Service visit Went very well. Adam was very thorough. He completed inspection, cleaned the air filter and provided several tips on how to keep the system running well in the future (e.g clean filter monthly, showed how to clean it properly, etc).. We will definitely call coastal again in the future!

The ad was misleading. Coastal did not provide the service advertised. After losing a half-day of work, my oil furnace will have to be inspected and serviced by another provider on another date.
Description of Work: The company ran an ad in the most recent Angie's List publication, offering "Seasonal Inspection" of "Oil and Gas Furnaces" for $60. In addition, the ad noted "residential and commercial repair" of Oil and Gas Furnaces. When the service person arrived, he reported that Coastal can inspect only part of an oil furnace, but not the heating element and that they cannot provide service to oil furnace heating elements. The ad is clearly misleading. If Coastal had performed half the inspection for $60, another company would have had to repeat that to complete a full inspection including the heating element, resulting in a double charge. I declined the half service.

We got three estimates. We checked Angie's List on all three. The lowest price did not have a good rating and the highest price did not have as good a rating as Coastal who was the middle price. I called Coastal and they met the lowest price, matched the identical good quality equipment and included labor and warranty to match the lowest price quote. I already knew they had the best rating of A with Angie so that made the deal perfect.

I called to request a check-up because none had been done since we had bought the house 5 years ago. The tech (Eric?) arrived as scheduled, was very courteous and professional. After running his tests, he answered some questions that I had on how to improve the system performance. He gave "me" a clean bill of health and left. Coastal Heating & A/C also did the installation and maintenance for my commercial building system as well as for my previous house, all with the same level of satisfaction.

see above account The person who wrote the reply from Coastal misrepresented their position; I electively replaced the AC system in January, when they weren't as busy and would charge less, because I was concerned about how long the Rheem (old) system would last. the Rheem system was working fine when it was taken out. The suggestion to add return ducts additionally was not made until after Coastal had installed the Carrier system which did not function effectively. That was suggested as a fix of a system that they had installed which turned out to be way too large. Another Carrier franchised dealer (Robertson Plumbing and Heating) evaluated this system within the past month or two and stated in their evaluation that the system is too big for the house- that it was installed properly, but it is too large. Neither Carrier or Coastal will supply any remedy for the fact that the AC system in my home blows air at fifty degrees or less, which is uncomfortable, and that it will not cycle properly on its own thermostat. The evaluation of the need for cooling in my house was bungled by Coastal HVAC, the system is too big, and they screwed the job up. What this house needs is a smaller AC system, which it will get when I can afford it, but not from either Carrier or Coastal. I will get a Trane, from another dealer. Meanwhile, if you have AC problems in Annapolis, I strongly urge you to avoid Coastal. They have no idea what they are doing.
Description of Work: Three years ago, at my request, Coastal HAC installed a complete new Carrier AC system in my house, replacing a 35 year old system which worked well; the reason for the change, in January, was to get off-season rates and to forestall having to replace an old system during the summer. My house is 1400 sf. They installed a four-ton (48,000 but ) unit even though I protested that it was too big for the house. Since then, I have been plagued with very cold air coming out of the supply registers, poor thermostat sensing, and having to switch the system off and on manually all the time. Coastal (and Carrier) have been unresponsive to my complaints about the performance and size of the system. Another Carrier dealer came out (Robertsons) and checked the performance and installation and rendered a written opinion that the system installed was too large for the house and hsould be replaced with a 2.5 ton (30000btu) system. Coastal and Carrier have refused to do anything about the problems, to date. Meanwhile, the house is too hot, or drafty and cold, and often stuffy. I paid nearly five thousand dollars, as I recall, for a system that is inferior to the 37 year old one that was taken out. I wish I had it back. I will never use Coastal again, and never buy a Carrier product again.

Response from COASTAL HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Initially the member called us considering replacement of his old air conditioning system when he began having problems in the Summer of 2006. In January of 2007 I gave him an estimate to replace his old Rheem unit with another Rheem and offered him a quote for a Carrier system as well. I also suggested that a cooling load be performed on his home, because in my 42 years of estimating, it is not wise to assume that what someone installed was always right, especially a 35 year old unit, plus conditions change with windows and insulation improvements. The member's comment was the old unit worked great for all of these years why change the capacity. After explaining the above, he allowed me to do a survey. My measurements for the home came to 1820 sq. ft., not 1400 sq. ft. Also the windows and the wall insulation were original to the 1950’s era home. In the Design Information of the “Manual J” load calculation it shows a sensible and latent load requirement of 40,564 btu’s. I also recommended a high wall return air duct be installed along with relocating the thermostat. The existing duct design was common in the 1950’s for heating, but not conducive for a good cooling design. Again, when explaining this to the Customer, he commented, the old unit worked fine, why should he make all of these changes! You see, his old unit was a Rheem Model # AC57HB1, a 5 ton (57,000 btu) capacity system. So when I explained to him he would only need a 3 ½ ton (42,000 btu) capacity system what do you suppose he said, yep….the old 57,000 btu unit worked great why change it. We finally compromised and he agreed on a 4 ton (48,000 btu) system. Early Summer of 2007, I get a call from the member telling me that “the air is too cold”. We check the system and it is working like it was designed to work. Only thing I can think is after the member moved into his home the system was still very old and probably not very efficient and lost some of its rated capacity, but cold air is cold air, right? Sometimes it’s better to walk away from a sale!

