I waited until after the year and I was looking for someone else to do it. I figured I could get a better price if the person was not working for a large company. I actually did get another guy to come. He went down stairs and came up and said it would be $125. I said, ?don?t I need like 3 parts changed!? He said, ?oh no lady, all I have to do is clean them, I don?t have to replace them!? He said that one of those things he was going to replace was like a light bulb, you don?t know when it?s going to go out. So, instead of paying $625 I paid $125. It is a large company. I ?ve had them before. I am suspicious of whatever they tell me. I am suspicious anyway. When they come and they get women, they think they can tell her anything. For me it doesn?t work that way. I always get 3 different ideas from people. I was going out and I called them up and I said, ?you were supposed to be here between such and such!? He said, ?we are running behind, you know it?s cold out and everybody?s furnace is breaking!? That is not my problem, my appointment was at one time, so I had to rearrange the time, because they didn?t come when they were supposed to. He was doing his job, he was alright. This is the second experience I have had with him and each time I feel like they are trying to rip me off.
Description of Work: Purchased a Big Deal for $99 for a gas heating or cooling tune up. He came in and looked at it, came up stairs and said that I needed $625 more of work done on it. I said I didn’t want to spend that kind of money at this time of the year, because it was like November, not too far from Christmas. The price is guaranteed for like 60 days or something like that.

I cannot sing the praises of ARS highly enough. Steve came out more than once, trying to find the very best options for me, both in high efficiency performance, and style of system given the lay-out of my house. I was guided with the highest standard of customer service: consideration of my needs and wants, professionalism and expertise, cost-consideration, rebate-consideration, and the best fit for the layout of the house. Steve (Sales rep) and Linda (office customer-liason) made themselves available to me on many occasions, and went out of their way to obtain information and then to provide me with that information...at the install the technicians were very hard working, extremely efficient, clean and tidy, gave me options and suggestions to ensure that I would be the happiest going forward after the installation was completed; they worked through till 8pm on the second day to complete the project as a cold spell came through, so that we would have hot water and heat. I considered a total of seven proposals, and I would choose ARS in a heartbeat. I highly recommend them, without any reservations.
Description of Work: My heating system had to be replaced, and I wanted to install air conditioning simultaneously. Additionally it needed to address a very high level of internal air quality and exchange, and moisture control.

It went very well. David came on time as scheduled and did the work in a timely manner. He was neat and knowledgeable. He was able to figure out where the noise I was concerned about was coming from and he fixed the problem — even though it turned out not to be coming from the gas furnace. I appreciate his kindness and patience.

The technician came to my home on time. Upon arrival he had NO idea what was expected to be done under this special. He was completely unprepared, without tools or instruments. He simply went into the basement and in under a minute pointed out the aging expansion unit and insisted this needed to be replaced in order to resolve my issue. He quoted me $500 for the repair (in addition to the $99 I already paid), to which I agreed. I then asked him to complete the rest of the "tune up" I paid for, to which he kind of just shrugged off and said there was nothing more to be done. One week later another tech came over and installed the expansion unit. The install itself was very quick and the majority of the time was spent bleeding all the radiators in our home. Through the course of this process he outright said that the expansion unit had nothing to do with my initial issue. Bleeding the radiators was all that was required to get my home's heating back to normal. However, given the age of the furnace, needing to replace it was imminent. He offered to setup a free estimate for a furnace replacement, as he felt our unit was near end of life. I agreed and felt it would be good to have a number in mind for when the time comes. One week later, radiators are cold again and requiring further bleeding. This is common, especially in older buildings, but further proof that the service I paid for had ZERO impact on improving my issue. A few weeks later a sales representative came to my home, and again, in less than a minute, was able to look at my furnace and say "You didn't need a new expansion unit, this had nothing to do with your issue." He offered to take the cost of the expansion unit off of the furnace replacement, but that really doesn't suffice. I basically just sank $500 into an obsolete furnace that needs to be replaced regardless. All to fix an issue that should have been properly identified in that first visit.
Description of Work: I hired ARS via an Angie's List special offer for the $99 heating system tune-up in my victorian condo building. Our unit had been experiencing issues with distributing heat to all the radiators.

Good - I learned that the scope of the work was pretty straightforward (other than some performance measurements), e.g. washing filters around the condenser. But still good peace of mind to have someone a specialist do this.

