When I first called to explain the work I needed, Jim asked me to send him the information in an email. I was wrong in thinking it might be a brush-off, because he called first thing the next morning and came out to give estimate the same day. The urgent part of the 2-day project was completed the following day, with completion the next week. Both Jimmy and his assistant were professional and pleasant. I will definitely hire JDO Electric again.

After performing the whole-house inspection, JDO owner, Jim DeOliveira, presented a list of the items that he found to be problematic and that should be addressed for safety and fire prevention. These items included installation of hard-wired smoke detectors in front and back common halls of a 3-story 2-family home; all smoke detectors and CO2 detectors were replaced in 2nd flr unit; 3 bad outlets in 2nd flr apt were replaced; installed light in basement to better illuminate panels; corrected feed that was improperly installed. Work was performed over a couple of days and areas where work was done were left clean. Jim and his technician worked quickly and efficiently and were cordial but professional. One project that was identified during inspection but has been deferred is installation of GFI outlets throughout the basement. I plan to make arrangements with JDO to complete this project.
Description of Work: Big Deal: $165 whole-house inspection including smoke alarms, electrical panels, main breakers, circuit breakers, GFIs, ARC fault breakers, electrical wire insulation and grounding system. Followed up with resolution of problems identified during inspection.

Jim was 1st contact to my request for electrical services. Arrived on time (weekend), very professional, brought many great tips ideas forward during his walk through. Jim's estimate came very quickly, his pricing was on point with other electricians and his advice very helpful. I selected another very similar provider due to 'local' business as my final deciding point. Highly recommend Jim to anyone looking for an electrician.

He came to the house, checked both of my fuse boxes and tightened all the screws in them. He discovered one fuse that looked fine that was not functioning and replaced it. He discovered one stuck circuit breaker, got it unstuck, and taught me how to unstick a circuit breaker. He checked out my doorbell problem and discovered that the problem was in the doorbell button, and replaced the button. He did a wonderful job quickly. I would definitely use JDO again.

Jim and his assistant showed up right on time and got right to work. Our condo association's common area smoke detectors had gone off randomly, etc. They blew the dust out of them, replaced batteries and tested them all (approx 12 total). They were very down to earth and personable, and did a quick and neat job. Very highly recommended.

Our dining room light came crashing down on the dining table and left a broken light bulb and no idea what the wiring might be like in this old house. We ordered a new light right off of home depot and needed somebody to put it in for us. He took down the light and there were old wires and lots of fraying underneath. Jim was able to come in with his assistant and get the job done cleanly for $200. I would highly recommend him.

Jim and his coworker Chico were very professional. They showed up when they said they would and I felt that they were really looking out for my best interest. Although JDO gave me the highest estimate (of three), I chose JDO because they were MUCH more responsive, seemed to know the business better and I had used JDO once before for a small job and was happy with the result. I doubt the other two providers would have done the work at the price origianlly quoted. Jim returned phone calls immediately. I bought a defective bathroom light at Home Depot. Jim removed the defective light and put up a new one at no extra charge. He also made some really good suggestions about changing out plugs for air conditioners so that they had their own dedicated lines.

An electricians licence covers house and building electrical work, not appliance repair. I can't believe I got this review from the customer. We replaced a circuit breaker panel board and 1 bad plug. She was very happy with our work and our ability to accomodate her schedule. She mentions to us that her stove and hood vent is not working properly. I tell her that this is a job for an appliance repair person and I reccomend one for her. She insists I try to look at it anyway, So to please her I open up the vent hood, and range, and poke around for electrical issues. Both appliances work but digital displays on stove, and micro switches on vent hood dont seam to work and this type of repair is not the work of an electritian, its an appliance repair persons job. I dont even know were to get the parts. she needs to call a place like sears home appliance repair or the appliance company I recomended. At this point she was more understanding of here situation and was satisfied. A few weeks later this is the review she gives me. . Im Amazed.

