Before I tell you what happened here I'll tell you this project is 100% complete and looking great, just like all of our projects. If you talk to anyone who runs a home improvement business about Angie's List, sooner or later the conversation will turn to the extortion that some customers try to pull to get discounts. This customer demanded a discount and said she would write a bad review about our company if we didn't comply. She made the project incredibly difficult from the start. After she had made something harder than it needed to be she wanted a discount, every time. This project is 100% complete and looking great just like every project. It would have been done months sooner, literally months, if she had let us get it done. Instead she refused to schedule the installation while complaining that it was taking too long. She even reported us to the State of Maryland and they told her to schedule the completion appointment. Once she did it was completed professionally and it looks fantastic. I know people have a lot going on in their lives and we'll never know all of the details. This customer did tell me that her husband didn't want the new windows and was unhappy that she had ordered them. I imagine that could have contributed to her unwillingness to schedule the installation. Regardless, the windows were ordered, installed and a service call was completed and everything is all wrapped up. To anyone about to start a window or door project, the best advice I can give is to approach it like you're working together with the company to achieve a great result. If it's you against them you'll never find happiness.

Description of Work: We had all 19 Anderson windows replaced in our house. Window Universe provided the best price after we had a total of four contractor estimates. There were no "special" changes of the price quoted as was the case with some of the other estimates. The installers, Fraser and Rick, were on time, efficient and professional throughout the entire process. The crew chief, Jody, was on site during the entire installation process and answered any questions I had for him. In the end, the price and installation process was as presented to us by Jay. I will definitely recommend Window Universe to family, friends or anyone who is planning to replace the windows in their home. Thanks to all.

The situation was made a little more difficult to coordinate because the owner lives several hours away and the tenants weren't the easiest to work with. The windows were installed in a very sloppy manner. They were not plumb or level. They were not caulked well. They do not open and close properly. They left glass all over my yard when they were finished. My roommate was home when the work was done and did not know what to look for. The caulk on the outside of the windows was gooped in the corners. The vinyl was chipped and scratched. The "custo frames" are dented and are just thin flanges of aluminum. They have been back 3 times in addition to the first time and every time they come they mess something else up. They sent the same incompetient guy out to fix the windows who did the crappy install in the first place. When I told them specifically that I didnt want him doing the work again they said it was their policy to have the same installer fix his own mistakes. It has been a HORRIBLE experience and I would NEVER use this company! I thought I did everything right by researching them and using Angies List but I would have probably had as much luck if I threw a dart at a phone book. They have offered yo come back and fix them until I'm satisfied but every time they come something else looks bad and they dont work evenings of Sat afternoons and I am tired of taking off work. Makes me wonder if they even insulated inside the wall and around the window the way they were supposed to especially since the part I can see looks so bad. They installed them so shallow in the frames that I cant even find blinds that fit... Its HORRIBLE!!!

Well this one is a bit of a shocker. I’ll be glad to offer members the scoop on what went on with this project and hopefully I can offer a little insight into how we handle any customer concerns. When this project was installed originally the person who was at the house inspected the windows and signed the paperwork saying everything was complete and looked good. A little while later we received a call saying the customer had some concerns so we promptly scheduled a time for a manager to come out and review the project. We went through each window and identified manufacturing issues with a few of the window frames. New parts were promptly ordered and when they arrived they were installed. The manager went back out to the house during the service appointment and stayed until everything was completed to ensure the customer was happy. We stayed and talked about termites and all sorts of things for 20 minutes or so after the work was finished. The customer told us she was satisfied with how everything was looking and she thanked us for addressing her concerns. We made sure the customer had our manager’s cell number so she could call directly if there was anything else we could do to help. This is our standard procedure for any customer who has concerns about a project. Now, two months have gone by and we get this report out of the blue. I don’t think all of the members can see it, but in the private part of the report she is demanding a $600 payment to resolve the issue. We’ve left the customer a few voicemails to follow up on the project over the past 2 months including another one yesterday and we can’t seem to get a return call. All of our projects come with complete lifetime warranties and we’ll be more than happy to address any and all concerns our customers have for as long as they own the home. We just need folks to let us know if they have concerns so we know to help them out. We have even established a customer care line at 888-517-3678 for any customers who would like to bypass our office and speak directly to a manager who can do just about anything to resolve a concern. We take this stuff seriously around here. I’m sure we’ll be able to get this particular situation resolved just fine and perhaps we’ll need to put this one in the “you can’t please all the people all the time” category, but we’re never happy when a customer is unhappy. We do ask that anyone with a concern please call us up and get it addressed rather than blindsiding us online 2 months after the fact. Everyone at our company comes in to work every day with the goal of making customers happy. Our office is staffed 60 hours per week and we are always just a phone call away. I would ask anyone considering a remodeling project to read the 70+ reports our company has received and keep in mind that remodeling projects involving custom products installed in older homes can sometimes require service appointments. I was very pleased with the way the whole experience went. I pulled several quotes, but Jay explained everything, was very friendly and professional and knew his stuff. He told me straight up that I would have to replace all the blinds, and he was right - the windows are thicker and better quality than the ones that were there. There was a hangup in getting back to me to schedule measuring, and it was a scary couple of days for me - it had been a week and a half since I'd signed the contract and I hadn't heard from them, and I was beginning to think I'd gotten scammed. I contacted them and they were extremely responsive and helpful, explained the situation straight up and I was fine with that. The windows came in exactly when they said they would, and were beautiful and fit perfectly. My home was in good shape, with no rotten wood or other issues preventing installation, and Darren and Mark were good people, on time, professional, and friendly. They handled the presence of my cats with aplomb and had no issue with doing the top floors first, then having me move the cats to my bedroom to complete installation of the lower floors. They did forget the footstep I'd ordered with the door, but they came back on a Friday afternoon to install that, no issues or questions, and they actually brought it up first. The windows are very nice and I can feel the difference in my home air conditioning. I'd use these guys again in a heartbeat, but with any luck I won't have to.

