information. We won't offer something that is not needed. Concerning the dog, it was very untrained and not in control. Our inspector adamantly denies hitting the dog and we will take him at his word since he has been employed with us for over 4 years and has always received positive reviews. Regardless, we thank the member for their comments and will work on our customer service skills John Bryant General Manager

The rain barrel was to catch my sump pump drainage that was saturating my yard but it filled up within the first 2 hours of install and flooded the entire side of the yard therefore adding to the problem. Being advised on getting the rain barrel was a very bad idea. I had to uninstall the rain barrel and have another company run the pump discharge line away from the house towards the sewer drain system. Recently the back up pump is telling me to check the main pump. They came out in a timely manner but found nothing wrong. They will need to come back. To be continued.

It is unfortunate that the member was not happy with the cost of the pump. You can always find a cheaper price, but the quality of our pumps should also be considered. When I called Aquaguard to schedule an appointment to have my sump pump checked, the man immediately tried to sell me a new sump pump. This says to me that whatever he tells me after an inspection is suspect since he really wants to sell me a new sump pump and the inspection was just a ruse.

We apologize that the member was not happy with the service. We always recommend sump pumps that are 5+ years old be replaced. The worst thing that could happen is a heavy rain hits this region and an old pump fails and floods the basement. So if that is overkill we will accept that criticism. We do appreciate the member’s comments and will review with our office staff how we can communicate this better to Angie's list members. John Bryant General Manager

I understand that the provider did a very good job. We were not in our house at the time; we actually live out of the country part of the year. A friend, who lives near by, takes care of our house when we are away. He doesn't speak English very well so I called the company and asked them if they had anyone among their technicians who spoke Spanish. They said that they did have Spanish speakers and would arrange to have one of them go to the house to do the work. According to our friend, they did a very professional job and he was satisfied with the work.

The crew worked very hard from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and actually finished in one day. A lot of work. They cleaned up as they went and left no mess and hauled the heavy pieces of removed concrete through by basement window to avoid tracking it through the house. Over the past few years I had had persistent wetness problems in the basement after rains. I tried shoring up heavy dirt around the foundation, which helped a little but did not solve the problem. We have had several heavy and/or steady rains of 2-3 days since the installation, and I have had absolutely not problem with moisture down there. I'm very pleased with Aquaguard.

Not very well!! The rep arrived at the house at 8:00pm which meant that it was completly dark outside. As a result, there was no inspection done on the exterior of the house. There was supposed to be a 15 point inspection, but I never received a report or checklist. This was basically a drainage system estimate that cost 49.00.

The day I tried to schedule the Aquaguard Waterproofing Company to come and inspection my sump pump is when I became pressured. They asked about the age of the house and the age of the sump pump. I told him 10 years and automatically he proceeded on to sell me a new sump pump without an inspection. So $550 for a ¼ hp sump pump was offered to me without seeing if I need it. We scheduled a date, later that date had to change and after the second date was change, I can?t remember when they finally came out to the house. I had to go to work but my wife was home. Of course they told her I need a new sump pump. With the size of the basement, I need another sump pump, which means I would have to crack the floor in my basement for installation. No one knows if they inspected the sump pump, checked for cracks or corrosion, cleaned in the sump pump area removing grind and dirty from the bottom, or diagnose the sump pump as failing. I do have a crack where water comes in from the wall, that should have been the focus. To this day, during the raining season, I have the same sump pump with no problems. 40 homes in the area and most with finished basement and none of them has a secondary sump pump or flood issues. We in this neighborhood have the same pump from the same builder. It may not be top of the line sump pump but it works. I?m not impressed with the way this company initially dialogue with customers.

The service was very satisfactory. As a matter of fact, I suggested that we get them to be in a file so that they would be in our market for a new unit next year. I was very satisfied with them. The service man was very friendly and very honest. He indicated that everything seemed to be in working order which in many times is not indicated. It is not unusual for somebody to tell you that you need something you do not need. I used the big deal around the time that I purchased it and I did not spend any more than the price of the coupon. Their pricing was very fair and they did very well. I indicated to them to come next year and that I would definitely want to see them back. They also indicated that we have just about reached the lifespan of the sump pump so we would be talking about a replacement next year.

They were a "no show" after I had called and made appt with Steve Washington and paid by AMEX. I confirmed the day before for the 8AM-10AM apt window and was told all was well. We both took off work hours to better understand the sump pump. When we called at 10:15 we were told the service man was in Baltimore (45 minutes away) and had the appt time wrong. we were not happy, they could have called us. Washington called later that day and said he would refund our money but would like chance to do a free visit. We said yes to refund and we would consider another appt. We decided to go ahead with apt and the next time the guy came at 9:30 for the 8AM -10Am window even though we were told we would be the "first ones on the list for the day so close to 8AM". He cleaned out sump pump but said he did not know anything about the back up battery and thought it might be broken. He said he was not sure what to do. He gave me the invoice to sign and I noted this was to be free and he left. We have since called our plumber and he came by to check and said all is well the only problem was floater ball had been knocked off by the guy cleaning, which would have caused problems. We have not received our refund. Washington called to say sorry we don't fix broken items only sell new. We have always had good luck with Angie's List companies, but this was a disaster in communications, responsiveness and skill level. s,

Thank you for the comments. We investigate each review to see where we can improve. The appointment confusion was a problem on our end. This rarely happens, but in this case it was the Murphys Law principle- anything that can go wrong, it will. With the 1000's of homeowners we service each year, every once in a while we do screw-up even though we strive for perfection. We tried to make it up to the member by doing a tune-up for no charge, but we do not fix pumps or battery back-ups. Once a unit fails usually it should be replaced. We take each comment to heart and we admittingly dropped the ball on this one. Comments like this make us stronger. Thanks again John Bryant General Manager