I had purchased a new dining room light chandelier for my new home and was planning on wiring it and hanging it myself until I learned that a couple of the light fixtures in my home were not up to code and contained very old wiring. Since this was my first attempt at electrical, I decided to leave it to the professionals. I called around to a few places before landing on JDO; everybody seemed to be booked solid. When I called Jim, he had an opening the same day so I jumped on it. He arrived on time with one of his guys and they immediately went to work. They took great care in making sure that everything stayed clean while performing their work. The old fixture was out no problem and the new electrical box went in with ease. The only snag was that the ceiling needed to be cut away just slightly to accommodate the removal of the old and new box. Fortunately Jim was prepared with a small bucket of plaster repair and patched everything up as good as new - looks even better after some ceiling paint touch up. The new chandelier was up in literally seconds once the electrical box was secured and wired. Jim and his employee were very friendly, knowledgeable, respectful, and took great care in their work. We are very happy with the outcome and will definitely use JDO again.

Jim did a great job. Our system was about 25 years old and not functioning. He did the research to determine what system would work with our wiring, which was not updated. He replaced four speakers, the master station, and the exterior unit which included the doorbell. He was clear with us from the beginning with regard to what needed to be done. Because the new units were smaller than the old ones he had to find a way to cover the extra empty space. Thankfully he was able to take care of it so that we did not need to have painting, or wall repair done. We are very pleased with Jim's work and strongly recommend him.

My house was built in 1967 and still had the original fuse panel. During the recent heat wave, the fuse circuits that supply the central air conditioning were irreversibly damaged. We had power in the house, and a working window a/c but no power to the central a/c. I called Jim on Friday morning. Jim said he would try to come for a look that afternoon, between jobs, but in any case would come by Saturday morning at the latest. (Another provider indicated that he might be able to come on Friday, but if not, the next opportunity would be Monday and I decided not to wait. ) Late on Friday afternoon, Jim called to say he was stuck in gridlock traffic, and rescheduled for early Saturday morning. He called to reconfirm on Saturday morning and arrived as promised. Jim confirmed that the fuse panel was irreversibly damaged. We decided to replace the 100 amp fuse panel with a circuit breaker panel that could accommodate 200 amp service, but initially set up for the existing 100 amp service. (200 amp service would require installing a new underground supply line from the street. We expected to schedule this work in a few weeks.) Jim arrived with an assistant as scheduled on the following Tuesday, and installed the new circuit breaker panel. The original fuse panel had been creatively rewired over the decades, to accommodate central a/c and a major addition. Jim and his assistant unwound this complexity, so that each outgoing wire had its own circuit breaker, appropriately rated for the wire size. JIm also measured the actual current draw by the central a/c, to determine the appropriate circuit breaker rating, and confirmed the integrity of the wiring and connections to the a/c compressor. We were ready to schedule the service upgrade to 200 amps, but Jim said he could only account for 65 amps of demand, and there is no need to upgrade the service to 200 amps unless the 100 amp main breaker opens frequently. (The 100 amp main fuse had never blown). Jim impressed me because he is very practical, yet highly professional - very attentive to safety and code compliance. He was timely and responsive, and the price was reasonable. I was ready to schedule additional work, but he explained that it was unnecessary.

They did the work. About half of the job was done by his employee. The electrical inspector and the power company both had to do work as the job went along, so it took a while. My big complaint was in the quality of the wiring of the loadcenter. It wasn't wired cleanly or with thought to future work. The wires were unnecessarily tangled. They ran multiple cables through single punchouts even though there were spare punchouts available. They twisted together 9 unrelated grounds and put them under a single screw. This was against code, and I don't know how it got past the inspector. I made them fix this, at least. Over all, the service drop and meter base seem fine, but I was not happy with their other work. --- I just had a chat with Jim at JDO. He argued a couple points. I still don't think that the work was high quality. I went down to take a look again: 1. IRC E3406.9: "Terminals for more than one conductor and terminals for connecting aluminum conductors shall be identified for the application." Jim argued that placing nine ground wires into a single lug met code. Looking at the loadcenter cut sheet, none of the larger lugs are intended for use with multiple wires. The smaller terminals allow up to three at the wire gauge used. 1. IRC Table E3802.1 : "Flat cables shall not be stapled on edge." Right next to the loadcenter, there are two new pieces of Romex installed together on edge. 2. It's not code, but staples generally are only intended for up to two pieces of Romex. Right next to the loadcenter, there are three pieces of Romex under one staple. It's a little thing, but... 4. Unnecessary tangling. The ground conductors are still wrapped together, and some have been installed in groups of two or three. There are 48 open ground terminals with screws backed out by the manufacturer for quick installation. The only reason for grouping grounds under the screws is laziness. And I see no good reason for twisting unrelated grounds. Most of the wiring through the house needs to be redone. The new service was just a start. Almost every circuit is going to be touched, and having cables tangled in advance is just making trouble. Jim mentioned the difficulty of neatly reusing existing cables when replacing the load center. I would say that they ran new romex for 2/3 of the cables going into the box, and these are the cables that are most tangled. If anything, upon looking harder, my assessment of the quality of the work in the loadcenter has gone down. My review stands. The quality was not up to my standards, and I view quality as the most important part of the job.

