 + 0 moreFinding steam boiler people who really know about steam boilers (and how steam heat systems work) was much more difficult than we thought it would be, but we found McNiff on Angie's List, and now we highly recommend them. We have a steam heat system in a 1929 house, with a ~1991 boiler. The house didn't heat evenly (the upstairs was always too cold, the sunroom was too hot), and one radiator dripped water at the valve... Jim serviced/flushed the boiler, replaced the vents with new adjustable ones, balanced them so that the house heats up at the same time, and tightened up the connections on the leaky radiator (it wasn't a major dripping problem). The upstairs is now warm for the first time ever, and Jim even honored an Angie's List coupon that I'd forgotten to print. It took 1 or 2 hours, start to finish. Jim had previously quoted a price, repeated the quote in writing before he started working that morning, answered questions, worked quickly, didn't make a mess, etc. Basically, it's great service.
Description of Work: Service the 20yr old boiler (steam heat, natural gas), replace the vents on all the steam radiators in the house and balance the system (so house warms up evenly), stop a radiator from dripping.

 + 1 moreJames did a great job. He was in and out and 4 days later we had a new heating system. He had some trouble getting in touch with National Grid, but I blame this entirely on National Grid, as there were multiple problems in getting our heating from them. There was difficulty picking up the new heater as National Grid had failed to inform itself when it had installed the gas line that it had done so and so no one had sent any release form to the company supplying the heaters to release it to anyone, nor had they sent Mr. McNiff any information on when or where to pick up the heater, or that it was ready for pick up. In short, overall, I was very pleased with Mr. McNiff's service and would and will use him again. I was extremely displeased with the service National Grid provided, although some of their operators did work very hard for me to figure out what was going on in their system which seems to have grown too large for itself and to get my order straightened out. I do want to thank them for putting in the effort.
Description of Work: We hired James McNiff to handle our oil to gas conversion. While I can list many many complaints about National Grid and job that they did - their losing my paperwork, prolonged waiting period, different aspects of the same service not communicating with each other, forgetting to send out necessary paperwork, cutting the wires to my outdoor lights when they went to install the gas line, and I still haven't received my rebate, to name a few - James did an excellent job. He gave me a good rate, gave his recommendations, but was completely fine when my ultimate decision with what to purchase for a boiler did not reflect his initial recommendations. He gave good advise, was punctual, pleasant, and professional. When National Grid finally got its act together and installed my gas line, James McNiff was able to schedule the work to be done within the week regardless of the fact that my phone call was out of the blue after waiting months for National Grid to act. It took him 3.5-4 days to get rid of the old heating equipment, run a pipe line in the basement to where the new gas line was placed outside, install the new heater and water heater and outdoor regulator, get the inspection and the new meter hung. He was in and out and I think he did a great job. We've been enjoying our much more affordable heating ever since. I would and will call him again as soon as our gas stove comes in.

 + -1 moreAfter reading some good reviews of this individual, I decided to request a quote from him. When I phoned, he was friendly and agreed to come to the house that Sat to look at the job. He arrived in the time window we had agreed upon and I showed him to the basement to see the system. He listened to what I said, asked some good questions and made a few remarks that showed he understood what I was trying to accomplish. He took down some contact info and said he would email me a quote for the main work as well as a ball park estimate for an additional option. After approx 10 days, I still hadn't heard back from him, so I emailed to followup. My presumption was that he had tried to email the estimate but it hadn't made it to me. Six days later I received an email apologizing for the slow response and informing me that he would be unable to take the job because he had accepted a project that would keep his company busy for several months. At a high level, I liked Jim and would probably have engaged him for the work; but I do wish he would have been more responsive and let me know he wouldn't be available as soon as possible. That said, if I have other work in the future, I will probably consider him; but would make sure we set expectations with regards to the dates I should expect his responses.
Description of Work: The needed service was an oil to natural gas conversion for my home heating system, with the possibility of convreting from steam to hot water heat at the same time.