Surprisingly worse than the Angie's List reviews lead me to believe it would go. They twice didn't show for appointments I scheduled with them and offered little remorse and no compensation for the inconvenience. The first time they weren't able to make it they did me the courtesy of calling, which I sincerely appreciated. They informed me the technician scheduled to visit my home that day was tied up on another job and I understand how that can happen, so I rescheduled. But the technician didn't show at all - nor did I receive a phone call, informing me they couldn't make it - for the follow up visit. I called the technician and he just bluntly informed me he was tied up on another job. I asked why he didn't call me, to let me know, and he told me that wasn't his job. I contacted ARS, via their online live chat, and the rep offered no remorse or anything other than to reschedule. It's frustrating that I'm expected to be home during the block of time specified by ARS (something like a four-hour block of time) but ARS has no accountability if they don't show. It seems appropriate that if ARS couldn't make it to the scheduled appointment they would offer something, like a free air filter or 10% off of a tune-up or SOMETHING. We finally did get an appointment on the calendar and they completed the tune-up of the heating system and it went fine. But when they checked out my humidification system they broke something and left the system leaking a steady drip of water. I called the technician, to let them know it was leaking, and he told me he couldn't come back that day. I called ARS and they didn't offer to send out anyone else. The system wasn't leaking before they showed, they break something, and once again ... no accountability, no offer of anything. They eventually replaced the humidification system, but the water line ridiculously curves up and around and against a wall. No idea why they did it this way and no explanation. Someone once informed me that many businesses which see success via positive Angie's List reviews end up getting overwhelmed and providing sub-par service over time. I think this is a prime example.

We had used them to do an oil burner tune up at another house, which went very well. This was a different location and different guy. This tech seemed competent enough, though when he put the system back together the thermocouple stopped working (the pilot light would not stay lit). He replaced it with a new part, and charged another $120 on top of that for less than 5 minutes additional work and a $10 part. So my $200 cleaning went up 60%. When I called to complain about the fact that I was charged so much for 5 minutes of work. The first question the manager asked was: when was the thermocouple last replaced? I was a bit incredulous and replied what difference does it make? My point was that it was working before he took the system apart so its age should not matter. Instead of explaining why he needed to know he immediately started yelling at me about how I was being rude. I had to say I did't know the age about 3 times before he listened. After it got through to him that "I don't know" was my answer, he stopped talking. I had to prod him to continue. He informed me that thermocouples need to be replaced regularly and the 200 cleaning did not include parts and labor for any repairs and that the 120 was the price (which still did not answer the question on why they would not cover a part that was working when the guy arrived). He did reverse the charge for the thermocouple, which was fair and I thanked him. If the guy did not reverse the charge, I would have given them all Fs.

Purchased 2 furnace tune ups. Scheduling was fast and professional. Technician showed up on time, and called ahead. Service was performed well, but needed motor in one furnace, and discovered leak in pvc pipe on the other. Returned next day with parts and completed satisfactorily. Was disappointed with price to repair pvc pipe $170, which was almost as much as to replace the motor $189, and took much less time. Spoke with John - said they charge a minimum for the repair. I felt that since the tech was already at the location that cost should be less than a dedicated call. John was not helpful and had a "tough - that's the way it is" attitude.

They were very professional, when I couldn't make to appointment they quickly rescheduled and called me when someone cancelled so that they could fit me in even earlier; which was greatly appreciated. The technician was very helpful and professional and fixed the problem in no time.

Tune up did not happen because he claimed the furnace was not working. I still ended up having to pay him for doing really nothing but telling me I had an issue. I had to call another service provider to do the tune up that I had already paid for. Don't waste your time calling ARS.

ARS installed my furnace about 6 years ago. Shortly after that, I began to experience problems with the furnace not turning on at times. I've had a few different techs out over the past couple of years to try and fix the problem, but it would continue to act up at times and for whatever reason would not turn on. This happened again a week or so ago and I called ARS to come out and see if they can fix it again. Since the problem never really seemed to get fixed, I was losing hope that I would ever have a furnace that would run properly again. This time I spoke with the service mgr John and explained the problems I have been having with my furnace. He personally came out to my home and diligently tried to pin point why my furnace would not turn on. He spent a few hours troubleshooting and checking all aspects of the furnace, and even put in a new thermostat thinking that may be the problem, however later that same day my furnace still would not turn on. I called ARS back and told them I was still having problems with the furnace not turning on and the service mgr came back out at 5pm that same day and continued to work on the problem. By process of elimination he then determined that the problems I've been having could be with the vent pipe. He came back the following day and went into the attic and looked through the vent pipe and sure enough there was a piece of tar paper from the roof lodged in the pipe. He removed it and sealed the vent pipe back up. My furnace now runs perfect! Thank you to the service mgr John for his diligence and commitment to fix the problem.
