Mike was quick to return my call and gave me a quote over the phone. We set a start date, Mike showed up on time and got straight to work. I asked him to apply a stain, after one application I decided that I would like it a bit darker. Mike got to work on the 2nd application no questions asked, there was understandably an additional charge for the additional labor. After the 2nd application of stain they came back over the next few days and put down the Polly. The results are amazing. Bottom line: Mike has very reasonable rates and does an excellent job.

Mike called me back immediately after I left a message for an estimate. It was a standard sized room for them and he was able to quote me without seeing it. His price was the best that I found and he was the most responsive. We were able to schedule the job within a week and that matched my schedule. Mike and his crew member arrived on time and performed the bulky work (remove carpet and sand) the first day. The best part was that we had heard horror stories of the dust caused by sanding and had taped up all our rooms on that floor to avoid it. Amazingly, there was a very minimum of dust, not enough to even complain about, and we were able to feel a little silly about all the precautions that we took! Mike and crew did a great job refinishing the floors, he came back two more days to add two more coats. They were quiet and respectful of the house and were in and out in a few minutes each day. Mike was kind enough to leave windows slightly open to let the smell out as much as possible each day. The varnish did stink, but it can't be helped. The floor glows now and we're very happy with it.

After searching on Angie's list for a contractor to replace approximately 300SF of rug covering my Cambridge apartment with hardwood flooring, I found Universal Hardwood Flooring after reading the many good reviews. I called the Company and spoke with Mike Tran, proprietor and in short order Mike was over my apartment to provide a quote and help select flooring. Mike was very punctual, courteous and professional in providing the quote and explaining the process to me. I accepted the quote and we set up a time to do the job. On the day job took place, Mike arrived on time and with a co-worker who was also extremely courteous and professional. I left my apartment in their hands and went to work. I arrived home at the end of the day and was abolutely amazed at how they transformed my apartment. The floor looked gorgeous! Mike and his colleague did an absolutely meticulous job! They paid attention to every nook and cranny of the space and cut the wood to extremely precise measures and cleaned up meticulously as well. Mike and his company are craftsmen as well as gentlemen. It went better than I imagined. I recently had my living room repainted and new lighting installed and when that job was finished I realized I couldn't keep the dated wall to wall carpet that had been in the house for years. I called Mike on a Saturday morning, he called back within 10 minutes and come over that afternoon to give me an estimate and began the work the following Tuesday, when he removed the wall to wall carpet. He started the sanding the next day. When he gave me the estimate he said it would take three days to do the job and another two to allow the finish to dry completely before I could move the furniture back. He explained the difference between the water based and oil based polyurethane finishes and that I would need to have thresholds installed at some doorways. After the old wall to wall was removed he showed me scratches the original carpet installers had left in the hardwood. He said he would try to get them out, but they were very deep and would most likely show up as "shadow lines" when he was done. They are minor and I can live with them. He did the job right on time and at the price he gave me. He always returned calls promptly. He was very honest and upfront with me throughout. The job went exactly as he said it would. The floors look fantastic, I'm very happy with the job he did! Now I want to have my three bedroom floors done.

I had a wonderful experience with Mike and his team. He was extremely responsive and constantly kept me updated on our kitchen floor renovation. He removed several layers of pre-exisiting floor and even repaired some heavy damage to the original subfloor. He brought in hardwoods to match the original floors in our house and they look fantastic. Mike truly went above and beyond when he noticed that the water line to our refrigerator consisted of old copper piping. He went out to the hardware store and replaced our water line with tubing so we would not have to worry about it leaking onto our brand new floors in the future. He declined to take ay money for the tubing or his extra time. It is clear that Universal Hardwood Flooring takes great pride in their work and will go above and beyond to make their customers happy. It is so refreshing to finally deal with a contractor who truly cares.

