About us

WE ARE NOT TAKING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We do NOT use the Angie's List Message Center. Contact us directly at http://www.repaircollective.com/contact-us.php ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our availability can vary from week to week, or month to month. We can't always take on new clients, especially when that would interfere with serving our regular clients that we have been taking care of for years. Phone us for the most up-to-date information, including any exceptions to this. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Home repair, construction renovation carpentry, plumbing, electrical, appliance repair, bathroom and kitchen work, tile repair, chemical sensitivity, energy efficiency, installations, problem solving and troubleshooting of all kinds. We are the ones who figure it out when the last guy has said "It can't be done." ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As a collective, we try our best to observe the Seven Cooperative Principles listed at the bottom of this page: http://rivervalleymarket.coop/about/frequently-asked-questions/ Because of principle #6, “cooperation among cooperatives,” if you are a member of a collective or cooperative, please call us and we will try to be of help in whatever way we can. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PLEASE READ!!! ALL work is done on a "TIME PLUS MATERIALS" basis. Although we may hazard a guess on the general BALLPARK your repairs may cost, it is impossible to know every detail of everything we run into in the kind of work we do. Therefore we do NOT give estimates. "With estimates someone always loses." With an estimate either you are paying to much, or your contractor is doing sloppy work to come in on price. It could also mean we end up working for free, and given the portion of what we charge that end up in our pockets, we couldn't afford that. We DO NOT pad our prices out to insure the safety of overcharging for each job; instead we charge a fair job for what we run into. We are sorry, but if you are not okay with us using the standard of "time plus materials" for handyperson work, you will have to look elsewhere. Our long term clients have come to know that sometimes the price is very low, and sometimes it can be higher, but that, in the long run, it averages out to be a great deal and it is always fair.

A small, but difficult, job. A stackable washer and dryer were built into an already small closet, but then a plumbing chase had been built in front of it. We had to disassemble things just to get into the space. We are happy she was satisfied with the work and the price. For what needed to be done, it was expensive. But she was right, for what it actually took it was a good price. Fortunately she knew many of the important issues, and more importantly, she communicated them to us, so there were few surprises.

Editing our Web site on a weekly basis to indicate when we are too busy to take new clients simply isn't practical. Aside from that, there are numerous internet listings that would have to be updated, some of which we have no control over. In the busier seasons, one of us, usually Tim, can spend 8 hours or more, an entire day's worth, just answering phone calls. That's an entire day behind a desk when he could be out fixing things! Which do you think he likes better? And you can guess whether our regulars customers want him behind a desk, or at their house making sure the toilet flushes and the front door opens! We are certainly not going to let him spend another half day editing various sites and listings on the internet, and our regular customers are thankful we won't. Though we sometimes have to say we can't take new customers, and it frees up an entire day of time when we do, we actually do return all our phone calls. When we can offer advice, we are glad to do so. The only way to find out how busy we are is to press seven buttons on your telephone.

Description of Work: He was really a very nice man and did wonderful work on a set of stairs going from a screened in porch to the yard. However, It took much longer than he had estimated in terms of time and money. He stuck to his original price quote, but I felt badly because it took him quite a bit longer. Also, I could not leave him voice mail messages. If he has addressed the communication issues and his time estimations, he does great work.

This work actually took place on October 6, 2010. I'm glad she was so satisfied with the work. If I remember correctly, and I may not as it has been so long since the work was done, I gave a range on the labor, though offered no estimate, and could only make a wild guess on the materials, as the lumberyards had long since closed. I put in an extra 3 hours free to get it to turn out right, and covered a tiny bit of extra materials that were due to my error. The work was finished in one day, at less cost than I had guessed, though I finished at 6:00 instead of 3:00 which did not increase the charges. Usually we are hard to get ahold of because we are out working during the day, and often finish when it is too late to return calls, sometimes Tim is even too tired to check messages. Our regular customers know that for true, dire emergencies, they can call Tim at home, though for emergencies where something is flooding or smoking, get anyone you can reach to come. Knowing that this work took place just after Tim's birthday, we can guess why he let the messages fill up! We often like to point out to people where to shut off the electricity and water to their entire house, so they can take immediate action to prevent damage. Please ask us about this if we don't offer, and pay attention when we do. That two minutes of knowledge can avert a catsotrophe!