Window Universe was one of three companies we contacted for estimates on window replacements for our single family home. Mr. Drenner came to our house to provide the estimate. He was very professional and personable. He did not pressure us at all and provided a very thorough and expert opinion/ information about the windows. He told us they do not take hours to give an estimate like other companies do (and we did have such an experience a few years back with another big window company) and it was true, he was very quick, but gave us all the information we needed. He answered all our questions and also followed-up immediately via email with any request we had. The only reason we didn't choose Window Universe was that we found a more local company that also impressed us, and we dealt with the business' owner. However, we would have definitely hired Window Universe based on our experience with Mr. Drenner, therefore I do recommend the company. I am glad we gave it a try, and appreciate all the reviews on Angie's List!

I was in the market for a replacement front entry door, and figured I might as well replace the windows in the house as well, so I called several of the local window/door installers in the area to get some estimates. The Window Universe rep was the 3rd company to come out to give an estimate. He showed up promptly at the scheduled meeting time, and gave a thorough presentation. At no time did I feel any pressure from him to close the sale. He finished writing an estimate, and told me to think things over for a couple days. Their estimate was not the lowest, but I was impressed with their presentation, and felt confident I would be getting a quality product. When I decided that I wanted to proceed with Window Universe, I called back and the sent out a different rep to sign the paperwork. The rep (an older gentleman, believe his name was Jay or Jason) went over the old paperwork, and found that the sliding glass door in our house was a standard size (previous rep said we needed to order a custom-sized door), so I ended up saving a couple hundred bucks. At this time I also decided to order a storm door. We were heading out of town for a week, so we asked that they send someone over to do the measurements the next day, and they scheduled someone to come out. However, the person doing measurements failed to show up, and we had to wait a week until we came back from our trip to have the measurements done. This was the one negative in our experience. Installation day came about 6 weeks after we signed the contract, and the installation crew showed up on a Saturday a little after 8am. They were very courteous, and managed to finish the job before 4pm. One of the crew gave me an overview of the windows and doors after everything was finished before leaving. Overall, I was very satisfied with the whole process. The only inconvenience was the missed measurement appointment, but they apologized for the mixup, and promptly scheduled the install date once the windows and doors arrived at their warehouse. One last note: I did not receive any of the weekly update emails that other reviewers mentioned. I'm not sure if they stopped doing them, or they did not have my correct email address, but I was able to get updates as needed by calling the local office in Baltimore.

