It is clear these people have only one interest - to gouge the customer for as much money as possible. The fact that they refuse to provide any idea on the phone as to a cost range (+/- $1000 I said) for a water heater replacement is ridiculous. Totally rude and unhelpful receptionist. Sometimes you get a very good sense of what a company is all about.

Great but, again, this was only an inspection.
Description of Work: Shipley came out under a Bid Deal special to inspect our plumbing system. They were very attentive and detail oriented. They tagged our water lines so they can be identified in the case of an emergency. They offered useful advice. I have not used them for any service since, but I expect I would call them.

I am a disabled veteran who is confined to a wheelchair. Shipley's Plumber tried to get me to spend as much money as possible when he came to my home. He worked on my wallet a l lot more than he worked on my plumbing. He came in and did a plumbing inspection. While he was here, I asked him to unclog my bathroom toilet. He looked at it and said that I needed to buy a new toilet, because my toilet just wasn't working anymore. He also said that I needed to have my toilet handle and the flap inside the tank replaced. I knew that he was lying because I had recently installed a new toilet handle and flap to stop the toilet from running constantly. He then quoted me an outrageous price to replace the toilet. I asked him to just snake the toilet to unclog it. He behaved as if snaking it wasn't going to work, but did it anyway. That did the trick and I have not had problems with the toilet since. He was ready to take an exhorbinant amount of money from me to replace a toilet that only needed to be snaked. The day after he left, my sink downstairs stopped up and my dishwasher started leaking a large amount of water. I called Shipley back and told them what was happening and questioned why the plumber had not noticed this issue when he came yesterday for the plumbing inspection. I received no response, but was told that they would send out a plumber again. The next day, the same plumber showed up and went downstairs. He claimed that my garbage disposal had ceased and that I needed another one in order to get the water drained out of the sink. He also said that the dishwasher was filled with water and he didn't know why and that I needed to get a wetvac to get the water out. I had to practically beg him to check the water lines to the dishwasher and the sink and explain to me why the water was backing up in the sink and the dishwasher. He gave me a really hard time and kept insisting that the problem was my garbage disposal and it had to be replaced at a cost of $500. I finally relented and asked him if he would just kindly get the water out of the dishwasher and disconnect for me. He agreed. When he was done, he gave me the bill and in addition to the $500 for the garbage disposal, he charged me another $200 for disconnecting the dishwasher!!!!! Do not use Shipley. The work they do is suspect and they are only after getting as much money as they can out of you and they are overpriced.
Description of Work: I've used Shipley Plumbing for years. The service providers were usually the same people. We came to know and trust them. One in particular knew his trade and stood out. but all attempted to provide service and were honest with us. the last person who came to my house was completely different. he acted as though he was doing me a favor, and he had a very high opinion of himself. Last week I called for service to correct a strange noise in the garbage disposal. The rep on the phone seemed to be working on a commission basis.....the window for "normal rates" was very small while everything else fell into a higher hourly fee. We finally agreed to an appointment this morning. He offered me a 10 am appointment and I took it. He didn't offer me a window, but he offered me a 10 am appointment. by 1045 no one had called nor had anyone come to the house. When I called Shipley to cancel my relationship agreement with them, I encountered several people who told me I was wrong. They do not offer specific times for appointments but they offer a window. Finally one gentleman told me point blank it wasn't true--they couldn't have told me 10 am. That was the final straw. These folks lost sight of what a customer is some time ago. They've become too big and along with it they've developed arrogance. I don't intend to use them in the future. And I've alerted all my neighbors who relied on me for my plumbing recommendation that I'm not using them anymore.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!!!!!!! Awful!!! I purchased a "Big Deal" promotion through Angie's List. When I called to redeem, The owner, Ron answered the phone. This is a small short staffed company. He was very harsh, rough and rude with me. He was very harsh stating "what deal??" "I have no deal with them" "I haven't done business with a big deal in over a year". He refused to honor my purchase of $65 for a heating inspection with a 25 point check, AS HIS COMPANY ADVERTISED ON THIS WEBSITE!!! Unbelievable!!! Then he hung up! After being on hold with Angie's List for 20 minutes, I finally got my refund. Now I have to wait 3 days for my money to appear back in my account. Was not worth the headache, the trouble, being upset, and now my money is tied up, money that can be used with a much more reputable and customer service oriented company. I SHOULD'VE HEADED THE BAD REVIEWS!!! Don't make the same mistake! Do: Do your research Don't: Use this company. EVER!!

