The fellow who came over was extremely professional & businesslike. When he departed, I asked if he would be doing the work. He replied no, he was the "project manager." I immediately figured there would be much overhead involved here. A week later, the same guy was no longer with the company; however, the woman in charge of estimates was very responsive & quoted me a price based on what the estimator had observed of my place. We were talking complicated work in the range of $3,000, in their case much higher. Did not hire them.
Description of Work: No services performed. The estimate was incredibly well organized, but took the project as something much bigger than it was & the format did not seem to actually address my own situation (perhaps due to the fact that the guy who visited left the company within a week or so). Everything itemized was an add on OVER $4,425, so I began to feel that I was being skyrocketed to heavy pricing.

They came out the day after I called and showed up at the time they said they would. He took a ladder to get into our attic and examine the attic fan which had stopped working. He discovered that the problem was only a loose bolt which he tightened and showed me how to fix should it get loose again. The whole thing took about 15 minutes and he charged me the lowest fee possible (basically just covering the trip to our place). They also do big jobs (ie, central air) and when we next need an electrician we're going to use them.
Description of Work: They repaired an attic fan which had stopped working.

They were highly rated on the list, and that is why I chose them. They were the only ones that responded to my request, because it was at the height of the season. They told me it would be about 10 days before they could come, but they called later and ended up coming out that day due to a cancellation, which I was very pleased with. They did not have the parts with them, so it took about a week for them to finish the job. The price was a little high, but I would use them again in the future and would recommend them to others.

Keyes technician came to our home last winter to look at our heating system which has never functioned well. He said he had some ideas and would submit an estimate via email. Never heard back, even after several attempts to reconnect on our part. Called back this summer, thinking an early appointment for next winter would make things easier. I spoke to someone who took all the information and promised a call within a few days with an appointment time for a tech visit. Never heard from them again.
Description of Work: Our heating system has never performed well in all the years we've owned the house. We thought perhaps we might need a second thermostat. Called Keyes for advice and estimate on whatever needed to be done.

IT IS VERY DISAPPOINTING FOR US TO SEE AN "F" AS A GRADE FROM AN ANGIE'S LIST MEMBER. WE HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH IN REGARDS TO HER EXPERIENCE AND FOUND OUT WHO IN OUR OFFICE PERFORMED SO POORLY, TWICE. AS IT TURNS OUT THAT EMPLOYEE IS NO LONGER WORKING AT KEYES NORTH ATLANTIC, INC. WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TAKE THOSE EXPECTATIONS VERY SERIOUSLY. WE ARE VERY SORRY THAT SHE WAS CAUGHT IN THAT LOOP OF POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. WE HOPE THAT SHE HAS FOUND SOMEONE TO HELP HER OUT WITH HER HEATING NEEDS.

Keyes came out for routine maintenance of my furnace and that of my downstairs neighbor (identical), at which time they advised that we both replace them. Ultimately, both did die this winter, so that was correct. But they charged us each $100 for essentially just a sales pitch. A couple months later, when I lost heat, they responded to a service call, and charged me $160 to light my pilot. They wouldn't replace my thermocouple; they said the part didn't exist. (Bedford Mechanical found one in stock at the nearest HVAC shop). I asked them to come for an estimate on this new furnace, which they did, but did not supply for several weeks. It was astronomical: $6900 for a 40,000 BTU furnace. And several months later, out of the blue, they sent me an urgent 'overdue' notice for that very first bill, which I had most certainly paid already. They didn't really do anything wrong, but they sure charge a lot of money for mediocrity.

THE BOTTOM LINE REGARDING THE ISSUE WITH THIS MEMBER AND HIS NEIGHBOR BELOW IS A LIFE SAFETY ISSUE. OUR QUOTE INCLUDED CHARGES THAT WERE NEEDED IN ORDER TO BRING THE SYSTEM INTO CODE COMPLIANCE PROTECTING THE OCCUPANTS OF THE HOME. IN REVIEWING OUR NOTES, IT APPEARS THAT ONE OF THE REASONS FOR THE DELAY IN PROVIDING A QUOTE FOR THE REPLACEMENT WAS THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL PIECES OF CORRESPONDENCE GOING BACK AND FORTH REGARDING SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM AND TRYING TO COMMUNICATE THE URGENCY OF SOLVING THE SAFETY ISSUE IN THE HOME. WE TRY TO MEET EVERYONE'S NEEDS IN A TIMELY FASHION BUT UNFORTUNATELY SOMETIMES FALL SHORT. IN REGARDS TO THE PAYMENT ISSUE, WE HAVE NOW FOUND THAT THE MEMBER'S NEIGHBOR HAD MADE THE PAYMENT FOR HIM AND WAS NOT APPLIED TO THE CORRECT ACCOUNT. WE ARE VERY SORRY ABOUT THIS ACCOUNTING ERROR.