This is something we started several years ago and customers really seem to appreciate them. Every customer with a pending project gets an email once a week to let them know the status of the project. Everything we send out is tracked in our fancy system so it’s easy to follow up on. It looks like we sent this customer 3 weekly update emails during the course of his project. I’m not sure if we have a bad address or if we were getting caught in the spam filter, but we were sending them out. I would ask any customer to give us a ring if you ever feel like you’re not getting anything from us. Our office is open 70 hours per week and we’re never more than a phone call away. Anyway, we’re all thrilled that this customer was so happy with their experience and we LOVE seeing the “page of happiness” nominations add up. We contacted this company based on the positive reviews we read on Angie's List. Although it took a while we had a pleasant experience with the sales man. Then things started to go wrong. Our initial installment date got postponed by the company. When the crew finally arrived the wrong size doors had been ordered. It took an additional week to get a new person to come by to remeasure. I was promised that the doors would be ordered rush with a 2 week delivery date. Over a month later I had to call the company and learned that my doors might be available the following week. A new date of installation finally was scheduled. We had to supervise the installation of the doors ourselves. For example, we had to ask that some insulation be placed to fill a gap b/w the door and the trellis. We got sold an aluminum capping to protect the door frame from additional rotting. The contractor was unaware of this and returned the following evening to install it at night. When we looked at the finished product in the morning we realized that there were gaps in the aluminum capping, that there was exposed wood frame, that the calking was very unpleasing to look at (gobs here and there) and that the sides were uneven. A manager came the next day to look at the doors and stated that someone would return to try to fix the problems. They sent the same contractor who challenged my husband to find someone who could do a better job. At my husband's insistence (since we couldn't reach anyone at the office) the contractor conceded and redid a great portion of the capping. The end product at least was more visually appealing. Overall the installation took over 3 months to complete although we had been promised it would be much quicker. When all the problems started occurring we tried to get out of the contract to no avail. Maybe the company is better at installing windows but we decided not to chance it and will be certain to contract someone else for that job

Well that wasn’t a great experience and we certainly have apologized to this customer. We have handled everything so the doors are looking great now. The original installer that we had assigned to this project had been with us for quite some time with a great track record. Towards the end of this summer he was going through some rather serious personal issues and his work was affected. Over the course of about a week more than one of the projects he had been involved in experienced very unusual and unacceptable issues. Unfortunately this project was one of them. Our installation manager and that installer mutually decided that it would be best if he went back to his family in North Carolina until things were worked out. He is not currently involved in anymore projects. This report does bring up a good opportunity to talk about a topic that we frequently try to communicate. It is important to remember that these projects are construction and sometimes, for one reason or another, a customer might have an issue or a concern about a project. This is true with any service business. We are absolutely confident that one factor that separates our company from the rest is that there will never, absolutely never, be a day when we don’t get every last concern resolved. When issues come up with a project that project is given top priority, a service coordinator is immediately assigned, and the project is completed. Our process doesn’t end there. After completion, an internal review is conducted and the results are shared with our entire installation team at our weekly meetings. I can’t promise that we’ll never make another mistake or have another project experience an unexpected delay, but I absolutely can promise that no company in town takes customer concerns more seriously and takes concrete steps to ensure better quality every single day.

The person who came to do our estimate was professional and courteous. The guys who installed the 15 windows were the same. They actually ordered the wrong windows but followed up and came back within 2 weeks and replaced the new wrong ones with the new correct ones. I signed up for Angie's List to get a few things done to my home. However, windows were the first on the list. I obtained quotes from 8 different companies to replace 13 windows in my home. I liked the prompt response when I called for an estimate from Window Universe. In fact, Window Universe was not the lowest quote, but there sales presentation by Jay Drenner was thorough and professional. I told Jay that I went on Angie's List and noticed a coupon and he adjusted my final cost with the price of the $500 coupon. After going back to Angie’s List and reading the coupon over and over and over. I realized it was not a coupon for $500 but for $250. If you have to buy a coupon for $250 then it’s not a $500 coupon it’s a $250 coupon. However, at the end of the day I was going to buy the windows from Jay. It took about 4-5 weeks to manufacture the windows. True to their word Angela sent out weekly emails on the status of the windows. Since I travel a lot with my job I called Angela to let her know a block time for installation due to my schedule, but I stated if the windows come in early then give me whatever day is available. Angela sent me a confirmation for installation and on Wednesday no one from Window Universe showed up to my home to install any windows nor did anyone from Window Universe call to say they were not coming. After waiting 3 hours I call Window Universe and Angela stated that there was a mix-up with the date. The sad part of it all was that no one from management called. Angela was very apologetic, but it wasn’t her job to take the heat. They did however reschedule for a Saturday installation. The crew, who installed the windows showed up on time, was kind and professional, did a nice job and finished the job in a single day with no need to return the second day. They did a terrific job cleaning up - I found very little evidence of debris either inside the house or outside. The only snag with the installation came when they explained that the closet window was broken and they would notify the office to order another window pain. After four days of not hearing a response from Window Universe, I called the company and was told that the window was on order and they would call me when it arrives for installation. Approximately 3 weeks later I called Windows Universe back to check on the window that was order. The window had arrived and the first date and time they suggested was not good due to being in the middle of the workday. I was told that the person who would install the window would get with me to schedule a date and time. I waited another week and call Window Universe back and the only time they could give you is in the middle of the day at the most inconvenient time possible. Ravileen, gave me a time of 10-11 and when I got the confirmation it had a different time of 12-1. You get the feeling of once you make payment and you are off Window Universe radar then you are own your own for repairs or proper installation. What started out as being impressed with Jay and how Angela kept me in formed on a weekly bases is turning out to be not so impressive. I have been very disappointed with the follow up service from this company after they had been paid. I am still waiting to have my window install.

