Excellent job! Peter doesn't cut corners, he does things right. This gives me great peace of mind. Both chimneys now look great and will be trouble-free for years. Peter was prompt, neat and courteous, a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Repoint 2 brick chimneys on 2nd floor roof of an aging Malden 2-family, and repoint and stabilize with stucco a deteriorating chimney in attic. Check and re-tar flashing on roof.
Peter Maguire was prompt, professional and courteous throughout, providing a thorough assessment of the job, and doing really high quality masonry work for a very fair price. Unlike many contractors who leave hired hands to do the work, he does much of the work himself and his small crew is well-chosen and always supervised, so you know things are done right. I can't recommend Peter Maguire highly enough- he is a craftsman who really cares about doing the best job possible. He is also a genuinely nice person who communicates well, calls back promptly, shows up, and completed my project on schedule. I was quite impressed with the quality of the work and no longer worry about my basement! Peter was a pleasure to work with and I would definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: This was a big job: to stabilize a deteriorating rubble stone foundation of my 1910 Malden house, correct site drainage issues an install a retaining wall near the house, and add a stable & clean plaster coat to the interior and exterior of the whole foundation.

Peter did not perform the work and I decided to use someone else.
Description of Work: First, I will state that I contacted Peter because he is highly rated on Angie's List. He may do quality work, but the lack of professionalism he displayed while I was trying to obtain a quote for chimney work was exceptional - hence the review. In late September 2011 I spoke with Peter directly, and he agreed to come out and quote me for a chimney repair (I had received previous quotes from three other companies so I had a very good idea of cost & labor for what I needed done.) After 1 1/2 weeks of miscommunication - calls not returned, text messages without a response, showing-up at my house unannounced with no one home - he appeared early one weekday morning unannounced, just as I was getting out of the shower for work. I threw on some clothes and showed him what needed to be done: internal firebox / damper repair (which he does not do) and rebuilding of the chimney from the roofline up with a stainless steel cap. Standing outside, we looked at the chimney and asked what was wrong - I told him it leaked and it needed a new cap. He replied that the chimney clearly was not "professionally done", but that it could be re-pointed. I asked him why would I pay to re-point something that clearly needed to be re-built. He then quoted me a price for re-pointing only at $2600.00, which was the cost I received from two other companies for a full chimney re-build including a new stainless cap! When I told him this, his tone became rude, saying "Well I won't waste your time then!" Then muttered something under his breath to me as he walked to his car.

Response from Maguire Masonry
It never ceases to amaze me what people will write, say to justify their behavior. I bent over backwards to accommodate this member. Not only did I return his calls and texts every time, I set up several appointments which he declined for one reason or the other. I had some available time one morning and called by his house unannounced (I did try calling) . This person answered the door in a foul mood (sorry for calling unannounced, it was a last resort to countless attempts on my behalf. This individual then commenced to inform me what was with wrong with his chimney and how it should be repaired and totally disregarded my opinion and experience. I then told him politely that he should consider someone else for the job or perhaps repair it himself as his knowledge was far superior to mine on this matter. I was astounded that someone could be so ignorant after the work I put into this correspondence. Furthermore I never ever give a quote on the spot I always forward a definitive proposal to potential customers. I have had years of the most pleasurable experiences with lots of members here and made many new friends. Please take a minute and read through my reports. Sincerely. Peter Maguire. Maguire Masonry.

They did an excellent job: we had to wait a little longer than expected in July for them to start, but once they came they were excellent, arrived on time each day, very detail oriented. They have just returned and done the inside rooms, again later than expected, d/t a wet summer and their schedules getting pushed back. Peter is sometimes slow at returning phone calls re when they will start a project, if he is feeling guilty about starting later than we expected! Despite that one problem we will totally use them again.
Description of Work: They totally remade our 30 concrete steps and balconies between flights, they repointed much of our brick house, they retiled the floors of 2 small inside rooms.

Peter was the most detailed, professional, and knowledgeable seeming of the three people who came to get estimates. He gave appropriate and enough information, and always communicated in a timely and professional manner. His work was impeccable.
Description of Work: Peter Maguire and his workmen repointed the lower perimeter of the house, rebuilt a small piece near the back stairs, and strengthened and plastered an interior basement wall. They dug into the ground on certain sections and poured a flexible concrete. He also looked at our chimney but deemed that work was not necessary on it.

The company is great. I got them off angie's list when we first bought our house and needed to have our garage tuck-pointed. His quote came in at about half of the price of other bidders. He was prompt, reliable, friendly, courteous around my kids and did an excellent job. Could not have been more pleased! Since then, we've hired him to do our foundation (including painting) and chimney brick repair (most recently). He is consistent every time and does great work. Will continue to use him.

Peter and his crew are a joy to work with. He came and brainstormed about designing the patio (we did not have a landscape architect), met me at the stone yard to pick out the stone, installed the stone, kept the work site neat and clean, stayed with the job until it was perfect. The stone was more expensive than expected, but Peter covered a portion of the additional cost himself. He even played a tune on a penny whistle for my 5 year old, and gave him the whistle. (Peter is an accomplished musician as well as mason.) I recommend him as highly as I possibly could. If I could give him an A+++++ , I would. He's very busy (a good sign itself, given the poor economy). So, even if you have to wait for him to fit you into the schedule, it's well worth it to have a dedicated tradesman you can trust completely.
Description of Work: Peter and his crew repointed two badly deteriorated chimneys, installed 2 chimney caps, installed a natural stone patio, and applied stucco to the walls of a bulkhead.

