HD = Huge Disappointment. The story is long....the process started in June 2011 and was finally completed six months later in December. HD was one of five contractors I interviewed for a conversion from electric to gas heat. During my research, I discovered that MassSave offers an interest free loan for this type of conversion as long as the furnace is 92% efficient. I sat with Josh and we discussed this. The first proposal he wrote included a 80% efficient furnance. I told him this wasn't going to qualify for the HEAT loan and he revised the proposal to include such equipment as a heat pump which would now make the system 92% efficient. Josh told me to fax in the revised proposal to MassSave and they would most likely authorize the loan based on this revision. I did and the HEAT loan was authorized. Josh told me that it was unnecessary to sign the new proposal and send it back to HD (red flag?). Shortly after, Josh left HD. I contacted Gary Lubas (VP) to confirm that the installation was still on schedule. He confirmed it was.The installers (Chris and Calvin - great!) came out the first week of August. They were professional and friendly. I was not comfortable with the electrician that was subcontracted to complete that piece of the job. I found him to be rude and arrogant. But, I let it go...believing that I had made a great decision to go with HD. (I found out later that the subcontractor never even pulled permits to complete the electrical work on my home). The installation went smoothly. The only hitch was that Calvin and Chris stayed until 7PM the last evening trying to program the thermostat. The only way they could get the heat to go on was to run the furnace in EMERGENCY mode. They told me that when Gary Woodruff returned from vacation, he would come out and program the thermostat. Gary did come out and programmed the thermostat. I found him to be rude and condescending. In early October, it was cold enough to turn the heat on. The only way the heat would come on was in EMERGENCY mode. This did not seem right to me so I called HD. Two service techs were sent out two days later. When they looked at the thermostat they both stated that they "had never seen this type before" and weren't sure how to proceed but they "would try." One of the first things they told me was that the wiring was incorrect. So they fixed that. Interesting...could my first impression of the electrician they used be correct (inept)? They spent about two hours working on this and couldn't get the heat to run in any mode but EMERGENCY. They told me that the next day they would have Bill (service mgr) call me to discuss. I called Bill the next day. I wasn't sure if he had my work number. He was surprised to hear from me and told me that he was not instructed to call me. So, I explained the situation with the EMERGENCY only heat and he said that the thermostat might be defective and he would look into it. The next day, we had the horrific October snowstorm and I had no power for a week. Once the power returned, I called HD and asked to speak to Bill. I was told he "no longer works for HD." Okay, so I started getting a little anxious at this point. I explained to Jessica (professional and understanding) the situation. She said she would send another service tech out to look at the thermostat. I asked her to please send someone who is familiar with this thermostat and she said she would send one of the best - Julian. He came out the next day. Julian is professional, polite and extremely knowledgeable. He confirmed that the thermostat was defective. He apologized and we scheduled for an installation of an even better thermostat the next Monday. I called HD that Friday and asked for assistance in filling out my rebate paperwork. According to MassSave, I was entitled to a $300 rebate. I was told immediately that I did not qualify for the rebate. After this call, I looked at the rebate paperwork and the second proposal. I compared the equipment from the proposal to the requirement on the rebate paperwork. Everything matched up and it looked like I qualified for the rebate, so I called HD back. The receptionist transferred me to Gary Woodruff. It was very obvious that he did not want to talk to me and immediately stated that I was not eligible for the rebate. I told him I had compared the rebate form and my proposal and I was certain I did qualify. He was pretty disgusted and told me to hold on while he went and got the paperwork so he could explain to me why I did not qualify. Gary started reading the proposal from my file...but, it turns out that it was the original proposal, not the revised one (remember, the one that Josh told me I didn't have to sign and return to HD?). Gary said he would look into this......the call back never came that day or the next or the next. So, I had that weekend to try to figure out what happened. What equipment was installed? The equipment from the first proposal or the second? On Monday, when Julian came out to install the new "nondefective" thermostat, I showed him the two proposals and asked him to confirm which equipment was installed. Well, you can imagine my stress level rising when he told me that the equipment installed in my house was from the first (old) proposal. And....the LED Oxyquantum (air purifier) that was on both proposals was NOT EVEN INSTALLED! I didn't know what to think. How could this have happened? Who made the mistake? Was this intentional on HD's part? Julian (being the professional that he is) assured me that all of this would be made right. The next morning, Julian and Gary Lubas (VP) called me to discuss. Gary reassured me that this was an honest mistake - that the revised proposal just did not make it into the file after Josh left. And, to make things right, he was going to give me a credit of $965 for the air purifier that did not get installed and secondly have Calvin and Chris come back out to remove the incorrect furnace and heat pump and install the correct ones. I thought about this for a few days and came to the decision that I wanted all of the correct equipment that was on the revised proposal - including the air purifier. I did not want the $965 credit. In fact, I wasn't comfortable with this entire situation anymore. I requested that Gary Lubas and Ward Woodruff (owner) come out to my house and meet with me face to face to further discuss this. Gary and Ward did come out the next week. I told them I wasn't going to judge their company on this huge mistake, but rather on how they were going to make it right. We came to a conscensus that the correct furnace, heat pump and air purifier would be installed. And, all were installed the next week. At my request, they came back out after the re-installation and performed an efficiency test which passed. Additionally, I asked them about the $300 rebate which they still insisted I was not eligible for and credited me for that amount. Finally, I requested and got a 3 year maintenance service schedule at no cost. I was starting to feel better. And, Gary Lubas arranged for removal of a gas heater I was now longer using. I appreciated that as well. The final step in obtaining the HEAT loan through MassSave, was to have one of their energy auditors come to the house and confirm that the equipment on the proposal matched what was installed. The auditor did confirm everything was correct, however, he could not determine if the heat pump was working correctly. I was told that the "lock out" would be at 40 degrees. This is the temperature at which the heat pump will not turn on and the gas furnace takes over. The temperature outside was 42 degrees that day and we turned on the heat - expecting to hear the heat pump go on. It did not. The auditor suggested I call HD and request a service tech to come out and confirm that the system was working properly. So...here we go again. At that point, I just chalked this whole experience up to insanity...borderline insanity. Absolutely ridiculous. The next day I emailed Gary Lubas and explained the situation. He copied me in on an email to the service area requesting that Julian come back out. Julian came out and I asked him if perhaps he needed to reprogram the thermostat because the furnance and heat pump had been replaced with larger models. That's right...it was MY idea. Mind you, I have NO HVAC experience, but I was the one who had to suggest this. Julian reprogrammed the thermostat and the heat pump works when it is supposed to. It is amazing to me that no one from HD has ever called me back to follow up and make sure everything is working smoothly and that I am satisifed. To summarize, I'm not sure what went wrong here. I really thought I had done my due diligence and picked HD as the absolute best HVAC contractor. My experience with them was just one frustrating and at times -insane mistake after another. There are two things that stick out after this installation, I am appalled at their lack of customer service and the impression that they just don't care. For any potential customers thinking about using HD for an installation or conversion, my words of advice are WATCH THEM CAREFULLY. Make sure you get the right equipment - the FIRST time. I can't speak about their other services - maintenance and repair. It seems that customers are satisfied for the most part in those areas. We'll see how my first scheduled maintenance goes later this year....
Description of Work: I contracted for a conversion from electric heat to a gas furnace with heat pump. This job also included the installation of ductwork.