He provides a superior service. He is a good communicator. He advised me on the flooring that would look best in my house. I have a fireplace that has rough and uneven edges. He did a wonderful job fitting the wood close to the fireplace. He is reasonable and timely and does exactly what he says he is going to do. THere was also some damage done to floors when the movers moved my furniture. He also was very helpful providing the paperwork for me to get reimbursed for the damage that was done.

I have owned my condo for three years and have done a few small projects while maintaining a mental list of all the larger ones I wanted to do. For whatever reason this was the year of researching and doing those larger projects (most likely because my schedule is a bit more flexible right now). I decided that doing my floors would be the first large condo project I would look into. I called a handful of different companies looking for estimates. However, from the start I was the most impressed by Mike at Universal Hardwood Floors. I spoke to one company that told me they couldn't do it because I live on a fourth floor walkup and I left voicemails for everyone else. Mike called back in 15 minutes and said he would be happy to come over and give a free estimate, and that he could even come over right then, or any other time that was convenient for me. We scheduled a time the following day and I have never ever had anyone be so prompt. My buzzer rang the minute the clock struck ten. I was new to the process asked a few questions and he answered them intelligently without making me feel like I was some kind of idiot. He was also incredibly friendly while . I was waiting on a few other estimates and let him know that I would call when I figured everything out. His price was far below my other estimates and so I hired him for the job via voicemail. He again called back the same day and offered me times within that same week or the next week. I expected him to say we can't do it until... On the day the job was to begin I had moved all the furniture I could and Mike was a bit late (hence the B). I called him and told him that I had to get going soon and he said he was around the corner which he was. When he came in he apologized for being late and I apologized for not being able to move some of my large furniture. He told me not to worry and that he would handle it. When I came back and saw my floors I must have looked like a kid in a candy store. They looked brand new (in reality its 1950s wood that was never touched up), so much so that when I showed a friend, who is an interior design project manager, she thought I had entirely new wood floor installed. The issue was I moved back in on a Sunday so Mike still had my keys and I couldn't really move the big furniture back on my own. When I called him about the keys he was so accommodating and said he could come right over since he was finishing up a job close by. When he arrived he asked me (without my having mentioned anything) if I needed help moving my furniture back. I was so appreciative and he and the man he worked with moved it all into place exactly where I wanted (and with a smile). I decided right then to get an estimate for the two bedrooms and once my friend moves out I intend to have those floors done by Mike as well.

I had been given a few names of floor refinishers from neighbors but almost all either were not immediately available or had a high asking price for a single room. My thought was to try someone out first and then decide whether I would refinish other rooms in my house. Michael was very articulate and patient on the phone, willing to answer all my questions. He then quoted a very fair price that was less than most others for the one room -- and he said he could be available as soon as I needed him, which was 2 days later. Michael and one of his crew sanded, filled holes from the carpet staples and put down 3 coats of oil based polyurethane over the course of 3 days: first day, initial sanding and one coat of poly sealant; 2nd day, more sanding and filling in holes plus 2nd coat of poly; 3rd day (a Saturday), final sanding and 3rd coat of poly -- with instructions not to enter the room for 2 days. He warned me that the smell is noticeable but with the bedroom door closed, there was no problem staying in the house. The floor looks fabulous. Because of his attention to detail, quality work , and professionalism, I will hire Michael again and have already gotten quotes for future work in my home. I highly recommend Michael and his company.

Mike and his crew provided high quality services at a reasonable price, and were exceptionally professional to work with throughout the process. Mike made several helpful suggestions on the best approach for the job, and was very pleasant to work with. Would certainly use him again for any future flooring needs, and highly recommend him.