Promptly answered my phone call and followed up with an e-mail estimate within a few days. Arrived when "promised" and finished the job within the estimated time frame. Explained some extra work that was required but it was all included in the original price. He was always very polite and friendly. It was a pleasure working with him. see above. Peter came to see the work to be done, then never responded with the estimate, and did not respond to my phone calls asking for it.
Description of Work: Asked for an estimate to re-build and re-point front stairway to house. Peter came, as scheduled, looked at the stairs, and as requested during the visit, looked at the basement for possible work to be done on basement walls. (repair and waterproofing) Measured the basement for an estimate. Seem very pleasant and we had a long conversation about the work to be done, etc. In spite of all the time he spent with me, I never heard back from him. It was extremely disappointing and frustrating, as he did not return any calls after that visit.

Peter and two workers arrived on Monday, around 7 a.m. to start the removal and prep work of all old stucco and paint from staircase When I returned home from work, all the bonding was applied, and covered. On Tuesday a.m., the workers returned and completed most of the cement work. On Wednesday, they returned to clean up the stairs and pick up the tools. I am completely satisfied with the work and already recommended Peter to one of my friends I will definitely call Peter again if I have more masonry projects. Thank you Angie's List.
Description of Work: Repair of front entrance steps. All joints in bricks on brick treads cut out to a depth of 1 inch and repointed using a strong portland cement and lime mixture. Loose bricks were removed and relaid. Old stucco was removed from sides and refinished which resulted in a smooth even finish. Mesh was used to strengthen sides.

Peter returned my initial phone call within hours, came out and gave me a very fair estimate and began work ahead of schedule. We had not originally planned on having the deck washed & stained but were so happy with the work that we added that on. The crew showed up when they said they would and worked long hours, even doing a few things that hadn't been part of the estimate. They were extremely professional and cleaned up everything before leaving. A great outfit, I look forward to working with them again.

Peter is the consummate professional who takes great pride in his work and takes the time and care to make sure he and his team have done everything the right way. Our house is 90 years old, and when we bought it last year we knew that the chimney looked like it needed some re-pointing in the attic, but that it wasn't yet urgent. Then, at some time after having a chimney liner and cap installed (by another company), I started to notice water dripping down one face of the chimney in the attic when it rained. It was just a small leak, but it was taking a toll quickly on the old mortar. I contacted 4 different highly rated contractors from Angie's list for estimates. Peter Maguire took the time to explain that the problem could be a result of loose flashing, but he also pointed out to me that the top of the chimney was missing some bricks and water can get in that way, too. He said that he's unfortunately seen this situation often, where a chimney liner and cap are not installed carefully and the top of the chimney is damaged in the process. The damage was indeed quite noticeable looking up from ground level once it had been pointed out. None of the other companies that I contacted mentioned the damaged top of the chimney. One company recommended that I re-build the entire chimney from the basement up, which seemed to me to be obvious overkill (the mortar in the basement was holding up fine, and the mortar toward the floor of the attic was still strong and not crumbling either). Peter had emailed me a written proposal so that I could easily understand what his approach would be. I knew from his proposal that he knew it would be important to use a mortar that would be appropriate for such an old chimney (mortar from 90 years ago has a different composition from modern mortar and you have to ensure the correct mixture of lime and portland cement to get a strong bond with the old mortar). We met in person to go over the contract and sign it. Peter made sure I understood what he was going to be doing and why he would do it that way. While I did receive a lower price estimate from one of the other companies, I believe that Peter's proposed solution made more sense and would be stronger and much longer lasting. He and his co-worker arrived on time, took photos and emailed them to me as they worked to show the before, during, and after stages, cleaned up well after themselves, and clearly took pride in their work.
Description of Work: Re-pointed exterior portion of chimney, repair of top of chimney, fixed and sealed flashing, re-pointed exposed portion of chimney in attic and reinforced with metal lath and finished with portland cement and lime mixture.

We were very happy with the result overall. We initially hired him to do just the walk, but in the process of doing that he took care (at no real extra charge) of a few minor projects in the vicinity that I had been putting off, like fixing the stone wall on the side of the house, and pouring a concrete floor for the storage area under the front steps. He also pulled apart the side steps to verify that they were sound, and replaced them again afterwards. Peter also noticed that the front of the house needed repointing (a project I had been putting off), and volunteered to take care of that too, for a very reasonable fee, since he was there already. All the work was done to an excellent standard. Peter clearly takes great satisfaction in a job well done, and it looks great.
Description of Work: Tearing up the old concrete walkway around the house, replacing with stone. Limestone steps leading up to the house. Repointing the masonry on the columns in front of the house. fixed my own botched job of repointing the stone wall on the side of the house. poured a concrete base in the storage area under the porch

Peter did an excellent job. He and his team removed all the old molding/concret as far back as they could into the foundation. they also dug several inches down into the ground along the foundation and dug out the old molding/concrete. They then "repointed" the foundation using some sort of mortar mix that has a little bit of flexibility so that any shifting of the foundation over time does not cause the mortat to crack and then let water in. Peter and his team were prompt and started the work when they said they would, they were very clean and at the end of each day they cleaned up and left the place as clean if not cleaner than when they left it. Once all the work was done peter showed me the results of the work. Overall I was extremely satisfied with the work that was done and I would hire Peter in the futuer for additional work as necessary (such as repointing our chimney)
Description of Work: We contracted with Peter to repoint our fieldstone foundation. The concrete between the stones was old and crumbling and falling out. Peter was recommended to us by our neighbor who had used his services in the past. We actually met with several potential contractors prior to deciding to use Peter. Peter was very professional, reasonably priced (although not the least expensive) and was very thorough and complete in describing the work that needed to be done, the approach he would use and the time /cost that it would take to complete the work. As a result of this and based on our neighbors experneice we elected to go with Peter.
