Luis Jara Home Improvement

Called Luis Mon before Thanksgiving, he returned call same day and made appointment to look at job the next day. We agreed on price and install time which was day after Thanksgiving. Luis showed up early with helper and finished job within 4 hrs. The whole experience could not have been better, i needed the shower doors installed asap and Luis met my needs at a reasonable price. I would recommend Luis and will definitely hire him again.

Luis Jara Home Improvement came with the highest recommendation to me from the hardware store in Roslindale, and he absolutely lived up to it. (And he also lived up to all the glowing recommendations I read afterwards on Angie's List.) We had a number of projects we were contemplating. Luis listened very carefully and helped clarify what was most necessary. He came up with strategies to meet our needs, in a way that stayed within our budget, and he never once tried to sell us on additional projects. His goal stated goal was to work with us on doing the best job possible within the budget we had. He and his crew were punctual, professional, pleasant, hard-working, efficient, and conscientious. The crew always cleaned up at the end of the day. When all the projects were finished, there were a few details that I pointed out that needed attention, and he and his crew took care of them in the blink of an eye. Luis even fixed a window that was not on his list of projects, just because he noticed it, and could easily take care of it. Luis's rates were completely reasonable, and he was 100% transparent about the cost of materials for the project. It was a pleasure to deal with him. He communicates clearly about the scope of projects, the cost, and his methods. His philosophy of home improvement is apparent in all that he does -- improving the home using strategies that correspond to your budget. He clearly enjoys and takes pride in his work, and his work is excellent. I can't recommend Luis Jara Home Impovement highly enough. We will definitely be contacting him when it's time to do other renovations around the house.

Luis was great. He called on Monday and came by late Tuesday afternoon. He had both doors fixed in no time. We have already hired him to replace some porch railings come spring. I would highly recommend him. He was knowledgeable, pleasant, responsive and came when he said he would. We are glad we contacted him and look forward to having him do work for us in the future!!!

Luis did a terrific job. He is very professional and cares about the quality of his work. He was concerned that the hardware that came with the shelves would be insufficient to support weight placed on them so he purchased butterfly anchors at no extra cost and used them instead. He measured everything well and there were no problems. I will call him again for any additional home repair or improvement work I need.

Luis and his workers are very professional and courteous. Luis asks a lot of questions so that he can get it right. He has great advice on design and decor. He communicates throughout project and keeps to schedule. He is not the cheapest in pricing because he wants to do quality job. I already have my next project planned with Luis. Since I have an older home I need a contractor who can do quality work in timely fashion. I am very satisfied with the work Luis did on project 1!!!

It went very well. There was some confusion on my part about the date to commence the work, but once started, was done in a timely manner. Luis was very prompt about answering messages.

That went well. It was just the cost of the "Big Deal." It didn't take too long. It took them an hour the most or just 45 minutes. Just one worker came out.

Luis was fantastic, he really came through for our family. He was very straightforward with pricing and estimates, and was able to start the job quickly. They did a great job patching some very large holes we had in our drywall due to water damage remediation, they paint job they did was perfect, and they did a great job blending in some ceiling patches that we had to do was well. He and his team worked around our schedule, and were able to do the job very quickly. He really went above and beyond to make sure our house was clean (they even mopped our floors before leaving for the day) and tools were away when they were done for the day, and to make sure there was nothing our son could get into. We couldn't be happier with the work they have done, and plan on using Luis for a variety of additional work.

Luis is personable, responsive and knowledgeable in many areas. The paint on our stair risers needed to be sanded down and refinished so he had his painter come to do the work. The painter did an excellent job, was efficient and left the area very clean considering all the sanding involved. I came home to no dust! His painter also caulked and painted some new window trim that was installed after our windows had suffered water leaks due to ice dams this past winter. The window came out great. My husband was so impressed that he paid a little extra than what was quoted. We are planning to hire Luis for several more, bigger jobs around the house. His prices are fair and he is very engaged in trying to understand what the client wants and the best approach to accomplish the work.

Two hours of handyman labor

It went very well. We were very pleased. He was very responsive and warm. He was great at laying out lower cost options. He gave us wonderful ideas. We have used them at least 2 other times.

I called on a holiday not really expecting a return call until the next day, but Luis called me back very quickly. He was willing to accommodate my rush schedule and offered to come to the house to scope out the project as well as go with me to the store to select the best doors. He was very responsive and even called me the next day when I hadn't gotten back to him with some details I told him I would get. In the end, I found some bypass sliding doors that I could install myself, so I didn't need Luis' services. But I was very impressed with his follow-through and responsiveness and would definitely consider calling him again.

l am happy to be a repeat customer of Luis. He has a friendly, customer-oriented demeanor and approaches all projects with enthusiasm and hard work. He is glad to provide suggestions on home improvement or can follow whatever directions you give him. I particularly like his attention to detail and the reasonable rates he quotes. Would recommend to others looking for a generalist handyman. Previous projects include assembling my TV stand, wine case, mounting a bathroom cabinet, installing a coat rack, towel bar and a glass shelf.

Old garbage disposal was jammed and no longer turning on. I initially contacted Luis through the Angie's List scheduler, but he didn't respond for several days so I called. I've found that phone calls are the best bet, for Luis and most other handymen. He picked up while in the middle of another job, and dropped by that very evening to check out the kitchen sink. He returned the very next day with the new unit, and installed within an hour, on time and under budget. Very professional and kind. Left me the original receipt. No funny business, just friendly honest service. Would use him again for any light project.

