RESIDENTIAL HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) SERVICE AND INSTALLATION. WARM AIR SYSTEMS, BOILERS, RADIANT FLOOR HEATING, BASEBOARD AND RADIATORS. GAS, OIL AND HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS.
Royal Air was reachable even when many other HVAC service providers were not due to call volume. We were able to reach Royal Air seconds before closing time. They promised to get back to me first thing in the morning and did so. Their technician, Jared, was at the location within two hours and fixed everything in a very professional manner. Even when the system had a hiccup later in the day (for another reason), Jared offered to make the 40 minute drive back out if necessary which thankfully was not. Overall we are very pleased with their service.
Description of Work: A/C compressor broke down on the hottest day of the year. Royal Air was called in when our existing heating/cooling service provider dropped the ball at the last second.

.The nice thing about them was that they came to replace our furnace a day after the old one died. They did all the paperwork for us for the government rebate we were going to receive. This was a great bonus because it was something I was dreading doing and they did it for me.

We contracted with Royal Air in November 2006 to replace our boiler with a Weil McLain Ultra high efficiency unit. The installation went well but, over the next two years, we had repeated failures of the unit. This is a complex system and most of the time, they sent a repairman with little or no model specific training. One problem was traced to improper installation of the intake pipe; the outside temperature sensor was never installed; and so on. Finally, the unit developed a gas leak and the gas company "red tagged" the system in the middle of winter. At that point, the manufacturer got involved and we were given a new boiler. This one is much better -- it's only cut out a few times and I was able to restart it myself. Part of the problem was a new and immature boiler design but Royal Air could have done a much better job installing the unit, troubleshoting, and correcting their mistakes once the were identified.

Response from ROYAL AIR SYSTEMS
In 2006, we contracted with the member to install a new High Efficiency Condensing Gas Boiler. This boiler was new to the market, and obviously had some design issues. Shortly after the installation of the system, we felt we had a defective boiler, however the manufacturer instructed us to follow their recommendations before they were willing to condemn the unit. We invested 70+ non-billable hours in keeping this system running and trying to keep the customer happy while we negotiated with the manufacturer to provide a replacement boiler. Once we had authorization, we installed the new boiler at no charge to the customer. Although we sympathize with the frustration the member felt, we were shocked to receive a complaint in this manner after all we had done to stand by our work.