Coastal provides annual check-ups of both our heating and cooling systems. The last check-up was for cooling in April 2011. Our annual contract with Coastal is prepaid in late winter; the 2011 cost was $120. The amount shown for the April work reflects half of the annual contract amount. The company mails reminder cards for scheduling check-ups. We have used Coastal since 1998. Their work is professional and we have never had a reason to be displeased. Their office staff is pleasant and helpful. Their service technicians know their job and perform it smoothly. Since they must access our crawl space from outside the house, they always either cover their shoes or remove them when they come into the house so as not to track in dirt/mud, a thoughtful consideration. Coastal replaced our heating system in March 2005. We made our choice of products based on their recommendations and have been more than satisfied that they advised us well.

They were very good. They worked for about four days. We just had a small leak of oil that kept coming out until it stopped. They had no problems with coming out. We were pretty happy. They were clean, friendly, and knowledgeable. The person that gave us the estimate was very nice. We didn't even call other people; we just went with them. They were honest.

A small animal had actually crawled into the liner of venting insulation under a crawl space. The remains of the animal were situated on the electrode of the heating system. It was pretty foul, but the serviceman took care of the issue and made further suggestions on how to clean the system up a bit if I wanted to do it myself or hire a duct cleaning service. He was extremely experinced, helpful, and really qucik. I am really glad I went through Angie's list and found Coastal.
Description of Work: The serviceman actually had to remove some obstruction in the system. He was very experienced, and immediately found the issue. He was quick to explain the problem and made two suggestions on how to fix. We picked the one he fovored and it worked out very well.

They came out and assessed our noise HVAC system. As suspected, the motor bearings were shot and the fan was imbalanced. They ordered the parts, came back in a couple of days and installed them. The system is now super quiet and has been running great. We had another HVAC company come out prior to Coastal Heating and they said that it couldn't get any quieter. We were having to turn up the TV when the air condiotioning came on. The technician was professional and friendly. We will definitely call them again if we have any other HVAC needs.

The air conditioning unit had a bad leak. A Coastal repairman diagnosed a leaking pan. He verified within 24 hours that the pan could not be replaced so we needed a new unit. The company sales rep came out in 3 days (this was the only slow part of the process) and presented us with options. He came back the following day with a firm proposal based on our prior conversation. We did some research which basically said there was little difference in equipment; the important thing is the installation company you choose because correct installation and reliable servicing are the most important factors. Because we were in mid June when all this happened, we had a 20 day wait for the furnace and air conditioner to be installed due to so many people having systems fail. Workmen arrived at 8AM on the scheduled day, worked quietly and efficiently for two days and had everything installed and in working order in two days instead of the anticipated three days. All old equipment was removed from the site. The workmen were careful around the flower garden and cleaned up after they finished work. They were very professional. Once installed, there were two problems - the ac coils needed to be leveled and an exhaust pipe from the gas water heater had to be reattached. This was taken care of within an Hour! I was very impressed with the quick response to these problems. In the time since, all is working well and we are cool and happy. To summarize, the work was done professionally and on time. The two small problems were corrected immediately. We are satisfied.
Description of Work: We replaced our furnace and air conditioner because the air conditioning unit failed and the furnace was old.

I called them the afternoon my furnace broke down and spoke with the assistant manager. She was able to schedule an appointment for the next day at 12p. The repairman was able to arrive earlier than expected and the office staff kept in touch with me to keep me posted on his arrival time. The repairman was professional and was able to figure out the problem and fix it pretty quickly. The only snag came when it was time to settle up. When I scheduled the service appointment, I was very sure to clarify that the service visit charge ($99.00) would be included in the cost of any work I had done. The cost of the repair was $185, but the repairman wanted to charge the $185 plus the $99 service visit charge. We wrangled back and forth about it for a while, during which time he was very even tempered and professional. I finally decided to contact the office and spoke with the assistant manager again. She was able to tell him that there was a change in policy (2 weeks prior) and that the S.C. was included in he work costs. The company was very amiable and professional and I will definitely be using them again.

Amazing service. The weekend service guy recommended not spending the extra to have him come out, because his phone diagnosis wasn't something he could fix without parts. So not worth spending the extra money. The tech on Monday came out and the system started working immediately, he checked everything and charged me the minimum. The system died again on a Friday night. Tech here on Monday AM, again system worked immediately, he dug deeper to find problem and worked out that I would be better off with an inexpensive service contract. Less than the cost of today's visit, and future possible visits. Great Service, very responsive, friendly. Their number and my tech's name is on our refrigerator.