Keyes North Atlantic was the company I contacted when I bought my new home in August of 2006. They informed me they could take care of all my heating needs and put me on a maintenance contract. Since using them, my hot water has malfunctioned three separate times and each time they came out they had to rediagnose the problem and replace parts. This last time they came out they also told me the radiant heat to the sun room was not functioning. Despite waiting several months they still have yet to fix the problem. I continue to receive bills for labor as well as parts despite the fact that their technicians have yet to diagnose the problem. The office staff is pleasant and try their best to help address issues. When I contact the company they do their best to get out within 48 hours. However, it is little help to get out to the customer quickly if the problem keeps recurring. I have no choice but to seek assistance elsewhere.
Description of Work: The hot water heater (Bosch) was not switching on and the company came out multiple times explaining a small part was malfunctioning. This part was replaced 3 separate times and on the third time a different technician told me it was a different problem altogether. When all was said and done, I still do not have heat to portions of the house.

OUR OFFICE REMEMBERS THE SITUATION WITH THE MEMBER VERY WELL. WE DID MAKE THREE SEPARATE TRIPS TO THE HOUSE OVER A FIVE MONTH PERIOD. EACH TIME WE FOUND AND REPLACED DIFFERENT FAILED PARTS AND LEFT THE SYSTEM RUNNING WHEN THE SERVICE WAS DONE. OUR TECHNICIANS DID OBSERVE THAT THE SYSTEM IS OLDER AND THAT MUCH OF THE EQUIPMENT IS IN ITS MID TO LIFESPAN. OUR TECHNICIANS VERBALLY ADVISED THE MEMBER OF THEIR CONCERNS REGARDING THE OVERALL CONDITION OF HER SYSTEM, BUT WE FAILED TO FOLLOW UP WITH PROPER DOCUMENTATION OF OUR CONCERNS. THIS SITUATION ENDED IN BOTH CONFUSION AND FRUSTRATION FOR THE CUSTOMER, WHICH WE REGRET. BECAUSE OF OUR DESIRE TO EASE THE MEMBER'S CONCERNS, WE AGREED TO WRITE OFF $445.67 WHICH WAS THE COST OF THE FIRST OF THE THREE SERVICE CALLS.

Keyes came out the day after we called them and spent a number of hours at the house. The before/after difference is noticeable. The heat, particularly in the upstairs of the house, is much faster to come on and the radiators get hotter than they did a few weeks back. We are very happy with the work and appreciated the speedy response. We will definitely be calling Keyes again.
Description of Work: Keyes came out and cleaned our gas boiler which was in sore need of some attention. In addition to replacing a number of worn out parts on the boiler, they also recommended a number of improvements (new valves etc.) throughout the system to make everything run more efficiently.

After my furnace failed, I did a lot of calling HVAC people, to figure out if I should fix it or repair it. Keyes came out at $300-$500 for trying to repair it (on top of the $165 for a useless service call -- and they would make no guarantees about getting it working. Other people would fix it for $200, and if they couldn't make it work, I didn't have to pay them. I got 4 quotes on replacing the furnace. Keyes, despite being the first people I called, were the highest quote. They made very little attempt to help me fix my furnace, but instead pressured me towards spending $7000 with them on a replacement. When I had my furnace inspected, the technician advice me to search for a replacement thermopile on my own. I was unable to find one. When the part actually broke, Keyes was also unable to find a replacement piece. I chose Keyes because of the great reputation it had on Angie's list. I was very very disappointed in the service I received.
Description of Work: Keyes inspected my furnace before the winter, and found that the thermopile was failing. They did not recommend making a repair. A month later, the thermopile failed on a Friday night. They sent a technician out to make the exact same diagnosis as they had given a month ago. He could not fix it, and told me maybe Keyes could fix it on Monday. Keyes called me late on Monday (after a weekend without heat) and told me they could try to replace my thermopile and pilot light (a straightforward easy job,) for $300-$500, but they weren't sure if it would work. Or, they could install a brand new furnace for me for $7000 - more than three times what I eventually paid for a new furnace. I had Keyes inspect my furnace specifically to avoid and be prepared for a failure. Instead, they did nothing to help me and tried to pressure me into overpaying for a furnace when I had no heat in the house.