Description of Work: I called this company and was left with an answering maching recording that said, The Repair Collective does not do work for people unless the belong to a food coop!!!. I thought this listing was very poor and did not list this as: Will only do work if you belong to a food coop. I am looking for a carpenter to enlarge an area in my livingroom wall, to put in a larger air conditioner. I have had bad luck with a current one I have contacted (who originally put in the first one) who has said he would be here at the end of the week - 4 weeks now!! and still has not shown!! I have a newborn grand child and need this done asap!.

Response from THE REPAIR COLLECTIVE
Wow! We have never even heard of this person, let alone received a message from her. Angie's List has verified that she neither spoke with us nor left a message. Of course, it is NOT true that we ONLY work for members of the food co-op. At times our schedule is just too full to take on new clients. There are sometimes a few exceptions to this., and as a worker's collective, we do try to uphold the Seven Cooperative Principles, the sixth of which is “Cooperation Among Cooperatives.” Regardless of whatever conclusions she jumped to, had she read any of the other reviews about us, she would have seen that we do actually return every call (where the message is intelligible, so if you are calling from a cell phone, please verify your message is not garbled). Whether or not this is was actually the emergency described, we could have given her referrals to competent craftsmen and craftswomen in the area. Had this been a true emergency, we likely would have found one for her. Angie's List has also verified that her complaints about the mystery contractor who won't call her back has nothing to do with us and is someone unknown to us whom she had previously called. Why that would appear in our review space, I have no idea, but something obviously isn't right here. To their credit, Angie's List does try to verify reports, and will not take down reports if an Angie's List member claims they are correct. Although it looks bad in this case, it does show some intergrity on the part of Angie's List, and I assume that any member that we would be working with, would be able to read between the lines in this report.

I wonder if there was some sort of telephone transcription error in their comments. The members struck me as much more articulate than then their comments might lead you to believe. Did Angie's List leave something out? They had some squirrels get in through rotted facia under the roof. The pest control company had been there, and they wanted things sealed up before the squirrels came back. They were meeting with someone for an energy audit at the same moment we were looking at the work, so it was a little hard to discuss our proposed solutions. While we were waiting to speak with them, we uncovered some chimney flashing leaks, that were leading water into the fascia, and causing the rot. We weren't able to get in there as quickly as we hoped, because the homeowners hadn't returned our calls confirming the date. Or perhaps they left a garbled message from their cell phone, so it's always best to listen to the messages you leave. Although this was by no means an emergency, we did ask some of our existing clients to let them have their spots, so we could get to them in a more timely manner. We built a cricket alongside the chimney to stop the leaks. In essence, we made a little roof to not only divert water away from the chimney, but also to keep snow from piling up there. We replace the facia in the three locations, including one that they hadn't noticed before. Though we usually avoid the use of PVC, because the manufacture of it is so toxic, we used it here to insure that the job wouldn't need to be done again in the future. Inside there were some holes drilled into the flooring. While they had thought a simple plug would do, on my own time I found some prefinished hardwood samples that matched their flooring and carefully cut out the sections with the holes and replaced them with a near exact match. The bathroom fan was falling out of the ceiling. Instead of replacing a fan that was operating as well as it ever had, I made new clips to hold it in place, saving time, money, effort, and the possibility of turning it into a bigger project.

Description of Work: Tim was hired to assist with a variety of repair and handyman jobs- repairing our refrigerator, baby proofing the home, including installing baby gates, as well as several minor repairs. He was professional, very nice and completed all jobs as requested. I look forward to having back to work on the outdoor items we discussed that needed to wait until the weather was a it warmer.

I think there was a transcription error in the description above. We replaced a FAN in the bathroom. We replaced the fan sealed up some leaks in duct. When we did some testing on the flow, we found that the last people had allowed some cellulose insulation into the ducting which had clogged the exhaust. An easy fix, if one bothers to check the airflow in the first place. We worked to get the cement board in the basement entrance tight enough, so that it wouldn't need additional sealing.

