We played phone tag, but never actually met or talked to one another. After setting up an appointment, they canceled a few hours before they were due to come over and left a message to reschedule. They never returned our phone call to reschedule.

Lenny and his group did a great job in putting up the sunroom. It's now our favorite room in the house. Lenny first came over to our house, looked at the porch and asked us several questions about what we wanted and didn't want. He was very good because he gave us things to think about that we hadn't even considered. After an hour or so, he gave us a time and dollar estimate on what he thought it would take to get the job done. When we gave him the go-ahead, his team tore down the old porch and started building. They did a great job. All along the way, Lenny regularly asked us if we were OK with the way things were going. Any questions or concerns we had (and there weren't many) were dealt with right away. It worked out so well that we asked him to build cabinets and a deck too. In the end, everything looked great. He cleaned up after himself and the final cost was just under what he had originally estimated.
Description of Work: We hired Lenny and his group to tear down our old back porch and build a new sunroom addition in its place.

Lennie was very fast and skilled at building our new deck. The deck is very attractive and we have been enjoying it every day. We also felt that the deck was very reasonably priced. The men were very polite and cleaned up everything completely at the end of the job. We are planning to hire Hourihane carpentry for future work.
Description of Work: Constructed new 12' x 16' composite deck with Red cedar railings. Pressure-treated joists, beams, posts, etc. 6 ea. 12'' x 48'' concrete piers. Deck attached to house at sill on 1 12' side and one adjacent 16' side.

I received five quotes on this work, Lenny offered the best price, highest quality materials and was able start/finish the job long before anyone else. Lenny performed all work w/permits, disposed of everything properly and was a consummate professional. I was worried that this work wouldn't be completed until the end of the summer w/initial contractor's quotes, but Lenny was able to start within 2-3 weeks of quoting the job and completed it in two weeks (even during all of the rain we had post Mother's Day 2006!). I fully intend to go w/Lenny in the future without any hesitation whatsoever.
Description of Work: Lenny has been nothing short of a complete joy to work with. First he tore off a dilapidated old two tiered deck which was imminently going to collapse. He then built a two-tier deck made of pressure treated wood w/composite (Veranda) decking. Lenny went out of his way meeting in a convenient place to go through his work (lots of photos of his completed work) & pick up checks, etc. Lenny set a price and schedule and (while keeping me in the loop met both without any problem at all (& this was a sizeable job!). Lenny completely understands what customer satisfaction means. Having used dozens of other contractors, Lenny is a breath of fresh air to deal with!

The two carpenters performed professional work. The price was very reasonable, though they asked for a small increase to remedy a problem caused by weather conditions. The quality of work was generally very good, and the work was performed promptly.

After a week of phone tag (in November), I reached Lenny regarding making a large corner-cabinet lazy susan for us. He said he's too busy to do that job right now. I appreciated his honesty & asked for a referral for someone who could. He didn't give me one. So back to the List!

It is my hope that everyone who has need of construction &/or carpentry work and who decides to engage Lenny Hourihane's services will encounter a fabulous and fun filled experience as I did. Each day, you will be apprised of what is hoped to be accomplished. In addition, you will be informed when your cooperation will be needed. Just follow the do's and don'ts and "voila" before you know it, you have a beautiful porch and fence, that is the "talk of the neighborhood! A+! Finally,I don't ever have to paint the porch and fence. The best compliment is that neighbors and friends have a plan to engage Lenny's services!
Description of Work: A 50 year old Rhododendron bush had to be professionally cut back while 3 huge evergreen bushes, 2 Forsythia bushes & rose bushes, etc, had to be removed. Next, the old porch was removed expect ceiling of porch & roof of upper porch. After a permit was obtained, re-building of the porch commenced: foundation, porch floor, 7 columns, railing/banister and porch steps, etc.

This was a big and complex job and our house is old and full of surprises and limitations. Lenny did a great job dealing with whatever arose, stayed within his estimate and finished on time. Lenny is great to work with, totally honest, and dedicated to doing a good job and satisfying his client. He was always easy to reach and responsive to my concerns. Lenny also made several suggestions which improved our plans. He is a stickler for time and is very punctual. I plan to hire him again this summer.
Description of Work: Completely finished our basement to make home offices, shower and laundry room: built interior walls, insulated, installed bathroom with shower, rebuilt stairs, new exterior and interior doors, windows, venting of shower and furnaces, full wiring job(subcontracted), all plumbing (subcontracted), plastered and painted (subcontracted). Also remodeled first floor kitchen and bathroom: all new plumbing and wiring, installed kitchen cabinets and countertops and all appliances and bathroom fixtures, replaced and had ceilings and several walls plastered.

