We needed both the top and the bottom of the chimney repaired. Peter and his crew did a terrific job. They set up staging on our very steep roof, cleaned out broken mortar, and completely repointed the chimney. They also installed a new chimney cap (the old had blown off in a storm). I liked that Peter suggested using a red dye in the new mortar to tone down the red & white contrast. Looks great. In the basement, meanwhile, at the very bottom of the chimney, the bricks had turned to dust from years of moisture and corrosion. At places, you touch touch the liner inside the chimney by placing a finger through the eroded bricks. They cleaned out the brick dust, replaced broken bricks, fixed mortar and then covered the bottom three feet of chimney in cement to hold it all together firmly for years to come. The crew cleaned everything up and left the place immaculate. Furthermore, Peter is a delightful guy to work with--straightforward, honest, cheerful, and a real pro at what he does. At a previous house (2006), he repointed our entire brick foundation for a very reasonable price, and the work was outstanding. This second experience with Peter has been every bit as satisfactory.
Description of Work: Chimney on roof repointed, new chimney cap installed. Chimney in basement repaired and solidified.

We are very happy with the appearance of the chimney after the work was completed. Peter was able to come by to estimate the work within 1-2 days of when I first contacted him. He promptly delivered an estimate via email and gave us a timeframe within when he could complete the work. Peter again returned to the house to bring a formal contract and collect a deposit after I indicated we wanted to move forward with the work. He then showed up on the agreed date and completed the work. It was a very smooth process, and I was very happy to have Peter fix our chimney. He even fixed a loose stone from our walk while he was at the house. I'll definitely call Peter again next spring when we need to have our brick porch mortar repaired.
Description of Work: Peter came out to repair our chimney from cracking mortar and this was causing bricks to come loose from the top. He also installed a chimney cap, and applied a sealant to the bricks.

Our house is held up by a brick chimney stack, brick column, and several steel columns. The mortar in the bottom foot of the brick column was crumbled and missing to a depth of more than half an inch. Peter removed the old mortar and replaced it with new mortar. He also touched up a more elaborate job he had done for us many years ago, which had cracked at the corners because of moisture. Finally, on his own initiative, Peter patched another area of the basement wall. At our request Peter was kind enough to remove the old mortar with hammer and chisel instead of a saw, eliminating a lot of dust and noise. The cleanup was very tidy. Peter also explained a couple of options we might have to deal with basement walls that are shedding plaster dust. Scheduling was excellent: less than 4 days after I first called, the job was estimated, scheduled, and completed. Peter is congenial, capable, and very pleasant to deal with. I would recommend him to anyone.

Why not phone to say you don't have time to do the job (or whatever other excuse he might have had) rather than just ignore a potential customer? Extremely frustrating, and unprofessional.
Description of Work: After many phone calls, Peter finally came to give an estimate for re-pointing bricks on front stairway. I also asked him about some masonry work in the basement. He took time to measure the potential job. I never heard back from him, even after making several additional follow-up phone calls.

Peter provided estimates for several projects at my home. I found him honest, personable and responsive. We decided to do one portion at a time and wanted to get the exterior of the foundation taken care of. Peter had no issues with this and was able to schedule us in quickly based on our needs. The work was to expecations and done quickly and cleanly. We'll be using him again for any mason needs in the future.

They do a very good painting. Their prices are middle than the high. They do a lot of extra work which they don't advertise. They are doing different work on different building for me and it's an on going work. I have never had any complaints about them. Some of the projects were painful because it was difficult schedule and the situations weren't perfect but they got the work done. I am impressed by them.

Just a data point for members. I called Peter based on reviews in AL and asked him to call back. He left a voice mail with two numbers to reach him, one of which was his home phone. We traded calls and finally talked today at which point he chided me for leaving messages on his home phone ... the very number he had given me (which a replay of his original voicemail confirmed). I pointed this out to him, no response. He then asked if the work needed to be done soon, and when I said not imminently, he stated he was booked through next Spring. I said then there was no need to talk anymore. End of call. Maybe he was annoyed that I pointed out his confusion as to phone #s, but I was not impressed. Just an FYI.