Thank you for the feedback on the situation. Your account of the events surrounding your installation are very accurate. Our Comfort Advisor, Josh, left our employment after your job was booked and before it was installed. This should not have been a challange. It became a problem because he made a change in the equipment and did not update the job file. Were this the only imperfection in your job it would still have been a major grievance causing frustration and inconvenience for you and a major expense correcting the situation on our part. Unfortunately we had other challanges that you have detailed fairly well and accurately in your report. For this reason I won't address them individually. I will not make excuses. The fact of the matter is that a combination of Josh making changes that were not entered properly, our installers and office failing to identify that we needed to make a return trip after the installation, and a defective thermostat caused you a severe inconvenience and for us to look extremely unprofessional. Since your installation we have implemented an expanded installation check list so that we can identify work that was not done and verify that nothing was missed during start up, which as you experienced during your installation can come at the end of a very long day. The new expanded check list also includes a carbon copy to leave with the system so that any technician that arrives for follow up work will have information on the installation and start up. I am also glad that you have accepted the 3 year service club membership that we extended to you free of charge. We will work hard during that time to regain your confidence. I believe that that we have corrected all of the concerns that you have had. We do stand behind our work and will do whatever it takes to ensure that the system is operating properly and that you are happy. I would like to reiterate how grateful I am to have this account of the events surrounding your installation. In addition to the extensive check list that we have implemented, you have given me a number of other ideas that I will put in place to help us avoid causing frustrations for our clients.