The serviceman was prompt and very professional. However, I was charged $252 USD for a job that took less than 20 minutes to complete, and a part that can be purchased retail from $30-$60. ($252 did not include the $49 I prepaid for the inspection/flush). Having watched him, I'm confident that I can change this part the next time around. I was also quoted $98 USD to replace the rubber flapper in my toilet, which is not more than a $5 part and probably 15 minutes of work. Needless to say, I declined that offer. This is my first home and first experience with a plumber, so I have no baseline to gauge with; but regardless if this is "in-line" with industry prices, I find the rates outrageous and unreasonable for work that is neither complex nor laborious. I was very pleased with the work but I’m not sure that I would use them again, for this reason alone.
Description of Work: I purchased a $49 plumbing inspection and water heater flush which I considered a good deal. The inspection was very thorough and the represenative tagged all main valves w/inspection dates. He drained my water-heater which took about 20 minutes. During the draining it was suggested that I consider replacing the 9d-m3-1/2" backflow preventer which I was told should be changed every 5 years; so I did.

I had used Shipley Plumbing several times before the last time I used them, which was several years ago. In the early 2000s I once needed plumber right away, and someone I knew had given me their name because they had used them once. At that time Shipley assigned to me a plumber named Paul, who was very personable. He did the little bit of work that I had hired him to do well enough; however, being young and inexperienced in the ways of plumbers, I also went along with other projects he said I "needed" done. Since that time, I have realized that I didn't "need" most of what he did. In fact, about 10 years later, whenever I look at the messy tile job he did in my bathtub area and the faucet levers that don't work the way they are supposed to, and sometimes fall off, I sort of wish I had never met him. The problems are annoying but so far not worth paying to fix. Like I said, I was young and inexperienced, and I probably oozed that when he met me. Because of that, I wasn't as assertive as I definitely would be now. Fortunately, I couldn't afford the last project he said I "needed" done--it was going to be a replacement of all the pipes in my small home and cost more than $1,000 (I don't remember the exact amount--it could have been as much as $1,500). He said he was "definitely sure" that if I didn't replace the pipes my kitchen ceiling was going to fall in. About 10 years later, my pipes and my kitchen ceiling are just fine. Even though my experience with Paul was not ideal, when I needed a plumber quickly a few years ago to unclog my bathtub drain, I called Shipley. I didn't know any other plumbers, and I suspected other plumbers might be the same or worse anyway. And who knew--maybe it would be better so many years later. They sent someone else, and he looked at some sheet of what were supposed to be "standard" prices and quoted me a price of more than $300.00 just to fix a clogged bathtub drain. I think it was $320. When I balked at the price, he asked me if I remembered a plumber named Paul from their company. I guess they had me on their sucker list because of all the unnecessary expensive work I had allowed Paul to do years ago. I told him I would not agree to the price he quoted me, so he lowered it to something like $275, which was still too high but at this point I was paying for the plumber's travel time to give me an estimate and I needed that drain fixed. When I reluctantly agreed, the plumber explained that he needed to charge more because he was a master plumber--as if it should be my problem when Shipley sends a master plumber to unclog a bathtub drain. I silently noted to myself that I would never again hire Shipley to do anything. In fact, I would rather shower everyday up to my knees in water. Fortunately, now there are these great "snakes" you can get for about $10.00 that unclog perfectly.
Description of Work: Unclog bathtub drain. (Date of service is approximate.) This review also includes discussion of much earlier experiences with Shipley that probably totaled to more than $1000. See text below. I hesitated to submit a review because of the time lapse, but it occurred to me that communicating the kinds of experience I had with this company are one of the main reasons Angie's List exists. It is possible that Shipley has changed its practices since I Iast hired them, and I hope that is so.

As part of the Big Deal, Shipley's Plumbing did a very thorough check of the plumbing in the home, identified various leaks and gave estimates to existing problems. Their rates are very competitive, too, and they even offer paid membership programs so you can enjoy a % off their retail labor rates. The technician was very patient and didn't mind me asking all sorts of questions about the home.
Description of Work: I had purchased a Big Deal from them, and this is the best money I've spent in a long, long time. The professional who came to our house was prompt, courteous, and spent lots of time answering all my questions. He even made sure he didn't track in dirt by wearing shoe covers, which is a nice touch given my allergies! I am now waiting for Shipley's to come out with a Big Deal for HVAC/Air Duct cleaning!

They came promptly. They could not find the problem at first but then the senior guy came over and he found it. Within a day or two they found it and they patched it up. It has been working fine ever since. They were good. I did not think they were super cheap. They were competent. I think they were fairly service oriented. It seemed like they were a small company, family owned. I got the sense the way they talked to each other. I am pleased. In fact, I am signed on with them as a preventive maintenance contract. I would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Shipley Plumbing Heating & Air. I had an air conditioning leak, the air conditioning fluid leaked out and they took care of it. The last time they came out was probably in May. I spent about $600 for the work done.