We had Amana systems which were 14 years old. The attic system had failed and we initially thought to replace only the attic system. We received quotes from four different companies each selling a different brand. From each company we requested quotes for replacing just the attic and for upgrading the entire house. Royal took a different approach from the other companies. Royal provided a pricing guideline for options all the way from basic systems through geothermal. They then scheduled a visit to sit down and discuss all of the options and their pros and cons. We then picked what we thought would be the best fit. Royal provided a quote on that. I also asked for a quote on the top of the line systems to see what that would look like. We went back and forth many times until we came to the perfect system. I never felt any pressure along the way to make a commitment. Royal helped me discover what I really wanted and then built the system around that. When we looked at the prices, it just made sense to do the whole house and to do the top of the line equipment. The owner and his son (both named Arthur) are fantastic people. They both spent a lot of time making sure we were comfortable with the system prior to purchase and after the installation. They were very responsive to questions and issues. Some things I really liked about the installation: We needed to run a new refrigerant line to the attic. Royal took the time to run the new line down a duct chase. They had to cut an access panel into one closet. They put a nice cover over the area so future access will be easy, and it looks perfect. Running the line on the outside of the house was not an option for me aesthetically. Everyone who works for Royal reflects the owner's attitude of respect, cleanliness and professionalism. They always put on boot covers when they enter the home. The comfort in the home is excellent and very consistent. Utility bills appear to be less. It will take a longer period of usage to determine an accurate savings from the hybrid systems and high efficiency units. The electrical work was very tidy and organized. The thermostats are excellent and easy to program. The air filters appear to work very well. They installed one new air vent in the master bedroom to improve air flow and balance for the room with its vaulted ceiling. The finished look is very good and looks like the vent was always there. There were a few minor issues: The subcontractor plumber did not have a part he needed and had to do a temporary splice to the main house sewer. He returned the next day to finish the job. His work was done very well and had a nice neat look to it. The communicating setup was not correct initially. The owner's son returned and made sure all of the wiring and programming was setup correctly. Many of the installers are new to the communicating systems which can lead to issues. Arthur knows the systems very well. The humidifier control did not function correctly. It was a conflict in the manual versus auto mode which was promptly fixed. Finding a location for the vent pipe for the 95% furnace that met code and looked good was a small challenge due to windows and our patio. We ended up going along the basement wall to the side of the house near the outside condenser units. This required some minor framing changes to the exterior wall and cutting a hole in the siding. The end result looks good.
Description of Work: We replaced both our attic and basement heating and air conditioning systems with new Trane top of the line equipment. We decided to install communicating, hybrid systems using Heat Pumps and Gas Furnaces In the basement we installed the following: Furnace: XC95M - 95% AFEU 80K BTU with a modulated gas valve and multi-speed blower. Heat Pump: XL20i - 17.25 SEER, 12 EER, 3 ton unit Coils: Cased Aluminum Comfort Coils Air Filter: Clean Effects Humidifier: Large Bypass Humidifier Thermostat: XL900 Comfort Link II System In the attic we installed the following: Furnace: XC80 - 80% AFEU 60K BTU two-stage and multi-speed blower. Heat Pump: XL20i - 17.5 SEER, 12 EER, 3 ton unit Coils: Cased Aluminum Comfort Coils Air Filter: Clean Effects Thermostat: XL900 Comfort Link II System

We decided to take advantage of the Federal Energy Credit program to replace our antiquated heating system. We contacted Royal Air and they recommended a high efficiency Well McClain system that met the requisite efficiency requirements. We opted to also have our water heater replaced and go with an integrated water heater. Royal Air spent about 2 days doing the installation and I have to tell you it is a thing of beauty. The soldering is immaculate and everything is professionally laid out. It is an example of how things should be done in this day and age. I would have no qualms using them again and we do have a maintenance contract with them for both the heating and air conditioning systems.

I gathered a number of estimates for this job, and these were the only guys who gave me the confidence that they could solve the problem. My second floor has been under-heated--there wasn't enough duct-work in the house. I didn't want to go through ripping up walls and doing major surgery on the house, so I was trying to find someone who could come up with a creative solution to the problem without a huge expense and major construction. Arthur Pickett Jr. came out, went through the whole house, explained all the issues with the current duct work, and came up with a solution that involved stashing additional duct-work in two unused closets downstairs and snaking the ducts between floors. The impact on the floors was minimal--just a small cut for the new vents and I have heat upstairs! They also installed a full-house central A/C system. Arthur worked with me to go through all the options, both in terms of the duct-work and the A/C system, and came up with a great solution to a problem that no one else had been able to solve. The guys that did the work were excellent--super-professional and really hard workers. I also needed my electrical panel rebuilt as part of the upgrade--the old panel wouldn't support the A/C. Royal brought in an electrician who did a literally beautiful job on the new panel. Royal Air was also able to provide financing through GE that made the expense interest free for a year--a fantastic additional service. All in all, they did an excellent job. I will use them again for sure.
Description of Work: Added additional duct work to provide heat for second floor. Installed new central A/C. Upgrade to entire electrical panel--panel completely rebuilt.

Upgraded gas furnace from early 80's to high-eff model. I had solicited three quotes for the job, but went with Royal Air because the estimator seemed more concerned with balancing the system to the house than the lowest bidder had. On day of install, three employees showed up. They worked extremely hard and had coordinated the plumbing and electrical subs with good precision. Entire install was completed by late afternoon. Part of install was addition of a chimney liner for gas hot water heater. Old system was taken away and no mess was left. Qualification of the system occurred one week later due to scheduling problem at the main office. Otherwise, system would have been tested on day of install. Very happy overall with the new system and the installation process.