It went very well. The technician took the time to explain what he was doing and why he was doing it to my husband. He did tell my husband that the repair would take time.
Description of Work: We had scheduled Hurley and David to add a valve to our garage heating unit. While the technician was doing so he noticed that part of our heating system had been installed backwards. He fixed it but it did involve quite a bit of time. I was a little overwhelmed by the bill. Hopefully, we will notice a major improvement in our heat this winter.

The rep was great. It fell apart after he left.
Description of Work: Hurley David came to our home to quote us on a new heating system. We discussed a rather involved Hydronic system that would require a boiler and forced hot air. We were interested in this system because we did not want to scrap our new indirect fired water heater but also wanted to add central air. The rep spent about two hours measuring and discussing the system. We never got a quote. When I called them about it we were told someone would call us back but we never heard from them again. I was surprised because this would been an expensive system and I would imagine it would have had great margins.

Good Morning, Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We can't improve unless we know where to focus. One of our goals is to deliver proposals in person, often at our first meeting. When we realized that the job would need further review in the office we should have set up a follow up appointment to come out and allow you to choose any options that you would like and deliver a proposal. We know that it is frustrating waiting around for contractors to send out bids. In this instance we fell short in getting you a proposal in a timely fashion and I humbly apologize for our mistake. Again thank you for your feedback on this matter. This will be our first topic in our next training meeting. If you need anything please do not hesitate to call and ask for me personally. Thank you. We thought we had the stale air resolved, because Gary, the son’s owner, came out and inspected the house. They then said they couldn’t put this energy efficiency system in the house because there wasn’t enough room. I called Gary and he apologized about the situation, but didn’t do anything about it. They made promises they couldn’t keep and didn’t do anything to try to fix the situation, instead they just refunded my deposit, but they kept the money for everything else. They made a mistake and I’m the one who suffered for it.
Description of Work: They are an HVAC company. We purchased a humidifier, an air cleaner/filter, ultra lighting, and the other items needed for an energy efficiency system. They exclusively sell the ultra violet light and the replacement filters.

Thank you for your report on our services. As you mentioned in your report we were unable to install an outdoor air intake to deliver additional ventilation to your home. We could not install the intake in the location that you desired because we would have had the modify the framing of your home in a way that would have weakened it and violated building code. When we discovered that we were unable to locate the intake in the location that you desired we sent our construction manager to your home to provide a solution. He did provide an alternate location. You rejected that location and we refunded 100% of the amount that you had put toward this project. I deeply regret attempting to install this air intake. We have not refunded the amount that you invested in the Humidifier, Air Cleaner, and Ultraviolet light because those items were installed and are operational. If those items are not performing at a level that meets your needs please let me know and we will be happy to remove them and refund 100% of your original investment. We work hard at Hurley and David to provide the best service and meet or exceed all expectations (a read through our Angie's List reports will show that). We are human though and from time to time we will make a mistake. In that event Hurley and David should be the only party that suffers. This is the reason that we make a 100% satisfaction 100% money back guarantee on every system that we install. If the items that we have installed are not meeting your needs please let me know and I will be happy to remove them and refund your investment in full.

