They were punctual, professional, and polite. They also worked very efficiently.
Description of Work: We hired them in December 2007. Our toilet would continue to run for over 5 minutes (sometimes trickle for nearly 10 minutes) after being flushed and was wasting a lot of water. Allen Plumbing came right away and replaced the worn out ballcock and flapper. While we were hesitant that they charge "dispatch fees ($39.99)" just to come in and take a look at the problem (but the fee would be waived if you decide to use their service), we liked their responsiveness and all the good reviews on Angie's List. So we decided to go for it. They came in right away, identified the problem and fixed the toilet immediately. It's been working perfectly fine ever since, and we did see a dramatic decrease in the water bill thereafter.

They wouldn't give a price for a basic installation of a washer and dryer in a new unit. I went with someone who gave me a flat rate. I may have wound up paying more but I have no interest in basing the payment on how efficiently they work for what is a routine job. Also, I was offended by their practice of charging travel time, not from their home office, but from whichever job they happened to be at prior to mine.

WE APOLOGIZE IF YOU SOMEHOW GOT THE WRONG IMPRESSION ABOUT OUR PRACTICES. OUR EXPERIENCE HAS SHOWN THAT CUSTOMERS WOULD PREFER TO HAVE AN ACCURATE PRICE BEFORE WORK BEGINS RATHER THAN A GUESS OVER THE PHONE. WHILE YOU MAY FEEL YOUR JOB WAS "BASIC" OR "ROUTINE", IT SEEMS UNFAIR TO EXPECT US TO QUOTE AN ACCURATE PRICE FOR A JOB THAT IS SIGHT UNSEEN. EVERY JOB HAS DIFFERENT VARIABLES AND FACTORS WHICH CAN AFFECT THE FINAL COST. WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR "TRAVEL TIME" AND I APOLOGIZE IF YOU SOMEHOW GOT THE WRONG IMPRESSION. THE DISPATCH FEE TO GET A LICENSED PLUMBER OUT TO YOUR HOME IS WAIVED IF YOU AUTHORIZE US TO GO AHEAD WITH THE WORK OR PROVIDE A SMALL DEPOSIT FOR COMPLETION AT A LATER DATE.

I just wanted to let people know that they should understand the pricing with them. He wanted $200 to just diagnose the problem, not $49.99.
Description of Work: They did a good job. I have a gas fireplace and he put a new battery in the fireplace. He told me it would be $49.99 to come out and look, but then he said it was $200 when he came over to see it. It took him less than ten minutes to finish the job.

WE ARE PUZZLED THAT A REVIEW WITH SUCH A POOR OVERALL GRADE WOULD BEGIN BY SAYING “THEY DID A GOOD JOB”, BUT WE APPRECIATE THE A RATINGS IN EVERY OTHER CATEGORY. THE CUSTOMER CONTACTED US ABOUT A PROBLEM WITH HER GAS FIREPLACE. A SERVICE CALL WAS SETUP AND OUR TERMS OF SERVICE INCLUDING COST WERE DISCUSSED. OUR TECHNICIAN ARRIVED AT THE SCHEDULED TIME. HE ADVISED THE CUSTOMER THAT ADDITIONAL TESTING WOULD BE REQUIRED TO PROPERLY DETERMINE THE PROBLEM WITH HER FIREPLACE UNIT. HE PROVIDED THE COST FOR THIS DIAGNOSTIC WORK TO THE CUSTOMER. AS HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY EXPLAINED BY THE OFFICE, THE DISPATCH FEE IS THEN WAIVED. THE CUSTOMER IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE OFFICE WITH OUR TECHNICIAN PRESENT TO DISPUTE THE QUOTED REPAIR COST. IN A GOODWILL EFFORT TO PLEASE THIS CUSTOMER, WE AGREED TO HER REQUEST TO COMPLETE THE REQUIRED WORK AT A REDUCED COST. OUR TECHNICIAN WAS ABLE TO RETURN THE GAS FIREPLACE TO FULL WORKING CONDITION. A PERSONAL FOLLOW UP CALL FROM THE OFFICE WAS MADE TO ENSURE THAT THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED TO THE CUSTOMER’S SATISFACTION. AGAIN, WE ARE CONFUSED BY THE HARSHNESS OF THE OVERALL GRADE CONSIDERING THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND FINAL OUTCOME. WE HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT THIS MEMBER AGAIN TO ASSURE HER SATISFACTION WITH NO RESPONSE.