I called him to set up an appointment to get an estimate. He didn't show so I called him and he told me a story about losing his planner and as a result he didn't know when his appointments were. He said he'd be there later that afternoon and he again didn't show and didn't call. I called him back and he merely said he got busy. I made another appointment for the following weekend because he was being apologetic. He again didn't show and didn't call and he said that the appointment "slipped my mind".

This was a terrific experience. Lenny was responsive and polite, and more importantly he knew what he was doing. I had been searching for months for someone to repair the pillar on my front porch. I had a good idea of what needed to happen because one of my best friends and my brother are both builders. I had spoken to at least four other people about this project and got every response from the whole porch needed to be rebuilt to nothing nothing needed to be done at all. Lenny was the only one I talked to who really knew what needed to happen. He was terrific. I can't say enough good things about him and the work that he did.

Did not return my phone call. They got great reviews & I wanted to hire them. I would try them again for another project. (The day my previous report was published, Lenny called me to explain that he had been very busy and that was why he didn't call me back. He was upset with the report and wanted to make things right. He said that he was still very busy but that he would refer his brother to me. Over the next couple of weeks, I got an estimate but decided to hold off on the project because I had fixed the door myself in the meantime. Estimate was $550 for labor.)

THIS WOMAN WAS COMPLETELY TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS BY ANOTHER CONTRACTOR WHO DID A TERRIBLE JOB IN HER HOUSE AND LEFT HER IN TEARS AFTER ROBBING HER BLIND. SHE IS NOW SUING THIS CONTRACTOR. I THEN CAME ALONG TO TRY AND HELP HER, BUT ALL SHE REALLY WANTED WAS A DETAILED ESTIMATE FOR HER LAWYERS, SO THAT SHE COULD GET SOME OF THE $80,000 THAT SHE ALREADY WASTED THE FIRST TIME ON BAD WORKMANSHIP. WHILE I REALLY FELT SORRY FOR HER I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT TO SUPPLY HER WITH A DETAILED BREAKDOWN IN THE COST OF THE PROJECT WOULD TAKE UP A LOT OF MY VALUABLE TIME $400. SHE AGREED TO PAY ME THIS MONEY ON THE UNDERSTANDING THAT WHEN IT CAME TIME TO DO THE JOB I WOULD DEDUCT IT FROM THE OVERALL PRICE, BUT SHE HAD NO INTENTION OF HIRING ME AT ALL. FREE ESTIMATES ARE EXACTLY WHAT THE ARE BUT WHEN IT COMES SPENDING ENDLESS HOURS BACK AND FORTH TO A PERSONS HOUSE LISTENING TO HER SAD STORY AND HER PROMISES I HAVE TO DRAW THE LINE. THE ONLY WINNER HERE IS HER LAWYER.

Summary: We hired this company for a small project but will hire him for our next big one. He always returns calls, meets deadlines, gives honest fair prices, provides good finished carpentry even in a less than square older New England house AND you get the Irish brogue and sense of humor for free. The details: In November 2005, we hired Lenny Hourihane and his carpenters to ''open up'' our living space by installing a french door between the kitchen and living room. We did this despite his warning that there was a risk that we'd hit pipes or electrical work. Of course we hit both and our french door project turned into a kitchen redo (kitchen floor had to be torn up to reroute pipes etc). Instead of walking away from this relatively small job, Lenny stayed involved. Contributing his time and advice over 4 months even though I chose to get IKEA cabinets and pull together the electricians, plumbers, floor guys, countertop installers myself. Happy w/french doors - and new kitchen :)
Description of Work: Installed french doors in retaining wall between kitchen and living room. Insulated, sheetrocked and plastered entire kitchen and affected areas in living room. Applied new trim throughout kitchen. Prepared sub floor for installation of wood floor. Reinstalled swinging doors in kitchen. Installed the Over the Range microwave. Replaced rotted wood on deck. Spent time on many finishing details (some left unfinished by other workers). Altered their schedule to work on a Saturday/Sunday so that I could meet my cabinet installation date. Made several consulting trips to job site which resulted in many good, and $-saving suggestions for the overall project.

