I scheduled a replacement for my (working but very old) water heater through Home Depot. Addarios was assigned, I can't remember if I called them or them me. A date was arranged, and I took the day off to be there.
1. They never showed up, and I got a call later that they "got lost" and would come out the next day.
2. I took the next day off and waited. They were late, but arrived and were nice.
3. They declared that there was a "special valve" attached to the water heater, which they had to charge an extra 50 or 70 dollars to remove before they could proceed. Ok, I knew nothing about plumbing at the time--I had just bought my house--so I said fine.
4. They then said the disposal fee for the water heater--which was included in the price agreed on previously--was $150 because, get this, it was a copper lined water heater. Keep in mind this was 2004 when the price of copper was sky high--copper power lines were being stolen because the price was so high. And these guys are charging extra to "get rid" of it. Knowing nothing, I agreed. You know when you've overpaid for something, and the shifty person starts to act giddy and rushing around to get the deal done as fast as possible? Yeah, that's what I felt after I gave them the money for that. I credit them for not high-fiving each other in front of me.
Afterwards, my neighbor, who was a contractor and had been friends with the previous owner said the water heater was worth quite a bit of money ( I confirmed this by reviewing my inspection report, where the inspector noted this on his sheet as well). The "gauge" they removed was apparently just a pressure regulator, a harmless device that could have stayed, but in any case its removal could not have taken more than 30 seconds, if that.
Addarios: just exactly like 95% of the shifty plumbers out there. You've been warned.
It was expensive but the work was good.
It took a total of 15 visits to get our system working properly. Their own carpenter came to repair some damage they'd done and told us their "plumbers are pigs." Condensation on the pipes was causing wet plaster to fall on our neighbors car (we share a garage) and they couldn't figure out why. The AC stopped altogether when the lines froze on a hot day. When we asked why the original guy was not coming out, they said he was on leave. When we said we needed their best people to solve what were obviously tough problems, they sent the same people who messed up in the first place (more than once actually).
To top it off, we got a smaller rebate than the sales guy had suggested we'd get and Addario's took months to send us all the necessary paperwork for it.
The only positive thing I can say is that they were always polite and responded quickly. They just weren't up to the task.
"[removed member name], I am happy that you found that our team that came out were friendly and knowledgeable. On the page that you posted that is for system upgrades and new installations. When we call to actually setup your visit we explain the dispatch fee, the cost and how it is applied should you move forward with any recommendations we suggest while on site. Even though we left and didn't perform anything at that time I will still apply the 59.95 towards any work we suggested to do. Look forward to still earning your business. Have a great day."
At the end of the day- about 1/2 a year after we started down this road- we have a better heating system and the work that the plumber did was quality. We have no complaints with the guys who actually came to the house to do the work. But getting to that point was a nightmare: a huge waste of time, totally stressful, super frustrating- and almost all of that was avoidable.