Response from Maguire Masonry
Dear Angie's List Members. I usually don't respond to negative posts, as I endevour to to my utmost best to satisfy my customers and sometimes this is just not possible ! However untruths can be very damaging to my reputation. In response to this post, I would like to state that I NEVER, EVER give out my home telephone number period !!! that is why I have 2 business numbers, my office and my cell phone. I'm amusing the member got my tel number from the book, then persisted to call me, also may I add at unreasonable hours. Again it is my assumption as to his rude and conceited manner on the telephone, that he had every right as a member of Angie's List to call me at home. This individual in my opinion was upset because he could not get an immediate response. I was upset and told him not to bother me at home. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Peter Maguire. Peter promptly returned my call requesting an estimate. I had gotten several other quotes and his was by far the most reasonable and he did not push the idea of completely replacing the steps as others did. He did the work right away and everything was neat and clean. He was professional and pleasant and I highly recommend him.

We had hired Maguire Masonry for repointing and basement waterproofing. We were pleased with how they did that job, so we asked them to tackle the chimney problem. As before, they were responsive and professional, and did excellent work. They also repaired a few places in our driveway wall which they noticed needed repair; they did not charge us for this extra work.
Description of Work: Our chimney was in severe need of help. Our house is about 90 years old, and the mortar between the bricks was rapidly disappearing. Maguire Masonry rebuilt the chimney and added a cap on top.

We were very pleased with the work. Peter was very responsive and professional. He understood our need to get the job done before we left for vacation, and worked hard to get it accomplished despite bad weather. Overall it was a very good experience. On the basis of this work, we hired Maguire Masonry to rebuild our chimney.
Description of Work: Maguire Masonry removed the old and loose mortar around our foundation and repointed it with a cement and lime mixture. They also removed flaking paint and eroding mortar from inside our basement, and waterproofed the walls, which involved several stages of applying different kinds of materials. They cleaned up the area and removed the debris.

Peter was prompt. He returned my phone calls even though we had trouble connecting. He provided an accurate quote, a start date - he even started early. He was on the job every day early and he and his team finished the work promptly. The job site was kept clean at the end of every day. Peter's work included the touches of a professional - he tinted the mortar on the foundation so that it blended with the original, added vapor barrier to the garage floor and included extra large rebar at the entrance of the garage, ensuring the floor would be long-lasting and stand up to heavy use.
Description of Work: The work included two projects. First, my 1936 home has a fieldstone foundation. The many of the stones were loose from the concrete becoming old a brittle - it was in need of repair. Second, my one car garage concrete floor was severly cracked with large portions of the concrete floor pushing up, pulling away from the walls. I needed the floor to be broken up, removed and new floor poured.

Peter Maquire was prompt in meeting with me to give recommendations on what needed to be done and the accompanying estimate. We signed a contract, and the work began and ended within two weeks. He started and finished on time and at the agreed price. He and his employee were pleasant and professional. Very clean and neat.
Description of Work: Refinishing of interior basement wall. My old cinder block foundation was deteriorating, I had gaps between blocks as well as water leaking in. We had a concrete walk coming from the street to the house, then continuing along the side of the house to the backyard. It was very poorly graded and was being pushed up by tree roots, such that we had a bad drainage problem and frequently got water in the basement along this side of the house. In addition our fieldstone foundation (house built in 1896) was in dire need of re-pointing. I could scrape the old mortar away with my finger, and in a few places there were entire stones missing. I got 3 estimates for this work, and Peter was a little higher than the others, although he did lower his price when I told him about the other offers. He gave a much more detailed and thorough description of his plan, and so we went with him as he seemed to really know how to tackle this large project. And boy am I glad we did. They were delayed by about 2 weeks in starting the project due to weather, but the timing didn't matter a whole lot to us. Peter and his two workers would show up around 7 or 7:30 every morning and work all day. They did an incredibly detailed job with the foundation, in some places removing all the mortar all the way into the inside of the basement around some of the stones. They replaced it with new mortar that they dyed to match the color of the stones. It looks great! I have already noticed a difference in the heat now that the weather is getting colder, the heat doesn't run so much any more. They also did a great job with the walkway. They had to wrestle with some very large tree roots to regrade the path. The bricks also turned out to be more expensive than he originally had thought, but he stuck to our agreed upon price for the job. The walk and patio look great and people compliment us all the time. Our drainage problem is completely fixed. Peter and his crew are very hardworking and excellent craftsmen. They cleaned up after themselves and left us with several bags of stone dust and detailed instructions on caring for our new walk and patio. I would hire him again in a second.
Description of Work: Demolished an old, poorly graded concrete walk and patio, regraded the underlying soil, then laid a new brick walkway and patio over the whole thing. Also did major re-pointing of our entire fieldstone foundation.