I was very happy to have had such quick and efficient service, especially when it is so cold and many service calls are happening. Communication was excellent and they followed up with a professional, detailed invoice/receipt for the work and mailed it to me promptly.
Description of Work: I had a heating issue at an investment property that required immediate attention during very cold weather. Adam answered my call right away and sent a very nice plumbing tech the very next day. His tech arrived right on time, was knowledgeable, diagnosed the problem correctly and fixed the heating problem along with servicing the furnace.

At the end, it went well. They diagnosed the problem with the pressure stat quickly and changed it. However, we had a faulty safety valve which should have been very easy to detect but they did not. As a result, our boiler would run at operating temperature with steam coming out of the valve. Our basement was quickly filled with Vapor and was very difficult to breath. We had to shut the boiler down and call again for an emergency repair. They acknowledged their error and changed the valve at no cost. However, they also spotted another "issue" and recommended that I clean another valve. They charged me $200 and I said it was OK because they recommended it. When I came home, it did not seem to be a critical fix (I think they were looking for ways to get their margin back). Overall, these guys are pros, but one needs to be there and ask hard questions.

The work was courteous, professional and well done. He was able to allay some of my fears about further leakages, since I had just spent five hours cleaning up ice cold dirty water that had leaked all over my basement. He carefully explained what the work he was going to do was for and the gradual failure of the original expansion tank had probably caused other problems as well that were fixed earlier in the year.
Description of Work: The furnace bypass was spraying water all over the basement, so this issue was diagnosed as an undersized expansion tank that had failed. He replaced the tank with a larger one and a new bleed valve, and checked all the operations of the furnace.

We needed a hot water heater and while we were going to do this cheaply, Michael at Allen Plumbing gave a solid reason why we should go with them instead. Quality of service. Plain and simple. You get what you pay for and with Allen Plumbing we got much more. After installing the hot water heater we had a problem with the hot water in the shower. They sent a plumber over right away and the issue was our fault, they took care of it without an extra charge. I can't stress enough the professionalism and the quality of service these guys provided! Completely happy and will use again for our other plumbing projects! I highly recommend them for all of your plumbing needs!

The company answered the phone immediately. Phone conversation was extremely courteous. I received two follow-up phone calls to let me know when Michael was going to arrive. Michael diagnosed the issue quickly and waived his standard fee for diagnosis since it was easy to identify the problem. He let me know exactly how much the job would cost before he proceeded with the work and kept me updated as work progressed. Clean truck and well-dressed. Extremely professional.

Both plumbers were professional and gave frequent updates on progress and estimated costs, and also indulged our people-loving golden retriever. We had a response within 15 minutes of the emergency call, including a clear estimate of costs (obviously additional charges on a weekend) and time frame for when the plumber could be at the house. The plumber even called again to say that he was running late due to earlier emergency jobs. Again, very professional with a clear cost estimate, plus he saved the damaged pipe as a souvenir for my mortified father.
Description of Work: Initially contacted to replace sink shut off valves and inspect furnace. We called on a Monday morning and had a plumber at our house on Tuesday morning. The following weekend, we placed on emergency call to the company after my father drilled through a water pipe while doing kitchen renovation.