We are in the process of a light remodel of our vintage 1980 bathrooms. I am doing as much of the work as I can myself, but I was not up to replacing the tub. Tim was able to come in and remove the old unit and get the new tub and 3-piece surround up and working so my family could take showers the next day. The drywall patching was not completed on that first day, so Tim came back a few days later and finished the job. I had indicated ahead of time that I could be flexible on this point, so as to better fit into Tim's schedule. As with most jobs, some issues arose that required some creativity to solve - Tim took this all in stride and managed to stay within the budget. Tim and his helper, Cesar were paid by the hour on this job, and they worked hard to meet our needs. Tim and Cesar are friendly , courteous and conscientious. I would not hesitate to call them again for help on future projects.

The homeowner had done a lot of work himself and picked up some of the materials. He had done a lot of good work, but was going to have to bypass some of the hoped for renovations because he hadn't been able to find anyone to undertake the work. We happened to have a cancellation and got him right in. Fortunately, we were able to get things done that would let him finish on his schedule. Because of the timeline the homeowner was on we had to walk into the project sight unseen. The tight scheduling for us both left us walking right into a job in progress without seeing in first. Some major pieces he had picked out didn't fit into the spaces as he had expected. It took some extra time and effort, but we were able to modify all the connections so it fit perfectly. In a couple of days we had him back on track, and he was helpful and accommodating when I had to make an extra visit to put on the finishing touches.

Everything was done to a very high standard. They were on time and completed everything on schedule and exactly as promised. They were very professional, and everything was great. Really a top-notch experience. Everything looks terrific. I would most definitely call them again!
Description of Work: The team repaired some damaged wood in the front of the house, removing the old wood and redoing everything really nicely. Tim came ahead of time to do an estimate, and planned very carefully for what would be done. He asked our input on some choices that we could make regarding materials, and was very professional throughout. They also cut some tile in the kitchen to fit a new appliance, and reattached some gutters that had become disconnected due to winter snow and ice.

. Were these two ever appreciative. At the end, the member was sorry she hadn't thanked Cesar. With the heaps of compliments he got, I don't think he missed the thanks. . I gave a guess of what the labor costs might be, since we really don't ever do estimates, especially with rot. We ran into more than expected, as was often the case, but still managed to fix everything in a day, which was surprising. . I had first thought it would be preferable to do the repair with pressure treated wood. They preferred regular pine as I'd pointed out it could be painted sooner, and was readily available in wider widths. As it turns out, we'd found a tiny mistake in the original construction that could fairly easily be corrected to keep the rot from happening again.

Member somehow knew exactly what the job would cost. While we try to give a ballpark of what we might run into, it's hard to say with small jobs, which is why we have to work on a time plus materials basis to be fair to everyone, rather than to give estimates. One thing breaking off, or something unexpected, could quickly add a couple of hours to the job. Her guess sounded somewhere in the right ballpark, and ended up being exactly right.

He has a web site, but he does prefer to use the phone. I began by using the web site. He did a cleaning of our electric dryer and my wife really liked his work. We decided to use him to help with our bathrooms. It just went very well. He does want to do first class work. And he does.
Description of Work: this involved two separate visits to upgrade our bathrooms based on purchases we made w/o Tim's complete advice. The installer set up an evening appointment for us to go over the work to be done. We needed to buy some parts and he was very helpful and explicit about what we should get. The workers showed up punctually and did the installation in the time and for the cost they estimated. It was a two-day job and they had to stay a little late the second day, which they did without any fuss. They were very neat and cleaned up after themselves. The installation is excellent and we have not had any problems.

. This was a fun job. Putting dishwashers in where they weren't before and filling in the cabinetry is just the right mix of hands-on work and problem solving to make for a really enjoyable day. The new exhaust fan and its venting were similar, plus Cesar and I got to work alongside each other which made it easier to help each other out and share ideas. . I should point out that they didn't HAVE to pickup the parts themselves. We usually pick up everything. They were doing some of the preparation work themselves, and offered. It was a help to us with our already long days. Often it doesn't pay to pick up materials for your contractor: we have sometimes found ourselves putting in a bit of extra work to compensate for materials that either weren't the right quality, somehow necessitated changing how things worked, or resulted in another trip to the hardware store. In this case however, everything was perfect, and they even found one part for a future project that was slightly better than what I had in mind.