That the seasonal maintenance done in Oct. 07 did not prevent a part failure in Nov. 07. Seasonal maintenance and cleaning of a heating system is not intended to prevent future parts failures, and that is made clear in all written and verbal documentation. Invoice for emergency service was for $165 although technician quoted $157. Invoice amount was in error. On Dec. 7 KNA agreed to absorb the entire bill at the member's request. KNA quoted $300-$500 for repairs, but would not guarantee the work. KNA declined to guarantee a modification to obsolete equipment. KNA’s quote for replacing the furnace was substantially higher than other contractors’ quotes, and that KNA used the furnace failure to pressure the member into using our services for the replacement. KNA’s quote for the furnace replacement was given one week prior to the furnace failure. The quote included changes needed to the duct system in order to resolve a life-safety issue and to bring the system into code compliance. Other contractors’ quotations may not have included this additional work.

Serviceman was 30 min late. Seemed to be knowledgeable about the units, completed the project in an hour or so. The price of the thermostat was at least twice what it was listed for on the Internet but I suppose that some of that was for installation (total price $304, plus $150 for the preventatative maintenance call = total cost of $454). I knew that the cost of the thermostat was high but since he was there and it would have cost me more to have anyone come back and install one, I had him go ahead with it. Showed me filter changing.

We searched for a long time for a company willing to install an attic (whole-house) fan for us. Keyes was one of the few contractors willing to do it. These guys definitely win the award for most helpful contractors (and we've used a lot)! They returned phone calls, gave a prompt estimate, checked in to see how the carpentry work associated with the project was going, did the work well, and were generally knowledgeable and available through the whole process. Chris was also knowledgeable about the solar panels installed by a previous owner of the home.

The installers were fantastic, they worked diligently and cleaned up after themselves (you wouldn't even have known they were there once the job was finished). My only gripe with the experience was that initially I was told that they would be installing a 90% efficiency boiler and they ended up putting in an 85% boiler. I would have appreciated it if I had been made aware of the boiler change ahead of time instead of discovering it on my own after the first day of the install. I think that this was mainly a case of bad communication and in the end we came to an agreement on an adjusted price which I believe was fair to both parties. I would recommend Keyes and will be using them in the future if need be.
Description of Work: We needed our gas boiler replaced as the original boiler from 60 years ago was on it's last legs. Keyes was the first company to come out and give us an estimate. They were extremely professional and very thorough. When I received the estimate I thought it was quite high until I started getting other estimates. In the end, we went with Keyes. They were by no means the cheapest but they offered a top of the line system at a reasonable price compared to the other estimates we received. They installed a direct vent high efficiency boiler as well as an indirect hot water tank.

Called in because an electrical outlet stopped working and the circuit breaker hadn't popped. I thought it was the wiring gone bad (house is 50 years old) but they suggested I reset all the breakers before having them come out. Turns out some breakers will trip without the little handle in the breaker box switching over. Their honesty saved me a lot of money. They could have come in and charged me 100's of dollars to rewire the outlet to the breaker box.

EXCELLENT - Keyes is a top notch company. Not only do they do great work, they're punctual, trustworthy, and their customer service is one of the best I have ever experienced. I was kept informed of their progress every few hours and soon after we initially lost heat we were up and running again. Thank you Keyes!
Description of Work: We hired Keyes originally to conduct an annual service of our boiler. When the technician serviced it he noticed extremely high levels of carbon monoxide being generated by the boiler. He immediately shut it down and presented us with the option of cleaning it or getting a new boiler. Since our boiler is over 23 years old we choose to replace it. Unfortunately our timing was lousy because the temperatures outside were freezing. But Keyes was incredible, they found a replacement boiler for us in a day and had a crew install it immediately.

Friendly & efficient service. Estimate was accurate. Overall they did a good job. I do have one complaint, though: after the technician came out to diagnose the problem, he said someone would call us with an estimate & let us know how long the part would take to arrive. No one called. I finally called them back a week later for the status, and they claimed they had either talked to my husband or left a message with the information (we received no such message, and he says they never called). I asked them to order the part and they told me they'd call back to schedule service. They never called back, so I had to call again, and again was told they didn't have us in the system. Luckily, they had the part available and were able to come that week. Luckily it hadn't gotten too cold out yet, as we had no heat in the meantime!
