It went very well. The work was very thorough and professional. I will use this company again next summer.

Providing follow-up report in an effort to be fair. The general manager sent a letter of apology (he had read the report on Angie's List) and sent a reimbursement check for $235. This is an excellent response and they deserve to be acknowledged for that. But I would probably not use them again because sometimes it's just difficult to use a company again after one has had a bad experience.
Description of Work: Unique came for two service calls to repair central a/c. Each visit had a different tech. First tech came and spent about 2+ hours trying to find the problem. He finally told us he identified the issue and we paid $235. We felt satisfied, the system was working, and wrote a good report. He told us we could sign up for a service plan which would save us money in future. Since we just had it repaired, we didn't see the need to sign up immediately. There was a cool period of time and then 90 degree heat started again. We turned on the a/c - no cool air. Called to have them come back and was asked about how we use the system, what are our expectations for the system, etc. I finally said, "Believe me, this is not operator error; the temperature is not moving after the system has been on for 12 hours." A different tech came and found another problem eventually and wrote out the bill. We said, why are we paying for all the labor again when the first tech didn't identify the real problem. Essentially we were paying for 3 hours of labor to have these issues identified. He slipped and said the first tech hadn't been with the company that long. Had to have two phone calls with Brett while the tech waited and negotiated off the service charge and an hour of labor, but still had to pay more than should have because one tech spent too much time and didn't find the real problem. Then, even though I'd requested a service plan and was told it would be sent in the mail, it was never received, and never got any communication. We used them because of Angie's List - but this was a major disappointment! We'll be using another company in the future.

I called Friday afternoon about an estimate, and was offered a clear cleaning cost per system (I did not realize, though I really should have, that I had four systems to clean and not two) and an opportunity to have workers in first thing Monday morning. The workers took a close look at my systems, were very attentive to what I wanted and why, and told me how much the work would cost before starting it. (There was a miscommunication where I thought they were giving me the cost of cleaning & filters, however, while they thought they were just telling me the cost of new filter installation.) Instead of doing the cleaning that day and coming back to do filter installation as originally planned, they arranged for the filters to be delivered that morning and finished the entire job by 2 p.m. despite extremely filthy equipment and very awkward access to the upstairs machines. They were consistently friendly and courteous, their work appeared to be excellent, and their prices seemed to be quite reasonable; my only reason for giving them the B on price is because we did have several miscommunications about what they were giving me the estimates *for*, all of them pretty clearly accidental. I'd recommend in the future that they jot down the price breakdown on paper, to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
Description of Work: We have two heating & cooling systems in our new house, which we suspected that the previous owner had not maintained in the 6 years since the house was built. We had both furnaces & both AC units properly cleaned, had a drip tray switch installed, and upgraded the intake filters on the AC units from 1-inch paper slip-ins to heavy-duty 6-inch top-of-the-line filters.

Overall satisfied. I initially thought that their hourly rate was high although they charged me only a fraction of their rate to troubleshoot. Needed to order the part and come back on a separate visit. They replaced a thermostat without a problem on a return visit. Accidentally overcharged on the amount of time and provided a refund without any hassle.