Mike Tran came to give me a quote on repairing the kitchen floor and recommended taking it all up and installing new wood, because he could not replace the warped boards that run under the cabinets. I didn't want to incur that much expense and disruption, since the warping was only severe in a small part of the room, and I didn't want to risk damage to the cherry cabinets and baseboards. I decided I could live with the few warped boards and asked him to fix the gaps. He was very reluctant to attempt the gaps because he couldn't guarantee good results. I persuaded him to give it a try, and he found he could slide the boards, so he promised to return the next day and finish the job. The next day, he tightened all the boards and secured the new edge behind the kickspace trim. In the spot where the new, larger gap was visible, he cut a strip from a spare board and glued it in. The patch is visible if you're looking for it, but not obvious. I think Mike did a very skillful job of improving the overall looks of the floor without damaging anything, and without great expense. I downgraged him a little on the price because I felt $300 for less than 3 hours work was a bit aggressive. I'd hire him again, but discuss an hourly rate or quote before the work, to avoid surprises.

He gave me a very reasonable estimate and we set up a time a week later. Mike and his crew arrived exactly on time and started immediately. They had 4 rooms stripped and sealed in less than 5 hours. I was very impressed with their efficiency and professionalism. I would use them again in a heartbeat!

I asked how soon they could refinish the floor and they told me they could come the next day. They told us at the outset that unless we refinished the hallway as well there would be a delineation between the room and the hall. We were fine with that. They came on the day they said they would, and got the floor done quickly and efficiently (over 3 days). It looked great when it was done. The time of day they came was always a mystery but that may have been because they squeezed us in between other jobs. It didn't matter to me; I just left them a key under the matt and they came and went when they needed to. The house was vacant at the time. Once they left the key inside, but they were happy to drive to where I was living at the time to pick-up a new key. Crew was always friendly and polite. I would definitely recommend them.

The floor wood installation was good. The color matching to the existing floor wasn't great, I needed to have them re-do a portion of the job, but they were willing. They are not dustless, but they cleaned up pretty well.Their pricing was good and overall I was satisfied with the job. The did some nice work on details around a curving staircase.The only thing to watch is the color matching if they do staining work.

We were looking for a reliable contractor to put in hardwood on the second floor of our new home. Mike Tran arrived on time at our first appointment, took measurements, described choices for wood selection, described the refinishing process (new to us), explained how he could remove the persistent squeaks in certain sections of the floor, and also pointed out the wear on our first floor (already hardwood) without any aggressive salesmanship. He left us with a written itemized estimate and a number to call. Soon after we contacted him to refinish the first floor and install on the second. The entire venture took a couple weeks, including waiting for the hardwood order. Mike finished exactly when he said he would, the floors look great and the squeaks of the past are gone. Email and phone contact during that time were reasonable considering he is up at 5AM and out with his crew on the job during the day. It is very satisfying to find competent professionals, work together to define a job and a price and then get exactly what you planned to pay for. I would certainly recommend Universal for any work on hardwood floors.

Very responsive and professional. Returned all calls in a timely manner. References were excellent. They were fast and completed the job exactly as they said they would. Informed us clearly of everything that was needed e.g. buying the wood a week before the job. Floors turned out great. They were creative in handling the difference in floor heights between the rooms. Paid attention to details. I didn't need to ask or remind them of anything. They were already on top of it and it was done by the time I inquired. I would highly recommend. They were a little higher on the estimates, but it's worth paying a little more if you know the job is going to get done and be done well! I will definitely hire again to redo our other floors when budgets allow.

These guys were extremely good. Terrific price, very professional, and careful. The floors are more beautiful than I thought possible. They also buffed and fixed oak floors that were scratched up during a construction project. These floors look like new floors. I won't use anyone else - these guys are the best.

The company did what they promised and at the price that was quoted in a timely fashion. The representative had come to assess the job several days earlier. He was polite and responsible. sppearing He explained to me the difference in what was involved in the water based vs oil based based polyurethane and I chose the former. I found after the job was done that I would have preferred the look of the latter The original coating had be oil based.. I can't fault the company for that choice. My only complaint was that I realized after the sanding had been started that I wanted the floor under the refridg.tto be sanded and refinished and the co. refused stating that moving it would scratch the floor that had been sanded. However, I hadn't requested this when the price was negotiated and prior to the work startting Over-all, I believe that the company is competent and reliable. They show up, do the job efficiently and as promised and are competent.