I felt that it went very well. We were also able to reduce our $360.00 cost by using the $25.00 coupon that came with joining Angie's list. We will let Angie's list know the results of how the Service Club membership in 2012.
Description of Work: On Friday 8/12/2011 I noticed that I had water in my mechanical room. I mopped it up and then remembered seeing a recent ad for Angie"s List so I looked up Angie's List. I decided to join after I called their 1 888 number. Angie's List emailed me a list of their service hero's and Hurley and David was one of those five. I contacted them. They were able to schedule me for an appointment on Mon 8/15/2011. Julian R, their representative did an excellent job. He was meticulous and very thorough. He answered our questions and explained what he was doing. He also did a great job of upselling and consequently we purchased the Service Club membership from Hurley and David.

They were very responsive and punctual, arriving in the first 15 minutes of the time frame given. The technician was very knowledgeable and straight forward. Outside of the original issue the tech took a look at my system to see if there was need for any other improvements and found that we have a system that requires only a 6 month filter change that we can do ourselves. Given that I am a new homeowner and not familiar with the equipment I was very happy with the outcome.

I had wonderful confidence and they are wonderful people. They fixed something that I had been struggling with for 2 or 3 years with trying to get someone in here that knew what they were doing. These people know what they were doing and everything works perfectly now. I'm very, very pleased with them. The price was good and I was very pleased with the price. I signed up for a service plan with them. It was like my father always told me if I found a good mechanic to marry them. They were exceptional. Two different service techs came and both of them knew exactly what they were doing. It didn't work the first time and they came back and didn't charge me for any subsequent visits. They said they would just keep coming until it was fixed, which I was very happy about. They stuck with it and it has been working perfectly. Their price was good and it was comparable to other people that have come here. I was happy with it.

I called and asked to have a technician look at our furnace as it was making noises that didn't sound healthy. I was booked for the next morning and technician came within the first 30 minutes of the 2 hour spread I was given. He diagnosed the problem as a bearing and bushing issue. He could replace the motor for $696, but the age of the furnace (18 yrs) meant that other issues were probably going to be cropping up. Also, the efficiency of the unit was low. After a day of thinking about it I called to get an estimate for a new system. Josh came up that night and measured the house and looked at our system. After asking questions about how we live, he put a plan together for us. He suggested we also change our AC unit as it was the same age as the furnace and was also inefficient. Replacing them both at the same time gave us a bigger savings. His price was within the target range I was looking at. After another day of considering fixing or replacing, I decided to replace. I was given a date for the following week. Technicians came out on time and were very professional. They cleaned up before leaving. I discovered a small leak in one of my pipes last night. I called this AM and was told they could have someone at my house this afternoon. As I can't be there, we settled for tomorrow AM. All in all, I am very happy with the customer service and the unit. I am a bit concerned about the humidifier that was installed on the furnace, but will discuss with technician in the AM. I am confident that he will be able to help me with my questions. Lastly, I am eligible for two rebates from NE Utilities and Gas Co. Hurley & David attached the completed applications for both to my invoice. All I have to do is sign and send off. I spent no time researching rebates!

I used them based on the recommendations from Angie's List. I have been over satisfied with them. They were prompt. They came at two separate times and both the times they gave me 2 hour morning schedule. I was happy with that and didn't have to wait all day. It took a while for them to solve the problem, but they were very thorough when they found the problems. Their price was fair compared to the others in the area. I am happy with the quality of their work. They were very professional. They had sent out one technician and he wasn't sure of the problem so I had another technician come out to check. They were pretty thorough and cost effective for him and me.

