Keyes North Atlantic is unprofessional and undependable. Would never recommend.
Description of Work: Despite making the appointment three weeks in advance and having it reconfirmed two days before the appointment, Keyes North Atlantic did not show and when I called they indicated they would be one hour or more late. They offered a 5% reduction in the service. I told them that they were not worthy of being listed on Angie's List. They failure to appear or call is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE and they should not be covered on Angie's List. DO NOT USE THIS UNRELIABLE COMPANY.

Response from Keyes North Atlantic
We were very disappointed to read the member's comments regarding our company. We are an HVAC company that has been in business for over 50 years. The toughest times of the year are summer and winter when the temperatures outside can cause extreme problems with equipment in households. This summer we have had several days in the 90's and even over 100 degrees. During these times, we find that our service department is stretched to the maximum with our technicians trying to meet the demands of our customers. Our technician on that day was an hour or so late for the member and that is because he was delayed servicing an emergency situation. We felt badly for being later than we planned and offered the member a 5% discount for his inconvenience. Unfortunately, this offer was not acceptable to the member. We wish the best for the member and hope that he finds another company that can meet his needs.

They were definitely confident on what they were doing. They had done some work for me on another property a few months before and they solved the problem that another company could not. It was a simple problem and I got the work done for a small amount of money. They solved it because the guy who came out to do the work knows what he was doing. Their price was reasonable. I had asked for the same guy who worked for me in the past and they sent me the same guy. They give very good service. It is a good company. I would use their service in the future too.

Very well. I think Keyes is pricey, but worth it. I trust their point of view; they are detailed, thorough, responsive to problems, and respectful of my home. I have subsequently moved and need to deal with a heat pump problem in my new home. They are one of three contractors bidding on the job and their process has definitely been the most thorough and responsive.
Description of Work: Keyes removed an old heat pump system that was on top of a 4 story building situated on a Pier in the middle of winter. It wasn't an easy job but they were a delight to work with and have in my home. The process wasn't flawless and it required them to return on multiple occasions to trouble-shoot, which they always did promptly. One failure was on the fourth of July; i called them at 6PM and they returned the call within the hour. In the end, all was good.

We had to beg and plead to get the quote for the repair, which they finally did. When things broke later we learned that they had only put heating units under service, not AC. To their credit, they allowed us to pay for the AC contract and fixed what was broken under contract. When our heat stopped working (under contract) on a weekend they recommended waiting till monday so they would not have to charge for weekend work (not covered by contract? Kind of defeats the purpose). They needed a replacement part and "accidently" tried to charge us for the time the guy spent on another job before coming back. In general our frustrations were less with their work, though they did once leave a tube out of a pump which flooded the floor around it, and more with the disorganization in their office.
Description of Work: When we purchased a new house we contacted Keyes and asked them to fix some outstanding issues, give a quote on fixing some others (specifically moving an intake vent) and putting the houses systems under service contract. The experience described is over the course of a year.

Inexcusably late with no phone call and no explanation. I scheduled an inspection for a faulty furnace for a Wednesday morning. I was told a tech would arrive between 8 and 8:30. At 8:45, I called in and was told the tech was stuck in traffic and would be there shortly. At 9:05, I called back and was told the tech was still in traffic and would be there in another half hour. I informed them that I needed to go to work and wasn't able to wait. At 10:15, a tech called me to let me know he was outside my house, a full two hours late and despite the fact I told their dispatcher I wouldn't wait. Had the weather been bad or had they called and let me know they were way off schedule, I would have been annoyed but understanding. Instead, they waited for me to call them, provided two bogus estimates of when the tech would arrive, and failed to offer any sort of plausible explanation of why they were two hours behind their promised arrival time. Completely unprofessional and inexcusable.

We are sorry to hear that the Member was unhappy with our service. This has been a tough winter for all. The morning of the appointment for the Members, our technician scheduled to do their inspection was called out on an emergency call. This was the day of one of our recent blizzards and our technician had already been called out for an early-morning "no heat call". When Mr. Member called that morning to confirm the appointment he was advised of the situation and was told that the technician would be arriving shortly. As soon as our technician got heat restored in our other customer's home, he proceeded to the Hodge's home. Mr. Member called again to confirm and we advised him that our technician was on his way. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating and the traffic was horrendous. By the time our technician arrived, the Hodges were not at home. We feel badly that we could not arrive on time but sometimes things are out of our control. The Service Manager has called the Members and left a message apologizing for the situation. He also called two other times to try to make amends but the Hodges have not returned our phone call. We wish the Hodges our best and hope that they were able to contact another company to provide service to them.