LENNY AND HIS CREW WERE ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND PROFESSIONAL. IF THERE WAS SOMETHING I DID NOT UNDERSTAND HE, WOULD ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO EXPLAIN IT TO ME. LENNY DID A GREAT JOB FOR US AND I AM QUITE CERTAIN OUR DECK IS NOW SEALED AND WILL NOT LEAK AGAIN. HE IS EASY TO WORK WITH AND ABLE TO COME UP WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO SITUATIONS THAT MAY ARISE. AFTER HE FINISHED THE JOB, WE REALIZED THE DECK FLOOR WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURED AND LENNY CAME BACK AND SECURED IT FOR US, WANTING TO BE QUITE SURE THAT WE WERE SATISFIED. LENNY DOES SOLID WORK FOR A VERY GOOD PRICE.
Description of Work: LENNY AND HIS CREW BUILT A NEW FLOOR FOR OUR SECOND STORY DECK. THE ORIGINAL FLOOR WAS LEAKING ONTO THE NEIGHBOR'S DECK BELOW AND SO LENNY PLACED A RUBBER MAT BELOW THE NEW FLOOR TO SEAL THE DECK AND PREVENT FURTHER LEAKING. HE REMOVED AND RAISED THE HAND RAILS SO THEY WOULD STAY AT CODE HEIGHT.

I WAS VERY CAREFUL TO SELECT A CONTRACTOR FOR THIS WORK, SINCE I HAD SOME REAL BAD EXPERIENCE WITH MY LAST CONTRACTOR - A ROOFER. BUT LENNY AND ANGIE'S LIST HELPED ME TO RESTORE MY CONFIDENCE IN THIS PROFESSION. I INTERVIEWED A FEW CONTRACTORS FROM ANGIE'S LIST. ALTHOUGH ALL WERE QUITE GOOD, I CHOSE LENNY SINCE HE WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT LOOKED BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE PROBLEM. HE POINTED OUT THAT WATER DAMAGED MY FRONT DOOR PORCH AND COLUMNS, AND WE MUST FIX THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM - THE GUTTER THAT WAS IMPROPERLY INSTALLED BY THE ROOFER. WHEN HE STARTED TO WORK, I WAS IMPRESSED BY HIS QUICKNESS, PUNCTUALITY, COURTESY, AND PROFESSIONALISM, NOT TO MENTION GOOD QUALITY. HE ALSO ARRIVES ON TIME. ANY TIME HE EXPECTS TO BE LATE, HE WOULD CALL ME TO LET ME KNOW (ALTHOUGH I DO NOT REALLY CARE WHEN HE STARTS TO WORK ANYWAY). I AM PRETTY SURE WHOM I SHOULD CONTACT WHEN MY NEXT PROJECT IS UP. DID I MENTION HIS PRICE IS VERY REASONABLE? KEEP UP WITH THE GOOD WORK, LENNY.
Description of Work: REPLACED TWO FRONT DOOR PORCH COLUMNS WITH TWO 8'' X 8' NEW COLUMNS; REPLACED ENTIRE FRONT DOOR DECK (DISMANTLING OLD AND INSTALLING NEW); FIXED GUTTER SYSTEMS AROUND THE FRONT DOOR AREA (ADJUST WATER FLOW, INSTALL NEW DOWN SPOUTS, FIX FALLEN OR LEAKY SECTIONS); FIXED BACK YARD FENCE DOOR THAT FELL OFF AND FELL APART; FIXED A FEW MISSING ASPHALT SHINGLES ON ROOF TOP.

LENNY IS AN EASY PERSON TO WORK WITH, WHO HAS AN APPRECIATION FOR 100 YEAR OLD HOUSES. I FELT COMFORTABLE ASKING HIM QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SCOPE OF THE WORK. ALTHOUGH LENNY ORIGINALLY BOOKED HIS SCHEDULE TOO TIGHTLY, HE GAVE ME ENOUGH LEAD TIME TO ADJUST MY SCHEDULE. THE DAYS HE ACTUALLY WORKED AT MY HOUSE, HE WAS PUNCTUAL. HE AND HIS CREW WORKED METHODICALLY AND LEFT EACH AREA THEY WORKED IN CLEAN. IT WAS APPARENT AS LENNY AND HIS CREW WORKED THAT HIS PRIORITY IS THAT THE WORK WAS COMPLETED TO HIS SATISFACTION AND MINE.
Description of Work: HOURIHANE CARPENTRY REPAIRED MY GARAGE CEILING, REPLACED WINDOW SILLS, REPLACED WEATHERIZING MATERIALS AROUND SEVERAL DOORS AND REPLACED THE TRIM ON A WINDOW ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOUSE.