It went great! Luis took a very old apartment and transformed it into a splendid modern living space, including substantial renovation of the kitchen and bathroom that included building tile walls, installing new sinks, cabinets, counters, shelves, as well as painting the whole 1,200-square-foot space from top to bottom including scraping, preparing, sanding, plastering, caulking, priming, and painting the ceilings, walls, and woodwork including built-in cabinetry and hard-to-access space. He was patient and perseverant through a process that involved multiple changes along the way, and always kept the project on track. He did everything asked and offered helpful suggestions such as matching the bath cabinets to the new vanity sink and not the kitchen cabinets, or distributing minor-variant-colored bath tiles randomly throughout the walls instead of all in one clump to just name a few examples. He stayed accessible by phone and accountable for completing the project on time and to the high standard I needed to be able to rent out the place at market price. Luis also priced his work fair and reasonably, so I would know how much the work was going to cost before I made the decision to hire, and worked with me changes I initiated (I wanted a different size of chair rail and baseboard, for example) as well as some changes out of my control (the doors were delayed by over a month so I could get the right kind), he rolled with it and came through on his end reliably and honestly. I am very happy I have found Luis and will have him do work in the future. He is dependable and honest, and does great work!

Luis provided me with an installation date one week from my original call. He and his assistant arrived promptly at 11 am. He installed the door quickly and accurately. Luis and his assistant were very friendly and polite, and I was very happy with their work. He came prepared and did excellent work.

The work was never done. The provider didn't show up. When we called the provider to ask why he didn't show up, he had the wrong date written down even though we had confirmed the date with him via email. He also sounded very confused and barely understood what we were saying, so we didn't trust that he would do a good job and just cancelled the service. Also, the provider only wanted us to communicate with him via text message, but that is not something that we can easily do (based on the way our cell plans are structured)...and insisting that customers use that as the only means of communication is ridiculous. The provider did ask if we would reschedule with him, but he wanted to charge a totally different price than had previously been agreed on.

I bought a discount coupon to use Luis Jara's handman service, and then used him once more at his full rate. I've waited this long to write the review because Luis is a really nice guy and it was hard for me to write a poor review for him, but's that what his work deserves. Luis's skills are those of the average handy homeowner, which is what he advertises and what I wanted for some simple home tasks. However, I would not use Luis again. First, when he was in my home, he spent time telling me what he could do to make my house nicer/better. There's nothing wrong with that, in fact it can often be helpful, except that when I said that it wasn't something I was interested in (for example, power-washing the patio), he kept trying to convince me to do it. That was annoying, took time from what I asked him to do -- and he bills for that time. I might have lived with that, but there was a bigger problem. He had done a satisfactory job with the first work I had him do (remove an wall mount micro/vent hood and replace with a simple vent hood replace an old a bathroom ceiling fixture with a new one). I therefore called him again to connect a new ceiling fixture in the kitchen, where electrical had been put in but the fixture never connected and hung. Luis began the work but problems developed. That was okay -- he's not an electrician. I told him to stop working on it and I'd get an electrician in. However, he kept insisting he could do it and just needed a certain connector and he'd go to Home Depot for it, However, HD is at least a 20 minute ride away, and I didn't want to pay his hourly rate to do an errand. I told him we could call the local hardware store (5 minutes away), tell them what he needed, and I'd pick it up myself. Luis argued that HD was only10 minutes each way, not 20 (he seemed to think he knew better than me how far HD was from MY house), and kept insisting on going. Finally, I got tired of his arguing (he was pleasant, but wouldn't stop insisting), so I agreed, once he said he wouldn't charge me his full rate for the time (which he later denied saying). When we got to HD, it became clear he didn't know whatwase needed. How did I know this? He told me. He expressed frustration the HD salespeople couldn't tell him, and said he was glad an electrician came along whom he could ask. So instead of a quick 5-10 minutes in HD we spent almost an hour there while he tried to find out what he needed. When we got back to my house (and yes, it took more than 20 minutes each way) , he STILL couldn't get the fixture working. Then, when it came time to settle up, he calculated the price by charging for ALL the time he'd spent from the time he first arrived at my house, including the time to go to and from HD, the time spent there, and all the time trying to connect the fixture. We negotiated the final amount, with which I wasn't happy, but at this point I just wanted to be done with him. But even more than the money (which was a big enough issue), the reason I would never use him again was that he was not honest about his skill level. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he really believed he was able to do it. But regardless of his motivation, his constant insisting and arguing was inappropriate and unpleasant, and he ended up costing me twice or more what it would have cost to have had an electrician in, and in the end the work was never done. Again, I would have had no problem with Luis not being able to do the work, if he'd been honest about it. I DO have problems with someone insisting they can do something when they can't, then trying to cover up for it, and then charging for it, and in the end not having gotten the job done. In sum, the simple things Luis did for me he did adequately, which was what I needed. If that was my experience, I would have worked with him again. But if someone isn't straightforward about what they can and can't do, and wants to charge for every minute they're engaging in trial and error hoping they'll figure out how to get the job done, they're not someone I will work with again.

I was very pleased... Luis is responsive, returns calls, comes on schedule, and is pleasant to deal with. He does excellent work. He is neat, and has tons of experience to help you think through the best height or location for shelving, etc. He worked quickly, had all the tools and supplies. I will absolutely use him again.

Luis is very professional and enthusiastic. He also cares about doing a good job. It is sometimes hard to schedule with him -- perhaps because he's in such high demand.

Made bathroom handicap friendly. Did a very nice job and on time.