Brian called to give us his ETA, and arrived when he said he would. He came in to assess the work and gave us the estimate for the amount of work he needed to do. (Allen charges $50 for estimates, but if you have them do the work, it is absorbed into your overall cost.) We ran into a little hiccup gaining access to the water main shut-off, but Brian was very flexible and said he could do all the work that did not require shutting off the supply. In the end it was possible for him to do all the work in one visit. Our new sink is deeper than the old one, so Brian had to re-work some of the drain pipes under the sink. In addition, he was able to re-route the hose connecting the dishwasher to the drain (the people who installed the dishwasher left a lot of slack that made it hard to store items under the sink). We now have much better use of the storage space under the sink. He used all copper piping to connect our ice-maker to the water line, and added a shut-off specific to that pipe. He also provided us additional slack on the back of the refrigerator so we can move it without having to disconnect anything. Brian was very thorough, focused on his work, and reviewed all of his work with me before he left. He also did a great job cleaning up after he finished, which was really great. We would definitely call Allen Plumbing again in the future.
Description of Work: We had new countertops and a sink installed. Allen Plumbing came to re-connect our disposal, install the new sink fixtures, and connect our freezer's ice-maker to the water line.

We had used Allen Plumbing before for work on a heater and they had seemed good so we hired them again to do some small plumbing jobs. One of repairs was to adjust a faucet. The plumber attempted this work while saying he did not have the correct tool. He damaged the part he was trying to adjust and left the faucet in a non-working state (it was working when he started; just not perfectly) saying that he'd have to get a replacement part. He came back a few days later with the replacement part and with great difficulty repaired and adjusted the faucet. After a month or two the faucet was out of adjustment again. Allen Plumbing contacted me after I submitted this report to Angie's list and Michael Allen came out personally and repaired my faucet. I appreciate their willingness to fix the situation. I do wish, however, that all their employees could do the plumbing work as competently as Mr. Allen.

High grades for convenience, competency and efficiently getting the job done. I contacted them on a Friday and they had a plumber for me Monday a.m. Excellent. My price had doubled from what it would have cost if I had stuck with the home improvement store's installation services. Disappointment on the price. I did not receive an original estimate other than when the plumber arrived to assess the situation. They performed approx 5 hours of work @ $980 = $196/hour for labor. I'm not a plumber but this seems high.
Description of Work: Install/replace cabinet sink with a pedestal sink (sink was already purchased). Fix running toilet and clear shower drain with a snake. The existing cabinet sink was a mess and had to be pulled. I had bought a pedestal sink w/ faucet at a home improvement store and had originally planned for them to do the installation for approx $300. However, it was a major chore, for various reasons, to get their contracted plumber to the house to do the work. After three weeks, I gave up on them and contacted Allen Plumbing which I learned of in Angie's List to do the installation (labor and some small parts). In addition, the toilet would run some. The flapper seemed like not a tight fit. Also, the shower drain was clogged so it made sense for one plumber to do all the work.

I inquired about a quote for removing an old radiator and installing a new one. The person I talked to was polite, helpful, and professional. However, I decided to try another company because Allen Plumbing charges a $49.95 fee to come out to look at the job. They waive this fee if they perform the work. I don't know if this fee is typical, but none of the other plumbers I called mentioned one. I was wary of agreeing to an up-front fee for a company that I hadn't tried before.

The sewer line cracked over the weekend. We had no use of any facilities in the house on Sunday. After getting recommendations from a neighbor we respected and checking on Angie's List we called Allen Plumbing at 7:30 AM on Monday morning. They sent someone over in a couple of hours and replaced the sewer line during the course of the day. The man dispatched was very professional, very courteous and pleasant, and the job was well done. We decided to use them for a couple of other jobs we had previously thought about, and they did them later in the week, quickly and with little fuss. The work was not the most inexpensive, but I believe it was fair, and the work was done professionally, well and quickly.

I was favorably impressed with the service. I called at about 7 or 7:30, got an answering machine, described the problem, received a personal answer within 30 minutes, was told about the fee for the estimate, which would be canceled/included if work was done. I was told I could have a workman there in a few minutes (about 20 actually). He arrived promptly, was friendly, knowledgeable, diagnosed the handle problem as needing a new one (the fixture was at least 20 years old), found the cut-off valve in the unit, got the fixtures needed from his truck, finished the work and cleaned up, was paid and out of the house by 9:30!
Description of Work: I needed a new shower head and the handle that turns on the shower and provides hot/cold water was impossible to turn.