Oh no! Well I’m glad to report the project was finished up and everything is looking good now. I do want to let the members know that, as is our usual policy, we did not receive payment for this project until everything was 100% finished up. That is the way we always work so everyone can be sure the goal is always to finish projects well and to finish them as soon as possible. In this case there was a little difficulty coordinating with this customer’s busy schedule. Of course, that is completely fine, but it did delay the final completion. We used this report as a training tool in our regular service meetings to make sure we can do the best job possible when it comes to coordinating window services. As much as we hate to see reviews from customers that were less than 100% thrilled, they are an invaluable tool to help us continue to improve. We sincerely thank you for taking the time to write and we want you to be sure we will be here to help if you were to ever need us again. On the positive side: I liked the prompt response when I called for an estimate. The sales presentation by Jay Drenner was thorough and professional. The two men who installed the windows showed up on time and were kind and professional and did a nice job. The windows work fine and I am really enjoying the box bay window seat that was installed. and they did a fine job on it. (See picture of box bay window). On the negative side: I chose this company because of their good ratings and that the follow up on problems seemed good. The wrong size wood trim for around the box bay window was sent and they patched two mismatched pieces together. (See picture) I was assured that this trim would be replaced. It has now been three and 1/2 months. They were supposed to install the trim today and I was informed that it had to be reordered again because it had been lost. The screens are of an inferior quality. Shortly after installation I noticed that the bottom of the screens showed at the top of the windows when they were in the up position and that one of them was crooked. (See picture taken from my living room couch) I called Jay about this and he said no one had ever complained of this before and he would have someone look at it when they installed the trim. No one has ever been out to look at the screens. The screens in my upstairs window by a different supplier are much better made and do not show below the window when in an up position. I have been very disappointed with the follow up service from this company after they had been paid

Nothing makes us more unhappy around here than an unhappy customer. We reviewed this file today, spoke with the customer, ensured that the completion was scheduled at a convenient time for her and identified what went wrong. I’d like to take a second to share what we found with the other members. Our warehouse was recently relocated to increase capacity. The process of moving nearly 1000 windows along with sliding doors, French doors, front doors, siding and trim was quite an undertaking. There were only two projects that were adversely affected and this was one of them. The custom prefinished interior trim that had been reordered to complete this project was lost. Several folks remember seeing it, but after a substantial search of the entire warehouse, it was nowhere to be found. It was our fault plain and simple. Regarding the screens we did offer her a free upgrade to the full screens which would eliminate this issue, but she declined our offer. We will have our service technician adjust the existing screens when he completes the trim. We hate to see anyone that is not absolutely thrilled after their installation, but we would hope members would see our 40+ highly rated reviews when considering a window company. As hard as we work around here to make sure everything is just right, sometimes things still do go wrong. When issues do arise we not only correct them, but we identify what went wrong so we can prevent future issues. Every single day we try to be a better, more efficient company than we were the day before and we will continue to pursue that goal. Thanks for taking the time to read through our reports!

They finished the work in December and then I had to order two more windows that I didn't think of so that wasn't their fault. They installed those two in February. It went very well. It took them two days. I would use them again.
Description of Work: I used Window Universe to replace all of the second floor windows with energy efficient windows.

They showed up on time. They completed the job in a day. They followed up with a couple of minor repairs in a timely manner. They blew the competition away on pricing. Overall a stellar job. Ask for Bianca for your estimate.

Excellent. I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Description of Work: We were provided a quote from Dan on 4/7/10. The quote included one kitchen 2-lite slider, and two sliding glass doors for our town-home. The quote was very competitive. Not the absolute cheapest, but close enough. We ultimately decided on Window Universe because of their warranty on the glass and labor. Our windows took a little longer than expected to get in (4 weeks instead of 3), but we scheduled our appointment for today (5/7). The crew showed up today at 9:10am, and concluded at 3:30pm. The installer showed me two areas where my siding had let in some water and rotted out a board. He fixed the issue, and advised me on how to prevent future issues. Everyone on staff at Window Universe was very pleasant and easy to deal with - from the initial quote, to subsequent conversations about when the windows will be in, to scheduling the appointment for installation, and the installation itself - all very painless. I will use Window Universe again if the need ever arises, and I have already told three of our friends about them.
