Description of Work: Responded quickly. Problem: Smoke detectors were faulty in new condo (renovated two family made into two condos). Alarms would go off for no reason, sometimes multiple times a day and fire dept was called. Fix: James and his assistant Alex did a great job. James told me the builder had installed detectors that had been recalled due to poor design/wiring. James tested to see which ones were for my unit and replaced all detectors.

Description of Work: Jimmy replaced all of my smoke detectors. When he heard that I had an issue, he asked if he could come over immediately to ensure that everyone was safe and that it was not going to put anyone in danger. We then invited him back 3 days later to replace the whole system. Really knowledgeable and easy to work with.

Description of Work: Jim responded promptly and came on a Saturday. I wanted to repair my sink disposal, replace a defective smoke alarm unit, and install a new power outlet. Jim had me sign that I would pay $150 for the first 2 jobs. After I did, he restarted the disposal which had jammed, taught me how to do it myself (about 10 min) and wired the smoke alarm unit (another 10 min). He could not do the power outlet but gave me a quote that persuaded me not to do it. Overall, he finished the first 2 jobs. But - signing to pay $150 for work that turns out to take 20 minutes? For me that was an expensive lesson on how disposals work. And what happened with the idea that we create value first and then charge money?

Description of Work: I had just bought a home and one of the rooms lost power. We had been trying to switch out the plug plates. The electrical box said to call JDO Electric and he was so rude. He said that we shouldn't have tried to switch the plug plates because we weren't licensed to and we learned the hard way. He said the earliest he can come by was in 5 days. Days went by and didn't hear from him. We had emailed him and nothing. I ended up calling another electrician and he fixed it in less than 15 mins.

Description of Work: They checked our existing hard wired fire alarms and found them to not be working. They replaced them and some carbon monoxide detectors, placing all of them strategically so that we would be in compliance with codes. They also replaced a ceiling light fixture with the new one we had purchased. They talked through options for the detectors with us and let us decide how to proceed when we understood each. The jobs made a bit of plaster dust but they cleaned it up pretty well. I do not recall how much we paid but the price was competitive with other electricians. They were prompt and efficient in all of their dealings with us.

+ -1 moreCalled JDO when we wouldn't figure out why the circuit didn't appear to be tripped. They said they would be there in half an hour and showed up a little early. Figured out the problem in 10 minutes, but also showed us how to check for the same thing in the future. Very professional and prompt. A little pricey, but it was an emergency call, so I don't think it was unfair.
Description of Work: We appeared to blow a circuit in our kitchen, but the circuit breaker didn't appear to be off. Turned out that there was a reset button on a separate outlet that had tripped.

+ -1 moreSeveral electrical circuits in our house were not working. We believed the problem was related to our breaker box which had had water damage roughly 2 years earlier. The problem became worse over a few days, but finally, on a Saturday morning our kitchen circuit was out, including the refrigerator. I found Jim through Angie's List. He answered his cell phone and agreed to come over in around 2 hours, which he did. Needless to say, we were grateful to get such quick service on a Saturday. He did the most urgent work, which restored our power for the weekend. He explained what he was about to do clearly and gave us an estimate for a second stage of work (replacing all breaker switches). He and a co-worker returned as agreed (on our schedule) and completed the work according to the estimate. They were neat, polite and as unobtrusive as possible. They saved us money by not replacing the entire box/breaker bars, as these were in OK shape. We have since hired Jim for another job.
Description of Work: Checked and repaired breaker box in our home. Replaced all breaker switches. Sealed electrical lines entering house and sealed outside meter housing to prevent future water damage.

The cost was a bit high, but it was a one hour response on a Saturday morning so it is within range. If I were to hire him for a non-emergency job, I would get other bids to compare price.
Description of Work: Replaced the main 200 amp breakers in the first floor rental apartment. It was an "emergency" call early on Saturday morning after the breaker failed the evening before.

SOUNDED BORED WITH MY QUESTION ABOUT WHETHER PROBLEM SHOULD BE LOOKED AT BY AN ELECTRICIAN AS OPPOSED TO IF THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE I COULD CHECK MYSELF. A COUPLE OF TIMES, HE REMARKED IN AN IMPATIENT VOICE, "I DON'T KNOW WHY YOUR CIRCUIT IS SHUTTING OFF, MAYBE THE AC IS DEFECTIVE" (WHICH I TOLD HIM WAS UNLIKELY AS IT'S BEEN INCIDENT FREE SINCE I BOUGHT IT SEVERAL YEARS AGO). WHEN RECEPTION BECAME TO BAD TO CONTINUE CONVERSATION HE HUNG UP BUT HE NEVER CALLED BACK. MY IMPRESSION IS HE KNEW IT WOULDN'T BE A BIG EXPENSIVE JOB SO HE DECIDED TO BLOW ME OFF. I'M MYSTIFIED AS TO HOW THIS COMPANY GOT GOOD REPORTS FROM OTHERS.

WHEN WE REALIZED I HAD A PLUMBING PROBLEM I ASKED FOR A PLUMBER RECOMMENDATION AND ON THE SPOT HE CALLED HIS PLUMBER FOR ME AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM. HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT WAS REQUIRED (LABELED THE CIRCUITS ON MY BREAKER BOX) AND TESTED TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING ELSE WAS WORKING. (HE EVEN INSTALLED A SMOKE DETECTOR FOR ME). I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE SATISFIED. HE RETURNED MY INITIAL CALL IMMEDIATELY AND ARRIVED EVEN EARLIER THAN ANTICIPATED.
Description of Work: I THOUGHT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN MY BASEMENT BECAUSE THE LIGHTS AND OTHER APPLIANCES WOULDN'T GO ON. JIM QUICKLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THAT IN FACT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY SUMP PUMP WHICH WAS CAUSING A SHORT. HE FIXED THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM BY TURNING OFF THE POWER TO THE SUMP PUMP AND DID A FEW OTHER ADJUSTMENTS.
