We had another mason tell us that we needed to completely rebuild one of our chimneys and repoint the other two. Peter informed us that we just needed to repoint all three. When he was done, it was obvious that he was correct. They look like new, well new with beautiful old brick. They are straight and solid. Rebuilding wasn't necessary at all. He didn't try to take us for more money than necessary. We have foundation repointing and a retaining wall that needs to be addressed. We will definitely be using Peter for that. It is rare to find integrity and quality of craftsmanship these days like he brings to the table.

Peter was incredible. Wonderful guy that takes great pride in his work. Right from the start he responded quickly to my request for an estimate. He came out a day or so later, talked through the job with me and had a quote over to me a day later. Once we agreed, he came out once again to sign the contract with me in person. He estimated that he wouldn't be able to begin for about 5-6 weeks, but he ended up starting after 4 weeks. Peter and Daniel did an incredible job. They were at our house for 5 days and were always very punctual, respectful, and diligent in their work. They take great pride in the integrity of the work and you can tell that they really love what they do. We are thrilled with the results. I would 100% recommend Peter Maguire Masonry.
Description of Work: We needed outside stairs, side walls, and brick landing to be repaired. Also, needed repointing done on our chimney and needed a chimney cap (brick and bluestone).

Peter was nice and easy to deal with. Straight forward with the estimated time and cost. He estimated 2-3 days to rebuild 1 chimney and replace badly deteriorate bricks and re-point another chimney. Work was scheduled and promptly and professionally done as described in 2 days. Would recommend and hire again.

Peter was very professional with a pleasant personality; he thoroughly explained the process necessary to repair all the steps, communicated with me often, and was a pleasure to work with. His helper Daniel was a hard worker who worked long days. The repairs were excellent! I am very pleased to have found Peter to do this work.

I left a message explaining the job and Peter got back to me very quickly. I couldn't be more pleased that Peter took on the job. Daniel, his assistant, showed up before Peter and was setting up the staging. Peter kept me up to date on exactly what he was doing by taking pictures on his phone and sharing them as he was working. Would highly recommend.
Description of Work: One brick had already fallen off my chimney and by the time Peter came by to assess the job more bricks had fallen off. Mine is an old house and nothing had been done to the chimney in years,

I was very happy with Peter and Daniel through all phases of their work. The first thing that impressed me was that Peter returned my call within the first day that I left him a voicemail. He promptly scheduled a site visit for the next day to appraise the situation and provide an estimate. Peter's general high level of professionalism and organization was refreshing and really made me feel confident that he was a good choice of a service provider. Both Peter and his apprentice, Daniel, showed up promptly at 7am each work day and while Peter occasionally left the site to supervise other projects, Daniel worked long hard days to complete the projects exactly on schedule. I could tell Peter was himself doing or at least supervising the critical steps, but he also closely trusts and has trained Daniel. There were a few extra touches that Peter and Daniel did; these were small things like expanding the size of the concrete slab at no additional cost because they found more broken concrete than was initially evident. Peter also noticed that the existing concrete patio drained poorly in spots so he offered to drill some drainage holes, which worked well and fixes a separate problem we had. I really liked how Peter sent pictures via txt a few times each day to show what they had accomplished that day. He also txt'd freely to update on progress and updates for the next day with respect to weather, etc. I was so happy with the job they did on the back chimney that I had him stay to improve the foundation, and second chimney. I'm happy to have found a solid mason who is reliable, honest, and prompt.
Description of Work: Repaired the crumbling base of a brick chimney that a previous homeowner had badly neglected for many years. Peter and his worker, Daniel, disassembled the old crumbling masonry and broken parts and replaced with new brick. He also poured a new concrete slab at the base of the chimney after removing the old broken slab. I also had Peter and Daniel repair a second chimney on the roof of the house; they removed the old tar and wrapped it in metal mesh then applied a new layer of cement, which encased the old deteriorating brick in a new smooth layer of concrete, giving a stucco look. He put new tar and flashing where the chimney meets the roof line. Foundation work involved similar stucco-like finish over original fieldstone foundation, which had crumbling joints. They dug a trench down in the soil adjacent to the foundation so that the new masonry layer would descend below grade and provide better protection from water infiltration. Before replacing the soil, they applied a layer of tar below grade to further seal out moisture.

Description of Work: Repaired brick and stone front stairs.
Every aspect of dealing with Peter Maguire was what one could hope for with a contractor / mason. His response to inquiries was punctual; communication was clear and informative, the work was done promptly, efficiently, and with care. Peter mentioned issues he observed, suggested remedies, and went out of his way to communicate. He and his one assistant were the ones present on the job site and we always felt secure having him on the job and on our property. We received updates throughout the day on progress as the job moved along. I can't imagine a better experience and would certainly work with Peter and Daniel again!