 + 0 moreThe new toilet is fine. The sink is still clogged. Having moved three times during renovations I had many things to focus on and did not have the energy to fight. This was on the back burner until your request prompted me.
Description of Work: Initially I called James McNiff Plumbing to clear a clogged bathroom sink and get information on a tankless water heater and handicap toilet. He told me he does not like to "do clogs" but it should be easy and he would come. He arrived on time and snaked the sink. When it was no better he returned to try professional strength drain cleaner which did not work. He then gave a long story about the roof vent not allowing proper air flow due to the extreme amount of snow on the roof and would get better when the snow melted. Being a nurse not a plumber I believed him. While waiting for the snow to resolve I contracted him to place a handicap or "comfort" toilet. This was done well but the "all inclusive price" changed 3 times. He discovered he had the wrong toilet after he carried it upstairs. When he returned and the install was complete he asked me what he quoted for it because he did not write it down and couldn't remember. He charged $150 more than he told me for "this and that." (gaskets etc. or perhaps to recoup lost time) Don't ask why I paid this but I did. I never heard back from him to follow up on the clog. NO I Would NOT recommend James McNiff Plumbing.

 + 0 moreAwesome. Jim and his apprentice are the BEST. I wish we had found them years ago, but now that we have, I cannot imagine ever hiring someone else to work on plumbing related jobs at our house. Honest, responsive, shows up on time, does what he says he is going to do. Not sure what else I could ask for. We started off with asking Jim to repipe our steam wet return. Many other plumbers wanted to take shortcuts and use copper, which we did not want used on our steam system. Other plumbers did not have the right equipment and were not capable of threading the pipe on site. Jim threaded the IPS on site and ran the pipe beautifully as we requested. Next we had Jim come back and rough in all of the bathroom plumbing required for us to pour a new basement floor. We intend to hire Jim come back to complete the job when we are ready. Finally, we had Jim return and resolve many items on our "Plumbing To Do List", including replacing an old toilet with a beautiful Drake II, supplying us filtered water to our fridge for the ice maker, and cleaning up various sloppy plumbing messes in our house.
Description of Work: Repipe full steam heat wet return lines in IPS (black iron) in order to run them off of a floor that is being finished in the basement Rough in basement bathroom drains and sewerage basin / ejector (Will have him back to complete bathroom when we are ready) Remove existing toilet, supply and install new Toto Drake II toilet Connect filtered water supply line to freezer ice maker Correct various plumbing problems caused by sloppy work from prior plumbers

 + -1 moreJim was able to come out on the day I requested to provide 2 estimates for plumbing work. He was on time, professional, and provided fair estimates for the work requested. We decided to have him install a new outdoor faucet, in order to attach a hose for watering. He was able to come out within a couple of days, and quickly and professionally installed the faucet. He added an additional shut off valve, just to be on the safe side, as well as a frost-proof faucet, so we wouldn't have to worry about winterizing it. The job was done quickly and with high quality. I'd definitely use Jim again for other plumbing needs!

 + -1 moreBack in the fall of 2009, I was doing a kitchen remodeling which included adding a half bath. Jim came to my rescue when my GC went "bad" and disappeared. Jim came in and did a great job of roughing in and finishing the half bath's plumbing, moving a steam pipe over in the wall, and installing my new sink and kitchen faucet. I have since hired Jim to do a couple other jobs for me. He always does great work at a fair price and with a great deal of professionalism (shows up on-time and leaves the place neat and clean, etc).

 + -1 moreEverything went great, as usual Jim got right back to me after I e-mailed him with what I needed done. This sump system is a little complicated as it includes 2 pumps in the hole with a battery backup on 1 of them (so things fit tightly in the hole), but Jim and Ryan got everything done with no problems, and then they tested everything to make sure it worked properly. I can't say enough good things about Jim and the quality of his work - he has done a number of things for us over the years including: replacing a gas hot water heater, fixing leaking pipes, replacing a gas line into an oven, installing a new toilet, and installing a new outdoor faucet. What I appreciate about Jim are: his prices are always fair, he always gets back to me quickly, his work is always great, he always cleans up after the job, and he is always friendly to speak to. I would highly recommend Jim to amyone looking for a good plumber they can count on.
Description of Work: Jim did a number of things on a sump pump system in my basement including: replacing check valves, replacing PVC pipe coming out of the pumps to make it easier to get the pumps in and out of the sump hole, installing weep holes in the pipes coming out of the pumps, and installing a backup PVC pipe system out of the system.