I was extremely pleased. They have consistenly stood behind their work despite some problems with the equipment (not their fault). When multiple parts of the furnace failed simultaneously, they were systematic and careful in figuring it out and being sure my warranty with the manufacturer was honored. I'm an Angie's List 'skeptic' because there are so many companies with A ratings obscuring lots of bad experiences, but in this case their rating is well-deserved - they are pros, competitive on price, and a pleasure to deal with.

The intitial installation went very well. I had a problem later and they had to replace a valve. They fixed it at no charge but I had problems with it again but since it wasn't a manufacture's defect they charged for the second repair. I found out it was a problem with rust in the gas line and the gas company actually paid for the repair. They are very responsive to any problems that arise. I will be working with them soon regarding a gasket repair. Arthur, the owner of the company always wants the job done right. He shows up at the jobsite to make sure things are going right and is involved in the process.

I cannot rave enough about Royal Air. This is the second major job they've done for us (previously, two forced-hot-air furnaces and two air conditioning units in an old Victorian house). Arthur Pickett (the younger one, there are two) has given us such amazing service, beginning with a detailed analysis of our home (1899 Victorian with 3 floors). He recommended a particular boiler, introduced us to the concept of indirect-fired hot water heaters (very energy efficient and last longer than normal water heaters), and recommended a single AC unit for two floors when other contractors had insisted we needed two (at twice the price). At each step, he made sure we understood the pros and cons. And he confirmed the placement of every AC vent with us, and the locations of the thermostats. The work was done with great skill and professionalism. The boiler plumbing looks like a work of art -- very clean. The air conditioning ductwork -- full-sized, not the smaller "high velocity" AC -- was run through the walls and ceilings perfectly, taking up less room than I'd expected. When the AC was complete, the blower was noisy. Arthur had warned us about this, saying they'd come back and balance the system. And that's exactly what happened. They completely eliminated the noise. Once the heating season arrived, we experienced some banging from the radiators (not due to the job, but the old pipes in the walls and floors). Arthur made a half-dozen service calls for this, without charging us a penny, trying to fix the noise. He tried the least intrusive solutions first, not wanting to "mess with old, fragile pipe" unless absolutely necessary. In the end, he recommended some thermostat settings that should minimize the noise, and that worked. The house had only one heating zone, and we started feeling the limitations when winter came. Cool on the first floor, hot on the second and third. He recommend splitting into two zones, and his guys came and completed the work in 3 days for an additional $3500. The split worked perfectly, balancing the heat throughout the house. I can't say enough about the friendliness, professionalism, and skill of this company.
Description of Work: Replaced 50-year-old boiler with new efficient boiler for hot water radiators. Moved a heavy radiator to another location. Installed indirect-fired water heater. Installed two-zone central air conditioner in the attic. This is a house we just bought, a Victorian circa 1899.

They had come out to figure out the issue with the air conditioner. Since they couldn’t figure out what the issue was they said they couldn’t do the job. One mechanic said he knew exactly what he had to do but that his boss didn’t want him to do it. It was about 100 degrees outside and I had a two-year-old with me. They were just not willing to do the job. They were terrible and had also charged us a lot for doing nothing. They were the worst people ever. I would never use them again.

I am not certain that he is reviewing the correct company. We did indeed go to his home, but on 7/15/06. This was a weekend call and the technician on duty discovered a short in the electrical wiring of the air conditioning. Due to the nature of the problem, the technician told the customer that he needed to reschedule the repair with a different technician and the office would call Monday to set that up. The technician charged $69.95 for the service call. When the office called on Monday, the client chose not to reschedule and therefore his $69.95 check was returned to him. I think there may be some confusion as to which company did the final repair. We were not involved beyond that, and have no idea which company actually completed the repair and charged $500.00.