During an August heat wave, we finally decided we'd waited long enough (4 years) to upgrade an inadequate window a/c in our finished attic space, used as my spouse's home office. But we weren't sure what the best solution was: Did we need a bigger window a/c? A sunshade over the a/c? A through-the-wall a/c? A better attic ventilation system? We needed advice. I contacted several Heating and A/C contractors listed on Angie's List. One was a bit rude, suggesting that they couldn't help me unless I knew exactly what I wanted. Another couldn't help us until next spring. Finally, I contacted Unique Indoor Comfort, who were able to schedule a visit within just a couple of days. The salesperson arrived punctually, and understood immediately from the shoes piled in the front foyer that ours was a shoeless house. He obliged by removing his shoes without comment. After measuring the attic space, and discussing our needs, he recommended a 17,000 BTU Mitsubishi "Mr Slim" split ductless A/C unit, which they could install by the end of the following week, for $4,500. He did not suggest any other options for us. For example, he didn't know how effective window film (a popular and cheap way to reduce heat loss in winter and solar gain in summer) would be. He didn't propose any other brands. He left us with a written estimate and a slick Mitsubishi brochure, and we agreed to think it over. He also recommended an electrician to do the wiring part of the installation. I contacted him, and he came over promptly to give his estimate ($700) for the electrical work. Meanwhile, I did the requisite research into ductless a/c units in general, and the "Mr Slim" in particular, and concluded that this could be a good solution for us. Based on my past experience with electricians, the electrical estimate seemed reasonable, too. On installation day (the following week, as promised), the crew arrived on time. With everyone present (I, spouse, salesman, installers, electrician), we chose the best location for the interior and exterior parts of the system. Once I saw how compact the whole system was, I asked about putting one of these systems in my own home office, too. The sales guy gave me an estimate for the second unit (9,000BTU: $3500, installed). He said they could install it right then and there. Electrician asked for another $500. We discussed it for a few minutes, and said "Yes". By the end of the day, both units were installed. One was fully operational; the second required a return visit from the electrician, as he hadn't been expecting to install 2 units on such short notice. The installers left the house spotlessly clean. We are very pleased with the results. These "split ductless" units are astonishingly quiet (you easily can hold a phone conversation sitting right next to the interior unit). The process -- from first phone call through installation to final payment -- went quickly and smoothly.
Description of Work: Installation of two Mitsubishi "Mr Slim" split ductless air conditioning units, in two rooms of the house.

Wow! We've had a lot of work done on our house, but we've never had an experience as pleasant as this. If I had more homes (and more money), I would install a Unique system in every house! We had been wanting to get central air for years but had had to attend to other home improvement projects for years. When we decided to go ahead with the job and I began getting quotes from various companies, I intended to have a conventional system (as opposed to high velocity) in order to save money. However, both Brent (with whom I spoke over the phone) and Steve made compelling cases for the benefits of HV for our home. Steve gave me a quote immediately and a list of local references. The quote was competitive and the reference list was extraordinary. Usually when you ask contractors for quotes, they give you the contact info for few hand-picked customers who they know will say good things about their company. Unique, by contrast, gives you a list of all the installs they've done in your area. I called 4 of these folks and they all said the same thing: the system works great and dealing with the company was a pleasure. Having now had a system installed, I agree with these sentiments wholeheartedly. Danny and Dave, who did the installation, were unbelievably efficient and expert. Most quotes I received estimated 4 days to do the job. It took Unique a day and a half. The guys were on time, very courteous and communicative, and extremely adept at their work. They left no mess whatsoever. Steve, the technician who conducted the routine post-installation service visit, was equally as helpful in explaining to us how the system would work. The system itself works fabulously. It's quiet, it sucks the humidity out of the house in no time, it's easy to operate, and most importantly given the layout of our house, the ducts take up next to no space at all in our closets. I literally can't think of a single thing that would have made this a more pleasant experience. I highly recommend using Unique to perform your central air installation. This company consists of consummate professionals who install top-of-the-line systems for a very reasonable fee.
Description of Work: Unique installed a 3-ton high velocity central AC system in our 1500 square foot single-family home. In addition to the installation, Unique also sent a service tech out to go over the operation of the system with us and make sure everything was operating to specs (which it was).

They sent out a person to help me and the service man who came out couldn't find the leak. I called them a few days later and they sent out another service man and he located the leak very quickly. I called Unique after getting their name from the list online. When I called, I asked if they came to my area and they said yes. I explained that my air conditioning system had stopped working the day before and I needed someone to service it. Amazingly enough, I was asked if anyone was home because they would be able to have a service person look at my system in less than an hour! I was shocked! Not only did I find a reliable business but they were willing to do the work that day. Unheard of. Sure enough, about 40 minutes later, my wife called to let me know that a nice young man named John had arrived to fix the problem. By the time I got home at 5 o'clock the work was completed and the system was fixed and running. John explained what he had found and what he had done to fix the problem. Apparently, the system was low on coolant, needed to be tuned up and a new filter needed to be installed. I found John to be both knowledgeable and professional. He explained everything in detail and advised us on future recommended service. I still can't believe that I was able to get someone out so fast and have my air conditioning fixed so quickly. I can see why Unique has an A rating and will definitely refer them in the future.

