Lenny, as always, is very professional and does high quality work. This project took about a year to get done due to permit issues, but Lenny was able to fit me into his schedule. The work was done very quickly and the whole porch looks great. The neighbors loved the work so much a couple of them have contacted Lenny about doing their homes, too.
Description of Work: Added new open porch with stairs and railings.

Lenny presented himself well, he answered my phone call in a timely fashion and did the job in a day and a half. He cleaned the basement to a condition far better than he found it. He asked for a small deposit up front, another reasonable amount for supplies (I gathered) once he was underway and most of the money after the job was finished and I'd had a few days to evaluate it.
Description of Work: Lenny installed a support beam with posts in my basement to correct a sagging upper floor. The wood beam is secured by two steel posts he anchored into the cement floor. This resolution was recommended by a licensed construction engineer.

This has been a problem area for the house -- the porch is open and exposed to sun, rain, snow, etc. The decking has had to be replaced or patched every 5 years or so, so he recommended using a composite material instead. He returned calls very promptly and came within a week to do this work. My parents were very pleased with his work and he also cleaned out the gutters and downspouts (he offered to do this, which was very nice). He and the other worker cleaned up after themselves too -- always a bonus.

Of the several contractors that I spoke with regarding the work, Lennie was remarkable for his responsiveness and quality of character. He called back quickly and came out to look at the work within a few days, at exactly when he said he would arrive. We were in a time crunch and needed the construction done quickly, and Lennie was able to not only accommodate our schedule, but actually was able to start a few weeks earlier than he originally promised. Once the work started I found the crew (Billy, Fin and Mike) to be exceptionally polite and knowledgeable. The work went pretty much as we planned and despite many rain delays and changes in scope of work (by me), Lennie remained polite and responsive. Lennie took on the additional work that I requested as job progressed, despite the fact that he had fairly tight time and manpower constraints, and he was fair and reasonable in additional costs. The final product looks very good, and overall we were very happy to have chosen Lennie.

In our opinion, Lenny is exceptionally talented, honest, intelligent and funny. I was the dreaded attention-to-detail freak who wanted everything just so, but Lenny was always accommodating and sensible. He did not nickel & dime us (which I hate), he updated us every step of the way, he answered all our questions, and when problems arose (they always do), we just discussed them matter-of-factly and Lenny proved himself to be a creative and generous problem solver (the solutions almost always meant more work for Lenny). It always takes 3x longer than you think, but in our case, quality was more important than speed, and we are delighted with the final construction.
Description of Work: Lenny & Billy (plus additional craftsmen) built a covered porch for our 1850 colonial house that looks like it was always there, but they built it from scratch, according to my drawings. Two sets of steps, 4 posts, electrical lighting, balusters & handrails, rubber roof, bead-board ceiling, ProCell decking material, new screen door, lots of detailed molding, gutters etc. They also handled all permits. In addition, they removed the wrought iron railings and rounded columns on an existing porch, and replaced them with square posts and wood railings so that the two porches now match.

Overall, the project was a complete success. I read a recent review of Lenny posted here which was less than stellar because of the painter he used. I know that Lenny has had some bad luck with painters and it has been frustrating to him more than anyone and I know he is actively working on hiring a new painter. I had a minor issue with the painter but Lenny fixed things immediately. I imagine in jobs like this, problems will arise and it's how your contractor rolls with the punches that matters. Lenny was always on time, polite, flexible, kept me informed of when anyone would be working at the house and called me almost every night to make sure I was happy with the work performed. His carpentry work is beautiful and he never cut corners. There was an issue with the radiator fitting against the newly installed baseboards and, while we would've settled for a simpler fix, he made sure that the workaround was as beautiful as the original plan. Oh, and he's so much fun!
Description of Work: Complete renovation of bathroom. Work performed included demolition, installation of drywall, plastering, plumbing (faucets) and electrical work (fan, outlet), installation of new window, tiling of tub and floor, painting, wood baseboards and molding, rejuvenation of radiator, and installation of all fixtures.