They did great. Gary Woodruff was the heating specialist we dealt with for the quote and who advised us what work should be performed. He was very professional and knowledgeable. The furnace work was pretty much completed in one day. they were very neat and professional. The baseboard replacement was a very difficult job due to the work done by the original homeowner. It took a couple of days, but the work turned out very well it works and looks great. Mike the gentlemen who did the installation work was very professional, neat and courteous. we are very happy with the overall results and would definitely recommend them and are planning to use them again when we have central air conditioning installed this spring.
Description of Work: Hurley and David removed our old oil fired boiler and installed a high efficiency gas boiler with a passive hot water tank. They also removed the old base board heating units on the second floor of the house which were very short (all 3 feet long). They replaced them with more appropriate (4 and 8 foot) units.

Since this is a purchase that I MAY do once or twice in my life, I really did not have a handle on the who, what or where of getting the right system. We had four other contractors bid on this system. The saleperson Josh came out to assess the house for the job and submit a quote. We asked for a follow up and he came with the installation manager and they clarified the installation process and the logistics of what went where. The quoted price seemed a bit high and the equipment was a lesser known brand, BUT, I had read that the installation was the most important part of the puchase (Consumer reports, etc.) and after weighing the pros and cons, we went with Hurley and David. The installation was originally to take two days, but the techincians were right on time, worked their butts off and finished up by early evening. This was appreciated as that was one less day we had to miss work to be at home. Every person involved was polite and pleqasant. Since the system was installed late in the heating season, we had little time to evaluate it before the colloing season began.(although, our gas bills this summer have been 25% less, due to no pilot light on the new system) The air-conditioning was a God-send and even with this summer being warmer than last year, our electric bill was 17-18% less. And that was for all the time air as oppossed to on-off window units. In addtion, I think the warranty on the equipment is first rate, with Hurley & David going beyong the manufacturers warranty. All in all this was a pleasant and productive experience for us and we have no problems refering H&D to others.
Description of Work: Replaced gas-fired hot-air furnace. Also installed Central Air Conditioning, an air-cleaner system, humidifier and CO detectors.

Thank you very much for your kind words. We all strive every day to perform the highest quality workmanship and service. I am delighted to hear about the reduction in your energy bills as this is the real fruit of all of our efforts to ensure the best installation that complies with codes and manufacturers instructions. Small shortcuts on the installation of a furnace or air conditioner can lead to big decreases in the operating efficiency of a new system. We look forward to looking after your new system for many years to come. Sincerely, Gary T. Woodruff

Gary and his team did a great job! ....we had gotten three quotes,...but onlty two would qualify for the tax credit.....and the carrier system wouldn't work in our situation. But Hurley has a great reputation.....
Description of Work: We had contracted Hurley and David to replace the gas furnace and install central air. The ductwork was already in place and they matched up a perfect system. They had a special and with the tax credit, it was a win-win. I looked up the Goodman line of AC compressors on Consumer Reports and it rated with all the other units out there...and it has a 10 year warrenty on parts and with Hurley's 10 year labor warrenty, I was sold......its only been a month and we are very happy.......

We got quotes from 2 different companies. We went with Hurley & David only because the heater they offered was more in our price range and ranked #3 per the American Homebuilders Assn. versus #1, which the other company offered. Hurley and David were quick and professional in getting us a quote and at least as fast and professional in having the heater installed. They said they would show up at 8:00am and did. They said it would take approx 6 hours and it did. That included cleaning up after their work. After the installers left, another gentleman arrived to review the work of the installers and address any outstanding issue. We were not expecting that, but pleased. We are expecting H&D to send us rebate coupouns from Baystate Gas and from the local electric compan because we purchased a high-efficiency model. They also told us our first annual inspection would be free. Hurley & David went above and beyond in terms of what they provided for the cost of the project. And, considering our prior heater was 40 years old, the difference was immediate.
Description of Work: Replaced an old gas furnace and programmable thermostat with new ones.
