E.F. Winslow Plumbing & Heating

First let me say that we've used EF Winslow ever since moving to the Cape 13 years ago for our boiler service and maintenance. Until this last encounter we were always happy with the service. They showed up on time, the cost was competitive and in general the service was done correctly, although as in any such business it all depends on which tech you end up with. Approximately 3 weeks ago I put in a request through their online form to have my 18 year old water heater replaced. At the time it was still OK but I was concerned about the age. Got a call from the office quickly (the next day I think). We had a brief discussion and they promised to get back to me with an estimate, which they did. However the estimate was for the wrong type of water heater. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and will assume I didn't clearly describe my installation. I explained exactly what was needed (including the model number of my current heater) and again they promised to get back to me. This never happened. Perhaps I should have followed up but that is their job not mine. At any rate I let it slide until somewhere around March 20 or 21st. By now of course the tank started to leak! I then put in another request for the estimate reminding them that they never got back to me, been a customer for years, can take my business elsewhere, etc. I was a little snarky but not that bad really. I immediately got an email from Andrea (on a weekend day as a matter of fact) that they were very sorry and they would have the parts department on it first thing on Monday. I'm thinking that this is great, we'll have a new water heater in no time. Sure enough Monday morning I get the estimate by email from Andrea for a new Ruud water heater with a labor "guesstimate" but no idea what model and the price seemed really high for a basic 40 gal water heater. I asked what model they were proposing to use. The response was a Ruud P40S-2. That is the model number of the existing one! I had given them the model number when this all started. At this point I called Andrea and told her that that was the model number of the old unit which is not available any longer. "Hmmmmmm, I'll give this to Patrick in the parts department" That was the last I heard from them and that is the last time they'll hear from me. I think I should be allowed to have all the information I need to make an informed decision - it is my money after all.

I wasn't real happy with there service. They were extremely expensive. Way more than there initial estimate. They did the work okay. The guy was here for about 20 minutes to a half an hour and originally he had given me a verbal estimate on what the labor was going to be and as it turned out it was more than double what was indicated.

So I was very grateful. I mention EF Winslow anytime I talk to people, I think they are terrific. I am very satisfied with the company. I have used them for electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and I am very happy with everybody that works with EF Winslow; it is a terrific company. I have recommended him to my brother and he is using them at his house also and the guy across the street from me is using them, so I have been referring people to EF Winslow. I like the fact that they handled electrical, plumbing, it was all the things that I was interested in so I guess a friend of mine had mentioned them to me but that is the reason I wanted them because they handle different sorts of things. Anything they do is good with me. Their scheduling is just fine; everything is wonderful.

The experience turned out very good. They did a good job. I was very happy. They did good service. The person who did the service was very cordial, and there was something that they said I could do myself, and showed me how to do it, so I thought they were pretty reasonable, and they did good service. I would recommend them.

Went great from step 1. From their assessment visit through return visits post-installation to answer my questions. They told us what we needed to do. They came when they said they would. Did what they promised. ?What more could you possibly want?

They came quickly, which is good, because who wants to go without hot water? But the plumber they sent was not familiar with the type of hot water heater we had bought, which was a new high efficiency one. He also put hours of work into piping for a pump. We did not pay for that, because we had gravity flow that would take care of the condensation the pump was designed to remove. They were going to charge us for a pump and piping which was not necessary. My husband called a supervisor over, and it was convirmed that the gravity tube to our waste pipe system was more than sufficient, and the pump was not necessary. Supposedly, they took those hours off our bill, but it still came in at about $1030, which did include some minor wiring. Very expensive for the installation of a water heater that we provided (bought new from Sears). But, you gotta have hot water! They were available! Earlier in the year, we had them re-plumb our entire house, replacing the copper pipes, which were thirty years old and pin-hole leaking all over the place. They did a good job with that, except they put a smaller diameter pipe out to our exterior faucets, which caused a drop in pressure for our garden hoses this summer. We could not run the same number of sprinklers that we had run the summer before. In fact, could only run two sprinklers at once, due to drop in the diameter size of that water pipe. That should not have happened. Otherwise, a good job. They sent a half dozen guys at once over here to do the job in one day, during a snow storm in February 2014. So it was done quickly, maybe to quickly. I've paid a lot to E. F. Winslow in the year 2014, and I would use them again. They do pull the permits from the town for their work, and it always passes inspection. Just pricey, and you should watch them- as we learned with our water heater installation. Good luck! On time, on budget, verified everything was working. Everyone professional, cleaned up before departing. Overall A rating.