Our furnace quit four days before Christmas and we had no heat. We were not comfortable just hiring the first person to provide an estimate, so we interviewed several companies and got several estimates. Keyes was not the cheapest, but they were in the ballpark and the representative (Brian) was very responsive to our questions and concerns and came back with all the right answers, more so than others. Also, Keyes installs Lennox products which we wanted. There was some gap between what we had discussed with Brian and what the two installers actually wanted to do. Luckily, we were off work at the time and could supervise the project. Whenever there was something that wasn't what we had discussed, we called and Brian contacted the installers to have them do it the way that had been discussed. The installers were very amenable and professional, easy to talk to, there just hadn't necessarily been the best communication between them and the sales rep prior to their working on the job. I would suggest that homeowners review the work carefully to make sure that the installers have done what was asked. Keyes was able to get us heat the night of the first day they started work, which was a blessing. The heat had to be off the next day while they worked, but it was officially on by that second night. They installed the AC but could not test it because it is too cold out, so we don't know how that part of the installation went yet.

I have used this company for servicing our heating and air conditioning systems for almost 20 years. Even though I do not have a maintenance contract, they usually respond very quickly. This most recent service call was typical. Saturday morning I woke up to discover that the gas furnace was not working. I observed that the pilot light was out. I was unable to relight it. Since I have experienced this problem before, I was pretty sure I needed a new thermocouple. I called for service around 9 AM on Saturday, and I got a call back within 10 minutes telling me a service person would be calling me to set up a time for the same day. The service person called twice. Once to set up the time, and again to let me know they would be arriving within 10 minutes. He arrived as promised, and determined that the thermocouple was bad, replacing it in about 10 minutes. There was a premium labor charge because it was the weekend. Nobody mentioned this on the phone, but I understand its justification.

Our A/C unit was not working well. The unit would run and run, but the compressor wouldn't turn on and it was just circulating hot air. I first called South Shore A/C. They came and recommended a booster for the A/C, but they didn't have one with them and couldn't perform the service. The next day my wife and I had to rush to the hospital, where we stayed for several days. South Shore never called back or returned to service the unit (which is too bad, as the were good). I then called Keyes North Atlantic, as they had received good reviews on the list. They came quickly and installed the booster, but as soon as I set up the appointment, South Shore A/C called back -- as if they were informed by Keyes or as if Keyes sub-contracted to South Shore A/C. Anyway, Keyes came and installed the booster and everything is working. However, when I asked about installing a new thermostat they wanted $400 for installing a Honeywell unit that costs $100 retail. That was the only concern I have with Keyes, the price of the thermostat. I would recommend them, however.

I was impressed very much with the serviceman (Gerard). He arrived in the timeframe promised and was very friendly the whole time. I asked if I could watch what he was doing just for personal interest and he didn't mind at all and even explained many things as he worked. He noticed that our humidifier on our furnace was leaking and rigged it so it would no longer. Overall, I feel very good about my service and would definitely use the company again.

Called Keyes on Sunday and after describing the problem, the technician suggested postponing the visit until Monday because he'd be unable to order the part on Sunday and the hourly cost of the visit was lower on weekdays. He showed up on time, took the information and ordered the parts. A tentative time was set for installation the following day but Keyes did not notify me that there would be a delay because they were unable to get all the parts by that time. I found out because I called to confirm the appointment. They agreed that they should have notified me. Keyes had the supplier overnight the missing parts and installed everything very quickly on Thursday. Keyes also agreed to send a formal letter that I will submit to FEMA indicating that the motor failure was caused by flooding. If the parts had been available as expected it would have been better, obviously, but given the situation, they were very nice over the phone and went out of their way to accommodate me. They even kept the labor charges to the bare minimum.

We were given a two-hour window during which to expect a technician, and he arrived during the window. We were able to schedule the appointment for within 24-hours of when we called Keyes. The technician was friendly and professional and answered my questions, even bringing me down to the basement furnace to show me the location of an air filter we hadn't known existed (we typically change our filters every 6 months but this one clearly hadn't been changed in years, since the last professional service). We were pleased and would use them again.

The folks at Keyes were great. When I called and explained that my window unit was not working (and that I suspected it was the power cord), they offered to come by and take a look at it. They warned me, however, that it might be cost-prohibitive to fix and that it might be in my best interest to just buy another A/C. I appreciated this advice because it showed me that they were not just out to make a buck. I decided to have them take a look at it anyway because it is a nice A/C and I didn't want to just toss it. A repair person came the day after I called. He showed up on time, determined that he could fix it by replacing the plug with one he had on his truck, and did so. The A/C is working fine now.