All work was done as agreed and the results were very good. The work took longer than expected. Special molding needed to be made to match existing molding. The need for this might have been anticipated sooner and a lot of time was lost. That said, all carpentry work performed by Lenny and his team was done well and Lenny was very responsive and easy to work with. His subcontractor painter was harder to work with and didn't always show as scheduled. I might have been better off hiring the carpenter and painter separately and coordinating this project myself.

Lenny and his team were great to work with. Lenny is easy to talk to, patient and flexible. There were several times during the project when I made changes after something had been completed. The changes were the result of me not liking something I had picked out once it was installed, such as a faucet or a light fixture. Lenny replaced these items with my new selections without any fuss. Lenny also provided suggestions during the project, one which resulted in the creation of a beautiful built-in storage unit for the bathroom and another in the camouflaging of an ugly wall radiator. The built-in storage unit consists of two pull-out drawers and two doors and looks like a custom built piece of furniture. Throughout the project Lenny kept me well informed of the status of things. Any issues or questions that I had during the project were addressed immediately. If I need any work done on my house in the future I ll be sure to hire Lenny to get it done.
Description of Work: In addition to a complete gutting and remodeling of our main bathroom, Lenny also updated two other bathrooms in our house. He installed new French doors in our living room, installed a ceiling fan, replaced molding that was missing from our den and plastered and painted the walls and ceilings in two stairways. The work in the main bathroom included the installation of insulation, blueboard/rock board, plastering, lighting and ventilation, electrical outlets, plumbing, tiling, installation of the sink, counter top and under the sink cabinet, a 350 lb. cast iron tub, toilet and faucets. Lenny also installed a built-in set of drawers into a wall where a tiny, barely usable, closet previously existed. The fronts of the drawers were built to look like the under sink cabinet in the room. The updates to the two smaller bathrooms included the installation of new toilets and sink fixtures in both bathrooms and the installation of a new light fixture and sink in one of the two.

It went great! They started work when they promised to and were there almost every weekday, and the occasional Saturday, until the job was completed; it took about a month and a half. Lenny had lots of good ideas about how to carve up the space and cleared all major decisions with us. There was one disagreement, about how large the furnace space had to be; we felt it was stealing too much of the usable space, but Lenny convinced us there was no alternative. Altogether a very good experience.
Description of Work: It started with a large, dark, unfinished basement, with a tile floor but crumbling stone/brick walls and no ceiling. There was a daunting mess of wires, pipes, and ducts to deal with that couldn't all be hidden without bringing the ceiling too low. Lenny and his crew put up walls and a ceiling with recessed lighting. They installed lots of cabinets and clever in-built shelving for storage. They walled off the stairs and two furnaces and gave the basement area its own entrance. They put in insulation and baseboard heating. There was some electrical work and phone and cable wires were run down to the basement. The whole lot was painted, including the utility sink and ducts that hung below ceiling level. They even went so far as to polish visible copper pipes.

Lenny returned our call promptly & scheduled an appointment for an estimate shortly thereafter. He showed interest in doing the work & we received a reasonable estimate. We scheduled a start date for two months later & were pleased when he came as expected. Lenny's crew is professional & easy to have in your home. Lenny called every morning before they arrived & also called in the morning if they were not able to make it that day. We were involved in every step of the process & appreciated his attention to detail. He knew that we had a deadline for the job & he did his best to stick to that date without compromising the quality of work. We were pleased with his design ideas such as an entertainment center, & the construction of arches that make the room feel like an extension of the house & not just a basement. We have a 2-year-old that really enjoyed the guys & they were sweet to him as well. We are very pleased with the finished product & are enjoying it daily.
Description of Work: Lenny & his crew remodeled our unfinished basement consisting of approximately 500 square feet. Included in his service were the following: obtain permits; frame & insulate interior & exterior walls of the TV/lounge room; plaster all walls & ceilings; install electrical, including lighting & base heating; all finished carpentry, including cabinets, construction of arches, closet, & finish trim; painting; & helping move furniture in & out of basement.