It doesn't matter as I have renters in the house and must pay the enormous fee they charge if I want to make my renters happy, which I do. but after this, i will no longer use them.

All their service people are very knowledgeable and polite. I would recommend them to anybody. I haven't gotten much of any information on competitors. As far as I know, the price was probably the same as everybody else, average.

The Carpenter voided in my toilet, left the seat up and did not flush. I have no idea what he left on my towel on the towel rack. They left a mess expecting some one else to clean up. Some workers were gracious others atrocious. One gentleman stated "I could be in Osterville". Obviously Brewster is below him. I had a tub replaced for 6K and the popup stopper was useless. When they sent someone to replace this he blamed it on my oil baths. I drove to NE plumbing and they replaced it for free. VERY SAD. Shame on you.

We've been using them for about eight years and they are very good. They are very reliable. We usually call them and tell them we are coming down. They will open the house and they have a contact who calls us. We set the meeting between 10 and 12 then the contact person is there. We never had any problem with them. I will recommend them to others. They do very good work and they are very dependable.

Before the appointment time came, I discovered what was wrong with the water heater and fixed it myself. I called Winslow Plumbing and Heating to cancel the appointment. During the call to make the appointment and the appointment to break the appointment I was treated with professionalism and cortesy. For that reason, I would call them again if I needed their services.

Responded in a reasonable amount of time. Phones are answered by a real person day or night. Price was more than reasonable.

Service man spent time looking for information about how to service our unit. It is a newer type of high efficiency gas boiler.

Product was great for saltwater exposure. Quoted price was O.K. -- not great, but fair. The problems started from there, unfortunately. I was quoted for one propane tank, which I later realized would run out after about 1.5 days in an outage. Negotiated for one 100 gal. tank and one 50 gal. tank. Then everything fell through as the person who was supposed to be on top of my project disappeared (vacation?). But nobody filled the gap. The local propane supplier then came out and informed me that having two unequal tanks would not work. I needed two 100 gal. tanks (I believe that these are nominally 120 gals. but they are never filled to that.) Then my generator was installed on the prepared surface, and piping done to the house, BUT, the person digging the trenches left everything wide open, he was very rude -- a potential tragedy for my two small dogs. At that point, I started dealing with the younger E.F. Winslow, who, to his credit, worked very hard to be responsive. Unfortunately, the dropped communications meant that I was billed directly by the local propane supplier on my credit card. This turned out to be a disagreement between myself and the E.F.Winslow company about who owed what. I finally let it go with their computation, with which I strongly disagreed, because they are the only people around who can service this machine, so I need them for the future. The bottom line, we had a power outage this winter and it worked perfectly. My final conclusion: you do NOT want a Generac generator, the line having been cheapened to make them competitive. Hopefully, I am the only customer E.F. Winslow ever had, or will have, with such a horrendous concatenation of errors!

First, a live person answers the phone. Second, they make an appointment and show up when they say they will. Third, they do the job well. The price is a little high but worth the price for the convenience.

I had a 2 hour appointment window and about 20 minutes before they showed I got call from the service tech that he was on the way and he did arrive well within the appointment window. After completing the servicing, he advised me how the system should be run when have high outside temps and high humidity to get best results. I was advised not to spent any money checking for leaks as had been several years since system was previously serviced and would not be worth the money to search for a tiny leak somewhere. There were no travel charges and labor charge was only for 1/2 hour even though total time spent at the house was closer to 1 hour. System has been able to cool much better since the servicing. Would definitely use them again. Tech was very professional and very friendly and he explained what he was doing to me and why. They take charge cards so did not need cash and price charged seemed reasonable.