Honestly, it was a pretty bizarre situation. Peter came out to quote on pouring a new concrete floor on the basement which went well enough. Upon leaving the basement, we walked passed the front steps at the condo association, which are in need of repair (like 2-3 years ago). Some of the mortar is loose but still in place, and for whatever reason he decided to show me how loose it was and pulled it out. I expressed my dismay that he ripped it out, since there isn't money in the budget currently to replace the stairs. In a remarkably unprofessional manner, Peter got extremely angry claiming I was questioning his integrity and that he didn't want to work with me or our association if I felt that him removing loose mortar was inappropriate. He started acting belligerent and said I wasted his time and I'm not serious etc etc. This was really frustrating as we seriously plan to do the floor and I have no idea why a vendor thinks its okay to touch items that aren't in the immediate plans for repair. He stormed off and I never heard from him again (unsurprisingly). Peter seemed like a decent guy but I am happy this incident with him acting so childish occurred before I might have hired him for a job.

Response from Maguire Masonry
Dear Angie's List Customers, please let me preface my response, to say that I don't check these reviews often enough to respond. I like My [Member Name Removed]'s opening statement "Honestly it was a pretty bizarre situation" That is most certainly was ! After several phone calls I did manage to arrange an apt with Mr [Member Name Removed]. When I arrived on site, I waited for about 15 mins for him to show and frankly I thought I was at the wrong address ! The building was utter squalor, garbage strewn everywhere and a junk car abandoned (this in the middle of Brookline really surprised me) While waiting I looked briefly around the building (I wasn't sure this man knew what had and had not to be surveyed) and noticed that it had been repaired several times, extremely poorly, in other words unprofessionally. When Mr [Member Name Removed] arrived we made straight for the Basement which was up there with some of the worst dwellings I have encountered in all my yrs as a contractor. Their was debris, garbage and junk to ceiling height. He then went into a rant about a hoarder who lived in the building and how hard it was to negotiate with the other owners. Mr [Member Name Removed], straight away decided to impart with me his expertise knowledge of masonry engineering practice on what should and should not be done (and also what other contactors told him, many I would assume) to rectify the problems. When I finally did inform him that his floor was a major undertaking and a fairly expensive project, I felt he was rather dismayed. We then moved outside to look at the wall and steps of the property. I pointed out to him the deterioration of the mortar on the steps and removed a small piece by hand conservatively 3 inches ( a child could have removed it , it was so bad. At this stage Mr [Member Name Removed] was the one that got agitated ! Questioning my professionalism and expertise A t this point I got really annoyed at the fact he could be so rude and ill mannered given the time I provided him. I wasted a lot of time on phone calls, drove from the north shore of Boston and spent approx. 45 mins listening to him ! It was at this stage I told him he was completely wasting my time and I had no interest in him or his work. A little long winded, but the long and short of it was this individual was an expert in the field of masonry looking for a cheap job. Maguire Masonry is not interested in these type of people or projects. We have serious regard for the work we choose to carry out. We don't do cheap or patch jobs. We are professionals with pride in what we do. Peter Maguire. Maguire Masonry

Peter inspected the chimney and determined that it was best to delay the work for a couple of years. I appreciated his honesty, as I think it was clear that I would not have questioned a recommendation to perform work. He also provided some thoughts on ways to get the most bang for my buck - in this case, stuccoing both the chimney and foundation - when the time comes to perform the work. With the advanced notice, it will make it easier to budget for this work - which I really appreciate. Peter will certainly be my first call in a couple years or if similar issues creep up in the meantime.
Description of Work: I had been told that my chimney was in need of repointing. Peter stopped by and provided a free inspection of my chimney.
This is the second job we've used Peter. Peter and Daniel rebuilt our front steps and walk that were rebuilt by another contractor four years ago. The blue stone steps lifted this past spring and became a safety concern. Peter removed, replaced, and refaced all the blue stone that was installed by the previous contractor. He replaced the steps with single pieces of 2 inch blue stone, leveling and adjusted the rise (height) of each step. This is another correction, as previous steps were not level and the rise between steps varied up to 1 1/2 inch difference! The blue stone walk was reset in a 4 inch concrete/cement base and the spaces between the stones were grouted with cement that was dyed to match the blue stone. The walk was correctly pitched for proper drainage. The job was started and completed as promised and price that was quoted. The job is fully guaranteed. We are extremely pleased with the out come. Living on a major roadway, there have already been a number of people passing the house that have complimented us on the front walk and steps! Will definitely use Maguire Masonry and Painting again and highly recommend them to all.
Description of Work: Rebuilt front steps and walk.
Overall it went well. Peter was personable, prompt, and available outside of traditional 8-5 M-F hours, and the work was done when he said it would be. When there was rain forecast for the day the chimney work was to be done, he let us know in advance that he'd have to postpone by a day for safety reasons. There was one section of stone that he thought had only cracked in three spots but it turned out to have cracked in eight, but he maintained that he would keep the original quoted price; we appreciated him holding to the quote. We've never had masonry done before so it's hard to comment expertly, but it seems to be quality work. There were two issues at the end. The top step has two small but obvious cracks. We asked about it and was told that it's nothing to worry about. As that may be the case, truthfully, it's hard not to worry about it, and it aesthetically we were hoping for no visible cracks. Second, the individual who had done the work had mixed the cement on one of the plant beds on the side and had left a large patch of cement stuck to the ground. Peter sent the individual the very next day, but he didn't take care of the cement. When we called that to Peter's attention, he made sure it was removed the next day. We gave N/A for price and quality because we don't know enough to comment meaningfully on it.