Symptom was a "wobbly" toilet. Allen plumbing charges a minimum $49 "dispatch fee" which they said would be applied toward any work done. Without touching anything, I was told it would be $250 just to take the toilet off (and replace the wax seal, assuming that was the only problem). Once the toilet was off, they told me that the flange was cracked and would need to be replaced by cutting a hole in the ceiling of my finished basement. I asked how much that would cost, and I was unclear where the number came from when he said "umm, .... upper eights". I was not given any written estimate. I said to go ahead, and the work took several hours, and was completed to my satisfaction. The toilet no longer wobbles at all. They do not accept credit cards, which is disappointing. My only real complaint (and the reason for my low grade on professionalism) was the lack of any documentation. In particular, I was told (after giving them a check) that I would receive "an itemized receipt" in the mail. How do I know they won't just "itemize" a bunch of things that happen to add up to $860? I'm not suggesting that's what they'll do, just trying to point out that it would be much more professional and transparent if they provided an itemized, *written* estimate *before* the work begins, along with an itemized receipt when the work is completed. I was very satisfied with the quality of the work, and my only hesitation with recommending them is their lack of transparency in estimating and pricing.

On 8/1/08, the owner at Allen personally answered the phone, told me the name of the repair person coming and said that he would be there within 90 minutes (on a summer Friday yet). The person came earlier than 90 minutes, poked around, found and assessed the likely cause as condensation dripping through from visible gaps in the covering of the coolant pipe, and thoroughly repaired those gaps - all the while thoroughly explaining what he found and what he was doing. The repair person also told me the likely price in the midst of his repair and stuck to that price. (The repair person was there for about two hours.) In retrospect, I thought the price was on the high side, discussed it with the owner, and came to the conclusion that it was. But I also think one gets what one pays for(if one is lucky), and I thought that it was a solid "A" performance in all ways and well worth what I had paid. I would be pleased to use Allen Plumbing again.
Description of Work: Had leak and dripping from our condo unit a/c which was leaking through the ceiling onto the floor of the unit below us. The first person I called (who had previously serviced our two a/c units) twice kept me on the hook for more than a day then stood me up after promising to come.

The service employee who handled all of my calls was polite and courteous. A technician was assigned to take a look at the work I needed and they were great about calling in the window of the tech's arrival to make sure I was home or could be home. The technician looked at the job, quoted a price for the entire work, and asked for a dispatch fee which, I was told, would be included in the actual bill for the work should I use their company. I was considering replacing the jacuzzi faucets and was told by the tech to check out a plumbing showroom nearby to see what I would like to install. I went there right away and found out that this referred showroom did not exist. Since there was some urgency to the job and the service at that point was good (except for the misdirection about the showroom), I called to schedule the Allen plumber to return the next day. Although there were a number of visits that were needed over the next 3 days to finish this job, the work was done in about 5 1/2 hours over 4 days. I had the flexibility to be around for that time, but others might not! Ultimately, the work itself was done well, the cleanup was good, and the plumber was friendly and patient (since the actual work was in a hard to reach place in a sunroom). A billing concern arose related to the dispatch fee not being included in the quoted job, but I was listened to and the situation was handled in a way that I felt respected and fairly treated. I do not believe this billing miscommunication between the tech and me was malicious on his part. I was given a refund for the dispatch fee and also an additional call was made to me to relate that my miscommunication situation around the dispatch fee was discussed between the owner and all techs to offer more clear and uniform wording for future customers. Although there was some glitches in this job, I felt that the company worked with me, not against me. I would call them again.
Description of Work: I called for service due to leaking jacuzzi plumbing which needed attention relatively quickly. A technician came to my home the same afternoon as my call, looked at the job, quoted a general amount for the work we discussed (which ultimately was just the work I wanted done though there was some discussion of additional installation of new accessible shutoffs from my condo unit which I did not end up doing.) The old piping to the jacuzzi tub was removed and disposed of and new drawoffs were supplied and installed both under the jacuzzi and to an outside deck.