Lenny was eager to work with us from the start, he was on time to our first meeting and from the get go, he and his crew excellent. Due to a delay in the permitting process, we started with the outside shingles, and took down the chimney. Once we received the permit, the work started with earnest. We chose to live in the house during the construction, and Lenny was accommodating, although without us under foot, the construction would have gone quicker. Our project required Lenny to remove our roof and expose our house. Every night before they left the house was weather proofed and even in the hardest rain storm water did not come in. Once the house was framed out, his electrical contractor and plumber did their jobs. Each of them bringing their expertise to the project. The drywall and plaster went up in two days. And Lenny installed the new hardwood floors. The painters took a week to paint the interior and exterior of the whole project. Lenny sent in cleaners hat we still use today.
Description of Work: They added a second story to an existing ranch home. Demolished the chimney and existing walls, added a new kitchen and a mater bedroom suite, replaced existing flooring, tiled the kitchen and new bathroom, re-shingled the exterior, and then added new electrical, central air, and new lighting.

I called Lenny to get an estimate on the work. He called me back and scheduled an appointment for the upcoming Saturday. He never showed up, and never called to cancel/reschedule or explain. We left 2 phone messages for Mr. Hourihane over 2 weeks and never got a call back. This is unfortunate, as it is hard to find good carpenters, and we really were impressed by the majority of favorable reviews here. I understand that Mr. Hourihane is most likely in high demand and very busy, but the professional courtesy of a return call, even to decline the work, would have been appreciated.

Never called back despite his promises. Had me and my family waiting for him. I had better things to do on a SATURDAY than to wait for Lenny.
Description of Work: Nothing, because he promised he'd call back and he didn't. Lenny told me he would be at my house on Saturday 9/16/06, yet didn't know when. I told him I would call him on his main line and leave me phone # on his voice mail to coordinate, but Lenny said it was going to be Saturday. No call all day Saturday. I am as busy as the next guy, not mention being busy getting my family into the house. I was upset. I called him to let him know. I was respectful, but Lenny had a bunch of excuses. Lenny was the first to return my call, make an appointment to see my office area, and give me a quote. He was punctual, meticulously aware of detail, helpful (including with problems which were not within the scope of his quote or project specifications,) creative in his approach to our project, and trustworthy. Most of the work occurred while we were away and we would feel comfortable leaving our home in his hands again. When problems arose with one of his subcontractors cutting the wires to our security system, Lenny immediately took responsibility and scheduled repairs. If there is anything more laudatory that I could say about Lenny than that his sense of design is exquisite and his craftsmanship is superb, it is that he has integrity and a calm, good humor, even in the face of difficulties. We would hire Lenny again for any and all home renovation and remodeling projects.
Description of Work: Lenny beautifully renovated an old basement office, waiting room and bathroom in our home. Along with a total demolition of the existing rooms down to the studs, he installed new insulation, electrical service, heat, lighting, blue board, plaster ceilings and walls. He designed and installed an exquisite vaulted ceiling in the main room and a coffered ceiling in the anteroom complete with recessed lighting. He completely remodeled an old slate fireplace with coffered wood panels, wainscoting and a granite hearth. He designed and built cabinets, applied wainscoting to waiting room walls, and designed and re-tiled the bathroom. Seeing that a hardwood floor existed below several layers of paint, Lenny suggested we sand and refinish it rather than install wall to wall carpeting. He found the floor re-finisher and we now have an elegant hardwood floor in our basement. The rooms are far more beautiful than I could have imagined thanks to Lenny's exemplary design and craftsmanship.

He informed he would not be able to do the work until late October or early November, then informed me very politely that he would not even consider the job unless I was doing 4 or 5 rooms at a time.