We highly recommend Peter Maguire (Maguire Masonry and Painting, Stoneham, MA). We live in an old house, and flakes of yellow brick were falling off a section of our fireplace chimney. Peter came promptly to look at our problem. He explained that the old yellow bricks were softer than what are used today, and ours have been further weakened by decades of water and ice. Damage should be repaired and bricks protected to avoid further deterioration. We were delighted when he recommended a repair that didn?t involve rebuilding the chimney. We agreed to his proposal, and he fit us into his busy schedule within a month. He had the necessary skills, help, and equipment to do the job. He and his helper did magic with wire brushes, mortar, metal lathe, and masonry paint to give us a smooth new-looking chimney. They kept to schedule, protected our property and plants, and cleaned up well afterwards. I would hire Peter again, but I know it won?t be for this chimney, which looks good for life. Besides his outstanding work, he?s a nice and honest guy.

We contacted Peter Maguire three years ago after other masons told us our chimney needed emergency repair. Peter told me there was no rush for the repair and to call him in a couple of years. After three and a half years and this brutal past winter, I finally called Peter. At this time I also needed new front steps and some work on a section of the foundation. Peter was responsive, prompt, and his estimates were in line. Peter even threw in some work over and above the original agreement The quality of the work was excellent. His design for our front steps was better than we'd hoped. I would definitely recommend Maguire Masonry and Painting to my friends.

We recently obtained four estimates to completely repair a set of front steps.Peter came by to assess the work when he said he would and explained in detail exactly what needed to be done. The quote he gave us was very reasonable so we decided to hire him to complete the job. Peter and his helper Daniel did a great job repairing the steps and also did some extra masonry reapir work not included in the origainal quote at no extra charge. The new steps came out very good and we would not hesitate to hire Peter again if the need arose.

I cannot recommend Maguire Masonry highly enough. A++++ If you need masonry work, this is the company to hire! Top notch work from a truly honest, competent and reliable owner and his crew. All the while, reasonably priced and an unconditional guarantee for 20 years! I couldn't have been more impressed with this company and am so happy that we chose them. Peter and his worker were both very honest, professional and on time each and every morning. This job lasted several weeks upon which Peter and his worker, Daniel worked diligently from 7am through to after 6pm. It was clear that a great deal of attention to detail was important to Peter, the owner, and therefore, Daniel. This ended up being a larger job than anticipated yet no corners were cut and, rather they worked longer hours and weekends to get it done correctly and within a reasonable period of time. It was truly a pleasure dealing with Peter Maguire of Maguire Masonry from the first time in meeting him for the estimate through to the last day. He is straight forward, easy to communicate with, honest and his work speaks for itself. Daniel was equally professional, respectful and hard working - VERY hard working!!! Peter kept me up to date with progress as the job continued - greatly appreciated. This is a large residential building and we are all very happy with the work performed!!!
Description of Work: All joints in brick work were cut out and repointed for 3 sides of my building's foundation. Loose bricks were removed and reset/replaced. Also, Maguire Masonry sealed around windows and lintels with rubber. A small trench was excavated at a base of one wall in order to properly seal brickwork of foundation below grade. Brickwork foundation below grade was cleaned and coated with foundation sealer (tar). New blacktop patch implemented once trench was filled. All brickwork was painted with a clear masonry sealant.

We recently hired Peter Maguire to repoint our front entryway brick steps. Peter promptly came over to assess the work and quickly provided us with an estimate which was very reasonable and fair. The quality of the workmanship was first-rate and done with care and attention to detail. He went the extra distance after the job was finished and cleaned and swept the entire driveway off (some dust had blown onto the driveway during the work), and also reset some loose bricks along the path leading up to the steps (neither were expected). Peter is a reliable, experienced and excellent mason and it's obvious he cares about customer satisfaction. We recommend him most highly and would definitely hire him again for any future masonry work.

Peter and his worker showed up at the time and date agreed. He took before pictures to show us what he would do and why. He also showed us finished pictures. He removed the cap and loose bricks and relaid, set cap back, removed old caulk from around flashing and joints on entire chimney were cut out with diamond blade saw to depth of at least 1 inch, Used strong Portland cement and lime mixture for repointing. Applied clear masonry sealant to chimney, Removed all debris from driveway. Peter completed the job in the time stated. Pictures look almost like a new chimney. Excellent job.

It went fine. He was prompt and courteous. My original estimate was $800 but there was extra work to be done once he got into the wrok. He gave me the option of not having the extra work done but I wanted to ensure this crack did not result in a leak so I opted for the additional work. I waited until now to write this review because I wanted to see if the repair would stand the test of time and here it is--lots of snow and melting and no leaking. I'm pleased with the work.
Description of Work: Fixed a large crack on my chimney and re-stucco'ed the repair.