Tim McNerney restored my faith in appliance repairmen. My dishwasher timer went out and after a nightmare experience with another repair service, I was just putting up with it, manually advancing the timer. We saw Tim's truck in the grocery store parking lot and gave him a shot. What a delight! He was courteous, friendly, and competent, approaching the situation as an interesting puzzle to be solved. He even allowed our three-year-old to "help" by unscrewing a few screws. Not only did he repair the problem, he did it for far less the other service charged just to show up. It's been awhile, and I don't remember the exact price or date. We have also had him repair an old clothes dryer, and again he gave stellar service at a very reasonable price. He seems to really enjoy figuring out the quirks of old appliances. Both repairs have held up for at least two years now, and both appliances continue to serve without other problems.

. I realize this is transcribed from the telephone, so I'll point out it was "caulked" the bathtub, not corked. . Though I have been hearing reports, as she said, that tradespeople are writing their own reviews on the internet, my comments to her did not apply specifically to Angie's List. In fact, I just ran into one other homeowner in listed in our reviews, and she told me that Angie's List had just called her to verify the information (and perhaps to verify that it was an actual homeowner's review). So I've seen that Angie's List, unlike other internet sites, actually does verify that the reviews aren't bogus. Perhaps people are more reticent to give a harshly negative review here, because they can't do it anonymously, as they can on other sites. The one shortcoming to any internet review site is that you don't know who is giving you the referral, and if they share your tastes and opinions of what constitutes good work. For example, if you were a vegetarian, you probably aren't going to ask the 500 pound fellow in a cowboy hat for restaurant recommendations. With internet reviews you can't see, much less know, who you are asking for advice. . Nothing beats actual word-of-mouth (from someone you know well). In this case, she had no one she could ask. So when a solid recommendation from a trusted friend isn't available, Angie's List can be the next best thing.

I contacted this person after learning about him on Angie's List. I was hoping to have some contracting projects done in my condo. It turns out that he's a pretty big-scale contractor who does not handle small domestic projects. But, he spent about half an hour on the phone with us (at no charge!) and gave us lots of helpful suggestions for getting the job done. We now have several names of people who might be able to do the work for us. I appreciated this business's willingness to take time with us and help us even though there was nothing in it for them. Thanks!

THIS IS ODD. ALTHOUGH I DO REMEMBER SPENDING A LOT OF TIME ON THE PHONE RECENTLY GIVING ADVICE, I WOULDN'T HAVE TOLD ANYONE WE DON'T HANDLE SMALLER JOBS. IN FACT THAT IS THE MAINSTAY OF OUR BUSINESS; MANY OF OUR JOBS DON'T GO OVER A SINGLE DAY. PERHAPS OUR SCHEDULE WAS UNUSUALLY BUSY AT THAT TIME, OR IT WAS SOMETHING THAT I THOUGHT COULD BE HANDLED BY AN UNSKILLED PERSON AT LESS COST TO THEM. I'M CURIOUS TO KNOW HOW SHE CAME TO THINK WE ARE "BIG-SCALE." WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO GIVE FREE ADVICE, OR LISTEN TO SEE IF WHAT IS BEING DONE ON YOUR PLACE SOUNDS REASONABLE. ONE OF THE FORMER MEMBERS OF THE REPAIR COLLECTIVE, A GENERAL CONTRACTOR WHO HAS BUILT HOMES FROM THE GROUND UP, I SEND OUT TO OUR CUSTOMERS HOMES TO CONSULT ON LARGER PROJECTS WHEN THEY NEED SOMEONE TO DO THAT. ALL OF THE PROJECTS THE REPAIR COLLECTIVE UNDERTAKES, I GO OUT TO REVIEW MYSELF WITH THE CLIENT.