From the beginning of the project, we worked with Keyes' engineer George Page. He listened to our description of problems, and created a comprehensive solution for each of them. He suggested alternatives for the pieces of hardware, and worked with sub-contractors for the new heating zone. He even worked out a solution to the problem of having the hot-water system out of service by scheduling the installation during a 3-day period when we were traveling. I don't think I've ever worked with such adaptable and creative people in any type of business, especially contracting.
Description of Work: I used Angie's List to identify highly-rated heating contractors in the Boston area. Three contractors actually came and provided estimates, along with descriptions of how each would handle the problems of 1) an older inefficient hot-water boiler, 2) inadequate hot-water supply, and 3) the creation of a new zone within our 70 year old Chestnut Hill home. Ultimately, we decided to go with Keyes because their price was good, and I felt a great deal of confidence in their ability to find creative solutions to problems. Ultimately, they removed an old gas-fired boiler, an old gas-fired water heater and replaced them with a Buderus wall-hung boiler, and a Super-Stor hot water system. While they were doing this, they created a new heating zone in the house with its own thermostat. No changes (other than the thermostat) had to be accomplished above the basement level,

Keyes was very professional, skilled, and competitive, especially Jason Merino and his brother. Before Jason managed the project, we had another person (let's just call him Bob) evaluate our unit and give us a quote. The quote was about a thousand lower than another quote we received from Home Depot and much lower than a quote from Pann. Bob said he found a unit that would fit but it would take 6 weeks for special order. We were okay with that. After 6 weeks, I tried to follow up with Bob but he had left the company. Jason was quick to respond to my message and took ownership of our case. Jason came to our unit and found that Bob had made a mistake and ordered the wrong unit. So we had to wait another 6 weeks. Of course, my wife and I were very unhappy because the winter was passing us by and we were freezing. But we still give them an A because we believe they handled the situation to the best of their ability and it is far better than any other company we may have chosen. Jason was very apologetic for the delay and constantly kept us updated on the status of the order. He and his team also discovered that due to the odd setup of our HVAC closet, we would need custom ductwork among other things to maximize the efficiency of the new HVAC unit. Even though this would cost an extra $1500, he offered to absorb the cost because it was due to an error that Bob had made at the beginning. In the end, Jason's team had transformed our HVAC setup from a shoddy setup with bricks to a clean, powerful, and quiet system that has custom support structures. The workmanship is really amazing. We don't think we would have gotten anywhere near this quality of service for a reasonable price with any other company.

The heat wasn't working and I called Keyes, based on the positive feedback I'd seen on Angie's List. The dispatcher said that they could have someone over the same afternoon, and then called back to say that one of the technicians had just finished a job in the neighborhood and could come right away. He replaced the thermocouple and then took the time to bleed the air out of the radiators (something that KeySpan hadn't done when on a service call a few years earlier). He did the most thorough job, including explanations, of anyone I've ever had to fix the heating. And the cost was lower than what KeySpan had quoted me.

I was disappointed that we paid $385 and it took two days to learn that the system was not repairable. While I believe that their estimate to replace the system was within the acceptable range, we ended up with a heating system that we are pleased with that was installed on deadline and for over $2000 dollars less than their estimate.
Description of Work: The office staff was great and responsive. We had no heat and the company came late in the afternoon to repair the system. The plumber said that he needed a part and would order it. The next day they were able to get the part and came again in the late afternoon to install it. This time a different plumber came and reported that the system was not fixable and we would have to install a new boiler. Their estimate for a new heating system was several thousand dollars more than we ended up paying for the exact same work.

THIS CUSTOMER PLACED A "NO HEAT" CALL TO OUR COMPANY ON NOVEMBER 17,2008 WHICH OUR SERVICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO. AT THE INITIAL CALL, THE TECHNICIAN NOTED THE UNIT WAS IN A FAILED STATE AND IN POOR CONDITION. THE CUSTOMER REQUESTED THAT WE TRY TO REPAIR THE UNIT. THE FOLLOWING DAY, KNA TRIED TO DO AN EFFECTIVE REPAIR. DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION OF THE ORIGINAL PARTS, THE SECOND TECHNICIAN DETERMINED THAT AN EFFECTIVE REPAIR WAS NOT POSSIBLE; REMOVING THE ORIGINAL COMPONENTS COULD NOT BE ACCOMPLISHED. THE CUSTOMER WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY AND WAS OFFERED A PARTIAL COMPENSATION OF THE COST SHOULD THEY DECIDE TO CHOOSE KNA TO REPLACE THE BOILER. IT IS OUR POLICY TO CHARGE OUR CLIENTS FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIRS THAT ARE OFFERED TO PROVIDE A TEMPORARY SOLUTION TO A LONG TERM PLAN OF REPLACEMENT.

A rep from Keyes North Atlantic was scheduled to come by our house as the first step in providing an estimate. The rep arrived on time on the day of the appointment, though it took well over a month to get the appointment. (We called early June, they came mid July.)Although courteous and professional, he took only about 15 minutes to look at the home before saying that he'd want the plans to prepare a quote, and then left. All other A/C contractors we interviewed, including the one we eventually selected, spent at least an hour with us on the initial visit, to learn exactly what we wanted and to take a good look at the challenges the home presented (in terms of installing an A/C system in a home not designed for it). For this reason, we did not feel this vendor had a serious interest in providing a solution for us, and we therefore felt that any estimate they provided would not be realistic. So, we did not pursue the "next step" of sending them floor plans for the home.