The 18 year old furnace in the house we just bought quit in mid-winter. Unique sent a tech to check furnace out the day we called them. Tech showed us spots where old furnace's heat exchanger was near to rusting through, and explained some latenet problems with vent paths. We had to have ducts and flue cleaned; as soon as that work was done, Unique's crew was on site next day, on time. Did a good, careful job, stayed to finish adjustment, called the next week to schedule follow up visit to check on work. Would definitely hire Unique again!

We moved into an older house this fall and when it turned cold the furnace did not seem to work (and it worked fine at the home inspection). I called Unique to have someone come out and take a look as well as do an "annual service/cleaning". They sent someone later that same day and it turned out to be a switch we couldn't see! They cleaned and serviced the furnace and explained the basics of it to us. We'll have them come in annually. The furnace is old but in good condition - when we are ready for a new one we'll certainly call them.

It was easy to schedule a call within a fairly short time frame. Steve, the specialist, arrived on time on the appointed day. He was thorough in inspecting my heating system and, just as importantly, courteously answered all my naive questions. He couldn't re-route the drip line to drain outside, the way I had wanted, but he performed some adjustment. Overall, he spent over two hours at my house.

The work began the week after we signed the contract which estimated five days for the job. The company called two days ahead of their Monday arrival to confirm arrival times. Two men arrived Monday and worked solidly through each until about 3 p.m (they took no lunch breaks). Monday and Tuesday work centered on the attic: a new return air grille was cut and installed, the air handler was put in place and insulated tubing run to holes cut in the ceiling of the second floor rooms. Wednesday and Thursday the same process happened for the cellar to support vent holes up to the first floor rooms. Our electricians were able to start Wednesday as well putting in the 220v circuits. Friday the electricians and A/C people worked together to bring the system live by noontime. The A/C people stayed until about 2:30 p.m finishing trim work, vacuuming and caulking. Each day the local manager/owner (who had done the quote for us) visited the site to check work and progress.
Description of Work: Two condensers outside, one air-handler in the attic, one air-handler in the cellar and insulated tubing supporting a total of 25 vents in all rooms of our 1927 house were installed in the attic and cellar. Particulate matter media filters were installed on both air-handlers. For space and other reasons, the air handler in the cellar was hung from the ceiling. Water run-off from the air-handler piping was installed from the attic to outside, a pump in the cellar was installed to take water from the air-handler there up and outside. Four new 220v circuits were needed at various places in the house--this required outside electricians to be hired.

So-so: The cost structure was explained to me when I made my appointment as pay $89 for the visit and then extra for time and materials for any work that needed to be done, which I approved. Given that he did not really fix anything, I think the charge was a bit high since I was basically paying for him to estimate the potential bigger job of upgrading the system. That being said, the tech was friendly, knowledgeable and willing to explain/discuss the issues at hand. My wife and I are debating whether we should do the work; if we go ahead I would get a couple more estimates to check pricing, but would feel comfortable with Unique doing the work if their price turns out to be competitive.
Description of Work: Evaluation of a central A/C system which was not functioning well. The tech looked at both the evaporator and condenser units as well as at the duct work in the attic. The tech measured for an estimate and gave me some general advice on how to improve the performance in the meantime. I received a verbal estimate for upgrading the system ( $9K) but have not yet received a written copy.

Great. I sent an email via their website describing what I was looking for and received an email back within 24 hours with an explanation of what a preventative maintenance entailed, how often they should be done, and how much it would cost. I was invited to call to schedule an appointment which I did. I reached someone on the phone on the first try and scheduled an appointment for the following week. Work was done as scheduled and in a professional manner.

Quite pleased with everyone I worked with at Unique. Their price was competitive with other estimates I received and they were willing to explain the whole process in great detail. The work was done extremely quickly (two partial days), and the technician who came by to start the system up was also fantastic. We've been running the system off and on for about two weeks now and it works great. All the work was done with extensive drop cloths and care. Everything was left quite clean. The only very minor negative is that the original estimate forcasted a date for the work within the coming two weeks. The actual date of thew work was about three weeks from the estimate.