Terrible! See the above description of work performed.
Description of Work: When my wife and I moved into our new condo, Royal was the incumbent contractor that installed and maintained our HVAC unit. Our first winter in our home we had miserable problems with our heating unit. They came to our house no less than 3 times that winter and were not able to fix our unit. We just got fed up and used our own tricks to get the unit to work, which included tricking the thermostat, power cycling the HVAC unit, etc. The next winter, the same thing. Royal just kept trying to sell me service contracts, instead of fixing the problem. After conducting my own research I concluded that the problem was with the pressure switch and insisted that Royal come back to replace it - a $28 part. They came, disagreed, thought the exhaust pipes were clogged with a birds nest, told me to clean it, and it should work. Long story short, they never did what I asked them to do and now, in our third winter, the problems persist. That is, until I called another firm, and they not only fixed the problem within 20 minutes, but they verified that it was, indeed, the pressure switch! I'm VERY displeased with Royal and plan on writing them a letter and a letter to the BBB considering how much money I've wasted with them.

We were surprised to see this posting from the member. We did install the system in his home in June of 2004. In March of 2007 we responded to the previous owner, who requested service on this unit. We arrived, diagnosed a bad flame sensor and replaced it. In September, we were called out for another problem (6 months later) and replaced the pressure switch. At that time we offered the homeowner a service plan as the filters needed cleaning and the unit needed routine maintenance. The following April (2008) we were called for a no-heat call. We replaced the thermostat. The next October (2008) we were called again for a no-heat and found a crack in the transition venting. At that time we reviewed the account with the homeowner (not the member), agreed all the problems should have been detected at the first service call, and refunded the homeowner, as we agreed, a portion of the repairs. We have not had many dealings with the member, and are sorry he has such bad feelings about our services. At the time of these repairs, we were in contact with the previous homeowner, and tried to satisfy all his concerns.

The took out an oil based boiler system with old time heaters. They put in the two systems in: one in the basement, one in the attic. They were very responsive to my husband's request for future work he will be doing and trying to make sure that was accommodated in where they placed the ductwork. Actually the floor sanders came during the midst of their install process. They were very good about working schedules around one another making sure everything got done on time. Any questions we had or anything we needed them to look out, they were very good about working out the fine details that come up during the middle of an install. Any thing that we were not happy with they came back and made sure we were satisfied. They were always here on time. They let us know ahead of time if they were not. After the floors were done they made sure to put their booties on when they came in the house.

Getting an estimate and scheduling work went smoothly, the work did not. There was avoidable damage to the house. The crew broke our pull down stairs, cracked a ceiling, cut molding, and backed their truck into our stone pillar. Holes were cut with little regard to placement. Ducts were placed so that we could not access our chase way and it is difficult to get the cover off the air handler. We had to point out each issue and request resolution instead of the crew being up front. After the install, 4 service calls were placed for various issues before the unit functioned. Another call this spring for a blown fuse. Royal Air has responded to call promptly, and we are covered by one year warranty. The service technicians are professional and skilled. Our installation issues were due to an unmonitored installation crew. There was no communication of topics discussed during estimate i.e. air duct and register placement. We fear continued maintenance issues due to poor installation.

Not well. It was hard to get someone to come and it cost $90 just to show up and the total was $123. All he did was bleed air from a line but from the start, he seemed to be angling to get a furnace replacement job. Fix lasted a few days and then the second call to company was supposed to be a first thing int he morning call but if I had not called in the late afternoon, no one would have even showed up. A different tech, this time he expressed anger the previous one had even worked on it and said he wouldn't touch it. By then it was too late in the day for me to start calling other companies so my tenant has another cold night. He also pushed for a replacement job, as if I would award a contract that size on the spot without investigating. Made me feel he thought his firm had me over a barrel and I was fool enough to jump on his offer without getting other estimates. Tough to judge if they were conning me or not. Like asking a car dealer if you should get a new one or fix the old one.
Description of Work: Emergency condition. My tenant was without heat due to breakdown of her oil furnace which is very old but has stood the test of time till now. It probably is the right time to get a new one. This one is a ''Texaco Firechief'' that is probably 50 yrs old. The longer something works , the longer one things it will continue to work. I will probably switch to gas now.