Peter promptly returned my initial call and was over a few days later to assess. Once I reviewed the proposal & we decided to proceed he told me which day he'd be over (weather permitting). It rained that morning and he called early to let me know he'd come instead the next day or the day after if it didn't rain. The next day was nice and they showed up as expected and on time. They were very friendly and courteous. We plan on considering the additional projects for a future date and I would recommend this company to everyone. It was a very positive experience and they did quality work in a timely fashion.
Description of Work: We had a leak in a part of our basement. Peter promptly returned my call and came over a few days later to assess the situation-he sent a proposal with a recommendation for masonry work around the base of the house and digging a trench in a side garden area & filling w/cement & sealer to stop leakage from the soil. He also recommended a couple of other optional projects regarding the base of the house under our porch and under our back deck.

Peter returned my call and made an appointment promptly. The day he was to come he called and asked if he could come earlier. That timing wasn't going to work, so we started discussing whether or not the weekend would work. But then I brought up the fact that the cement and pavers would need to be done in the next week or so since the cold weather is upon us. Some professionals have already told us it's too late and most say that we have at most a week or two more time to complete this. Otherwise we need to wait until Spring, because the cement and pavers won't set right. Peter said that he could do cement work when it was freezing, that it would be fine. I asked him what process he would use for the pavers. He answered that he was a stone mason and that he didn't understand my question. I tried to re-phrase a few different ways. I have been researching the various layers/materials that are ideally put down under the pavers, so I have been asking professionals what their process is. Their answers are varied and we want the ideal process done. No professional up to this point has wondered why I was asking what they materials they use. He told me that he has been a stone mason for 30 years and that he found this "insulting". I tried to clarify so that he understood my purpose in asking, but he did not let me. I suggested that he needed to think about how he responded to consumers and he said, "No, I talk to lots of people who are civil and mannerly." At this point I tried to even apologize if I offended him, and explain that I thought maybe he misunderstood my intent. He did not let me finish my sentences and I asked him to please let me finish. He said, "You've done enough of the talking." I realized that this conversation was not worth my time or energy because he was simply being combative and abusive. I hung up the phone confused and stunned. I chose to write my first negative report on Angie's List, because I think people should be informed.

I have filed at least ten reports this year on Angie's list contractors that I have used. This is the first negative report. My initial instinct was not to even bother especially since there are many positive reports. But my experience was valid. And I reminded myself that ALL experiences should be reported. Since, the job in question was a weather-sensitive job (i.e. cannot be done in winter), a failure on the part of the contractor to honor the contract at the last minute was especially troublesome. I met with and got bids from three masons. The exterior of the house was in CRITICAL need of re-pointing. All three masons had good reputations, all three bid prices were very similar. So my selection of Maguire Masonry was somewhat arbitrary. However, having received his bid, I notified Mr Maguire that I would hire him. I then notified the other two masonry companies that I had chosen another company. This was in early September. Several weeks later, Mr. Maguire said that he could not do the job. When I checked back with the other contractors, they were now booked up. With great effort and with limited options I found another mason. If a person fails to show up for an exam they get and F. Mr. Maguire gets an F. SUGGESTION: Maguire Masonry may be do an excellent job but I suggest you get several bids and if you choose Maguire get a signature ASAP