The work in this service was done 50% by myself and 50% by my employee which I supervised. All the work was permitted and inspected by the town inspectors and Nstar Power Company inspectors and was found to be 100% safe and complying with code. The homeowner’s main complaint was that wires inside the panel board weren’t very neat and several grounds were under one lug. Typically this is ok however we did remove this per his request to satisfy him. Trying to reconnect old and short branch circuit wires into a large 200 amp panel is not an easy task and because of the shortness of these wires it makes it difficult to keep it as neat as I normally would like. All wires were connected properly, safe, and to code. I always try to do my work to the best of my ability and make it safe and comply with codes at all times. You may continue reading my reviews, and you will find over 100 'A' ratings of which several of them are service upgrades. Thanks You, Jim.

I called Jim on a Friday evening after I lost power in a section of my kitchen. He came first thing on Saturday morning and got my power up and running and explained to me what the problems were and that the boxes and wiring would have to be replaced and upgraded or I would continue to have this problem. He told me he would get an estimate for the work he needed to perform and get back to me. Jim called on Sunday and gave me the estimate, which was right in the range I had expected. He and his associate arrived first thing on Monday morning and in blazing heat they did exactly what he explained needed to be done, they were very pleasant, professional and neat. He even took time to repair a broken lightbulb box in my basement as well. I would recommend Jim and would certainly call again for any electrical work in the future.

All of Jim's work was great. He was very professional and he and his assistant are very hard working. We were always able to get in contact with him easily and he always showed up on time and did the work he had promised to do. Since we had so many things for him to do, I gave him our spare set of keys because neither I or my husband could take that much time off of work. I was sort of reluctant to give someone keys that I had only met once but Jim was very responsible and trustworthy. He always locked everything up tightly when he left and he also cleaned up well before he left. When we had him over to give an estimate, it was Jim who pointed out the danger of how our ceiling fans were installed and he was great to take up that task first as we needed those to work in the hot weather.. He also was the one to point out that our circuit box really needed to be replaced. It was definitely quite old so we weren't too surprised! Also, Jim always stuck to the estimates he had given us at the beginning of his work. I would highly recommend JDO Electric to anyone looking for an electrician!

Called JDO to come investigate a circuit breaker problem. He said he'd be in my area the next day and would be able to fit me in at some point. I gave him my cell phone number and he said he'd call about an hour before he could make it. At 4pm, I called him to ask if he was coming. Unsurprisingly at that point, he said he wasn't and he had lost my phone number and couldn't call me back (sounded a lot like the dog ate my homework excuse). I understand he was squeezing me in and things happen, but all it would take is a simple phone call to tell me he couldn't make it. I can't quite give JDO an F though -- he did answer the phone both times I called, which when it comes to electricians, seems to be a nearly impossible thing to do.

I believe there was a communication error between the customer and I. When (Member name removed) called I told him I was busy but I was going to be in his neighborhood that day and If I could squeeze him in at the end of the day I would call him an hour ahead of time. I never made an guaranty that I would be able to fit him in. Unfortunately I could not find time to go there because I was still busy on the job I was on. When he called me at the end of the day I informed him of this and he seemed understanding , but later he places this review on my angie's list web site. As you can see by 99% of my reviews I take pride in my business and I always try to be fair with my customers and want to make all of them life long customers. I hope this report does not change anyone's decision on calling me. Thank You Jim deOliveira