HE CALLED US ON 3/13/07. WE SCHEDULED A SERVICE CALL FOR 10-12 AM. OUR TECHNICIAN ARRIVED AT 10:45AM, WITHIN THE TIME FRAME PROMISED. HE THEN GOT THE SYSTEM WORKING AND ADVISED THE CUSTOMER THAT A REPLACEMENT WAS NEEDED. WE CHARGED $123.95 FOR THE CALL AND LEFT AT 11:25AM. SIX DAYS LATER, AFTER ALREADY BEING ADVISED THAT HIS SYSTEM WAS WELL OVER 40 YEARS OLD AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT, THE SYSTEM FAILED AGAIN. OUR TECHNICIAN ARRIVED AT 3:45PM FOR THE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULED BETWEEN 3-5PM. HE DETERMINED THE SYSTEM WAS NO LONGER SAFE TO OPERATE. HE WAS INFORMED THAT HE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE SYSTEM AND THE UNIT WAS SHUT DOWN. IN ACCORDANCE WITH OUR PROCEDURES, AN ESTIMATE WAS GIVEN TO HIM FOR A NEW SYSTEM. THERE WAS NO CHARGE FOR THE RETURN VISIT. AT NO TIME DID ANYONE WISH FOR HIM TO FEEL PRESSURE. SIX DAYS PRIOR TO THE UNIT DEGRADING TO "REDTAG" STATUS, HE WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE SYSTEM. WE CERTAINLY DID NOT MEAN TO PRESSURE HIM INTO USING OUR COMPANY, ONLY INTO REPLACING A SYSTEM THAT WAS BECOMING DANGEROUS TO OPERATE. WE CANNOT LEAVE A SYSTEM RUNNING THAT COULD MALFUNCTION CAUSING PERSONAL OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. WE CANNOT IN GOOD CONSCIENCE LEAVE A SYSTEM OPERATING IF WE FEEL IT IS UNSAFE TO THE OCCUPANTS. WE FEEL THE CHARGE OF "CONNING" HIM IS COMPLETELY UNFOUNDED AS HE AGREED 6 DAYS EARLIER THAT HIS SYSTEM NEEDED REPLACEMENT. WE ARRIVED WHEN PROMISED AT EACH CALL AND DID OUR BEST WITH AN OUTDATED SYSTEM.

Gas furnace stopped working on a very cold Friday night in late February, not long after we moved into a new house. It appeared to be the gas supply so Keyspan came out three times on Saturday and Sunday and eventually replaced entire meter and regulator outside house, but furnace still didn't work reliably. Very cold weekend inside the house - temps in low 40s. Sunday evening, called Royal (first-time customer), and repairman called back promptly, listened to furnace via telephone, and diagnosed problem immediately as a dirty sensor. John S. came within an hour, cleaned the sensor, and said he'd order another. He was a perfect gentleman, offering to remove his shoes to tiptoe across our freshly-finished wood flooring. A week later, he returned to install the new sensor, and the furnace has worked flawlessly since the initial visit. I was also impressed by his apparent honesty and candor when asked about what was required for routine maintenance (this is my first gas heating system).
Description of Work: Replaced sensor in gas furnace, requiring two visits to house.

They had $67 service call which was much better than $197 that I got from another company. Jose did a great job, showed up on time, and got everything done quickly. We had a slight discrepancy with the cleaning estimate and Jose apologized for it, which impressed me. Overall, I'd recommend them to anyone, especially because they bill by the job, not the hour.
Description of Work: They cleared HVAC line for me.