Overall, the work on the drain was a joke but the supervisor did a good job screwing a soap dispenser into the opening in the kitchen sink.
Description of Work: I participate in an annual agreement whereby Shipley comes out once a year for a maintenance check. A Kohler sink drain plug wasn't working properly and the technician repaired it with a rubber band and a paper clip. Lasted about a week. Another employee said he was a company supervisor was with him told me it would really be great if I had a soap/lotion dispenser installed in my kitchen sink, to cut down the clutter. I'm thinking $50 max so I didn't ask the price. I thought that sounded good so I told him to go ahead and screw one in, it took about 90 seconds to complete the work. Turned out the mechanical soap pump cost just over $300.00 plus installation. Kohler sells the same part on-line for around $100.00 and my eight year old could have installed it. I'm looking for another plumber, that's why I joined Angie's List.

hold their feet to the fire!.....then you will be happy overall with this company!
Description of Work: Pressure release valve on old gas hot water heater blew....was spritzing water in basement....called Shipley...who came right out..rep was named Tony who was very knowledgeable and professional...after I had researched (online) the Bradford White brand in hot water heaters, decided to go with this replacement hot water heater which the rep Tony had recommended...75 gal heater is what I was replacing. On the original estimate it stated 10 yr. warranty from the manufacturer....in addition to Shipleys own warranty....I figured I couldn't go wrong... in essence... a double warranty. Hired Shipley to come and replace the unit. They showed up on time, were fast and efficient (this was in the very cold icy month of december)....I was happy until I looked at the model number on the unit and called Bradford White directly. Turns out....the 75 gal units or others for that matter....do not automatically come with a 10 year warranty from the manufacturer....it is an additional warranty that needs to be purchased by the contractor (another $199 charge in my instance on this particular model)....individuals cannot purchase this.. only the original contractractor.... so hung up the phone with the manufacturer and called immediately to Shipley and spoke w/the owner there...Ron.....who 'danced' around the issue and basically reiterrated THEIR companies warranty on the unit....which I stated... I was aware of HIS companies warranty on their work....but that the written estimate I had in my hand stated the model # of the hot water heater and right there on their estimate to me...was written 10 YEAR MANUFACTURER WARRANTY .... turns out...they did pay up the additional money to get me the proper warranty....but would not have been done had I had not researched this particular unit and called on my own to Bradford White. Then....second issue.....having moved here from another state....I was unaware that the unit then needed to be inspected by WSSC....(actually learned later about this).....so again...there I was on the phone with the owner Ron....who again 'danced' around but eventually did call WSSC to come out and do installation inspection and put their sticker on the unit.....but again... had I had not have learned about this and called WSSC to check regulations in montgomery county, md on this issue....Shipley would have let that 'slide'..................so for those reasons is why I rated the company as I did. It does appear they know what they are doing as far as installation and so forth, they have been in business for a long time, they are local (I really prefer hiring reputable local companies vs. other unknowns....as I very strongly believe in supporting our locally owned and operated companies in our community), they are not the most inexpensive...they are however, competitive on the high end side....I would caution however, when using this company...do your homework and check behind everything on your original estimate and what permits may or may not have to be pulled...and what follow up utility or other inspections need to be performed particularly in montgomery county....because they will not be doing this without you following up and being quite adamant. In my particular instance....which I stated to the owner upon my first call regarding the warranty.....I don't mind paying for what I get.... in this instance.... I paid for a heater with a 10 yr, warranty.....but that is not what I got.....(the company would have pocketed the addt'l $199 and not have applied for the additional warranty (taking it up to 10 yrs. from the manufacturer)....and ..... they would not had followed through with WSSC without me re-calling them and putting up a fight that they follow through on this.... so....if you are willing to do your own research and are knowledgeable w/permits/inspections necessary.....then feel comfortable using this company. In my instance... it turned out 'all ok' because of MY follow through.....certainly not the company....particularly when you have the OWNER of the company on the phone line with you and he is not immediately saying to the customer....whoops... our mistake...or oversight or whatever words he could have gracefully extended ..... will take care of this right away....which is all the customer wants to hear....but instead this owner 'dances' around the issue knowing all the while that his company was in the wrong (so it gives you the impression they are a little shady and will try and get away with what they can unless you ... the customer hounds them to take responsibility and be accountable to do things right....hold their feet to the fire!!.........then you will be happy overall with this company!

Shipley did it for free because I have an admiral account with them. We were using a different company and were not happy with them so we switched to Shipley 2 years ago and they are responsive, prompt, and thorough. Other companies charge $50-$250 just to come out. When you join Shipley's Admiral Club there's a $19.95 automatic monthly payment that you can use toward future work. The problems are that you can only use half of what is in the account at any one time, and if you drop out of the club, you forfeit what is left in your account. It's a lose-lose proposition. I'm taking the matter to the Maryland Home Improvement Commission and the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection.
Description of Work: Shipley does good work, but don't join their Admirals club. We have had them do a lot of work over the years, including installation of new hot water heater, unclogging toilets and sinks, new air conditioning unit and servicing of furnace. They show up on time and I can't comment on the value for the price, but the work was very good.

My heat went out over night on a Friday night. The DC area was in the the middle of a record breaking snowstorm. By the time we woke up, it was very cold in the house. I called several places and Shipley was the only place that would come out to look at it. 2 guys came out through the snow storm. They spent about maybe an hour, hour and a half or so fixing it. They could not have been nicer.
Description of Work: The furnace stopped running. They replaced an element.
